1 driven by 2017 YEAR IN REVIEW Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar is proud to report on our 2017 season. Another year of tremendous growth, in all aspects of team activity, make the club a benchmark of how a cycling team should contribute to its community. We hope you find our 2017 season recap as compelling as we do. Racing and Results When someone thinks of cycling, they think of winning races. Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar is a team that wins and places consistently across disciplines and categories, year after year. These results are directly tied to the team-focused approach, where the team s win is more important than any individual achievement. There were also some events that punctuated the team s development, reaching some of the highest levels available to a team of this caliber. Highlights from 2017 include: Total podiums across road and cyclocross for 2017 was 72, of which 32 were victories. Overall individual win (Regina Legge) and team win for New England Crit Week Series Overall individual win (Senta Burton) and 3rd Place (Regina Legge) in the Velotooler Cup Spring Series Two overall New England Bicycle Racing Association individual rankings: Elite Women: Road Race & Criterium (Regina Legge) In addition to those overall wins: - 4th place overall in Elite Men: Criterium (Cole Archambault) - 5th Place overall in Elite Men: Road Race (Cole Archambault) - 2nd Place overall in Cat 3 Women: Criterium (Sarah Shipley)
2 team achievements Women s team By far and away, 2017 was the year for the GLV Women s Team! The women of Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar utterly dominated the road racing scene in New England and beyond. While they continued to be the most active women s racing team in the region, in just their third year they took home all of the series titles in the region, including the Velotooler Spring Series (Senta Burton), New England Crit Week (Team), and topped the NEBRA Series Rankings in both the Road Race and Criterium (Regina Legge). Building from a strong 2016, many of our women earned their elite upgrades and assembled Green Line Velo s first women s USA Cycling Domestic Elite Team. Coming up in 2018 the women will look to showcase their talents at more national level races and attend more PRT races and National Championships. They have shown that success, fulfillment and growth is best achieved when individual efforts are combined to achieve a greater goal than they thought possible as individuals. elite Men s team The elite men lost a lot of firepower after two of our stars moved on to professional teams after last season. The focus of the team shifted to a rebuilding phase while maintaining our competitive presense in regional events. That certainly didn t stop our riders going out traveling to big national races, including USA Crits Speed Week, USA Cycling National Championships, Intelligentsia Cup and Gateway Cup. There were some big opportunities and we were looking forward to a season of competitive local racing where teamwork and strategy would need to make up for the loss of firepower. We did what GLV does best all season long; we raced as a team. Knocking off early victories and podiums, all of the hard work and strategy culminated at a win during the first race of New England Crit Week at the Greenfield Criterium. Cole Archambault took the win after lapping the field and then receiving an escort around the course for the last 7 laps by his teammates. After a quick rest and rebuild at summer camp, the team traveled to Chicago for 10 days of racing at the Intelligenstia Cup. The elite team pulled off 2 victories, 2 podiums, and logged countless laughs and memories during the trip. development team Our development squad has grown every year, finding riders in the amateur categories and propelling them to success in racing. This year our development team grew significantly, taking on 5 new riders, and proceeded to get even stronger. Our team was present in numbers at nearly every local race, factoring prominently in how the races played out. On the road we had 4 different riders win 7 different races, many additional podiums, and most importantly, we had 3 riders upgrade to category 3 (Morgan Rockett, Nick Huber, and Ken Greim). Come cyclocross season, we put riders on the podium in major races like Gloucester, upgraded Michael Shinall to category 3, and graduated Gennaro Ameno to the Elite CX squad. coaching Our teammate Josh Friedman, owner ATP Race Consulting continues to offer more to our team than just training plans and the weekly call-in. Josh bestows upon us his vast knowledge that he has accrued through his international cycling experiences and years running his coaching organization. Josh is keen to show us that we are competing not only against others in the peloton, the course or the elements, but also against our greatest opponent, self-doubt. Exercises in self-discipline, situational awareness, mid-race communication and efficiency are at the core of Josh s teaching principles. Any cycling coach can write an interval plan for an athlete, but Josh s greatest contribution to our team is helping us become the best versions of ourselves. That achievement, combined with our team-first approach has earned us an abundance of palmares and successful community events. A majority of the riders on GLV are coached by Josh, and we owe a lot of our successes to his dedication to us.
