1 Tiger Times Dupo High School 600 Louisa Avenue Dupo, IL Mr. Day To Save The Day By: Xavier Griffin Volume 6 Issue 3 November 9, 2018 Editors We have a new football coach and Social Studies teacher here at Dupo High School! Mr. Joe Day was hired over the summer. Before he came to Dupo High School he had taught for two years at St. Louis Special School District as a Special Education teacher. He was also a Technology teacher at Clayton High School and taught in the Physical Education Department at St. Alban School. Growing up Mr. Day said he always wanted to be a teacher/coach. He lived in O Fallon, Missouri. He started college at Missouri State and was offered a scholarship to play college football. Mr. Day ended up transferring to Lindenwood University St. Charles, where he majored in Physical Education. When asked what he enjoys most here at Dupo High School, he responded without hesitating, I like dealing and interacting with the kids here every day. Mr. Day is happy to be coaching football here at Dupo, we have come a long way, and so have all the players. He is also hoping to get a wrestling program started here at Dupo High School soon. 2 TIGER TIMES The Extra Mile By: Waylen Keys As cross country comes to an end, many runners are very happy about the way the season turned out. Sarah Vanover, a runner who advanced to sectionals, had a lot to say about it. She said, It s always been up and down, a bit of a roller coaster. Ragsdale and I usually take turns on being the last Dupo runner to cross the finish line. However, something about the Smithton Park course always was a better run for me. She says her most balanced course was the one in Freeburg because it had the right blend between flat and insane hills. Sarah was very excited for sectionals, but also a little nervous because the course had hills. The pressure is on because I have to run like I m in Freeburg on a course like Sparta, she stated. Many people say she did great at sectionals. As for next year, the only thing that will make her year complete is participating in the summer workouts, unlike this previous year. Youngsters By: Reagan Carner 2 This year s girls basketball team is overrun by underclassmen. Seventeen girls tried out for the team: ten freshmen, two seniors, and the rest are sophomores. Senior Cameron Foster says, The biggest concern for our team right now is getting everyone to show up and be consistent with practices so we can be prepared for the games, especially since we re a younger team. The first game for the Lady Tigers is in the Cat Classic, which is a home tournament. It s on November 13, at 7:45 against the Roxana Shells. Job Year 2019 Page 002 ( ) Master ( ) 11/09/ :34 AM
3 TIGER TIMES A Message from Superintendent Dr. Carpenter I am excited to report that the Illinois State Board of Education school report cards were recently released and Bluffview Elementary School, Dupo Junior High School and Dupo High School have been designated Commendable! The new summative designations provide a public benchmark of each school's progress toward the goal of preparing all students for success in college and career. Every public school in the state has been given one of four summative designations: Exemplary, Commendable, Underperforming and Lowest Performing. We are pleased the new evaluations move beyond standardized test performance and include socio-economic issues, student mobility and other community-related factors that play a role in student performance. The emphasis is on growth toward proficiency and how well a school is meeting the needs of the groups it serves. The new state report cards are a more accurate reflection of the quality of teaching and learning in our district. We hold high expectations for all students, and we believe every student can achieve success! Thank you to our Dupo community (staff, families and village partnerships) for your continued partnership to support the success of every student! Respectfully, Dr. Carpenter 3 Job Year 2019 Page 003 ( ) Master ( ) 11/09/ :34 AM
4 TIGER TIMES Hustle and Heart Set Us Apart By: Bryce Lancaster The end of the season has finally approached us. Our girls have given everything they have throughout the year but in the end came up short in the last game of the season. To finish the regular season the Dupo Tigers lost to the Red Bud Musketeers. In Regionals, the Tigers played Alton Marquette. They lost by the score of in the first set and in the second set. Our Lady Tigers have given their all this season and left everything they had on the court. Senior Reagan Carner led the team in digs this year with 304, junior Annalese Gill led the team with 24 blocks, and she also led the team in kills this year with 44. Seniors Kassidee Keys and Cameron Foster led the team in serve percentage with 94.78% and 94.48% respectively. The program will lose five seniors who have given their all over the past four years. These girls have been by my side through everything all the way from freshman year and each year we continued to grow. I m really going to miss these girls and fighting every game with them, senior Cameron Foster stated. The season didn t end up how we were all hoping for, but the underclassmen are definitely getting geared up for next season to show everyone what the Lady Tigers are made of. 4 Here Comes the Boom By: Kaleb Chism It's that time of year again. Tiger basketball is gearing up to take on a big year ahead. Returning senior, shooting guard, Tyler Kyle is ready to take on the challenge as a team leader along with senior Kelvin Swims and junior Malik Calhoun. Senior Andrew McAllister says, I feel this season is going to be a great one with the coaching staff from last year. It was just a taste of what is to come for this season. The whole team is excited for this year and we feel great about our first game. The Tigers will start their season at the Metro East Lutheran Turkey- Tip Off on November 26.
