1 Walk Talk! American Cancer Society Relay News T-Shirt Deadline: May 19th MAY 2011 T-Shirt deadline is extremely important to make things go smoothly for Relay. The chairs have a lot of organizing to do so that every team and every team member gets to wear their team names in pride on Relay Day. The order has to get to the printers in time for them to complete ALL the shirts for delivery to us in time to be distributed. So do your part and get those T-Shirt forms in no later then the May 19th meeting. If you need the order form you can still down load it from our Relay website Relay Day Volunteers One of the many things that make our Relay successful is the volunteers on Relay Day. We are always looking for team members to assist with activities of the day. Think about some of your favorite things about Relay and volunteer to help out in that area for an hour or two. The more people that volunteer the less amount of hours needed for each person to contribute. You may have a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor that did not join your team but would like to contribute in some way. Ask them if they would like to join us on Realy Day by helping to set things up in the morning, sitting at a booth for a couple of hours or taking things down on Sunday morning. There are so many ways to contribute to the fight against cancer. For them it could start here. If you do not expect to be at a meeting before Relay Day to sign up as a Relay Day volunteer you can send an or call one of our event chairs to let them know you are interested. 2 Relay Blitz Bake Sales! April 23, 2011 The American Angels Relay Blitz Bake Sale at the Better Val-U Supermarket on Rt. 12 is Lisbon went on even with the damp heavy rain. Team members each donated baked goods for the sale. The table was stacked full of cookies, candies, birds nests, breads and seven layer bars. There were several cakes sold whole and by the slice as well as a few Easter Bunny shaped cakes. With plenty of Easter egg shaped cupcakes decorated just for the occasion customers of the Better Val-U Supermarket were generous with their donations to the members of the American Angels for the Relay For Life of Eastern CT. even though it only lasted 3 hours. Team Freedom pulled it off for the 3 rd time this year! Bake Sales have become a huge part of their fight against cancer. For several years now they have been holding a bake sale on Columbus Day weekend, Valentines Day weekend and Good Friday/Easter weekend at a family owned restaurant, Shady Acres Restaurant. Joyce, says they have sorta built themselves a cliental that now expects them to be there with the baked goods year after year. She also thinks the fact that the members of her family are true bakers and can t find enough occasions to bake. It is in their hearts. I guess I should mention that they made over $800. That s baking for a cure! The Smiling Eagles added a little zing to their Bake Sale. Not only did their team members head to the kitchen to bake up some goodies they cleaned out the closets, garages and attics to host a Yard Sale as well. Of course Mother Nature wasn t in the fundraising mood and chose not to play so nice. This did not stop the fight against cancer for the Smiling Eagles, they did the best they could on the 23 rd of April and then gathered again the following weekend to bring there fight against cancer fundraising to over $500. Dedication to a cure! Stay Healthy ACS programs to help you stay well Fitting in Fitness Simple steps add up Did you know you benefit from even small amounts of moderate activity throughout the day? Regular physical activity is easier to fit in than you may realize and can significantly lower your lifetime risk for cancer --and heart disease and diabetes, too. You ll find the American Cancer Society s physical activity guidelines for adults and children below. These recommendations are based on the latest scientific information to help reduce the risk of developing cancer. Read on for ways to fit in fitness that may surprise you, then learn how many calories are burned in common activities and exercises. ACS Physical Activity Guidelines Adults: Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, above usual activities, on 5 or more days of the week; 45 to 60 minutes of intentional physical activity are preferable. Children and adolescents: Engage in at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 5 days per week. Moderate Activity is anything that makes you breath as hard as you do during a brisk walk. During moderate activities, you ll notice a slight increase in heart rate and breathing, but you may not break a sweat. Vigorous Activities generally engage large muscle groups and cause a noticeable increase in heart rate, breathing depth and frequency, and sweating. Other beneficial activities include those that improve strength and flexibility such as weight lifting, stretching, or yoga. Active substitutions Looking for more ways to work in activity during your day? Think about how much time you spend sitting rather than being active. Then consider these simple substitutions that can help you get moving. Use stairs rather than an elevator. Walk or bike to your destination. Exercise at lunch with your workmates, family, or friends. Take a 10-minute exercise break at work to stretch or take a quick walk. Walk to visit co-workers instead of sending an . Go dancing with your spouse or friends. Plan active vacations rather than only driving trips. Wear a pedometer every day and watch your daily steps increase. Join a sports team. Use a stationary bicycle or treadmill while watching TV. No matter what kind of activity you choose, the important thing is to get moving. Try to fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise on 5 or more days of the week, and look for other opportunities to be active throughout the day. 3 Fundraising Ideas In your home: Hold a House Party in your own home. Have your team