1 driven by 2015: A YEAR IN REVIEW By every metric, 2015 was a banner year for our team. From results to race promotion to community outreach, every year continues to be our best year ever. Our president, Dave Warner, in a year-end said, We all bring what we can to the table. That decision to swing your legs out of bed and kit up in the dark, that decision to sprint one more time out of the last interval, that decision to smile and introduce yourself to another rider after a race, to organize logistics, or to drop someone off on the way home late at night. Those decisions are yours to make, but when we take a step back, and we look at each and every rider, and each and every decision, those parts add up. They add up to us, and they add up to GLV. RACING AND RESULTS Not only did we get bigger, adding a Women s Road Team for the first time, we got better, winning 50% more races (39 in 2015) and standing on the podium over twice as many times (101 in 2015) as Over a third (10 out of 26) of our riders below category 1 upgraded, and we clipped in at the start whistle 843 times at non-training races, which averages over 26 races per member and a 60% increase over Our team has redefined the racing climate in New England. At every level in men s and women s cycling, we are the team to beat. We bring numbers to change the race dynamic from individuals competing to team strategies, elevating the level of racing in every category. We believe that treating cycling as a team sport, rather than an individual one, makes racing more challenging, safer and more fun for everyone involved. In our development team, great teamwork allowed Smith Anderson and Mike Heiss to get their category 2 upgrades and move to the Elite Team. Gennaro Ameno, Jose Ordovas and Adam Bernstein all worked hard for their category 3 upgrades. The Elite Team dominated the local racing scene and travelled more than ever to step up to the next level of racing. After getting his category 1 upgrade, Dom Caiazzo joined Cole Archambault, Josh Friedman, AJ Moran, Sam Rosenholtz and Dave Warner on the national circuit Pro/1 races. They battled the nation s best criterium racers at Athens Twilight, Wilmington Gran Prix, Tour of Somerville, Air Force Classic, Intelligentsia Cup, Rochester Twilight, Chris Thater Memorial, Gateway Cup, Mayor s Cup, and CT Cycling Festival. The addition of the Women s Team for the 2015 road season has been an unquestionable success, both in results and continuation of our recruiting ethos. From listening to community members and friends, we believe that women face higher barriers to entry in road racing than their male counterparts. By opening the club to female role models who share our values, we believe we can help develop women s cycling in the same way we did post-collegiate racers in These women were quick to learn the GLV-way of racing together, which paid off by getting Regina Legge and Tonia Hafner the results to upgrade and join Leslie Lupien on the Elite Team. Natasja Brooijmans and Julie van der Hoop also both upgraded in cyclocross to join Regina Legge competing in UCI level races across the region. Next year we will bring on two more women and compete in the Women s NCC/NRC calendar for the first time.

2 A few of our more memorable racing highlights of the year include: Massachusetts State and New England Elite Men s Criterium Championships (Gran Prix of Beverly and Concord Criterium) New England Crit Week Team Overall Elite Men s Championship 2nd in Men s Pro/1/2 Individual Omnium at the Longsjo Classic Women s 3/4 win at the Mayor s Cup in Boston Women s P/1/2/3, Men s Pro/1/2/3, and Men s 3 win at the Nutmeg Classic Criterium RACE PROMOTION The Purgatory Road Race in Sutton, MA is one of the most prominent road races on the east coast. The race draws nearly 500 cyclists from all over the world and serves as an unmatched opportunity for our club and our partners to reach cyclists from beyond the Boston area. This year, in addition to the fleet of Zipcars we use as follow cars each year, our partner ATP Racing provided racers with analysis of a winning ride and a workout specifically targeted to our course in the lead up to the race. While many races are disappearing from the calendar, the Purgatory Road Race only grows stronger because of Green Line Velo s commitment to running the best race possible. Each year we make improvements to enhance the racers and officials experience which has earned Purgatory Road Race the title of Massachusetts State Championship Road Race, which it has held since The success of the race each year has provided us with the opportunity make charitable donations to the host town of Sutton, MA. Over the years we have donated thousands of dollars to the Sutton Schools Solar Project, Sutton Police K-9 Fund and the Sutton Food Pantry. We believe our contribution to the community illustrates to the town how grateful we are to host the race there each year and we trust the town will continue to share our enthusiasm. Green Line Velo also co-promotes the New England Cyclocross All-Around Rider Finals in Fitchburg, MA each November. Over 500 eager participants vie for the title of best all-around rider over a challenging off-road course in unpredictable, and usually sub-freezing, New England weather. Green Line Velo donates staff