Newton County 4-H News Committed to Excellence in Youth Development Hello 4-H Families: It is hard to believe that we are rapidly approaching the half-way point of The busyness of summer is just about upon us, and I wanted to offer a reflection of the holiday that is just past, Memorial Day. Memorial Day has it s roots in our American history at the conclusion of the Civil War when General John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a decree that May 30th should become a national day of commemoration for the more than 620,000 soldiers killed in the recently ended war. At a larger level, it helps me to remember that there is nothing in this life that is free. It pays to remember that in so many ways. If you are being offered something free, you might want to examine it to see what kind of hidden strings might be attached. In our civil life, the same holds true. If something I being offered as free you can bet that someone else is paying for the [privilege of it being free to someone else. On Memorial Day, I would encourage you to always remember that the freedoms we cherish are not free, but cost all dearly and some ultimately. There are very few nations on this earth that have the opportunities that we, many times, take for granted. The ability to pursue an education, the ability to publicly disagree with the positions others take politically, or even the privilege to travel without hindrance. All these are privileges enjoyed by few other countries. So take a moment to offer a simple thank you to those that stand in the gap on our behalf, which include military personnel, law enforcement, and emergency workers, as well. My hat goes off, and I hope yours does too, to those that pay the price of freedom that we all enjoy. I hope you had a good holiday, and are ready to get busy as camp and fair season are now here. I look forward to seeing you around the clover! Mike Coffey, 4-H Youth Specialist Memorial Day, 1982 "I have no illusions about what little I can add now to the silent testimony of those who gave their lives willingly for their country Yet, we must try to honor them not for their sakes alone, but for our own. And if words cannot repay the debt we owe these men, surely with our actions we must strive to keep faith with them and with the vision that led them to battle and to final sacrifice." Ronald Reagan And so, my fellow Americans... ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. John F. Kennedy 1

6 University of Missouri Extension Newton County Hwy 59 Neosho, MO Clover Kids Corner What Did I See? Purpose: To help young children learn to be aware of their surroundings, be observant, and learn the value of working in groups. Tell the Clover Kids that you are going to play a game that will help them learn to watch and learn with their eyes. Have the children put their heads on the table or desk, and walk around the room. Remind them not to peak. When you tap one child on the shoulder, that child gets up quietly and leaves the room. Ask the kids to open their eyes and ask Who is missing? Ask them. What color are his eyes? What was he wearing? What kind of shoes was he wears? Hair color?... Another way to play this game is to have the children sit in a circle and place 12 or more everyday objects in the middle. Give them a minute or two to observe. Cover objects with a blanket and have the Clover Kids go back to the table. Tell them to work as a group to see if they can remember them all.
