1 May 16, 2011 RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Seven of the ten 2011 RYLA attendees from our club Rotary Youth Leadership Awards or RYLA in Rotary speak - is Rotary s leadership training program for young people. The first RYLA originated in Queensland, Australia in 1959 as a festival highlighting local youth, in honor of a royal visit by Queen Victoria. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but our club focuses on Fort Wayne area high school students. RYLA is an intensive training program that emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth. It also provides an opportunity for Rotarians to mentor promising young leaders. Our District RYLA is held at the YMCA Camp Tecumseh, in Brooklyn, Indiana just outside of West Lafayette. The camp is a three day event that is held over a weekend, with around 120 students attending. Our club covers all expenses and provides transportation for the weekend. This week we had seven of the ten students nominated from our club who presented us with a recap of their RYLA experiences. This presentation proved to be enlightening, entertaining and highly interactive! Continued on Page 3

3 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Continued from Page 1 The students recounted experiences that ran the gamut from activities, to food, to new found friends and exceptional speakers! We were taught some new ice breakers - the coffee drinkers, lumberman s and fisherman s handshakes! Kay Ostrum and Bill Harris try out the Lumberman s Handshake Each of the students commented on how much the weekend impacted them and the way they view themselves and the world. They were all very thankful for the opportunity that our club had given them. The RYLA program is a tremendous dollar value and money very well spent! MeloDEEs and Memories Annual Dinner All good things must come to an end! Sad, but true - and it applies to Rotary Presidents too! The Celebration Committee is hard at work finalizing preparations for our annual dinner where we will recognize President Dee Hoffman and her (extended) term as our club president! Block the evening of Tuesday, June 28 th out in your calendar and be ready for some MeloDEEs and Memories! Details to follow!

4 Cleo Fox Scholarships Awarded! From Kelly Updike - Five students won Cleo Fox scholarships from the Downtown Fort Wayne Rotary Club at auditions that took place on March 14 th at the WB01 music studio. A total of $3,000, raised by Downtown Rotarians at their fall golf outing, was awarded. The students will attend a summer program to further their musical education. They are: Jiwon Park, piano, Homestead High School sophomore, $1,000, Indiana University Jacobs Music Piano Academy Morgan Marshaus, flute and piccolo, Woodlan Junior- Senior High School junior, $500, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Summer Clinic Lucas Norton, saxophone, Blackhawk Christian School freshman, $300, Music for All Summer Symposium, jazz study Austin Lewellen, bass, South Side High School junior, $800, Brevard Music Center Kayla Myers, flute, Northrop High School freshman, $395, International Music Camp, North Dakota Judges were Diane Dickson of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, past Cleo Fox winner Maggie Kelly and Rotarians Masson Robertson, John Leal and Amy Kelly. Assisting were Cleo Fox committee members Bill Raftree, Tony McNair and Chair Kelly Updike. For the past 29 years, the Cleo Fox scholarship committee has awarded student scholarships to honor the musical passion of Cleo, who joined the Fort Wayne Rotary Club in For many years, one scholarship was provided to Interlochen (Michigan) International Music Camp, of which Fox was a founder. Cleo was a Michigan native, trombonist and assistant director of the Philharmonic. Fox served as Rotary Club pianist and secretary. He died at the age of 80 in May The club then endowed the scholarship fund to honor Fox s service and musical stewardship. River Greenway Clean-Up Be There! From Bill Gabbard Our Environment Committee will be conducting its annual spring cleaning along the Rotary Circle of Hope at Headwaters Park on Saturday morning, May 21 st at 10:00AM. A sign-up sheet follows at the end of this issue.

5 Birthday Blessings Event Recap From Debby Beckman - On May 5 th, Rotarians teamed up with Birthday Blessings of Northeast Indiana to plan and carry out a birthday party for children living at the Vincent Village Transitional Housing Shelter in Fort Wayne. Twenty-five children and adults participated in the evening s activities that included a meal and birthday cake, birthday gifts for three children celebrating birthdays in the month of May, and a craft activity. Children experiencing homelessness often have a hard adjustment to life in a shelter. Celebrating birthdays is one way to bring a sense of normalcy to a less than normal experience. A copy of a thank you note from one of the children follows at the end of this newsletter. Due to security concerns, no photographs were allowed at this event. Special thanks to Rotarians Sharon Pohly, Hope Sheehan, Mike Kelly along with Allison Rorick of Birthday Blessings for putting Service Above Self and bringing an evening of cheer to three children! Let us not forget Debby Beckman for chairing this event! Birthday Blessings provides parties at shelters throughout the area on a regular basis. To volunteer or for more information, visit their website at Tutors Needed at Washington School From Randy Roberts- There are many children who still need tutors at Washington School. This central city school has an above average number of young students who read below grade level. Study Connection is an excellent way for us to really make a difference in these worthy lives and get them on a path for a brighter future.

6 If you can read at a 2 nd -5 th grade level and do not have a current police record, you are qualified. The commitment is only one hour a week during the middle of the school year. You can commit to oneon-one with a student (best option), or if you can t do that, then be a study buddy with another person and share a student. It does take a while to get approved, so please commit now for the next school year starting in October. Maybe your spouse/friend/co-worker would like to tutor also. Service Above Self has never felt better! Rotary Club of Fort Wayne Chair Training There s no grass growing under Mike Kelly s feet! Our Club President is hard at work laying the foundation to ensure an outstanding year for our club! Mike facilitated two Chair Training sessions this week, inviting all incoming committee chairs for an opportunity to come together, exchange ideas, and where he could share his thoughts, plans and expectations for the coming Rotary year. The first session took place Monday afternoon and was attended by about 2/3 of the committee chairs, as well as the VP Dave Borgen, President Elect Jeff Krull and Club Secretary Jane Wilks. Incoming President Mike has hand-picked a dynamic and ever-so committed group of Fort Wayne Rotarians to lead our Club s committees! Based on the interaction at these very positive sessions, is shaping up to be a memorable and very successful year! Our thanks to Jeff Krull and the Allen County Public Library for the use of his meeting facilities to hold the training sessions!

8 Environmental Committee Fort Wayne Rotary Fort Wayne, Indiana CIRCLE OF HOPE / AVENUE OF TREES / RIVERGREENWAY CLEANUP DAY - SATURDAY MAY 21 10:00 AM Please note that the next Clean Up Day for the Rotary Circle of Hope - Rivergreenway Section is Saturday, May 21, Fort Wayne Rotary has Headwaters Part East, the portion of the downtown park east of Clinton Street, and the section that contains both the Rotary Circle of Hope and the Rotary Avenue of Trees. There is parking off Clinton Street at the south end of Headwaters Part East. We will meet at the two block houses near the Lincoln Pavilion in the parking lot at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 21. The Park Department has asked Rotary to particularly work the river bank picking up litter and debris. We will circle the park perimeter, the Circle of Hope section, the Avenue of Trees and then check the center section.
