MAY 2015 Words from the Baroness The Steppes Letter Unto the do I, Ekaterina, Baroness of the Steppes, send warmest greetings. Summer is upon us and with it come a myriad of activities. Let me begin by congratulating all of our graduates both from high school and college. Graduation is a stepping stone to better things and I wish all of our new graduates a successful future. Congratulations also go to the first three Masters of Defense: Don Miguel Vaello de Villa Joiosa, Don Caelan MacRob, and Don Robin of Gilwell. They will be elevated at Grand Coastal on May 2. We know that this peerage will have a bright future in Ansteorra. Special Points of Interest Chronicler position open Quartermaster Position open for bids Archery Marshall open for bids STEPPES WARLORD has arrived! Plans are in full-swing and volunteers for gate, setup, and cleanup are needed. We are the hosts for this event. While your participation is appreciated, it is more important that we are good hosts to our guests. Please take the time to volunteer to assist our steward, HLy Sarah, with the task of running this event. We are pleased to note that Longship will be in attendance to serve omelettes on Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to Our Canton of Glaslyn for hosting a fun event. As always, the day was filled with activities, laughter, and the company of good friends. I am so glad we were able to spend the weekend with such a great group of people. In June, Our incipient canton of KyngesCreke is hosting King s College. They are needing teachers as well as volunteers. I am very much looking forward to a day of learning and sharing. We are still needing award recommendations. Please use the online form (found in forms, then click the red link) or you can me at baroness@steppes.ansteorra.org. Your friends deserve recognition for their efforts. Please help me and Their Majesties award them for their time and work they put forth to make our Barony, cantons, and Our Kingdom what it is today. As always, travel safely and take a friend with you. The more, the merrier! 2 from the Seneschal Greetings Children of the Steppes, Well, Warlord is almost upon us. This means camping, fighting, partying, and all around fun. Remember when camping, it will be hot, it will be cold, it will be wet, it will be dry. Pack accordingly. Also, remember that this is a Steppes hosted event. That means we all volunteer when we can. Many hands make light work. When you go to other events, you have fun because others have worked hard so you could have that fun. Let us all return that favor so those driving from afar can have fun. Help those that need a hand set up a tent or take it down. I want to see each and every one of you at the event. If you have never met me, please come to my camp and introduce yourself to me. There will be plenty of things going on all weekend. Artisans will be arting, fighters will be fighting, heralds will be heralding. So show up, have fun, and help others have fun. There is fun in numbers. Seneschal Sir Domingo de la Vega (Charles Barnes) I remain in service to the Barony and Kingdom Domingo Page 2

Barony of the Da'ud Steppes Bob Movie Review for May Galavant So, the day had finally arrived, and it was airing on TV. Eight half hour episodes of adventure, set squarely in the Middle Ages. Dashing heroes. Damsels in distress. Villains. Villainy. Dungeons. Castles. Cameo appearances by famous actors. Swordplay. Knights in armor. Everything a reviewer of movies and shows set in the Middle Ages (or Renaissance) could possibly want. And it could be educational, too! (I know that I certainly learned a few things!) So I sat and watched the entire series. (Season 1. No word yet on if there will be a Season 2.) The series has been described in a number of ways, but my f avorite is: "one part Robin Hood: Men In Tights and one part The Princess Bride with liberal doses of Monty Python And The Holy Grail added in for good measure. So you can imagine my feelings of anticipation (and potential dread) when the day finally came for its airing and I could review it for you. Well, it did, and I did, and so it is that this month, Da'ud Bob reviews for you ABC's wintertime fill in for their long running Once Upon a Time while it was on hiatus, Galavant. Starring Joshua Sasse as our hero Galavant, Mallory Jansen as his love Madalena, Timothy Omundson as the wicked (well, at least he tries to be) King Richard, Vinnie Jones as his confidant/bodyguard/henchman Gareth, Karen David as Princess Isabella, Luke Youngblood as Sid (short for Sidney), Darren Evans as the Chef, and with a host of cameos by the likes of John Stamos, Rutger Howard (as King Richard's elder brother Kingsley), Ricky