2 Design Review Board Nancy Hudson, Chairperson The DRB would like to thank all the residents who have submitted applications for their outdoor projects, including edging. If you would like to volunteer and make a difference in the community, the DRB has two positions to fill. We would like to hear from anyone in the community who might be interested in serving. The deadline to submit your resume is October 8, Please send us a resume outlining your qualifications and reason for your interest in serving as a DRB member to drb@tidewaterhoa.org. Our meetings in October will be on the second and fourth Mondays. In order to be placed on the agenda, applications for tree removals, landscape changes and home improvements should be received a week prior to the next scheduled meeting. The Design Review Board is always available to answer questions via telephone or at drb@tidewaterhoa.org. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. North Myrtle Beach City Council Bob Cavanaugh, Councilman North Myrtle Beach Sports Park The new 10-foot wide trail that makes a full loop round the 25 acre lake is now open. The City's Sports Tourism program is doing well. In July alone, we had over 9 major events, with approximately 1000 teams and over 4000 participants. The estimate on the economic impact is over $15 million. Property Committee Barbara Baker, Secretary At the TPCA building, the parking lot was cleared for larger parking spaces. The driveway in the front was widened and 2 guest spaces and another handicapped parking space have been added. Also at the TPCA, wood boards were replaced because the wood was rotting and all of the stair/ramp railings were painted. The tree canopy was raised along Spinnaker Drive by the community pool and one tree was removed. All the old turf was removed and the soil was prepped for the new zoysia grass that was installed by Phoenix at no additional charge. A holly shrub located at the end of Heshbon at Little River Neck Road will be replaced by Phoenix. Mulch was applied to the garden areas on Tidewater Drive by the Bluff s pool. This will be done every year. The Property Committee is working hard to maintain and enhance the aesthetic look of Tidewater. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please forward your thoughts to property@tidewaterhoa.org. We look forward to your input. Natural Resources Committee Ann Lippincott, Chairperson Following months of consultation with representatives from Clemson University Extension Services and urban foresters from the City of North Myrtle Beach, the Natural Resources Committee (NRC) has formulated and presented a proposal to the TPCA Board of Directors for the protection and preservation of our infrastructure and the restoration of our roadway right-of-way areas. Owing to the mature, and in many areas unmanaged, forest throughout Tidewater Plantation, there are areas being adversely affected by the lack of sun, root invasion, and overhanging canopies. These factors are causing buckling and cracking of roadways and curbing, storm drain, water line, sewer pipe invasion, and the unsustainability of grass particularly in the right-of-way areas between individual lot lines and the curbing. The Property Committee, the Design Review Board, and the NRC are inventorying those trees causing or potentially causing damage to the infrastructure and inhibiting the growth of grass and other plantings. Those trees will require removal, canopy and root pruning, possible installation of root barrier, and regular maintenance going forward. The restoration proposal forwarded to the BOD by the NRC in August details the following points: The BOD has determined (April 3, 2014) that grass is the preferred planting in the roadway right-of-way areas. In order to maintain grass on individual lot frontage areas, some owners may find that their efforts are hampered by the growth of tree canopies and root systems over the years. In such cases, owners may have to undertake canopy and root pruning and soil replenishment efforts to insure any possibility of the successful planting of sod. This would require an ongoing maintenance regimen going forward due to the continuing growth of our forest. Areas currently planted with Asiatic Jasmine may be maintained. For those owners who must abandon sod in the right-of-way area, only after efforts have been exhausted to sustain sod, the ground cover Asiatic Jasmine (and the use of pine straw until such time as the Asiatic Jasmine has completely filled in as a ground cover) has been recommended to the BOD as the only allowable alternate planting in order to maintain a cohesive look throughout the community. TPCA common area frontages are proposed to be restored over a suggested five-year period, depending on the cost factor, through joint efforts of the Property Committee, Natural Resources Committee, Design Review Board, and the Board of Directors. Existing irrigation is currently being refurbished and activated, common areas will be evaluated for the installation of new irrigation, tree canopy and root pruning, and sod installation. Areas currently planted with Asiatic Jasmine will be maintained. The first five TPCA common areas of the proposed phased restoration project have been included in the Property Committee s 2015 landscaping budget submission. Some of the restoration work will be budgeted annually as part of the Property Committee s landscaping budget and also the tree budget under TPCA Operations. 2 Report suspicious activity or persons to NMB AND

3 Yard of the Month The Property Committee is pleased to announce the Yard of the Month for September is the home of Mike & Daisy Stiebel, 4970 South Island Drive. Promotion Committee Bill Pearson, Chairperson How much did you raise? How many players did you have? These are the typical questions I get after the tournament weekend. Most are curious about the success of the tournament. Money raised and people who showed up are the common ways to measure success. I will get to those answers but first here are a few less noticeable things during the tournament that meant a lot to me. We always invite military families to the tournament as our guests for a mini vacation, a retreat from their normal routines. It s a small thank you from us to them for all the sacrifices that m i l i t a r y f a m i l i e s m a k e Opening Ceremonies throughout the years. This year for various reasons there was a need for childcare for many of the families. In spite of the short Tidewater Plantation Community Association notice and the addition of more children as the weekend went along, Tidewater rose to the