On Friday 8th January, year 6 had a celebration to finish their War and Peace topic. It was our version of VE Day celebrations (Victory in Europe) which happened at the end of World War II. During the day, year 6 created bunting and decorations to adorn the hall. Pupils also brought food to eat such as cakes and biscuits which they enjoyed at the party. Imane (Ash class) stated, It was awesome! Lots of children enjoyed creating the decorations and making the sandwiches. There was a dance competition to the sounds of Glen Miller to see who had the best 1944 dance moves. Like all good things, the party had to end but it was a wonderful day for year 6. By Issah and Jouin On Monday 11th January, about 50 children went to the LG Arena in Birmingham to take part in the Young Voices concert. First of all, everyone gathered in the hall waiting expectantly for the coach. When it arrived, the pupils and adults eagerly climbed aboard. We arrived at our destination after about 2 hours and were then able to have our lunch and chat with our friends. After that, we began practising for the concert. The concert was amazing and we sang many different songs including a medley called Transport of Delight. Everybody was so tired after the concert and several people fell asleep on the coach on the way home. Megan Hounsell stated, It was great fun and I enjoyed it just as much as the year before. It was a great experience and if I had the chance I would definitely go again. Below are some photos of the fabulous concert. By Igneta Indriulyte 3 4

On Tuesday 9th February 2016, it was Shrove Tuesday also known as PANCAKE DAY!!!!!!! Only the Year 5 classes (Pine,Elm and Sycamore) got to create the tastiest pancakes EVER! Picture of Auguste Vaitkute Some of the pancake toppings enjoying her delicious pancake! were: Maple Syrup Chocolate sauce Lemon Juice Caster Sugar Congratulations Left to Right: to Mr. Tootal for being an expert Caitlin Baxter, Madison Hall, Deivids tosser! Ismavovs, Edvinas Norvillas, Samanta Brasinuate and Navleen Kaur. By Evie Clifton Since the start of this school year, Dean Papworth (our behaviour management specialist) has delivered forest school to a small group of year 5 students. The purpose of forest school is to learn new skills, develop confidence and have freedom. The school takes place on the right corner on the school field where there is some woodland. During forest school, pupils experience a range of activities such as treasure hunts, creating a fire, building dens, building bridges and much more! The children have particularly enjoyed toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate! THANK YOU DEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By Evie Clifton Pictured above and to the left are pupils enjoying some of the varied activities. 5 6

On the last day of half term, year 3 took part in a Chinese cooking day. We made a delicious dish. First, half of Willow class were determined to get chopping, boiling and exhausted! To begin with, we washed our hands, put on our aprons and found a partner. Next, very carefully, we chopped some mushrooms, cabbage and spring onions. These were fried and we added sweet and sour sauce, plain noodles and chicken. Finally, we got to eat the fabulous food which was yummy! Also, everybody got a fortune cookie. It was a brilliant experience which was enjoyed by everybody in year 3. On Thursday 25th February and Friday 26th February, year 4 presented a play about Australia called The Awesome Aussie Show. It had everything from dancing to Australian versions of popular British TV shows such as Coach Trip and Family Fortunes. There was a sketch called Duggy Dingo where Owen Taylor (Almond class) was dressed as an Australian explorer and he made everyone jump by screaming the crocodile is attacking me (rest assured that it was just an inflatable crocodile!) - the audience found this part especially funny. Issah exclaimed, It was hilarious and well presented. A great show which had everyone laughing. Well done year 4. Pictured below are some photos of the year 4 pupils taking part in this brilliant production. By Zymel Mirza Jarral Here are some pictures from our special day. 7 8

