Newsletter July 2014 Dear Parents and Carers Well the end of term is almost upon us and I hope everyone is looking forward to a great summer holiday full of sunshine! What a busy last few weeks it has been what with the sponsored walk, summer soiree, sports day, induction days and the summer fair, as well as so much more. It really does seem like my first term back at Stonebow has whizzed by at full speed! As we say goodbye to our Yr 6s and wave them off to pastures new, I wish them every success and future happiness in their new schools. I would also like to thank all the staff and children for their energy and hard work throughout the year and I look forward to welcoming them back on 28 th August, ready and refreshed for the year ahead. I hope we can continue to develop and extend our partnership with Parents and Carers too, as your support is an essential part of ensuring our children really can achieve their best. Have a great holiday everyone, hope you all enjoy some happy family sunny days! Kind regards, Jane Fines Friends of Stonebow Friends of Stonebow would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported all the events this year. The Sponsored Walk on the 6th of June was a wonderful afternoon, the children did so well walking (and running) around the school and the upper key stage 2 classes enjoyed the Stonebow walk. Together we raised a total of Well done everyone! A special congratulations to Miss Smiths class who raised the most money and will enjoy a treat on the last day of term. On Saturday, 5th July the rain held off and the sun even came out for Stonebow's summer fair. It really was a fantastic day and raised a total of 1, for the school. Friends would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event... the parent and grandparent volunteers, the teachers, the children who ran their own stalls and Mrs Wood, Mrs Carr and Miss Smith's classes who performed. The external Stall Holders and the following companies who donated...swift's Nursery for the plant donations, Morrisons for the delicious strawberries. Raffle prizes donated by; Tesco, h2o, Charnwood Leisure Centre, Leicester City, Zumba (Eva Jackson), Creation Pottery, Manor Farm, Barneys Playbarn, Chocolate Alchemy, Kents Candy, Memories 4 Ever, Georges Fish Bar. Finally, and certainly not least, to everyone who came along and joined in the fun - THANK YOU! Photos on page 7. The money raised this year will be going towards new playground markings around the school, a storytelling chair and a visit from an author. All of these would not be possible without the money raised by Friends of Stonebow, so please continue to support us next year. Friends of Stonebow will be meeting early in the autumn term, if you would like to join in the fun, meet other parents and raise money for the school please friendsofstonebow@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list. Also don't forget to check out our facebook page 'Friends of Stonebow Primary School'. Thanks again and we hope everyone has a fun and safe summer!

