The President s Message PLa Breaking NEWS Kiwanis One Day April 2, 2016 Easy to do. Easy not to do. Choose the latter, no one may notice. Choose the former and lives may change! -Julian Bowers Brown Ways to Practice Random Acts of Kindness: Listen. Don t interrupt or underestimate how important and comforting it is to be listened to. Find opportunities to give compliments or speak kind words. It costs nothing, takes no time, and could make someone s entire day. Don t just think it. Say it. When you see something good, share it. When people are gossiping about someone, be the person to chime in with something nice. Encourage someone to pursue their dreams. And help them achieve their goals. Say, Yes to someone. When you feel down, go be a blessing to someone else. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Pat instituted Job Talks when he was president and, with the help of Dave Culp, that program has morphed into the Member Meeting Members Program where he interviews one Kiwanis member on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The program went away for a short period of time but then, at the request of members, made its comeback 7 years ago and has been running strong ever since. This program is fantastic because it allows all members the opportunity to get to know each other better. Chances are that you ve been on the hot seat with Pat at least once! Some of you possible more than once! If you haven't and you are interested in being interviewed let Pat know he is always looking for interested members and unique experiences to share with the Club. Pat can always be counted on to work numerous events, including Flashback where you can always find him at the gate on Bennett or Casino Night where he serves as one of the events bartenders. In addition to all that Pat also heads the Citizen of the Year committee for Glendora and hosts the event on the evening of the Citizen of the Year banquet. Thanks Pat for all that you do!
4 Meeting Time/Location The Kiwanis Club of Glendora meets each Thursday at 7:00 a.m. at the Glendora Country Club, 2400 Country Club Drive, Glendora, CA Fun Facts The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, In 1962, worldwide expansion was approved, and today Kiwanis clubs are active in every part of the world. Kiwanis was coined from an American Indian phrase Nunc Kee-wanis, which means, we trade or we share our talents. Kiwanis is one of the few organizations that offers membership to almost all age groups. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it s located. No two Kiwanis clubs look exactly the same. Clubs should reflect their communities and their members and should work to meet their needs. 6 Page 6 Patriotism Banner Patch Initiated in by Lt. Governor Rona Lunde Purpose: Increase patriotic spirit of Kiwanis Club Members PRESIDENTS DAY Presidents Day has its roots in one of the oldest American holiday observances: George Washington's Birthday. In 1796, the final year of George Washington's administration, Americans chose to honor their beloved president by celebrating his birthday in all thirteen states, however the same day wasn t marked as it depended on the calendar used. By the early 1800s, Washington's Birthday had become a common observance, but an official date had not been adopted. Some observed February 11, others February 22 to honor America's Founding Father. In 1879,Congress declared Washington's Birthday a federal holiday. The legislation that made Washington's Birthday a national holiday also stipulated that it was to be observed on February 22, the anniversary of his birth according to the calendar now in use. Washington's Birthday continued to be observed on February 22 throughout much of the 20th century. Then, in 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holiday Act. This act moved certain federal holidays from fixed dates to the Monday following those dates in order to create more three-day weekends. Under the Monday Holiday Act, the official observance of Washington's Birthday was moved to the third Monday of February. The change began with the 1971 calendar and continues to this day. So how did Washington's Birthday come to be known as Presidents Day? Fun Fact: Washington shared the month of February with another notable U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln. Following Lincoln's 1865 assassination, many chose to observe Lincoln's birthday, February 12th, as well as Washington's. In the years to come, a number of states made Lincoln's birthday a state holiday, but unlike Washington's birthday, Lincoln's birthday never became a federal holiday. Urban legend claims that at the time the observance of Washington's Birthday was moved to the third Monday of February, President Richard Nixon hoped to consolidate observances of both Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays into a single federal holiday. According to legend, Nixon issued a presidential proclamation dubbing the third Monday of February "Presidents Day" in honor of all U.S. Presidents. In fact, Nixon issued an executive order on February 11, 