1 JUNE 2013 President s Message Betty Berginski It is nice to see all the improvements going on around Tidewater. Many people are taking advantage of the new DRB regulations regarding pine trees. I plan to fill out the forms to have a pine tree removed from my front yard that is hovering over my roof and worries me each time there is a storm. Be sure if you plan to remove a tree or make any major landscape changes that you follow the procedures and fill out the DRB forms to get approval. Over the past few months I have been mentioning all of the volunteers in our neighborhood; now I would like to acknowledge all of the employees who help to provide such a pleasant environment in which to live. Universal Protection Services does a fantastic job of representing our community to everyone who comes in through our gates. Their friendly smiles and waves welcome the home owners and provide information for all visitors. Their constant awareness and monitoring of our community and amenities provides us with a safe and secure environment. We commend Captain Brown and his staff for doing such an excellent job. Our Maintenance Supervisor, Steve Koury and his staff, provide the community with many services of which most of us are not even aware of. Their constant inspections, repairs and maintenance of our community facilities are done so efficiently and are taken care of before the neighborhood even notices what needs to be done. Steve does a great deal of research and getting bids for replacements and repairs, always making sure that we get the best deals available. Hats off to Steve and his staff for taking such good care of us. Phoenix, our landscaping contractor, works very hard at making Tidewater Plantation an even more beautiful place to live. They maintain all of our community property. Our entrance way looks especially nice this season. They will be with us for four and half more years under their current contract. Our management service KA Diehl, along with our Community Manager Mel Renkey and his staff, provide many services for the community. They work very closely with the Board of Directors and the DRB to provide documents, records and correspondence for the association. They collect assessment charges and make disbursements, prepare monthly financial statements for the Board and designated committees, and prepare proposed budgets. They also oversee physical plant services, routine maintenance, watchmen and landscape services. These are just a few of the services that they provide. We are very fortunate to have such an efficient and cooperative management service. Many thanks and kudos to our staff members! Betty K.A. Diehl Management Message Mel Renkey, CMCA, AMS, PCAM Tidewater DRB Guidelines Enforcement Information This article addresses item 10. Statuary of the DRB guidelines Vol 2 Section V Exterior non-house items. The following is the wording of item 10: 10. Statuary: Statuary should be limited. Preferred materials are concrete and wood, although metal statuary with a Verdis finish is also acceptable. Plastic statuary is strictly forbidden. All statuary over 18 in height must be submitted for approval by the DRB. They should be located near the house and for the enjoyment of the homeowner, and not in prominent view. My experience since November, as the person responsible for handling DRB violations enforcement, indicates to me that many owners have skipped the important step in this process that is highlighted above and have placed statuary greater than 18 inches in height on their property without the approval of the DRB. At the DRB meeting on April 18th, I reviewed some paragraphs of Section V with the DRB and suggested that the DRB should consider factors other than the 18 inch height requirement in order to meet the intent of the guidelines. The DRB agreed that they would consider all factors when a request was received by them, but that all statues whose heights exceed 18 inches are in violation until a request is received and approved by the DRB. Consequently, if you have been asked to, and have removed statuary that exceeded 18 inches in height, or if you have statuary that exceeds 18 inches, but you haven t displayed it, because you saw the height limitation in the guidelines, you have an opportunity to submit a request for approval of the statuary to the DRB. Please submit any requests to the DRB through the normal channels at the Association Office. Reminder Our job is to assist the Board of Directors, Owners, and their guests, so please feel free to call the management office at and speak to one of the office staff, Mel, Stacy, or Chelsa whenever you need our help. 2 Teal Lake Now Recycles Teal Lake now has blue recycling bins at the end of each building. Your Board has arranged for these convenient bins so that we all can do our part by recycling. Please note the following items may be placed in these blue bins: Newspapers, magazines, junk mail (recommended you shred personal