1 June 30th, 2017 NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL Robyn Brooks Responsibility Acceptance Respect Honesty Cooper- Responsibility ation Acceptance Resilience Respect Honesty Cooperation Resilience January 30th, 2015 Issue 20, Week 11, Term 2 Staffing We would like to thank Mrs Libby Kennedy for the outstanding job that she has done with the Dance program over the past six months. The students have loved their lessons and the performance that they participated in at the end of each term. Mrs Aleisha Milne will be coordinating the concert during Term 3. She will be teaching for four days to undertake this task. The concert will take place in the last week of Term 3. Miss Hannah Wall will take Mrs Milne s role in 3C on Friday. Mini Disney Concert What a wonderful performance by the students in Prep-2 dancing to a variety of well loved Disney songs. Thanks to Mrs Kennedy for her choreography and rehearsal of the students. Judging by the smiles on their faces they thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Photos can be found later in the newsletter. Principal s Conference On Monday June 26 th and Tuesday June 27 th Ben Milsom and I attended the North Western Region Principal s conference at the convention centre in Melbourne. This was an extremely worthwhile event and we were privileged to hear many international educational researchers speak about education reform at a system level and at a school level. Learning Conferences In Week 3 next term, we will be holding Learning Conferences (Monday 31st July, Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd August). These provide parents, students and teachers with the chance to come together and share and celebrate the learning that has been happening at school. As parents you may have questions about what you have read in your child s report which you can ask at this time. Students will be eager to show off work that they have completed this year. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get together and celebrate the first six months of 2017! A crèche will operate in the Library from 3:30pm. We would appreciate if siblings were not present at the conferences. This allows you to focus on your child and their conference. Prep 2018 Enrolments If you have a child who will be starting Prep in 2018 we are now accepting enrolments. Enrolment packs are available at the office. We would appreciate enrolment forms in by August 4th. Disco Thanks to Maddy, Abby and Clare for their coordination of the Disco on Friday night. The students in Grades 3-6 had a wonderful evening of dancing and activities. The Disco raised $400. Great effort by everyone involved. RI There will be no Religious Instruction on Monday 17th July. RI will recommence in Term 3 on Monday 24th July. Curriculum Day Our next Curriculum day will be held on Wednesday August 23rd. No students will be required at school on this day. Athletic Sports Our Athletics Sports are fast approaching. This year due to the increased numbers at our school we will be moving the event to the athletics track at the Aerodrome ovals. The athletics day will be held on Tuesday 25 th July. Students will need to wear appropriate sports clothing and HOUSE colours for the day. Parents will need to organise to drop their children off to the athletics track at the Aerodrome ovals and sign them in with their classroom teachers by 8.50am. There will be no staff on site at school on this day. NO busses will be available to transport students from the school. Students can then be collected and signed out at 3.15pm from the ovals. The day will start with the opening welcome and reading of the oaths at 9.00am. The students will then break into their year level groups and commence their events by 9.15am. Year level and monster relays will round up the day s events starting Office: Postal Address: P.O. 2 (Continued from page 1) at 2.15pm followed by the closing assembly. There will be no facilities to buy lunch at the Aero Ovals. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink bottle. NO ipads are to be taken to the Aths Sports day. A full timetable for the day will be in the Term 3 Week 1 newsletter. We would love to see as many parents as possible supporting their children on the day. PE and Sport practice All students have been practising the various athletics events during P.E. classes and classroom sport over the past three weeks. As we will be practising these sports a lot more over the next couple of weeks, it would helpful if the children could wear suitable clothing and footwear every day. School Council The next meeting of the School Council will be on Wednesday 26th July at 6:00pm in the staffroom. Congratulations Cooper Topp (4R) and Hope Retallick (4R) were presented with their Grey Wolf Award earlier this week. The Grey Wolf Award is an individual award and takes 12 months to complete. It takes a lot of dedication to the Cub pack and commitment to complete all requirements. Thanks to Mr Russel and Mrs Branson who helped with their award and for attending the presentation. Uniform The weather is definitely chillier! Please ensure that your child arrives at school in correct uniform. No bright coloured long sleeve tops under the polo top. Also make sure that all jumpers are named so that if they are left lying around they can be easily returned. New Kitchen We are looking for interested people to form a committee to help plan and design the new kitchen area. If you are interested could you please Mrs Rowland. rowland.susan.j@edumail.vic.gov.au Cooking This week the students have been cooking with fresh produce from the school gardens. The Preps made vegie fritters using broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, bok choy and spring onions. The Enviro leaders used the produce to make muffins and beetroot dip. The teachers were very happy with their efforts as they sampled them for morning tea! The recipe for the fritters is here so that you can cook them over the holidays! Ingredients 1/2 cup flour 2 eggs 1/4 cup milk Veggie Fritters 1/2 cup grated cheese 1/2 cup chopped veggies (grated carrot and zucchini, silverbeet, corn, peas - pretty much whatever is in the fridge) salt and pepper butter or oil for cooking Method 1. Add flour, eggs and milk into a bowl. Whisk together until it is a thick, smooth batter (add a little more milk if necessary). 