1 The Colonial Crier newsletter of Colonial Shag Club, Inc a member of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) October 2015 Hampton, Newport News, York County, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Virginia Founded In 2001 a note from the club President Fall is officially here, and there are a lot of dances and parties to go to. With SOS just concluding, the final quarter of 2015 will be very busy for the Colonial Shag Club. October 10 th -- at the General Membership Meeting, we will have the presentation of nominees for the 2016 Board of Directors. I encourage everyone to attend this important meeting. October 31 st at the Saturday night social, we will celebrate Halloween and raise money for Menchville House. Halloween costumes are optional. November 14 th at the Saturday night social, we will have our 4 th Quarter General Membership Meeting and elect the Board of Directors for next year. November 28 th we should all come out to the Saturday night social and attempt to dance off all the Thanksgiving meals and leftovers. Isn t shag dancing one of the more pleasant ways to burn off those extra calories. December 19 th our 12 th annual Christmas Party. It seems to me that every year the party is just a little better than the previous year. I think this year will be no exception. The Christmas Party Committee, co-chaired by Carolyn Freeman, Lana Nichols, and Camille Walthall, is working very hard to make the 2015 Christmas Party the best yet. I applaud the Board of Directors for showing appreciation to our members for supporting the club this year by reducing the ticket prices for Regular Members to $30 and holding that price through December 5 th. The entire Colonial Shag Club was proud to help Carmen Rowell s family celebrate Carmen s 90 th Birthday on September 5 th. If you were unable to attend the party, you missed a great time. First, with the help of twenty eight of Carmen s family and friends, we had approximately 155 attendees, which was the largest attendance ever at Two Left Feet. Carmen s son, Gene, entertained everyone by singing You Make Me Feel So Young to Carmen. I m certain Frank Sinatra would have been proud of Gene s version of one of his all-time great hits. On a sad note. We extend our deepest sympathy to Kitty Wineken for the loss of her husband and best friend, Ronnie Wineken on September 15 th. Kitty and Ronnie both shared a love for dancing and were members of the Colonial Shag Club and the Virginia Beach Shag Club. They both loved to travel and, for the short time they were married, were able to visit a lot of places in their motor home. And now for my annual Deejay promotion statement. The Colonial Shag Club is a very unique shag club when it comes to our deejays. I attended the fall ACSC meeting, held on the last Saturday of SOS, and spoke with several of our sister clubs about their deejay situation. Some of the clubs have only one deejay, some have two, and some have rotating guest deejays. Our club is unique in that we have five regular deejays and several excellent substitute deejays. Most clubs in the ACSC have to pay their deejays a fee for each dance event. All five of our regular deejays are members of the very prestigious Association of Beach and Shag Club Deejays (ABSCDJ) organization. To give you a little background on our club s deejays, Larry Black started deejaying for our club back in year 2000, when the charter members first started taking dance lessons. Larry soon advanced to become the club s first deejay, which allowed him to qualify to become an ABSCDJ member. Larry also deejayed for other clubs and private functions and is the senior member of our deejay group. When it became apparent that our club would need other members to step up and deejay for our dances at Tribeca, Jerry Hardy, Greg Howell, and David Miller along with others began to deejay at our weekly dances. Cindy Black became a deejay by playing music while teaching shag lessons, attending shag events, and helping Larry when he was playing at various venues. What I m trying to tell you is that the Colonial Shag Club provided on-the-job opportunities for our regular, and some of our substitute deejays, to become very well qualified deejays. It has been the Colonial Shag Club s practice to be an allvolunteer club, and therefore we ask our deejays to play as volunteers. When you consider the equipment expense and time devoted to our club dances, I feel we should all support our deejays when the tip jar is passed around. You may or may not like the music played at a particular event, but the event would not even exist without music, and our deejays try very hard to play a wide variety of music in hopes of pleasing the majority of dancers. So when you see the tip jar being passed around, please consider supporting our deejays, and remember what the dance would be like if we didn t have music. Harry

4 The Colonial Crier October 2015 page 4 The November 2014 newsletter jubilantly chimed the wedding bell for Ronnie and Kitty Wineken, who wed on October 5th last year. Now, the bell tolls for Ronnie who passed away on September 15 th. As posted on the Colonial Shag Club Facebook page on September 15, The Colonial Shag Club is very sad to share that Ronnie Wineken passed away unexpectedly this morning. Our hearts go out to our dear Kitty. May you feel embraced in the love of all who know and love you. The story is on the wall Jubilant articles are typically easy to write. But when we lose a member of our shag club family, thoughts of writing are coated with procrastination until a theme presents itself. This theme presented itself in the musical notes artistically painted on the walls of our Saturday night haven. There are many stories to be told by those notes. The stories, like the notes, have highs and lows on the staff of life. At each Saturday night social, like the notes flowing on studio walls through peaks and valleys, announcements run the gamut from evoking jubilation, drawing out concern for those who are ill, and, in the case of the September 19 th social, sharing the foreboding news that Ronnie will be with us no more in body to dance. And after such announcements each week, we take our thoughts to the dance floor and cherish the fact that we can dance. And we strive to maintain the uplifting spirals on the wall as the prevailing theme. As we listen to announcements at each social, we wonder, where will we be next week. Those of us who can return to the social do so with things that happened throughout the week that have changed us. And we share that with others so as to again get synchronized on the rock-step. The Saturday night socials could be considered milestones on the highway of life. We are never guaranteed that there is another milestone ahead. Each Saturday night social is not just another Saturday night social. Any dance could be forever more one s last dance so make it good.
5 The Colonial Crier October 2015 page 5 Thank you to all our friends at Colonial Shag Club for all your cards and words of encouragement during my Father s illness and death. Our club truly is like an extended family in the way we support each other in the good times and the bad. Peggy & Mel Hemphill General membership meeting will be held October 10 th at the club s Saturday night social. As part of the meeting, the nominations committee will announce the nominees for the 2016 Board of Directors and then will take nominations from the floor.
