5 Page 5 Barry Ward s Speech Eye Opener It has been a great honor to serve as Kempenfelt Rotary Club president over this past year. I wanted to begin by thanking those who nominated me a couple of years ago as incoming president: Ken Pickering, Steve Thompson and Steve Periard. I probably should have thanked you as my year began but I m pretty cautious. I wanted to see how the year went before deciding if it was something for which I was thankful. I can now say it has been a wonderful experience. I can t say enough about the many, many club members who have stepped forward this past year to make our weekly meetings so interesting, our community events so lively and our fundraisers operating smoothly. As president, you really get to see how hard it is to make everything look so easy. I can t centre out all of those who have lent a hand over the past year but I did want to honor my board. Jackie, Steve Periard, Mike, Heather, -Thanks to the club for the opportunity to serve in this way. It is will be my honor Scott Brumwell, Ben, Kirk, John Grinton with a token of my appreciation. I also wanted to thank Marg. It s not easy being the spouse of a morning club Rotarian, especially when you have young children who have to get ready for school. So thanks, Marg. And thanks our sons Julian and Oliver for your support as well. It was also an honor to attend the many community functions our club puts on as Kempenfelt Rotary President: Skate With the Colts, the Golf Tournament, Battle of the Bands, Taste the World and, the most recent one this past Sunday at the waterfront, Kids Fishing Day. Once again, the club outdid itself in putting on a first-class event. I was even present for what I predict will become a fabled story in Kempenfelt Rotary for years to come, on a par with John Grinton - I would also like to take a momment to remember Jack Delcourt who was an inspiration to me and an asset to this club. I will endeavor to make him proud accidentally cancelling our meeting on April 1. For those of you who weren t present, here s what happened. It had been a great day but about 1 p.m. hundreds of kids and their families, weary from a full morning of fishing or playing in the inflatable s had gathered around the stage to watch some entertainment but, more importantly for the kids, anyway, see if they had the winning ticket for the numerous draws. We held a couple of draws, gave out a few prizes and then gave way to the Clown Band which took forever to set up before launching into their songs about sunshine and fish and whatnot. By this time, a bit of rain was coming down and the kids and their parents were getting a tad restless. So, two songs in, past President Steve Thompson takes the stage in front of the Clown Band and announces we re going to do the draws for a few more prizes, which he does. Then, in a classic moment in Kempenfelt Rotary history, he asks the crowd: Do you want to hear another song? To which 500 increasingly wet parents and their restless children shout back, in unison: No! Tough crowd! Steve, I have to tell you as I was tucking Oliver into bed that night and asking him about the day, he said: I kind of felt sorry for those -Hope to lead the club by example clowns. The last two weeks held another highlight. I wanted to talk a bit about the Rotary International convention in Montreal which Mike Kinsey, Terry Steine and myself attended last week. Let me tell you, if you get a chance to attend such an event, grab it. We all know the numbers: 1.2 million Rotarians in 33,000 clubs. But this gathering -Will only ask of you what I am willing to do myself puts a face to those numbers. You ll find yourself sitting in a room, as I did, between an accountant from California and a surgeon from Uganda, people you d never normally meet except for the fact you are all Rotarians. The opening plenary began with flags from the attending countries being marched into the Bell Centre, a bit like the Olympics. By the end of the ceremony, there were more than 100 flags including that of Palestine where Rotary has been reestablished, through the cooperation of Rotary Clubs in both Jordan and Israel. When you start looking through the program and visiting the many, many booths in the Hall of Friendship, you begin to get an idea of the scope of Rotary membership. There are fellowships devoted to Rotary Skiers and Rotary Golfers, of course, but also amateur radio and car restorers and birdwatchers and pilots and those that are single and stamp collectors not just any stamps, mind you, but those who collect stamps from around the world honoring Rotary. There was even an International Fellowship of Rotarian Convention Goers. And I noticed in the program the annual meeting of the Rotary magicians was being held Monday at 1:30 in Room 525. And there were about 100 booths for various Rotary action groups and projects, each one with a person or two sitting there waiting to tell you about how they were working to make the world a better place. Crutches for Africa, Rotarians Against Child Slavery, the Guatemala Literacy Project, the Rotary Action Group for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness, the Global Network for Blood Donation. The booths went on and on. The amount of good work being done by Rotarians around the world is just mind-boggling. And then there were the groups that work with Rotary: Habitat for Humanity, Shelterbox, Sleeping Children Around the World and dozens more. It s obvious Rotary has a lot of friends in the non-profit world. And the speakers! Where else could you find Queen Noor of Jordan talking about ending world conflict one day and Dolly Parton speaking about the importance of reading, something close to her heart as she talked about her dad never being able to read or write. She even played guitar and sang a couple of songs. A Philippines Rotarian and minister talked about getting kids off the street in that country; bestselling author Greg Mortensen talked about life and death in war-torn Afghanistan. One of the most inspirational speakers, for me, was Bruce Aylward, the Canadian doctor heading the Global Polio Eradication Initiative who said, after a couple of years of setbacks, great strides are now being made in those countries where polio still exists. We really are that close to ridding the world of polio once and for all but we can t let down our guard for even a minute. Yes, the RI convention brings home just how Rotary reaches into the four corners of the globe. In the plenaries and breakout sessions, delegates heard about how Rotary brings safe drinking water and sanitation to many third world nations, local nutritious food plants to developing countries, literacy to Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Brazil and methods of fighting malaria in Africa. And then there was the non-official fellowship. Riding the elevator at your hotel, catching a drink in a bar, eating supper in a restaurant, you d be surrounded by Rotarians from around the world. You d find yourself glancing at each other s name badges and beginning a conversation. But President John Kenny, whose term ended at the Montreal meeting, reminded us once again, as he has all year, that none of the great work being done around the world would be possible without the local club. He pointed out fellowship and community involvement is the key to a strong organization. It all begins here, at our weekly meetings. Which brings me back to my year as president, which is about to draw to a close as well. If weekly meetings and fellowship are cornerstones of a successful club, I feel Kempenfelt Rotary is in good shape. I would encourage everyone of you to keep in mind President Kenny s theme for the past year: The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. And remember what I said at the beginning of this wonderful year: YOUR future in Rotary is in your hands. Thank you all for your support. Now, I d like to hand the presidential chain over to incoming President Mike Kinsey.