2. Add cheese, veggies and salt and pepper to mixture. Mix well. 3. Heat oil or butter in mid-heat frypan. Drop tablespoon-lots of fritter mix into pan. 4. Flip over fritters when bubbles appear on top and bottom is golden. 4 CONCERT 2017 This year the concert will be made up of 2 smaller plays because our school has grown in size and this is the best way to showcase our students. Playtime Three sisters find that life doesn t have to revolve around what s on TV. To their horror, Mum sends them outside to play, and they discover there is a world of fun to be had playing with their friends. The Book Worm A Book Worm steals a book, and the children follow the Worm into a magical library. Here they enlist the help of some famous story book characters, and have some exciting adventures, before retrieving their book. Concert will be held at the Arts Centre on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 18th, 19th, 20th September. Rehearsals will commence at the start of Term 3 and run for the entire term till the performances. 5 PLASTIC BAGS 4V have been learning about the effects plastic bags are having on our community. So, how can such a flimsy little thing be causing such a problem? Not only are they effecting the animals that eat and get tangled in them, but they are wasting our precious resources that are used to make them, not to mention the pollution caused when actually making the plastic bags. We want to encourage people to limit their use of plastic bags by using reusable shopping bags. We also want people to recycle the plastic bags they have at drop zones at local supermarkets. Did you know- Queensland will ban plastic bags in 2018, which means Victoria will be one of the only states in Australia that has not banned plastic bags. Why are we so behind? The average person uses around 416 plastic bags every year! Do you need to use that many? Plastic bags take between 20 to 1000 years to break down. They then get broken into micro plastics, which are tiny pieces of plastic that animals and sea life swallow. Sea creatures such as turtles eat plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. When plastic bags enter the soil, they slowly release toxic chemicals. Even though we don t live near the ocean, our plastic bags can end up there through our drains and river system. What anplastic averagebags personare usesused in a year 160,000 every second. What a waste! 5 trillion plastic bags are produced every year. 12 million barrels of oil are used to make plastic bags every year. This is a resource we are running out of, so why are we wasting it on bags? Below are links to petitions you can sign to help Victoria join the fight against plastic bags petitions/ban-the-bag-victoria This is how many plastic bags one person uses in a year! What a lot of plastic bags!! Irymple South Primary School Newsletter - Issue 20, Week 11, Term 2,
6 3/4 RUGBY 9s On Tuesday grade 3 and 4 students were treated to a Rugby 9s Carnival at the Aerodrome Ovals. The day was a run brilliantly with a clinic of skills before a series of games. All games were umpired by Rugby development officers, with coaching offered along the way. Sportsmanship awards were awarded to Elana Howard, Christian Zagar, Archie Thompson and Meg Knight. Our team competed against St Pauls, Wentworth, Sacred Heart and Merbein. Unfortunately my team didn t win any games but we did have lots of fun. Our best players were Archie Thompson and William Lay who both scored a try. I think you should definitely have a go of it! Dustin Madden We had an excellent time at Rugby 9s, although we only won one game against the other Irymple South team. We all tried our best and had so much fun along the way. We have learnt a lot about Rugby now. Rory Ryder- Ford and Rueban Shirnack both scored a try which we were excited about. I hope I get to go next year. Riley Douglas I played in girls team 1, throughout the day we came a draw, lost 2 games but made it into the finals. It was a close game, and we had to play time on after the game was over as it was a draw. Unfortunately we lost the final to Sacred Heart. We tried our best all day and encouraged each other. We had many try scorers, Emma Norris, Kiara Bruton, Rhiannon Jack and Claire Jackson all scored 1 try. Aleisha Burrows scored 2, and amazingly Elana Howard scored 6 tries. We were happy to make finals and even came home with a runners-up trophy. Lottie Adams I played in girls team 2, we worked well as a team all day. Some of the best players were Shelby Winzler and Meg Knight. Meg scored a massive 5 tries and Shelby and I scored 1 try each. We improved in every game and had many laughs. It was very cold day so we had to run even faster to warm up. I loved it! Emma Snell Rugby League Tag - Girls 5/6 RUGBY On Monday, some grade 5/6 girls when to the Aerodrome Ovals to play rugby league tag. We played 5 games, one of then was a draw and we lost the rest. We played against Sacred Heart, Nichols Point, Mildura South and Ranfurly. Everyone played at their best, our only try scorer was Caitlin D'Amico. We all had a fun day and thanks to Penni for coaching us and for all the girls that played on our team. Rugby Tackle Boys On Monday, the boys 5/6 rugby team went to the Aero Ovals to play. We won our 3 pool games comfortably only giving up one try to the opposition. We then played in the semifinal against Mildura Primary and the score was 8 all at the end of the game. We went to extra time and lost in the second period of extra time. We then played off for 3 rd and 4 th against Mildura South and had a good win to finish the day. Our best try scores were Sosaia who scored 8 and Dusty who scored 6 for the day. Our best players were Sosaia, Dusty, Harry B and Cooper M.