to design and build the course, run registration, marshal crossing points and clean up after the race when the day is done. This year we received an overwhelming response for our new course design, and hope to keep it running for many years to come. WEEKLY SOCIAL GROUP RIDES On Wednesday nights during the spring and summer, we bring together cyclists each week (and close to 1000 unique participants each year) from the greater-boston area to ride bicycles. The ride is designed to appeal to a wide range of cyclists. We lead four different groups from a shorter leisure ride up to a fast-paced fitness ride. In all groups we emphasize following the rules of the road and teach etiquette for riding in a group. After the ride, we all gather at Otto Pizza on Commonwealth Ave for pizza and drinks. The social aspect makes the ride the only one of its kind in the Boston area, and we feel it is crucial to growing and strengthening the local cycling community. Men and women make new friends, find riding buddies and, on more than one case, even meet a future spouse! We have also gained a number of teammates from riders who discovered us through the ride. We know this ride is one of our club s most important avenues for development and outreach, and we are dedicated to making sure we have enough members to host a safe ride week after week. PEDRO S BIKE WASH Each year during the cyclocross season, we partner with our sponsor Pedro s to run bike washing stations at some of the region s biggest races. Whether the conditions are dusty or muddy, every racer appreciates a clean bike (and face) after a hard race. We supply hoses, stands, cleaning supplies and lube to keep everyone s bike running safely and smoothly. MAINTENANCE CLINICS Green Line Velo hosts bicycle maintenance clinics at our sponsor shop, Landry s Bicycles, to teach basic bicycle maintenance skills to cyclists. These clinics are open to the public and teach essentials such as changing a flat tire and cleaning and lubing a chain. Equipped with these skills, new cyclists enjoy a better experience on the bike and are confident to explore new routes without fear of getting stranded.

3 SOCIAL MEDIA OUTREACH In addition to face-to-face interactions, we share our cycling experiences with the community through social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. We use these venues to invite the community to our group rides and events, publish live updates of races, share our successes (and failures), promote our favorite sponsor products and exude the cycling lifestyle. This year two of our sponsors gave us unique opportunities to expand our social media reach and influence. Zipcar decided to feature us on their blog as part of their Ziptopia series, telling our story through a short video. They filmed the complete experiences surrounding our Wednesday night group ride and the final day of the Longsjo Classic, the legendary Fitchburg Criterium. The video showcases cycling from multiple angles, from social and fun to gruesomely difficult to immensely rewarding. This video exposed over a thousand viewers, many with no association to cycling, to our team and competitive cycling in general. This video may be found here: behind-the-wheel/green-line-velo-video. Our clothing sponsor, Craft Sportswear, asked us to take over their Instagram account during our home race, the TD Bank Mayor s Cup. We shared photos from the exciting day of racing to thousands of Craft s followers. Our team and the Boston criterium were exhibited alongside other teams Craft supports including the US Nordic Ski Team and World Tour cycling team Orica-Greenedge. This opportunity for cycling outreach on a global scale demonstrates our commitment to holding ourselves to the highest quality standards in everything we do. We are extremely fortunate to have these mutually beneficial relationships with sponsors who share our vision. While our sponsors are defining their brand identity and connecting with their audience, we are growing the sport of cycling. With every positive experience and interaction, people are more likely to associate cycling with cool, fun, and exciting and ultimately more likely to get out and ride or race their bicycle. To see our latest social media outreach, please visit our sites below: TRAINING CAMPS Another highlight of the 2015 year was our two training camps, which provide an opportunity for our team members to get together, get fast and bond as a group. The camps allow members to hone their skills, discuss goals and how to achieve them and share knowledge to raise everyone s level. It is also a chance to recharge our competitive batteries in a relaxing and fun setting. In February, we escaped the snowpocalypse in Boston and headed to San Diego for a week of training prior to the beginning of the road season. In July, our mid-season training camp found us closer to home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire for three days of riding, barbecuing and camping. CONCLUSION In 2015, we, Green Line Velo, through our racer development, coaching and mentoring programs, community outreach, and promotion of two major New England races have demonstrated our commitment to growing the sport of cycling. Over the past seven years, we have devoted much of our lives to making our club the best it can be.
