6 Our article this month was a request from Daniel & Phelica Scott, State Education Chairman, to share something our club has done several times. This activity not only provides a service to our members, but it provided Fun and Fellowship as well. All that being said here is what was done. Our club wanted new dresses. We wanted something different not just off the rack. So we had a Club Sewing Bee. Two of our ladies designed and picked out fabric for club approval. Club members were told If you attend and help with the Sewing Bees even if you can t sew your dress will only cost you the price of the fabric and trim. Dates were decided on and plans went into action to have two Saturday Sewing Bees. Each Saturday started with coffee and sweets. The ladies were assigned their activity for the day. The ladies that could sew and came with their Sergers or Sewing machines went to their places. The non-sewing ladies were given jobs according to where they wished to work (cutting, ironing, threading elastic, threading ribbon, pinning trim, etc.) Each lady brought a salad to share at noon. After lunch we all went back to work until around 4:30p.m. or so. After straightening up, as we left everything where we had ended. Oh, did we mention we had a gracious couple that allowed us to take over their upstairs play room for the two Sewing Bees. Anyway, each work day ended with us meeting our Partners for dinner at a locale Restaurant. Sometimes we were so motivated that we went back after dinner to work on the dresses some more. This time we had our partners that helped with any of the non-sewing jobs they felt comfortable doing. At the end of the two Club Sewing Bees each lady had a new Club Dress and their partner a tie. For those ladies that could not attend the Sewing Bee a fee was paid to the club and those that did attend made their dress. There weren t that many that did not attend as they didn t want to miss the Fun and Fellowship had by all in attendance. We do want to stress a lot of planning goes into this type of a Club Activity, but the rewards are well worth the effort. We made two club outfits this way and the bonding of the members makes us kind of sad when all is finished and very proud when we wear our new outfits to Festivals, District Functions and Club Visitations. If you want more detailed information on this kind of activity for your club or District give us a call at or us at: barbarasewing@sbcglobal.net Sincerely, Cecil & Barbara Burton

7 Alva Twisters - Dances are at 7 PM Zion Lutheran Church Hall in Alva 212 Maple Street President: Rod & Lois Ford ALVA TWISTER TALES Even with very little dancing taking place during the summer months in the Northwest District, several of the Alva Twisters still managed to keep in practice. Some traveled to Branson, Mo. to dance to Fred Trujillo and Bob Jones. The Branson agenda was a little different this year with all the square dancing and associated activities being held in the host hotel, The Camden Inn. This hotel was less than one quarter mile from the Branson outlet mall. It was, however, all downhill which caused some problems climbing back up particularly if you had been doing some heavy duty shopping there. Several dancers even rode the multiple zip line system in Branson. All maintained that it was really fun and one was heard saying that if we did it again next year that he might even consider opening his eyes. After arriving back from Branson, the following weekend, July 10 th and 11 th, was the fifteenth Annual Route 66 weekend held in Elk City, OK. A few of The Twisters made this trip and enjoyed dancing to the ten or so callers who are booked annually for this event. Several Twister couples journeyed to Andover, Kansas on Sunday July 12 th for Fred and Pat Trujillo s along with longtime Kansas dancers Gordon and Irma Schutt s induction into the Kansas Square Dancer s Hall of Fame. This celebration found a large hall completely full of square and round dancers who enjoyed dancing to numerous callers and cuers. Monday evening, July 20, found all the Twisters meeting at The Hall for their business meeting and indoor picnic. Dempsey and Linda Roten furnished the water melons again this year and other members brought additional great picnic goodies as well. After the picnic a short business meeting was held at which time plans were discussed for the upcoming Woods County Fair which is scheduled for Sept. 10,11 and 12. The Alva Car Show will be held on September 19. We hope to sell lots of tickets at both of these events. Twister lessons are scheduled to start on Thursday, September 17. It was reported that several couples had expressed an interest in taking the square dance class. During the meeting officers were voted to stay the same for the upcoming year. The evening was finished by dancing two or three tips. Throughout the summer several Twister members journeyed to Ft. Supply to dance with Don and Bonnie Main and Rod & Lois Ford. Our special dance sponsored by Twisters and Harper County Squares will take place on Sunday afternoon, August 30 at the community building in Kiowa, KS. Fred Trujillo and The Fords will be calling this event which will start at 2:30 p.m. If there is enough support for this dance hopefully others can be sponsored by both clubs whenever there is a fifth Sunday. Our fall dance schedule starts with a Hippy Dance on September 26, The October dance will be on the 24th with Halloween being the theme. Please remember that all Twister evening dances start at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. A Nonymous Alva Twister Reporter