On Tuesday 1st March, Miss. Nash took six gymnasts from Dogsthorpe Academy to compete in a gymnastics competition at Spiral s gymnasium in Bretton. The people who went were: Evie Clifton, Nojus Simaskates, Igneta Indriulyte, Connor Wells, Taylor Martin and Tilly Ward. Everybody was very excited to sit in the taxi seats facing the opposite way to usual! It was so amazing! When we arrived, we enjoyed our healthy lunch. Following that, we headed for the gym which was massive and well equipped. After warming up, we prepared to compete. The first activity was the vault which we all took part in. 9 Next, the boys did the body management which included push ups. Finally, the girls performed their floor exercise. All the gymnasts who took part had been working hard practising their routines during lunch times under the supervision of Miss. Nash (who is a qualified gymnastics coach) and Mr. Elger (our P.E. specialist teacher). Although Dogsthorpe Academy did not win, all the pupils did themselves and the Academy proud and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The gymnastics team are pictured here. By Igneta Indriulyte On Wednesday 2nd March, a group of lucky pupils went to Old Trafford (home of Manchester United) to watch a football game. It was a tiring four hour journey, however the exciting match made it worthwhile. Manchester United vs Watford FC, it was an amazing game of football! Although only one goal was scored, that one goal was extraordinary. Juan Mata scored a free kick leaving the final score 1 0 to Manchester United. When asked about the trip, Kaylum exclaimed, This was amazing! Aurimas agreed with this comment. Everyone enjoyed it and a big thank you to Mr. Tootal for organising this great event. It was a day to remember. By Jouin Baca. Pictured right are some pupils enjoying the amazing event. 10

Meet the academy councillors Being an Academy councillor is Being an Academy c a very responsible job. These are our amazing councillors: On 3rd March, it was World Book Day a celebration of books and reading around the world. Children were allowed to dress as their favourite book character and many children came in wearing some incredible costumes. During the day, some of the year groups did activities focused around different books. At the end of the day, we had an assembly to announce the winners of the best costumes from each class. In addition, the teachers also had a chance to win a prize. The winners were: Issah, Navjot, Tia, Rayon, Nicola, Lillia, Grace, Kaisha, Tereze and Gracie-Lee. The winning teacher was Mrs. Jordan, who was dressed as the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz, complete with green face paint! Thank you and well done to everyone who made an effort to dress up and help make it a special day. By Issah Pictured right is Birch class and some of the staff and pupils modelling their costumes. Pictured above are the Academy councillors (for the first half of the school year) in the outdoor learning area. Recently, classes held elections for new school councillors where children who wanted to be considered had to put forward reasons why they should be chosen. The class then voted for who they wanted to represent them. The school coucillors meet regularly with Mrs. Cranke to discuss important issues. Speak to your school councillor if there is anything that you would like to suggest. By Erica Ruiters 11

Shared by Hadiya Shah Method: Ingredients: 200g unsalted butter, at room temperature 100g golden caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 200g icing sugar 2 tbsp milk Few drops of yellow food colouring 75g dessicated coconut 50g small chocolate chips 25g orange fondant icing lolly sticks Put half the butter and all the sugar in a bowl. Using an electric whisk or wooden spoon, beat together until smooth and creamy. Beat in the egg and half the vanilla extract until thoroughly combined. Tip the flour into the mixture and mix on a low speed until it comes together to form a dough. Gather up into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 20 mins. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line 2 baking trays with baking parchment. Put the biscuit dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out until about 5mm thick. Cut out the biscuits using a 6cm round cutter. Transfer the biscuits to the prepared trays and insert the lolly sticks into the sides, just a quarter of the way through. Bake for 6-7 mins until the edges are golden brown, then carefully transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely before decorating. Meanwhile, make some buttercream by placing the remaining softened butter in a bowl and beat together with the icing sugar until you have a smooth creamy mixture. Add a little milk and a few drops of the yellow food colouring. Put the dessicated coconut in a bowl and add a few drops of yellow food colouring until the coconut is coloured pale yellow. Spread the buttercream over one side of the biscuit and sprinkle with the coconut. Add 2 chocolate eyes to each. Pinch a little orange fondant icing and shape into a beak and press into the mixture. Enjoy! 13 What do you call a magic owl? HOO-dini! What do you call a time traveling owl? Doctor HOO! What do sea monsters eat for lunch? Fish and ships! What do you call fake pasta? An impasta!
