1 November 12, 2012 Out of the Park, Into the Heart of it All: Harrison Square Progress Report What goes into a successful downtown development project? How about 5,000 cubic yards of concrete, 437,000 pounds of steel, 19 miles of dimensional lumber, 1.37 acres of dry wall, and 39 miles of wire? When finished in February 2013, The Harrison will feature 62 luxury residences in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne. These third and fourth floor condominiums, built above two 24,000 square foot levels of retail and commercial space, serve as the hub to the north side of Fort Wayne s Harrison Square development. Three Rivers Credit Union and O'Reilly's Irish Bar are first floor tenants. The second floor is leased to Carson Boxberger Attorneys. 4 Welcome Our November Student Rotarian Mike Kelly introduced Katy Yagodinski, a senior at Bishop Luers High School, as our November Student Rotarian. Katy is interested in a career in Business or Accounting, with plans to attend IPFW or St. Francis. She is active as a volunteer volleyball coach in summer and the season, at her church (St. John New Haven). Welcome Katy! Group Study Exchange Program Mike Kelly reports that District 6540 Northern Indiana is exchanging with District 1920 Western Austria. Think Innsbruck, Linz, and Salzburg. Dates are as follows: Inbound: April 13 May 11, 2013 Hub Clubs are Anthony Wayne, South Bend, Crown Pointe, and Bluffton. Our committee will be working with Anthony Wayne to serve as a spoke club. Outbound: May 18 June 15, 2013 Team Leader is Burne Miller from Elkhart. Our club sponsored 5 candidates to the district s selection committee to field 4 team members. Three of these candidates made the team. They are: Tara Burge, a Clinical Specialist from Paragon Rehabilitation Rhonda Ladig-Moxter, an Admissions Coordinator from Indiana Tech Kirk Weesner, a personal trainer from Personal Training Institute and the YMCA The fourth team member is Nathan Bosch, a civil engineer from The Troyer Group (Sponsored by the Elkhart Morning club). All have been invited to future meetings of our club so that they can learn about Rotary and our club firsthand as they prepare to represent us, our district, and the US next spring. 6 Seeking Nominations for Kap Kilbourne Trust funded Paul Harris Fellow for Exceptional Community Service Annually, the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne recognizes those in Allen County Indiana who have made extraordinary contributions of their time, talents and resources over an extended period of time as community service Service Above Self. Funds from the Kap Klibourn Trust are used to recognize individuals as Paul Harris Fellows for their exceptional community service. Kap was a long time member of Rotary, a very successful businessmen and a community servant leader of Fort Wayne. Look for the nomination form that is included in this issue of the Spin. Environmental Committee Chair Bill Gabbard reports that last Saturday s River greenway clean up day included 14 Rotarians and family members who collected 30 bags of trash and garbage! Thanks to all who participated!! And Finally A New Honor is Bestowed On November 5, President Dave announced that there would not be a Gold Standard presentation for the week as the actions of the Rotarian being recognized far surpass the criteria required of the Gold Standard that it demanded the creation of an entirely new award! It was the inspiration of Tom Wooding and a letter of recognition he wrote to honor our own Mike Kelly. He is the November Student Rotarian Chair, the co-chair of the GSE committee, chair of the nomination committee, plus the greenway Clean-up, the upcoming International Committeehosted RAH RAH. For his unstoppable spirit, Mike receives the club s first-ever Energizer Bunny Award!

7 The Rotary Club Supports our Troops! The Rotary Club of Fort Wayne will be adopting our fellow Rotarian s sons and daughters who are currently deployed and serving our country. During the month of November we will be collecting items to send care packages to these deployed troops. Below is a list of top items requested by our troops overseas. *baby wipes* (individual size so they can carry them in their pockets, not the big boxes) protein/cereal bars individual size Crystal Light or other individual size drink mixes beef jerky Nuts (individual serving packets) *Emphasis* candy (chocolate can only be sent Dec thru Feb) Chapstick *Warm wool winter socks* individual mouthwash (no glass bottles) breath mints/breath strips newer DVDs new magazines cookies/snack foods More items are also listed at: Please bring donation items with you to regular Rotary Club meetings in November and deposit them in the USPS flat rate shipping boxes on the entry tables. Boxes will be shipped on Dec 1st to arrive before the Holidays. Troops also greatly appreciate personal letters and notes! Please consider writing a card or letter to accompany your donation.
