Kiwanis was coined from an American Indian phrase Nunc Kee-wanis, which means, we trade or we share our talents. Kiwanis is one of the few organizations that offers membership to almost all age groups. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it s located. No two Kiwanis clubs look exactly the same. Clubs should reflect their communities and their members and should work to meet their needs. Flexibility is key to a successful club. 7 1. True 2. True 3. False there are Four 4. True 5. Ture it was designated in 1931 by President Herbert PATRIOTIC SONGS THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER On September 13, 1814, lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key was negotiating the release of American prisoners aboard a British ship and ended up being detained. Held through the night, he watched the relentless bombardment of Baltimore by land and sea, and finally, by the dawn s early light on September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key peered through a spyglass and spotted an resilient American flag still waving over Baltimore s Fort McHenry the next morning. Inspired, and in a patriotic fervor, Key penned the words to The Star-Spangled Banner, words that changed our culture forever. Lyrics: Oh, say can you see, by the dawn s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Thro the perilous fight; O er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming. And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say, does that Star - Spangled Banner yet wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave? True of False Questions: 1. The Melody of The Star-Spangled Banner is English not American. 2. The tune is set to an old English drinking tune, To Anacreon in Heav n. 3. There are five stanzas but only the first one is general sung. 4. Francis Scott Key intended his verses to be song lyrics, not poetry. 5. Star Spangled Banner did not become the national anthem until more than a century after it was written. The Star-Spangled Banner was originally entitled Defense of Fort McHenry. When Key scrawled his lyrics on the back of a letter he pulled from his pocket on the morning of September 14, he did not give them any title. Within a week, Key s verses were printed on broadsides and in Baltimore newspapers under the title Defense of Fort McHenry. In November, a Baltimore music store printed the patriotic song with sheet music for the first time under the more lyrical title, The Star-Spangled Banner. The flag Key hailed at the twilight s last gleaming did not fly through the perilous fight. In addition to a thunderstorm of bombs, a torrent of rain fell on Fort McHenry throughout the night of the Battle of Baltimore. The fort s 30-by-42-foot garrison flag was so massive that it required 11 men to hoist when dry, and if waterlogged the woolen banner could have weighed upwards of 500 pounds and snapped the flagpole. So as the rain poured down, a smaller storm flag that measured 17-by-25 feet flew in its place. In the morning they most likely took down the rain-soaked storm flag and hoisted the bigger one, Leepson says, and that s the flag Key saw in the morning. In 1861, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. added a verse. Despite using the words the land of the free, Francis Scott Key had been a slave owner, and members of the Confederate Army wanted to claim his anthem. Holmes, an influential writer from Boston, wrote new lyrics advocating that American slaves be unchained. Holmes addition now appears in most official publications of the lyrics. Patriotism Banner Patch Initiated in by Lt. Governor Rona Lunde Purpose: Increase patriotic spirit of Kiwanis Club Members Ways a Club can display patriotism: To encourage more members to assist with voter registration and poll working. To encourage more members to vote. To help members understand the symbolic relevance of our national symbols and heroes. To educate members about historic facts related to American patriotism, freedom and liberty. To encourage members to think about patriotism for five minutes at each meeting. Ways to Earn Points Validate that three club members have assisted with voter registration. Validate that three club members have worked as precinct poll workers. Validate that 80% of club members eligible to vote, voted in a local, state, or national election. Donate flags or funds to secure new American flags for an entity in town that will fly it. Collect old flags and turn them over to the Boy Scouts for retirement. Assist with toy collection for families whose head of household is serving abroad in the military or lend financial assistance to the project. Write two patriotic articles either of historic fact or recount a club member s personal patriotic moment for the club s newsletter. Sing a patriotic song at every club meeting two verses. Give a mini lesson on patriotism after the singing of a patriotic song. Schedule two club programs focused on some form of patriotism. Sponsor a patriotic art contest for the local schools and display the work in the local library. Assist with Constitution Week activities at your local school district. Participate in My Soldier pen pal program. Lets show our support for our men and women serving in our military forces, it is because of their dedication and sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedoms.

He is always a huge help and partners with Greg Gillam and GUSD schools with the food pick up and distribution, which makes the Holiday food drive a blessing to the people in our community. He is often seen at Kiwaniannes activities because, as he says, I am dragged along. If they need something I have a lot of junk. One thing Jim is NOT is a member of the Christmas Parade Committee however, he still provides tables and chairs - and a truck to haul the Library book worm kids and the Trivia winners! Jim is the President of the Glendora Historical Society and is currently serving his third year in office. He takes great joy in showing people around the Pharm as a docent. Michael Rubel left this historical landmark to the Glendora Historical Society and it is their job to keep it together and bring it up to current standards. There is always something that needs to be fixed. Usually on Earth day, Jim misses the plant sale because he is at the Castle promoting conservation and recycling. No one has more recycling then Rubel Pharms! Jim attends most of the Glendora Community Coordinating Council (GCCC) meetings, representing the Glendora Historical Society and also serves on the GCCC board. But his favorite activity is the boxes for the troops. He gets to cook sometimes and takes the finished boxes to the armed services bases. The service men and women that receive the boxes are very grateful on the behalf of those getting the boxes where ever they are shipped. Thank you Jim for your dedication, time and willingness to serve! ~ Mark McDonald, Executive Director, Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International We Are Rockstars! This Years Motto...
