1 Glendora Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 353, Glendora, CA March 4, 2016 Issue 16 Upcoming EVENTS Serving the Children of the World and Dedicated to Changing the World, One Child and One Community at a Time. Presidents Message By La Shawn Butler BUILD TRUST WITH INTEGRITY AND EXAMPLE The greatest, competitive advantages in life are those that are most difficult to copy. Anyone can put together a group of people and call them a team. Moving equipment or furniture around is easy. Buying more equipment and furniture is even easier. Writing a mission statement? No big deal. Sharing information? In this day and age, we may be sharing too much! And if not, it's an easy fix, certainly not a sustainable competitive advantage. In my line of work, negotiating benefits might get you an agreement with employees, which comes from the head, but it won t inspire true commitment and trust, which comes from the heart. News & Highlights By Kathleen R. Sessman Kiwanis One Day April 2, 2016 For more Information Click Here Earth Day Festival April 16, 2016 So, how do we inspire trust of one another? How do we get them to be honest with one another? Or get team members to treat one another like winners with value, dignity and respect? These are not quick fixes for problems we can solve with a check book. These are challenges the take time, dedication, a total commitment and demonstration from the leadership. Trust is a learned behavior, as is distrust, and it is a direct reflection of the teams leadership. If we do not have trust growing in our club, start by looking in the mirror. Are you modeling trust and integrity? Are you trustworthy? Do you demonstrate fearlessness, trust, and inspiration? Are you covering for your team members when you need be? Are you openly sharing pertinent information, are you honest and candid with your team? Trust is not a matter of technique, but of character. We are trusted because of our way of being, not because of our polished exteriors or are expertly crafted communication. ~ Marsha Sinetar How will the team remember you? copy. 3 Meeting Time/Location The Kiwanis Club of Glendora meets each Thursday at 7:00 a.m. at the Glendora Country Club, 2400 Country Club Drive, Glendora, CA Fun Facts The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, In 1962, worldwide expansion was approved, and today Kiwanis clubs are active in every part of the world. Kiwanis was coined from an American Indian phrase Nunc Kee-wanis, which means, we trade or we share our talents. Kiwanis is one of the few organizations that offers membership to almost all age groups. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it s located. No two Kiwanis clubs look exactly the same. Clubs should reflect their communities and their members and should work to meet their needs. Flexibility is key to a successful club. 6 Page 7 Patriotism Banner Patch Initiated in by Lt. Governor Rona Lunde Purpose: Increase patriotic spirit of Kiwanis Club Members U.S. PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN Born: Died: Presidency: February 12, 1809, Hodgenville, Kentucky April 15, 1865 (age 56) Petersen House Washington, D.C. 16th President of United States March April 15, 1865 Resting Place: Lincoln Tomb, Oak Ridge Cemetery Springfield, Illinois Spouse: Mary Todd (m ) Abraham Lincoln was one of the most famous writers/ orators in American history, known for pithy and insightful sayings like... Lincoln is enshrined in the Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Great Emancipator was an accomplished wrestler as a young man. Defeated only once in approximately 300 matches and reportedly talked a little smack in the ring. Lincoln s grappling exploits earned him an Outstanding American honor in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Lincoln created the Secret Service hours before his assassination. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln signed legislation creating the U.S. Secret Service. That evening, he was shot at Ford s Theatre. Even if the Secret Service had been established earlier, it wouldn t have saved Lincoln: The original mission of the law enforcement agency was to combat widespread currency counterfeiting. It was not until 1901, after the killing of two other presidents, that the Secret Service was formally assigned to protect the commander-in-chief. Lincoln was a hands-on commander-in-chief who, given his passion for gadgetry, was keenly interested in the artillery used by his Union troops during the Civil War; known to have personally test-fired rifles and met with inventors demonstrating military prototypes at the White House, and attended artillery and cannon tests. Lincoln didn t move to Illinois until he was 21. Illinois may be known as the Land of Lincoln, but it was in Indiana that the 16th president spent his formative years. Lincoln was born in a Kentucky log cabin in 1809, and in 1816 his father, Thomas, moved the family across the Ohio River to a 160-acre plot in southern Indiana. Lincoln did not migrate to Illinois until Lincoln never slept in the Lincoln Bedroom. When he occupied the White House, the 16th president used the current Lincoln Bedroom as his personal office. It was there that he met with Cabinet members and signed documents, including the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln was the only president to have a patent: Lincoln invented a device to free steamboats that ran aground, patent No. 6,469 in Lincoln practiced law without a degree. And had about 18 months of formal schooling. Lincoln wanted women to have the vote in The future president was a suffragette before it became fashionable. Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a National Holiday. Any nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure. I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends. A house divided against itself cannot stand" Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. Abraham Lincoln was as the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in Whatever you are, be a good one. April Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him. abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one? modernized the economy. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. I walk slowly, but I never walk backward. Ways a Club can display patriotism: To encourage more members to assist with voter registration and poll working. To encourage more members to vote. To help members understand the symbolic relevance of our national symbols and heroes. To educate members about historic facts related to American patriotism, freedom and liberty. To encourage members to think about patriotism for five minutes at each meeting. Ways to Earn Points Validate that three club members have assisted with voter registration. Validate that three club members have worked as precinct poll workers. Validate that 80% of club members eligible to vote, voted in a local, state, or national election. Donate flags or funds to secure new American flags for an entity in town that will fly it. Collect old flags and turn them over to the Boy Scouts for retirement. Assist with toy collection for families whose head of household is serving abroad in the military or lend financial assistance to the project. Write two patriotic articles either of historic fact or recount a club member s personal patriotic moment for the club s newsletter. Sing a patriotic song at every club meeting two verses. Give a mini lesson on patriotism after the singing of a patriotic song. Schedule two club programs focused on some form of patriotism. Sponsor a patriotic art contest for the local schools and display the work in the local library. Assist with Constitution Week activities at your local school district. Participate in My Soldier pen pal program. Lets show our support for our men and women serving in our military forces, it is because of their dedication and sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedoms.