members invite family and friends to your party. Provide snacks/food some music and lots of fun games or contests and raffles. Charge small dollar amounts for the games and raffles and be sure to let everyone know the proceeds will go to Relay For Life. Ask each team member to donate a snack/food and one raffle item. This will make it a cost-free event and more money that will go to Relay For Life. At work: Luncheons are great but how about mixing things up a little and serving Ice Cream instead at your place of work. Provide a few different flavors of ice cream and lots of topping options. If each team member donates one item you could put some competition to the local Ice Cream Parlors. Don t forget to make flyers to inform everyone where the money from their sure to be favorite lunch will go to. In your community: Karaoke Against Cancer! Organize your stage-loving friends and community for a karaoke outing at a friendly bar or even in your home or backyard. Charge a dollar for every song that is sung and then let the other guests be the judge of their favorite by placing dollars in the jar of their favorite singer of the night. The jar with the most money in it wins! Posting flyers around town, letters to the newspaper and/or radio stations as well as on face book will help to spread the word and draw a crowd. 3 Quick Fundraising Tips 1. When advertising your event use the word Fundraiser freely. It grabs folks attention quicker. 2. When listing the cost of your fundraiser refer to the price as a donation, example: $5 Donation per Picture or Soup $2 Donation Per Bowl or Tickets: $10 This attracts folks knowing their money is being spent with a purpose. 3. Always post Relay For Life flyers at your events. This is a multipurpose task. It lets folks know you are raising money for an official cause. It promotes our date, time, location, etc. As well as gives us an opportunity to recruit new members. Flyers are available on the disc each team captain received or you can get them at meetings. Combine macaroni in glass bowl with remaining ingredients. Mix together thoroughly, chill in refrigerator at least 4 hours. Italian Dressing (use in place of bottled): 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup white vinegar parsley crushed garlic Italian seasonings salt and pepper 4 c. 5 Stories of Hope ACS Scholars Five college students share their thoughts and dreams. They re among some 1,200 childhood cancer survivors with scholarships from the American Cancer Society. Amanda Peterson, 18 North Dakota State University I m planning to study construction engineering.... I had taken a construction class in high school. The second year we built a house. It was really neat to see it go up. I enjoyed at the end of the day being able to say I helped build the house. Peterson, pictured above, developed an endosinus tumor when she was 18 months old, lost her baby hair during treatment, and has been in remission for 16 years. She will be one of 13 women in the construction engineering program, along with 279 men. Chris Burris, 21 University of Tennessee, Knoxville Chris Burris begins his second year on scholarship from ACS. He s studying agricultural engineering and grew up tinkering with equipment on his family s farm. Within days of being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, Chris flew to Houston to enter a clinical trial of the drug Gleevec. He credits ACS for funding research on Gleevec, the drug that has helped save his life. Cancer hasn t changed his plans for the future, but it has changed his perspective on life. Don t take life for granted you don t know when it s going to change, and, never, never give up. Chrissy Morgan, 18 University of Florida People told me if there s a cancer to get, this (Hodgkin s) is the best one. I know I was lucky. In the room where I went for chemotherapy, you could see on people s faces that they d lost hope. ~ In the last year, medical school seemed like more of a possibility. Maybe I survived this so I could do something about cancer in the future. Christina Morgan was diagnosed with Hodgkin s Disease as she began her senior year of high school. While in treatment she did her class work at home, including assignments in four advanced placement (AP) classes and she continued her commitment to the school band as a drum major. Christina attends the University of Florida s Honor College program and after her undergraduate degree she wants to train for a career in medicine, which she believes is a meaningful way to spend a lifetime. Rebecca Hoh, 20 Northern Kentucky University Every animal trainer needs a good background in psychology, according to college junior and cancer survivor Rebecca Hoh so that s what she s studying with help from an ACS scholarship. She hopes to work with whales and dolphins after finishing college. A rare eye cancer called retinoblastoma destroyed the vision in Rebecca s right eye when she was only four months old, too young to remember the trauma. But she says nonetheless, cancer has made me look at life differently. I don t have to see with my eyes to have a holistic perspective on the world. Lindsay Floto, 18 Polk Community College, Winter Haven, FL I plan to study business. My dad has a restaurant, Country Chicken and Fish, and I like the whole be your own boss thing. I also want to sing professionally, but if I don t, then I ll have a restaurant business. Singing is something I ve wanted to do since I could talk. On medical expenses: I told (my parents) I m gonna pay them back when I become a famous singer. I would buy my dad a Rolex and get my mom a new Volvo. They said not to worry: it s part of a parent s job. In January 2000, doctors found a tumor on the brain stem was the cause of Floto s recurring headaches. Radiation shrunk and froze the tumor, and Floto went on to finish high school with a 3.7 GPA and was voted most likely to succeed. Walk Talk May American Cancer Society Relay News - Page 5