information) Cereal, snack & crackers boxes; corrugated & cardboard boxes (empty & flattened) Bottles & cans (remove & discard caps & lids, empty & rinse out containers) DO NOT USE THESE BLUE BINS FOR THE FOLLOWING: Plastic bags (recycle at grocery stores) Glass cookware & ceramics Styrofoam cups or plates Paper plates & napkins Plastic spoons, forks or knives Light bulbs (recycle used CFLs at any Home Depot) Aluminum foil or trays Other items you can recycle at the Horry County Recycling center on Route 90 include: used motor oil, tires, yard waste, used cooking oil, scrap metal, batteries (all kinds) and electronics (erase all data) COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED Do you like to meet new people? Do you enjoy reaching out to new neighbors, or even old ones, to help them feel comfortable here in Tidewater? Well, we could use your help! Consider joining the Communications Committee. What do we do? We are responsible for publishing the annual Tidewater phone directory, we greet and welcome new neighbors to Tidewater and we keep the Tidewater web site updated. Also the Newsletter Team is part of our Communications team. So if you think you would like to help us out in any of these areas, please contact us at We look forward to your help! Government Liaison Committee Robert Cavanaugh The City Council passed on first reading the FY2014 budget. It is slightly down from the 2013 final estimate, and will cause no change in the City s millage rate for property tax. Thus, North Myrtle Beach will retain one of the lowest rates in the state. The Sports Park is on schedule for spring opening next year, and advanced bookings for sports events already ensure that bond and operating expenses will be covered with revenue. The Robbers Roost development received a go from City Council. The opening of this new development is expected to result in a collection of quality, medium size stores yet to be identified. Construction should start in October and will take up to a year to open. There has been no effort yet on the improvements to the marina zoning issues which were promised at the marina workshop. This issue will be raised this month. Property Committee Barbara Baker, Secretary With the onset of the warmer weather lots of things are happening in our gardens some good and others not so good. This is an ideal time to walk your garden and look for early signs of problems. Do any plants have misshapen or discolored leaves? Are there bugs or filmy things on them? If so you may want to collect a sample of a few of the infested leaves (seal it in a plastic bag) and take it to a reputable garden center or contact the Horry County Extension Service ( ) in Conway for treatment options. With the nicer weather many of us are busy picking and planting our annuals for seasonal color. For a better show it is important to match the plants to your location. While the plant tags guide us in picking plants that match the amount of sun they will receive we don t always think about what they will be growing in. Potted plants tend to do better in less sunny locations with fresh potting soil. Our sandy soil tends to be low in nutrients and higher than average in salinity so when planting directly into existing planting beds use a planting mix. Your plants they will thank you with a healthier show of blooms. TPCA Contact Information Condo Associations Contact Information K.A. We have placed two benches on Spinnaker Dr. one at the basketball court and one at the entrance by the parking lot next to the guard shack. If you have any suggestions or concerns please forward your thoughts to as we look forward to your input. Tidewater Plantation Community Association local charities, our nation s military families and just great fun; get your entry fee in by July 1st and save $25. The Folds of Honor/TCTC/Titleist fundraiser was another success this year. It consisted of four long days on the number three tee box in cooler temperatures than we normally have this time of year. In spite of some rain and wind, the fundraiser was well supported by both our Tidewater golfers and many out of town players. Thanks to all the many volunteers who contributed to the success of t h i s e ve n t, especially Billy Karl who devoted four plus days to this event. This year we had a volunteer who will be competing in the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Pageant; the winner of the pageant will go on to represent South Carolina in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City later this year. Emily Grey Wayne is a delightful young lady from our area. She attended North Myrtle Beach HS, is an accomplished dancer and a delight to be around. Emily scheduled for two hours, she graciously extended her stay at the event to 4 hours signing autographs, taking pictures and spinning the TCTC Wheel. We wish her the best; could she be the next Miss America? originally was T h i s Tournament y e a r s Kick-Off Preparations for the