Town Sports Loughborough Town Sports 2014 On Saturday 28 th June Stonebow pupils competed in the Loughborough Town Sports event at Loughborough University. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of competing on a track where some of the country s best athletes train and all of the children did extremely well. The day started with the Year 6 girls relay semi-finals, which saw Rhianna Ong, Seeliveya Souriamourty, Jude Kirke, Abigail Aikman (Year 5) and Cara Hall competing in this event. The girls had previously qualified for the semi-finals by finishing in a fantastic second place in their heat at the Loughborough relay event two weeks earlier. All of the girls ran extremely well in a very tough semi-final to finish in 2 nd place and qualified for the final where they finished in 8 th place. Next up on the track was the middledistance events where Keira Lester-Seaton ran very well in the Year 4 girls 400m final. This race was followed by the Year 4 boys 400m final, which saw Mackenzie Jordan-Biggs run a fantastic race in the final. Keeping it in the family, Tia Lester-Seaton was next up on the track in the Year 5 girls 800m, where Tia used her cross-country endurance to help her run very well in the final. Colin Foord competed in the Year 5 boys 800m and he too used his endurance to his advantage to finish in an impressive 6 th place. In the Year 6 girls 800m Maya Patel ran an excellent race to finish 8 th in a tough final. Our attentions were then turned back to the individual sprint heats which saw Jessica Buckland powering her way through the Year 4 girls 75m heat in 2 nd place to qualify for the final, where she later finished in a fantastic 7 th place. It was a similar story in the Year 4 boys 50m heats, which saw Archie Bryan (Year 3) ease through his heat in 2 nd place and then just missed out on a medal in the final to finish in 4 th place in a very strong field of boys a year older than himself. Having already competed in the relay, Abigail Aikman competed in her second event of the day in the Year 5 girls 50m heats. Abigail Aikman ran a strong race to qualify for the final in 3 rd place, and later finished a brilliant 4 th place in the final. In very competitive Year 5 boys 50m heats, Kieran Oakes ran a great race to qualify for the final later in the day. In the final Kieran battled all the way in a tough race to finish 8 th place overall. In the Year 6 girls 50m heats, Cara Hall continued her excellent form that she showed in the relay to finish in 5 th place. In the 75m heats it was a family affair which saw Seeliveya Souriamourty (Year 6) run very well in her heat to finish in 7 th place. Seeliveya s brother Dinesh Souriamourty (Year 4) also ran a great race to finish 4 th in the Year 4 boys 75m heat, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Whilst the track events were taking place, Stonebow also had success in the field events. Matthew Hall competed in the Year 5 boys Long Jump and jumped very well to place 12 th in the final. Nathan Clafferty (Year 6) also competed in the Long Jump to finish 9 th in the final. In the Year 6 girls Long Jump competition, Rhianna Ong picked up our first medal of the day to finish a fantastic 2 nd place with a jump of 2.87m, in what was an extremely close battle for the top three places. In the throwing events our Year 6 competitors showed real determination in the Cricket Ball Throw. Brioney Holloway (Year 6) threw a huge 28.55m to finish in 4 th place, just missing out on a medal, whilst Callum Williams (Year 6) won Stonebow s second medal of the day to finish an excellent 3 rd place with an impressive throw of 38.38m. All of the children who competed in the Loughborough Town Sports did extremely well, competing against the best young athletes in Loughborough. All of the teachers are very proud of how they conducted themselves on the day and their exemplary whilst representing Stonebow. A big thank you to all of the parents who went along to support the event too.

Tyler Clarke As most of you will know a pupil from our school, Tyler Clarke, was involved in a serious road accident last month and is still in hospital. children and staff wanted to raise money for him and for The Air Ambulance Service so on Monday 30th June Stonebow held a non-uniform day. Children made cakes and bracelets to sell. We raised 681!!! We are going to give vouchers to Tyler and the rest to The Air Ambulance Service as they transported Tyler to hospital and took great care of him. I am extremely proud of our pupils for supporting our fundraising events, thank you. Mrs Houlton

Class 5 Talk about sports day Sports Day 2014 by Martha Dodds Year 2 First we got ready and Mrs Wood sent us to the classroom we were sopost to go to and that classroom was Mrs Mistry s classroom. I was in a taem with Molly and the team was called India. Mrs Mistry spoke about witch event she was the leader of. Mrs Mistry was the leader of the Scooter Slalom so we started at the Scooter Slalom. I felt very excited because I loved Sports Day. We had to go through the green cones and when we got to the blue cone we had to scooter back in a strate line. When the bell rang that ment we had to start. Hannah was first in the line and I was second. Then Hannah came back and I zoomed through the cones. Their was a few more people in the line. We had to pass the scooter along to the next person in the line after we went through the cones. Then the bell rang again so we stopped and after the bell went the whistle went so we had to move on to the next event. The next event was Basketball shoot. I was proud because we got quite a lot of points. Key stage one had to go with Mrs Sadler and key stage two had to go with Mrs Wetton. We got a lot of turns shooting the ball through the net. I got the ball through the net three times. Hannah got the ball through the net a lot of times. Then the bell and the whistle went and we moved on to the next event. The next event was the Javelin it was really hard. My arm was tired because I was throwing the Javelin really hard. I got the Javelin over the middle line. After I did another event I got thirsty but that was good because next there was a Drink Station. There were lots of other events but those events was the best. After all the events were done the 4 fastest girls and boys in the class had to race and I was in it. I came 4 th or 5 th. When everyone did there race we came to sit down on the grass and Mrs Fines told us which team got the most points. India came 3 rd and I was in India, Bangladesh came 2 nd and South Africa came 1 st. My dad was so proud of me. Sports Day 2014 by Gideon Jones Year 2 It was sports day and I was so excited! And I new which team I was in. When we got outside we was doing the Javelins. After that we did the over-under relay and I shouted move back!!!! Move back!!!! After that we were doing the sack race and I was jumping so hard that I triped in the sack and fell over it was awful! And I got up and keeped trieing after that we was doing the

