1 SEPTEMBER 2015 President s Message Ron Nichols The annual meeting will be held on September 19th. Please make every effort to attend. This meeting will include the election of new board members and the farewell from the board to Nancy Stinger, Blair Hubbard and Doug Roderick. These three board members have served their community for two years and dedicated their time and effort to making Tidewater one of the premier properties on the Grand Strand. I look forward to seeing everyone there. Owners, please remember to pick up after your pets! If you rent your unit, please advise your tenants that they must pick up after their pets. Remember that short term renters (6 months or less) are not allowed to bring pets. Also, please be mindful of the working hours in Tidewater for any vendor or contractor. They are permitted to work from 7 AM 7 PM, Monday Friday. Over the past month, Ground Effects has installed pine straw around all buildings and common areas and mulch in the landscape beds at the main entrance. They have trimmed all shrubs around the buildings and common areas, trimmed the natural area around the pool and pond, and applied insecticide/fungicide to all shrubs throughout the property. In the next month they plan to trim the shrubs again, fertilize all turf, apply herbicide on all turf for weed control, apply insecticide/fungicide to all shrubs, and aerate all turf areas. The next termite bait station inspection will be done October 2, 2015 and the next pest control treatment will be done November 6, The buildings are being power washed and the roofs are being cleaned. Both of these projects should be completed in the near future. Please let me know of any questions or concerns you may have. We are always open to suggestions! Should you have any personal items in these areas, we respectfully request that you remove them immediately. We appreciate and thank you for your assistance in these matters. Design Review Board Dave Chambers, Chairperson Ask Before You Act! Nancy Hudson has updated the website with a new DRB fee schedule. We have had a few questions about fees for different projects, and this new schedule format should help the homeowners greatly. Thanks, Nancy! We have received quite a few requests to repaint homes. Remember that the DRB has all the original paint colors for your home. If you need assistance please feel free to let us know so we can assist you. We have all the Sherwin-Williams paint colors in the office if you are thinking of changing the color of your home. This will need DRB approval, and we can assist you in selecting colors from the approved list. We are very appreciative of all the homeowners who have been notifying us of their completed approved projects. This is very helpful in keeping our records up to date. With so many major and minor modifications taking place throughout Tidewater, this communication is very important to our record keeping. Chelsa Fenner, our Assistant Community Manager, has been conducting inspections for us. Mel Renkey, our Property Manager, has been sending out notices of violations. Sometimes owners become upset or confused when a violation notice is received. We are concerned about the level of intense response that Chelsa is getting from a small percentage of homeowners. If you receive a violations notice, please realize that it is not personal; we all live in this Community which has certain rules and regulations that we have agreed to live by. When you get a notice, remember that we all are neighbors, and please respond in a polite and dignified manner. We are sure you will be treated the same way! Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Natural Resources Committee Ann Lippincott, Chairperson Opt-out of Contracted Landscaping Services Policy: At a meeting held on July 16, 2015, the TPCA BOD approved a recommendation from the NRC for revision of the Opt-out of Contracted Landscaping Services Policy. Effective September 1, 2015, there will be a two-tiered program for opting out of contracted landscaping services for the right-of-way (frontage) area between an owner s individual lot line and the curbing: Tier 1 - mowing only, or Tier 2 - all contracted landscaping services (mowing, edging, fertilization, and weed/pest control). Previously, owners have been permitted to opt out of only contracted mowing services. The specific requirements of the new opt-out program will be announced via an blast from Management. Right-of-Way Re-Sodding: Owners are urged to make the necessary preparations when re-sodding their right-of-way areas. 2 Report suspicious activity or persons to NMB AND

3 Removal of any existing root mass from trees and/or shrubbery, tree canopy trimming, and soil amendment are very important to the sustainability of the new sod. It is also recommended that owners who utilize a contracted landscaper to do the re-sodding provide that contractor with a copy of the Right-of-Way Policy, which contains helpful guidelines for optimal re-sodding results. Expending the effort and initial expense to properly prepare the right-of-way area for the new sod will serve to avoid frequent re-sodding and recurrent expense. Please remember that only two types of grass are approved for planting in Tidewater, including the right-of-way areas - St. Augustine and Zoysia. Right-of-Way Plantings: Owners are respectfully reminded that, other than plants included in the originally approved landscape plan for each house, only sod or Asiatic Jasmine are allowed to be planted in the right-of-way areas (area between individual lot lines and the curbing 12.5 ft. on the Plantation side and 10 ft. in the Bluffs). These areas are common to the TPCA and are not part of our individually owned properties. Owners are urged to bring their right-of-way areas into compliance with the restrictive covenant (CCR 10.11) which requires a development-consistent appearance for the right-of-way areas, as well as the TPCA Right-of-Way Policy which designates approved plantings for these areas. NRC Goals: The committee s goals are to improve and maintain the curb appeal of our aging community landscaping so as to stabilize and protect property values. Attainment of these goals requires a mutual effort among the NRC, TPCA BOD, Management, and all property owners. The NRC is committed to keeping owners informed of our activities through monthly newsletter articles and the availability of committee meeting minutes in the TPCA document room. If you have a question, concern, or suggestion regarding the activities of the NRC, please do not hesitate to contact us at nrc@tidewaterhoa.org. Property Committee Barbara Baker, Secretary Pickleball has arrived in Tidewater: Tennis court #3 now has tan colored lines painted on it for use in playing pickleball. Pickleball is easy to learn and combines aspects of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The social aspects and ability to stay active have made this sport especially popular among seniors. In fact it is the fastest growing sport in the US. Two players can play a singles game; doubles has 4 players. Equipment needs are minimal. Play requires a pickleball racquet, which looks like an oversized ping-pong racquet, and a pickleball, which is similar to a plastic wiffleball. (Equipment can be purchased at local sporting stores or online.) In addition, players wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Check out the USA Pickleball Assoc. web-site (usapa.org) for more information on this sport. The Property Committee is working hard to maintain and enhance the Tidewater buildings, roads, pools, tennis courts and fitness center. If you have any suggestions or concerns regarding these facilities please forward your thoughts to property@tidewaterhoa.org as we look forward to your input. Bill Pearson, Chairperson After ten months of planning, it s here. 4 the Medal of Honor for action in Iraq or Afghanistan. Robin will speak from a parent s point of view and tell her son's story, including how their family adjusted to his leaving for Marine boot camp at Paris Island to Kyle being deployed to Afghanistan in June of Kyle was injured on Nov. 21, 2010; he heroically put himself between an enemy grenade and a fellow Marine. He sustained multiple life threatening injuries and, as one nurse described him when he reached the hospital, he was essentially dead. Kyle s recollection of that day is very spotty. He recalls a feeling of warm water over him; he knew death was near, and he said a prayer. The next thing he remembered was waking up stateside surrounded by his family. He would spend weeks at Bethesda before transferring to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he'd spend more than two years recovering. Kyle had over forty surgeries. Throughout that time Robin was there as his caregiver, providing the best medicine her Marine could ever want: a mother s love. This Medal of Honor recipient received the nation s highest military award because of his selfless sacrifice on November 21st, 2010, but the man behind this heroic action was a product of his parenting and the values they instilled in him. Kyle s humble character and desire to inspire and motivate others will serve him well in his future. He is now attending the University of South Carolina working on his degree while doing motivational speaking across the country. One thing he has learned is not to plan too far ahead. As Kyle says, Be open to where life takes you. Please come to the reception and welcome Robin Carpenter and her husband Jim to Tidewater. 7 Labor Day: What it Means Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, During the year four more states Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations, followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor movement. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable to wear white or seersucker. In US sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the weekend of Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day.
