1 November 19, 2012 Mainsprings of the Wildcat: The Making of Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville He was a signatory to the Treaty of Greenville (1795) and later treaties with the United States through the Treaty of Mississinwas (1826). He was known as Pinšiwa in Miami (meaning Wildcat, also spelled Peshewa) and was the tribe s last civil chief. He was Jean Baptiste de Richardville, born to a Miami mother and a French officer, educated in Quebec and at home in both cultures, which made him a skilled negotiator. He controlled an important portage connecting the Maumee River to the Little River through which, by his death in 1841, he was considered the wealthiest man in Indiana. The History Center s Executive Director Todd Maxwell Pelfrey told club members that by negotiating treaties in which Richardville was given legal deeds and other binding assurances, he built an economic base that he used to benefit his people. Pinšiwa often offered his private lands as a refuge for other Miami. This enabled about half of the Miami people to remain in Indiana when the tribe was officially removed by the US in 1846 to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, five years after Richardville died. The Richardville House, built in 1827, still stands at 5705 Bluffton Road and was named a national historic landmark in March The History Center maintains the property and opens the house to the public on the first Saturday of each month from May until November presenting a variety of programs that celebrate Miami culture and tradition.

4 Lisa s Rotary Youth Exchange Year Going Well! Host Family Needed in the New Year Lisa Obata, our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Japan, shared a bit about her stay in Fort Wayne to date at our meeting last week. President Dave announced that our RYE committee is still looking for a host family in the Carroll High School area. The time period would be from the Christmas/New Year holiday through Lisa s departure in July. Please contact club leadership if you can help! 5 A Gold Standard Honor for Bill Gabbard! Environmental Committee Chair Bill Gabbard was recognized with the Gold Standard at our meeting last Monday. He has been in this committee leadership position for years of outstanding service and support to our club! Our community is a safer and more beautiful place because of Bill s work and dedication. Seeking Nominations for Kap Kilbourne Trust funded Paul Harris Fellow for Exceptional Community Service Annually, the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne recognizes those in Allen County Indiana who have made extraordinary contributions of their time, talents and resources over an extended period of time as community service Service Above Self. Funds from the Kap Klibourn Trust are used to recognize individuals as Paul Harris Fellows for their exceptional community service.