bean bag throw. In the bean bag throw I throughed to bean bags and they went in the third hoop that meant six! I felt proud really proud. After all of these events I was really happy. I love the scooter slalom. hot, sweaty and thirsty. It was wonderful. When the bell went we went to the Scooter Slalom. It was very hard. Then I was boiling hot and sweaty still. Sports Day 2014 by Isabel Tebbutt Year 2 My favret event was the egg and spoon race because I did not drop the egg. It was eggsiting. After it was my go the bell went. Then we went to the Football dribbling. I code not do it. I am not used to Football. I did it in the end because I tried and tried my best I was proud after all of that. Next I did the Hockey Dribbling. Mrs Wood was on this. I fort I code do it. But I was not very good. It was fun even though I couldn t do it. The bell went. So we went onto the race and I was very tired, Sports Day 2014 by Fiona Collins Year 2 When I was getting ready I felt scared. My team is called South Africa and the people who are in my team are Ashleigh and Cleo. The Sack Race is my faverite of them all, well I did fall over a couple of times but it is still my faverite race. The one that I did not like was the egg and spoon race because the egg kept falling off the spoon. After the games I was pleased with my team. I was hungry, happy and tired.

Summer Reading Challenge What is the Summer Reading Challenge? The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice, collecting stickers and other rewards along the way all FREE. And now, all year round, the Summer Reading Challenge website helps you keep track of your reading, find new books to read, take part in competitions and play games. Children should bring their certificates into school at the start of term to be recorded. Don t forget to send a postcard. The website is or follow these links from the school website.

The Twits The Year 6 s have been working tirelessly to produce a fantastic end of year production of Roald Dahl s story The Twits. Throughout the process they have learned lines, created characters, rehearsed songs and routines and the final piece is a genuine collaboration involving all of the children. Mr Cook is really proud of how they have worked as a team to produce a piece of quality youth theatre. A huge thank you to all involved.

Notes from the office. Dinner Money. The price of dinners will increase to 2.10 per day from next term. Please ensure that you pay in advance and send in a sealed and named envelope. Thank you. Attendance and term time absence We do need to continue to improve our overall attendance in the new school year and we will be reviewing our Attendance Policy early in the term. We have tried to be lenient in dealing with any outstanding holiday requests this term but any future requests which are not due to exceptional circumstances may result in a penalty notice being issued. We will be working closely with Naina Zavery, our Education Welfare Officer, who may become involved when a pupil s attendance dips below 95%. She will be completing an audit over the Summer and supporting us to implement any changes to our policy. New Uniform Policy I hope you have all received the feedback from the uniform questionnaire and the new uniform policy which was sent out last week. Although we are allowing time to phase out the old colours we will be expecting everyone to conform to the policy guidance on shoes, polo shirts and trousers/skirts from the beginning of term. I have now met with all our current suppliers who have updated the items and colours available. Our 3 main suppliers for logo items are : Rosebuddies (Hannah and Karen) on the Market every Thursday (outside Boots) and Saturday (outside Café Nero) The Schoolwear Shop on the High Street (10% discount for orders before ) - good quality online orders which can be delivered to school for free Plain navy and white items are available from most high street shops and supermarkets. Bike and Scooter Safety Can we just remind everyone that bikes and scooters must not be ridden on school premises. All children must dismount on entering the playground and this includes toddlers and younger brothers and sisters as well. This also applies at the end of the day too please do not allow children to ride around the playground at the front or the rear of the school. Thank you.