Tidewater Patriot Day Charity Golf Tournament never seem to stop. It s not too early to put together your team and save your place in the biggest golf event of the year at Tidewater. The tournament is a celebration of the charity that is Tidewater, supporting Bill Pearson Reception has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 26th at 5 pm in the TPCA Building. The Kick Off Reception is one of the highlights of TCTC s year, always an inspiring occasion. It is a time of reflection on the positive contributions to our area made possible by the funds raised all during the year concluding with the Tidewater Patriot Day Charity Golf Tournament on Labor Day. Major Ed Pulido from the Folds of Honor Foundation will present two college scholarships to a local family. 5 Tastebuds Flossie Chapman The Tastebuds are in need of community members to run and support the program if it is to survive. Its original mission was to have people get to know each other in Tidewater. The four times we meet a year the dinner attendees were to be completely different people. Now for the most part it is the same old friends having a wonderful meal together, but this can be and is done without the structure of Tastebuds. If you are interested in continuing this Tidewater tradition please get in touch with Nancy Blythe at or her at nancytblythe@msn.com. Tidewater Bowling Barbara Lefke On April 17 the Tidewater Ladies bowling group held its annual luncheon at Clark s Restaurant in Little River. Awards were given to everyone who bowled at least 10 times this season. Joann Nelson was the star with the highest series of 531 and the highest average of 145. Barb Lefke had the highest game of 221. Cindy Maher, a visitor from Canada, surpassed us with a high game of 225 and a high series of 596; however, she did not qualify for a prize since she did not meet the required 10 attendances. A good time was had by all sitting outside on a beautiful spring day. Pictured are: Carol Snyder, Joann Nelson, Cinde Woodcock, Barb Lefke, Ethel Huband, Blair Hubbard, Connie Muirhead, Betty Kraemer, Sue Taylor, and Helen Ashby. Tidewater Plantation Community Association Dart League Dinner The annual Dart League Dinner was held on Tuesday, April 23rd. The dinner and the dart league share a common denominator, FUN! The night celebrated the achievements and the antics of the dart league year. After the dinner, the entertainment and awards portion of the evening started with an eloquent monolog by Rich Nofi. He recounted the infamous stories of the year and made special awards to some infamous people. John Coyle with the help of his wife, Bev, then gave awards out to individuals and teams. First place was taken by John Coyle s team, second went to Tom Presby s team, and third place was awarded to Rich Nofi s team. Thanks to the scorekeepers, Bev Coyle, Jane Meyers, Marilyn Drange, Paula, Koury, and Lenny DiGregorio for their constancy in their roles. Thanks to Marilyn Drange and George Koury for their computer skills. Lenny DeMarco and George Koury ran the raffle each week which was much appreciated. Thanks also go out to Denise, Tiffany, and Shannon for taking good care of us every Friday night. John and Bev Coyle as the organizers of the dart league deserve a special thank you. Nine and Dine Harriette Nichols Tidewater Thank You The Helping Hand would like to thank all of you at Tidewater who helped made donations to the Peanut Butter & Jelly drive. You collected 75 lbs. Call if you have questions or need information. Day Trippin In April 2013 Brookgreen Gardens was named one of the top ten gardens in the United States by TripAdvisor. It is a title wellearned. The Gardens are a magical place filled with both natural and man-made beauty. We have in our midst one of America s premier sculpture gardens and it is simply amazing! Brookgreen also offers lectures on the Gullah tradition, sculpture, planting, and other topics. They run a boat trip down the Waccamaw that truly gives you a sense of how the three rice plantations that comprise Brookgreen worked and show the natural beauty and animals (alligators!) that line the river. There are treks back into the old plantations themselves with an explanation of how the plantations began and were laid out. There are many trails to walk throughout Brookgreen. Most of them identify various plants and sculpture and some illustrate the history of the Gardens and plantations. One of the trails ends at the labyrinth along the river where a walking meditation can be done. 6 The zoo and the butterfly house are probably the favorites of the youngsters but for the young at heart a butterfly that lands on a hand is still a thrill. The aviary in the zoo is a wonderful spot for observing the birds of South Carolina up close. The otters are always fun to watch in their natural habitat, the river, and a tank that allows access to their underwater antics. Brookgreen Gardens in located off Route 17 in Murrells Inlet, SC.
