From OUR PARENTS to OUR PARENTS IMPORTANT INFORMATION from Virginia Guy of the Drug Education Council KRATOM Danger In A Bottle! Kratom is an herbal substance that is being sold in gas stations, convenience stores, and head shops as an energy supplement, an herb that reduces pain, anxiety and depression. The active ingredients are mitragynine and hydroxymitragynine. There are serious dangers that all parents should know: Researchers compare the effects of kratom to opiates (prescription pain killers) and heroin because it attaches to the same receptors in the brain. Kratom is often referred to as synthetic heroin ; however, it is not classified as a Synthetic. Kratom is addictive. Other side effects may include: nervousness, nausea/vomiting (can be severe and prolonged), psychotic episodes, hallucinations and paranoia. The effects of kratom are felt quickly and can last between 5 and 7 hours, although high doses can last longer.

3 Kratom is not detected by typical drug screens, which experts believe make it very attractive to youth who are trying to hide their use from adults. Since the packaging is similar to 5-hour energy drinks, young people may think it is a safe alternative to energy shots. It is not! Please talk to your children and loved ones. For more information, call the Drug Education Council, PARENTING PRAYER GROUP Any parents who are interested in participating are invited to attend an independent monthly Parenting Prayer Group meeting. The meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:00 am on campus. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 2. Each meeting will include a brief devotion, followed by each attendee randomly choosing the name of a participating teacher and his/her students to hold up in prayer each morning during that month. No information, including names, will be disclosed regarding students. Please check in at the front office upon your arrival and to find out the meeting location. NEWS for PARENTS & STUDENTS from TEACHERS The St. Jude Math-a-thon kicked off in our PPS math classes on February 19, with all Matha-thon pledge donations due March 11. Students are raising money for St. Jude Children s Research Hospital while they learn MATH! Over the years, PPS has been a faithful participant in the Math-a-thon, raising $98,000! Children in need of medical care come to St. Jude from all over the United States. It costs $2 million a day to run the hospital, and every penny we raise helps because contributions provide approximately 75 percent of the funds necessary. No child pays for care or other needs that are not covered by insurance, including housing, food, and transportation. Patients receive the best care in the world and never receive a bill. This year we are also taking $1 donations for a shamrock competition between grade levels, AND there will be a PPS Multiplies Miracles out-of-uniform shirt day on March 16, also for a $1 donation. Thank you for helping us support St Jude Children s Research Hospital!

4 YEARBOOK BALANCES ARE PAST DUE! If you owe a yearbook balance of $19.00, please send that to Ms. Fosnight NOW! Students owing a balance should have received a statement in homeroom weeks ago. Balances are PAST DUE. Please make sure that all checks include a driver s license number, a phone number, the child s name and homeroom number. MIDDLE YEARS COUNSELING NEWSLETTER PARENTS of ALL GRADE LEVELS The PPS counselors, Madonna Burden (6 th grade) and Stacey Eiland (7 th & 8 th grades) send out a monthly Middle Years newsletter for parents. It will usually come as second attachment in the with the Pirates Spyglass newsletter and will also be posted on the PPS website ( The purpose of each newsletter is to promote ways for home and school to work together for school success. STUDENTS IN THE NEWS MOBILE S SINGING CHILDREN IN CONCERT Founded in 1977, Mobile s Singing Children (MSC) has been the premier youth chorus on the northern Gulf Coast. Performing choral music of the highest quality drives these children and teens toward excellence in song, spirit, and studies. MSC performs regularly with Mobile Opera and Mobile Symphony Orchestra, and in January was one of only five select middle and high school choirs chosen to perform for hundreds of music educators at the Alabama Music Educators Conference in Montgomery. PPS has often had current students and alums as members of this auditioned community group. This year, 11 of 42 members are PPS Pirates. The project is a chance for students to dig deep into historical content to develop perspective and understanding. Every year National History Day frames students original research within a historical theme. The theme for is Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History. Projects are entered into contests at the school, county, and state levels, where the top student projects have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for the national contest.