Gervais, "Weird Al" Yankovic (a member of an order of singing monks), and Hugh (Lord Grantham of Downton Abbey) Bonneville as Peter Pillager the Pirate King ("next to the sea"), and Sophie (Downton Abbey s cook s apprentice Daisy Mason) McShera, Galavant is the story of a dashing hero attempting to reclaim his "Happily Ever After" after his love, Madalena, is stolen from him by the evil King Richard. Of course, there's a lot more to it than just that. For one thing, once he gets to Madalena, she doesn't want to go back to him, preferring riches over true love. The plot not so much "thickens" as it twists and turns like a convoluted medieval line dance. A medieval line dance during which, on a regular basis, people break out into song. Good points: The horses. The castles. The tents. Real chain mail. Decent heraldry (for the most part, and some of it was real!). Some of the costuming. The armorial stained glass windows. Bad points: "We're doing 'it.'" The way they almost constantly break into song. The epee versus broadsword fight. The lions in some of the coats of arms were taken straight out of Fox Davies (a late 19th Century author). Sidneyland. Galavant's dad wearing the Royal Arms of England. (Appropriate to the era, and heralds would blazon them as Quarterly, 1 and 4, France ancient, 2 and 3, England, but entirely inappropriate to be worn by anyone except the King of England or one of his heralds.) Zero breasts. No blood. Ten dead bodies. Sword fu. Lance fu. Hug fu. Rubber sword fu. Pie fu. Dagger fu. Cutlass fu. Knights roll. Gratuitous sheep. Gratuitous plot twists. Gratuitous snoring princess. Gratuitous jazz hands. (Did I mention the order of singing monks?) Gratuitous tango for two. It is in fact modestly educational. For example, I learned that folks in the Middle Ages would break into song at the drop of a hat, or a hint, or for almost any reason, or for no real reason at all. A 67 on the Vomit Meter. Three stars. Anna Sue says, "It's amazing how entertained you can be if you lower your standards completely." Da'ud Bob says, "Check it out! And watch out for a possible Season Two." Page 10
Words from Others Where did it go? (Using OSCAR) By HL Ivo Blackhawk, May, 2015 (AS 49) So, you turned over your name and arms to the herald, the check went to the treasurer and things are off to the races! Congratulations! You ve done the hard part. Now it s up to the college of heralds to take care of things for you. But a few months go by, and you start to wonder How's it going, anyway? I mean, you haven t heard anything, and a lot can happen in that time, right? Well, here is one way you can find out. 1. Type into your browser oscar.sca.org 2. Now, on the top left corner of the page are 9 blue links. Go to the eighth link from the top (second up from the bottom). It should say Sub Status (note: there is a Log in box, don t worry about it, you don t need to log in for any of this) 3. You re there! This is a text only page of all the submissions current in the system. No computer coding, no fancy script, just good old-fashioned text. You can look for your name here. Hint: press CONTROL and F on most browsers, and it will do a browser-based search for text. Just type in any part of your name, or the blazon for your device, and look through the selected possibilities. 4. When you find it, scroll up or down a little and you ll see lines that say where that bunch of submissions are in the process....in Commentary Period - Submissions are commented on by the kingdom College of Heralds for one month, and then at the Society level, by the Society College of Arms, for three months....being Decided - The SCA College of Arms takes about a month to go through all of the commentary on your submission and then decide if it meets all the rules and requirements of registration....proofreading,,, - The decision has been made and the College of Arms is putting all of the decisions together and proofreading them for the Letter of Acceptance and Returns (LoAR) (this takes about a month). After this, the LoAR will be published online, and notices sent out by to heralds subscribed to the notifications list. The kingdom has an officer whose job is to tell you if your submission was published and what the decision was. If you have any questions about your submission, or if it s not on this list and you think it should be, contact your local herald, the herald helping you with the submission, or the regional herald with your question. Ivo Blackhawk is the Submitter Relations deputy for the college of heralds in Ansteorra. One of his jobs is to help people who don t normally work with heraldry to understand how the submissions process works. Page 11
