SOUTHERN UTAH HOSTING HOME OPENER THIS WEEKEND CEDAR CITY, Utah - Feb Southern Utah will look to shake off a slow start to the 2010 season when the Thunderbirds host the Utah Valley Wolverines this weekend. Although the games are the home opener for the T-Birds the games will likely be played in St. George this weekend with the venues of Pine View High School and Dixie State College tentatively scheduled. In-state games are very important for our program, head coach Dave Eldredge said of the games. We feel bad that the weather may keep us out of Cedar because we really enjoy playing at home and giving fans a better chance to see the team. Players to watch going into the four-game set will be a quartet of SUU hitters batting better than.300 from the plate. Leading the way is Brock Westphal with a.600 average in fi ve at bats this year in three games. Following him is D.J. Andrade with a.400 average in fi ve at bats as well. Four-game starters Bucky Aona and Marcus Romero are among the leaders on the team in at bats and have averaged.385 and.313 from the plate, respectively. Southern Utah will look to get the pitching staff back on track after a rocky start as the staff has tallied a ERA while allowing the opposition to hit.411. James Crockett leads the team with six strikeouts this season in four innings. First pitch for game one of the series on Thursday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the game likely being played at Pine View High School. A venue is anticipated to be fi nalized on Thursday morning. SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY Utah Valley will enter the four-game series this weekend with a record of 0-3 after being swept at Arizona last weekend. The Wolverines lost a narrow 8-7 decision in ten innings in the fi nal game of the series. UVU has a trio of batters that are averaging over.300 with Chris Benson leading the way with a.538 average in a team-high 13 at bats. He is followed by Sage Thorpe with a.500 average and Goose Kallunki with a.364 average. As a team, Utah Valley has averaged.238 from the plate with three doubles and one home run. Opponents have average.358 with four doubles and four home runs. Utah Valley pitching carries an ERA of while recording 11 strikeouts. Ryan Chadwick and Blake Krahenbuhl are tied for the team lead in innings pitched with 4.1 this season in a single appearance for each. Picked Fourth Southern Utah baseball was picked fourth in the preseason coaches poll. Kings of the Mound SUU has its most experience pitching staff in recent years as the T-Bird roster includes four seniors on the mound, including a trio of starters. The unit as a whole combined to pitch 80 percent of the innings during the 2009 season. Offensive Exodus Although pitching is deep, Southern Utah experienced an offensive exodus as 62 percent of the runs scored in 2009 came from players that did not return for the 2010 season.

5 Head coach David Eldredge will begin his sixth season at the helm of the Southern Utah University baseball team. Eldredge began his tenure with the best start among SUU baseball coaches with records over the fi rst two years and led the Thunderbirds to a school-record 31 wins in Eldredge s success has also included the best conference winning percentage for the Thunderbirds since joining the Summit League after a 16-7 (.696) record during the 2009 campaign. DAVID ELDREDGE Head Coach Sixth Season Brigham Young, 1984 Southern Utah s baseball record books have also been rewritten under Eldredge s tenure as new school records have been set in at bats, hits, stolen bases, fi elding percentage, double plays, shutouts, saves, innings pitched and strikeouts. Individual records have also fallen as Eldredge s recruits have set new career standards in games played, at bats, runs, hits, RBI, home runs, total bases, games pitched and saves. The records have led to several conference and national awards as Thunderbirds have garnered eight fi rst-team allconference selections and 16 second-team all-conference accolades. Bucky Aona and Bo Cuthbertson raised national eyebrows as freshmen as each earned PING!Baseball all-freshman team honors with the later also earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American accolades. Eldredge has 19 years of collegiate coaching experience behind him, most recently in a four-year stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Brigham Young. At BYU, Eldredge helped lead the Cougars to a Mountain West regular season title in 2001, MWC tournament championships in 2001 and 2002 and two berths into the NCAA regionals. Eldredge also held a similar post at Loyola Marymount from , where he was instrumental in bringing in the nation s 16th-best recruiting class as rated by Collegiate Baseball. He was on the bench as the Lions won the West Coast Conference title and earned an NCAA tournament berth in Eldredge began his collegiate coaching career at Hawaii Pacifi c in Honolulu from , where he was a fi ve-time District 29 Coach of the Year honoree in guiding the Sea Warriors to fi ve district championships and fi ve regional berths, while his 1991 club fi nished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Eldredge played collegiately at BYU from , where he was an all-western Athletic Conference selection and was voted team captain of the Cougars top-ranked club in Following his playing career at BYU, he began his coaching career as an assistant at Honolulu s Punahou High School where he coached from and again in While at Punahou, Eldredge served as pitching coach and helped lead the program to three league championships, four state tournament appearances and one state title. Overall, Eldredge has coached fi ve players selected in the top-fi ve rounds of the Major League amateur draft and he was the college coach of former New York Met outfi elder Benny Agbayani. He has also been active in numerous youth baseball programs and has won many national titles at the Babe Ruth and AAU levels. Eldredge was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1979 and was a prep all-american at Punahou High. He was born January 6, 1961 and is married to the former Valerie Albert-Thenet, a former Mrs. Hawaii, Mrs. America runner-up and Mrs. World third runner-up. The couple are the parents of fi ve sons, Kaiana, Kiakahi, Kanai, Koa and Kui.
