RHP, 6-1, 185, Villa Vasquez, D.R. With a series win in hand, the Volcanoes look to improve on their 3-0 second-half record in the fourth game of the series. Two Northwest League All-Star pitchers will go at it from Volcanoes Stadium. Tonight The Volcanoes continue an eight-game home stand with the hosting of Spokane in the fourth game of the five-game series. Salem-Keizer looks to improve on its 3-0 second-half record which has them in sole possession of first in the Northwest League South Division. The Volcanoes are currently the only club in the league with three wins. Last Time Out: McCall grand slam headlines S-K s eight-run third After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, Salem-Keizer responded with its biggest run outburst of the 2014 season. The Volcanoes scored eight two-out runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead after three innings. The frame was headlined by a grand slam off the bat of Shilo McCall, recording his second home run in as many nights. Leenhouts limited Spokane to just two runs on six hits while striking out six and walking none. Shilo McCall s Grand Slam: Where it Stands in 2014 Shilo McCall hit a third-inning grand slam in last night s contest. It was the first grand slam for a Volcano since Tyler Hollick hit one on September 1, 2013 against Eugene. It was just the third grand slam hit in the Northwest League this year, following behind Trae Santos of Eugene on June 20 and Nate Tenbrink of Everett on July 22. It was McCall s first grand slam of his three-year professional career. Swing and a miss: Volcanoes pace league in strike outs Salem-Keizer has been leading the Northwest League in strike outs for the majority of the 2014 season. The Volcanoes have struck out 381 opposing batters (9.3 strike outs per game) over the course of the year. Headlined by a 22 strike out night on 6/27, S-K has recorded 40 more strike outs than the nearest team (Eugene with 341). Leenhout s 6 strike outs last night puts him in the team lead in the category with 46, second in the NWL. Lava Bursts: Noteworthy Facts - First-inning defense: After being outscored in first innings at one point in the year, the Volcanoes have narrowed the margin to Won t be shut out Salem-Keizer is the only team in the Northwest League who has yet to be shutout. Currently, the Volcanoes have gone the fourth-longest in to the season without being shutout in franchise history. The 2008 and 2009 clubs went the entire year without being held scoreless, while the Volcanoes lasted until Aug. 16 in Three comfortable wins for Salem-Keizer The theme of 2014 has certainly been close games, as the Volcanoes have competed in 26 games decided by two runs or less. However, Salem-Keizer has now notched three straight wins by three or more runs for the first time this season. The last time the Volcanoes won three or more consecutive games by at least three runs was 8/30 to 9/1 last year, where they beat Boise 10-6 and Eugene 7-1 and Christian Arroyo from the batter s box Arroyo is batting.519 (14-for-27) in his last seven games including three three-hit performances, tops in the NWL since July 17. The next-highest batting average in this span is just.440. His season batting average has topped out at.319 during the seven-game span. The League s top defense The Volcanoes boast a.974 fielding percentage which has vaulted them to first place in the NWL. Salem-Keizer has committed just seven errors in the last 14 games, including a span of five straight error-free games over their most recent road trip. Eight runs in an inning: a season high The Volcanoes struck for eight runs in the third inning of Thursday s game, marking the first time since September 1, 2013 that it was accomplished. The previous season-high for runs in an inning was set just two days ago in the series opener where seven runs were scored. Salem-Keizer s franchise record was set on 7/24/2002, where the Volcanoes scored 11 runs in the eighth inning nd Half, Overall Head Coach: Gary Davenport (2nd Year) Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants LAST TIME OUT 19 R H E SPO SKZ /24 - W- Leenhouts (2-3) L - Gardewine (5-2) S - none VOLCANOES AT-A-GLANCE Overall Record > Home Road First Half > Second Half Current Placing...1st > vs. LHSP vs. RHSP Current Streak...Won 3 Longest Win Streak...3 Longest Losing Streak...4 Consecutive Games Over /1 Consecutive Games Under /0 Overall Series Home Series Away Series Extra Inning Games Shutouts Day Night Last 5 Games Last 10 Games vs. South vs. North Series Opener Series Finale June July August September Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