occasion. The entire Drummond family, Sharon Hawk and Connie Muirhead provided loving care and allowed the moms and dads, of up to 10 children, to get a break for part of their days at Tidewater. Activities included mini golf, dolphin cruises, visits to the pool and playtime provided by very experienced grandparents. The tired looks that come with traveling eight plus hours in a car with three little ones soon turned into smiles the next day when they found out that they were treated like family members at Tidewater and that there were grandparents waiting to help watch the kids. The parents were relieved and the kids were entertained with fun things to do together. When these parents look back at their time at Tidewater, I know that many will say that was the highlight of their visit to Tidewater. Another measure of success for me is the way that local businesses opened their doors and hearts to our military guest families. Damon s Rib, The Shack, Logan s Roadhouse, Firehouse Subs and more provided meals. Major Ed and Wounded Warrior Guests Thanks to H a r o l d Wiegel for free cruises to see the d o l p h i n s and Tribal Island Miniature Golf at Harbour View for free golf for all the kids. We could not have been treated any better than the way we were treated by Harriss D Antignac and his entire staff at River Hills Golf & Country Club. Harriss even provided free practice rounds for the military guests. The residents at River Hills had a chance to see a Patriot Golf Day event and now are interested in doing one next year. The best personal memory I have of this year s event came from Asher Montgomery, the little five year-old son of Andrew and Julia Montgomery, this year's Folds of Honor recipients. This little red haired guy sporting a Mohawk haircut, without any prompting from his parents, when leaving the awards luncheon on Monday afternoon turned and looked back to say, Goodbye, Bill, I love you. All the months of planning and work were all worth it to me, because of those five words. How much was raised for charity this year?. $50, ($1, more than last year) How many players in the tournament But that only tells part of the story. Artisan of the Month The October Artisan of the Month is Audrey Poole. Audrey has been doing decorative painting for over 15 years. Over the past 9 years in Tidewater you have seen a variety of her porcelain painting, decorative painting and holiday gourds. She continues to evolve her art interests and endeavors. Recently she has found two new artistic interests; painting on fabric and pastel art. Her fabric painting includes decorative pillows, handmade and hand painted purses; as well as, upcycling children s denim clothes. Audrey can be found at the Sunset River Marketplace every Thursday working on her pastels. She is a member of the Waccamaw Art and Craft Guild, Seacoast Art Guild and the Calabash Pastel Group. See Audrey s exhibit during the month of October in the lobby of the Tidewater Grille Clubhouse. High Tea Linda Pombo hosted High Tea for a few ladies on Friday, September 5th in her home. She prepared a menu of soup, scones, breads, petite sandwiches, strudel, salad, desserts, and, of course, teas. What a treat! Pictured below from left to right are Linnea Knecht, Pam Mulcahy, Karen Hicks, Nancy Blythe, Pat Barnhill, Linda Pombo and Anita Rotter. Yes, they wore their best hats and pearls! Linnea s dress was a special throwback in time as it was her great aunt s dress. Even after 90+ years, it was still beautiful. Golf Course News Archie Lemon, General Manager Fall golf season at Tidewater will be back in full-swing and with the recent renovations, Tidewater Golf Club is full steam ahead on getting the course back in good graces with not only its golf customers, but the golf writers and golf course raters. Our goal is simple and straightforward: To provide a golf experience that exceeds our customer s expectations. But before the renovation information, I would like to use this forum to say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to all of the TCTC Committee members, volunteers and participants for making such a difference to all of the charities that are supported on an annual basis here at Tidewater. Everything culminated over the Labor Day weekend with our annual Patriot Day Golf Tournament. If you did not participate, you missed something very special. Not only were the local charities appreciative, the military families that were present to carry the flag for the Folds of Honor Foundation warmed our hearts so much that it was impossible to hold back the tears. As Major Ed Pulido can say better than anyone, Freedom is not free! Your neighbors at Tidewater are making a difference in the lives of people that are less fortunate. The goal each year is to always exceed monies previously raised, so in case you may have missed out this year, you have plenty of time to get ready for the 2015 TCTC fund-raising events. We have decided to delay our fall over-seeding of tees, fairways and green surrounds until the second week of November. This will help ensure that the fall golf played at Tidewater will be exceptional! Speaking of fall golf, almost as exciting as our re-opening will be the Americans bringing the Ryder Cup back to the US! As I m writing this article in early September and prior to the Ryder Cup Matches being played, I am constantly reminded of Ben Crenshaw s famous words, I believe in fate and I have a good feeling about this. The green complexes have been expanded back to their original size and feature Mini Verde ultra-dwarf Bermuda grass. We actually picked up more than 10,000 sq. ft. of putting

7 surfaces as, over time, our greens grew smaller as the trees grew taller. Other than new greens, there were improvements made to drainage, bunkers, irrigation and landscaping. Sunlight enhancement and increased air flow will also result in improved playing conditions. The greens were our main focus, but we also sodded many other areas of the course. We reduced our pine straw beds by over 2.5 acres as many areas received new Celebration sod. That s over 110,000 sq. ft. of new sod! By decreasing the size of our pine straw beds, increasing the size of some fairways and complimenting certain areas with landscape ornamentals, Tidewater Golf Course will be even more beautiful and picturesque than before. Most of the landscape ornamentals (crape myrtles, dogwoods, azaleas, etc.) will not be planted until this fall season when the temperatures are cooler. Hope to see you on the links this fall! The renovated and restored Tidewater Golf Club awaits both you and your golfing friends!