1971, proclaiming the third Monday of February a holiday but referred to the holiday as nothing other than Washington's Birthday. Claims that Nixon had changed the holiday to the more generic Presidents Day apparently stemmed from an inaccurate newspaper account. Nonetheless, in the final decades of the 20th century, an increasing number of people embraced the term "Presidents Day." Some states have even adopted Presidents Day as a state holiday in lieu of Washington's Birthday. Still, the federal holiday on the third Monday of February legally remains "Washington's Birthday" to this day. President's Day never falls on the actual birthday of any American president. Washington's Teeth Weren't Wooden. contrary to popular belief, the country's first president had dentures made of gold, ivory, lead, and animal teeth. Thomas Jefferson Founded The University Of Virginia in 1819 on land that once belonged to eventual President James Monroe. Jefferson is the only president to have ever founded an institution of higher learning. The Capital of Liberia, Monrovia was named after James Monroe, because of his prominent support for the colonization of Liberia. John Tyler Was An Awesome Violinist, who often played violin at parties to entertain guests at the White House. Zachary Taylor had a really cool nickname, "Old Rough And Ready", which he acquired from admiring soldiers while he was fighting in the Seminole War. Franklin Pierce didn't swear his oath of office, instead he affirmed it, placing his hand on a law book rather than the Bible. James Buchanan was the only president to never marry, instead remaining a bachelor his entire life. Abe Lincoln was a great wrestler when he moved to New Salem, Illinois in 1831, he ran into a local bully named Jack Armstrong who challenged Lincoln to a wrestling match outside of Denton Offutt's store, where Lincoln was a clerk, and townspeople gathered to watch and wager on it. Lincoln won. Ulysses S. Grant was given a $20 speeding ticket for riding his horse too fast down a Washington street. William Taft swore in later Presidents. He became the only ex-president to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, effectively becoming the only person to serve as the head of two branches of government. In doing so, he swore in both Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover to the presidency. Warren Harding really liked to gamble, although it seems he wasn't very good at it. In one poker game, he bet the White House china collection and lost it all in one hand. Ways a Club can display patriotism: To encourage more members to assist with voter registration and poll working. To encourage more members to vote. To help members understand the symbolic relevance of our national symbols and heroes. To educate members about historic facts related to American patriotism, freedom and liberty. To encourage members to think about patriotism for five minutes at each meeting. Ways to Earn Points Validate that three club members have assisted with voter registration. Validate that three club members have worked as precinct poll workers. Validate that 80% of club members eligible to vote, voted in a local, state, or national election. Donate flags or funds to secure new American flags for an entity in town that will fly it. Collect old flags and turn them over to the Boy Scouts for retirement. Assist with toy collection for families whose head of household is serving abroad in the military or lend financial assistance to the project. Write two patriotic articles either of historic fact or recount a club member s personal patriotic moment for the club s newsletter. Sing a patriotic song at every club meeting two verses. Give a mini lesson on patriotism after the singing of a patriotic song. Schedule two club programs focused on some form of patriotism. Sponsor a patriotic art contest for the local schools and display the work in the local library. Assist with Constitution Week activities at your local school district. Participate in My Soldier pen pal program. Lets show our support for our men and women serving in our military forces, it is because of their dedication and sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedoms.

The peer education workshop series is an independent service project that consists of one to six workshops depending on the availability and preference of the students aimed at developing the capacity of high school students to comfortably and knowledgeably discuss health topics that are difficult but important and relevant to adolescents. The workshops cover the following topics: Mental Health Substance Use Body Image Healthy Relationships Consent and Sexual Assault Gender and Sexual Orientation This program is for high school students who care about the above issues, who are interested in training as health advocates, and who wish to explore a key aspect of health professions: patient education. In addition, the program is structured like a college seminar, so it is a great opportunity for high school students to practice participating in discussions at the undergraduate level.
