5 SPEAKER LAST WEEK: CHUCK FREITAS ON LITERACY By Ken Lund In the third of our series of programs during Rotary s Vocational Service Month, it was a pleasure to have Chuck Freitas talk with us about an important problem in today s society: ILLITERACY. Chuck is our District Chair for Literacy and has been a Rotarian for over 20 years. He is a Past President of the Claremont Sunrise Rotary club and was a career educator and administrator. There is a significant literacy problem in the West Covina schools, and Vickie Abbott commented on her own observations of it at the high school level. Our speaker discussed various approaches. During this Rotary year, the goal of the District 5300 Literacy Team is to broaden and deepen opportunities for children to read through Everyone Reads! This program targets our schools here at home and schools in Africa. Toward this end, clubs in the District are being encouraged to adopt one or more of the following programs to ensure that Everyone Reads! 1. Rotary Readers: Adopt an elementary school in your neighborhood and purchase library books for your school s library through Scholastic Publications. 2. Promise for African Literacy (PAL): Support the purchase of textbooks for children in identified schools in Africa by changing your speaker thank you gift to a donation in the speaker s name to PAL. Bookplates, with the speaker s name on them, will be placed in textbooks purchased with the donated funds. 3. Literacy for All: Participate in the Rotary International Matching Grants process and raise funds to purchase the Literacy for All K-3 reading program for schools in South Africa. 4. Teen Readers: Work with schools in your area to purchase contemporary novels to put into the hands of teen readers. The Bluford Series books are set in urban America, feature teen characters, and speak to the interests and concerns of today s students. The key to learning is the ability to read. These four programs will give clubs in our District simple, relevant ways to promote literacy and make a difference locally and internationally.

He crosses the street to his pickup truck; five men pull him into a waiting car and speed away. This is the last time Kiki is see alive. One month later his body was discovered in a shallow grave, 70 miles from Michoacan, Mexico. He had been tortured, beaten and brutally murdered. Enrique left behind a wife and three sons. Saturday, October 23, 2010 marked our twenty-second Annual Red Ribbon Rally. The rally began at 7:00 am on the West Covina High School Campus. At least 1,000 people arrived for a free pancake breakfast cooked by Rotarians and served by the WCHS Interact students. PASSING OF CHARTER MEMBER, DR. NORM SNYDER Our community lost a remarkable guy recently with the passing of Norm Snyder on October 10. Norm was one of the charter members of our club in He was a member for a number of years and then bowed out due to the press of other community commitments. He then returned to our club in the '90's, became our club treasurer, and left the club in the early 2000's because of health problems. Norm grew up in Iowa, served in our Navy during WWII, married his wife, Delphia, and became a physician. They then moved to West Covina, set up his practice, and started a family. Norm was very community-minded and was a member of the City Council for several years. He was Mayor of West Covina du ruing He had a long medical career, including his private practice, working in the E.R. at Intercommunity Hospital, and as a staff physician at CIGNA Health Care. Towards the end of his career, he worked closely with Forest Tennant at several pain clinics. Norm was honored by a special presentation during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Rotary Club of West Covina in 2003 at South Hills Country Club. He
12 was a real addition to our community.