3 Race Promotion purgatory road race The Purgatory Road Race in Sutton, MA is one of the most prominent road races on the east coast and is the jewel in our crown. The race draws nearly 500 cyclists from all over the region and serves as an unmatched opportunity for our club and our partners to reach cyclists from beyond the Boston area. Purgatory is an all-hands-on-deck affair. One of our mandatory requirements to be a member of our club is to contribute to the creation, management and execution of Purgatory. While we may be also known for our community outreach at other events and support towards advocacy initiatives, Purgatory is the best representation of our ethos. We feel that a bicycle race created and run by, and for, bicycle racers is the best way we can bolster local racing opportunities. It is a way to show other clubs within New England that even though we are a smaller team, it is possible to organize a well-respected event. The small host town of Sutton has continued to support our event for the past 10 years. As a token of our gratitude, each year we donate our event proceeds to various charities and programs within the town. Thousands of dollars have been donated to the Sutton Schools Solar Project, Sutton Police K-9 Fund and the Sutton Food Pantry. In 2017, $1,000 was donated to the Sutton Food Pantry. The Purgatory Road Race only grows stronger because of Green Line Velo s commitment to running the best race possible. Each year we make improvements to enhance the racers and officials experience which has earned Purgatory Road Race the title of Massachusetts State Championship Road Race, which it has held since Over its course of eight editions, the Purgatory Road Race has had four of its men s elite champions attain a contract with a UCI Continental team following their win at Purgatory. Though the greatest testament to the success of Purgatory is the hundreds of cyclists that return year after year and the USA Cycling officials that strive to work our event. necxbar finals CYCLOCROSS RACE While we are roadies at heart, our focus on cyclocross has grown stronger every year. We became involved with running the New England Cyclocross Best All-Around Rider Finals race through our friend, USA Cycling official and Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Road Coordinator Alan Atwood. We have known Alan since our undergraduate days racing in the ECCC. He approached us in 2013 asking for help to run the New England Regional Cyclocross Championships held in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Since 2013, we have helped Alan co-promote the race and run several different formats and courses for the event which is now the site of the New England Cyclocross Best All-Around Rider Finals. As a team we have put our collective efforts together to breathe new life into the event and get regional cyclocross racers excited about gritty, cold and windy racing in New England again. Each year we put a strong focus on improving the course little by little at a venue that offers slight variety. This year was the best iteration yet and we were excited as a team to hear the improving feedback each and every year. It went from a dying race to a thriving race with attendance that approaches Purgatory-levels. team activities training camps Another highlight of the 2017 year were our two training camps, which provided an opportunity for our team members to get together, get fast and bond as a group. The camps allow members to hone skills, discuss goals and share knowledge to raise everyone s level. It is also a chance to recharge our competitive batteries in a relaxing and fun setting. In February, we escaped the cold winter in Boston and headed to Santa Barbara, CA for a week prior to the beginning of the road season. In July, our mid-season training camp found us closer to home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire for three days of riding. This year we were able to successfully dodge the rain and enjoyed barbecuing, camping, and leaving our mark on the Strava leader-boards. For a lot of riders, this served as the perfect tune up for a week of racing in Chicago for the Intelligentsia Cup.
4 hosted rides and clinics Cycling can be a difficult sport to start out in, as there is a high initial investment in equipment and a steep learning curve of skills. For the second year, we supported riders from our sponsor Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and their clients as they prepared for Best Buddies Challenge-Hyannis Port, a charity ride for developmentally-challenged individuals. Weekly rides were hosted starting from the offices of SVB in Newton, MA, catering to all levels of cyclists training for the Best Buddies ride. This six week program gave the SVB riders a chance to ask questions about riding, increase their bike handling skills, gain familiarity with riding in a pack and log training miles. In July, we also ran a fully supported 64 mile ride to Cape Ann Brewing in Gloucester MA for SVB employees and clients, complete with follow cars for quick refueling and wheel changes, our own category 1 racers to pull the peloton along, and a great post-ride dinner complete with rider awards. This gave riders who had participated in the Best Buddies challenge, and others, the opportunity to have a ride experience as if they were at a training camp for an elite team. Weekly community Group Rides On Wednesday nights during the spring and summer, we bring together up to 100 cyclists (and over 1500 unique participants each year) from the greater-boston area to ride bicycles. The ride is designed to appeal to a wide range of cyclists. We lead 4 different groups ranging from a shorter, leisure ride up to a fast-paced, fitness ride. In all groups we emphasize following the rules of the road and teach etiquette and safety for riding in a group. After the ride, we all gather at the local pizza place, our sponsor Otto Pizza, for food and drinks. The social aspect makes the ride the only one of its kind in the Boston area, and we feel it is crucial to growing and strengthening the local cycling community. While our group ride is well attended by cyclist of all abilities, there is still a large discrepancy between the number of men and women who attend. This year, we made a specific commitment to welcoming women to our group ride by hosting a women s specific ride. This group ride, led by members of our women s team, offered a chance for women riders to interact with our women racers in a non-intimidating environment. The event was so well-received that we had many requests to hold women s-specific rides more often, which we plan to do in Social Media Outreach In addition to face-to-face interactions, we share our cycling experiences with the community through social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. We use these venues to invite the community to our group rides and events, publish live updates of races, share our successes, promote our favorite sponsor products and exude the cycling lifestyle. We are extremely fortunate to have these mutually beneficial relationships with sponsors who share our vision. While our sponsors are defining their brand identity and connecting with their audience, we are growing the sport of cycling. With every positive experience and interaction, people are more likely to associate cycling with cool, fun, and exciting and ultimately more likely to get out and ride or race their bicycle. To see our latest social media outreach, please visit our sites below: Conclusion Over the past nine years, we have devoted much of our lives to making our team the best it can be. Thank you all for your support this past year, 2018 is shaping up to be an even bigger year with continued focus on developing our racers, growing the Purgatory Road Race, and launching even more communityspecific ride events.