Congratulations to the first three Masters of Defense Don Miguel Vaello de Villa Joiosa Don Caelan MacRob Don Robin of Gilwell. Page 12
Words from the Chronicler Help!!! Chronicler Lady Sarah Fynn steppes.ansteorra.org My time is almost up as Chronicler. I am in need of a replacement and deputy. I ll be very honest it is not the easiest office and it does take some time. But it is also one of the most rewarding offices in the Barony. If you have any questions, please send me an . Better yet just send me your application! I am looking for someone who can start ASAP so there will be plenty of time to share the job. Happy Reading! Words from the Rapier Marshal Greetings, Congratulations to Don Robin of Gilwell, he was announced as one of the three primer members of the Order of Defense, the newly created rapier peerage. Rapier Marshal Lord Peter Rhys (Sam Finnell) Rapier@ steppes.ansteorra.org Steppes Warlord is almost upon us and will include the return of the five man melee tournament The Iron Star. The Steppes rapier fighters are forming teams to bring this trophy home to the Steppes. Your Steppes rapier fighters and the rest of the kingdom will be fighting in single combat to be the next Steppes Rapier Champion. Rapier practice continues Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. at Tietze Park. Please come and join us. Awards are given. Honor is defended. o()xxxx[{::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::> Page 13
Words from the Youth Combat Marshal It's almost here! (Warlord, of course.) The big 42! And that means lots of fun for everyone. Youth boffer will be fielding fun most of the day on Saturday. The Warlord Youth Champion Tournament is scheduled for 2pm (as always, this may change by the final schedule). We will start the morning with pick up fights and training. Loaner gear will be available. Kids, have your parent with you to get started. We will also authorize fighters as needed and if there are parents or other adults that want to be authorized as marshals, I would love to make that happen. Our kids are growing up. We have a few soon-tobe adult fighters on the horizon. I am hoping to feature the Youth Chivalric division in the tournament (that is youth boffer fighters that are 16 or older, competing in adult armor with adult weapons but not yet authorized for the adult field). Youth Combat Marshal Alexandra Notte Clare (Alex Shahan) Deputy Youth Combat Marshal Viscount Galen of Bristol (Paul Mitchell) sirgalen@gmail.com Youth Rapier Marshal Youth Boffer Marshal Capten Rhys But wait, there's more! Sunday, because we will have so much fun on Saturday, will have round two featuring Youth Rapier! The youth rapier community has seen a recent explosion in interest. Come out and be part of it! The theme of the day is Pirates! Why? Because it's fun! Think of all the great swashbuckling fight scenes in the movies and that is the theme of the day. Ship to ship battle, gang planks and gauntlets to test and develop skills and abilities. Limited loaner gear available, but don't let that stop you. There is much we can get you involved in without all the gear. Kids: bring your parents and come find out about the fun of rapier fighting. Authorizations may also be possible (I'm working on coordinating that). See you all there! Lady Alexnadra Notte Clare, Central Regional and Baronial Youth Marshal, Baronial Youth Rapier Marshal. Capten Rhys ab Idwal, Youth Marshal (Boffer and Rapier). Page 14
Words From the Interim Archery Marshal Greetings, Archery Marshal HL William Black Dragon Aka Ironwym We finished April's Steppes archery practices on a high note with the most archers attending our practices since we started holding our archery practices at the Westlake location. Of those attending three have made the personal commitment to buy their own bows, are acquiring their own archer's kits now, and each has an interest in possibly becoming combat archers. That's just a few of our current novice archers whom I doubt you shall be able to call them the same next year! All archers attending our practices have been great. Our veteran archers & marshals jump in to assist with training our newer comrades to the sport or offer advice to others. Everyone pitches in to move the equipment then put it away when we are done. Looking forward to watching them grow and being joined with more old friends in the future! May is finally here and with May comes Steppes Warlord!! So, we are readying the equipment for range and pick our most favorite and diabolical of archery targets in preparation two full days of Warlord's archery activities. Which shall include our Children's Archery Competition, Royal Rounds, Novice Archery Competition, William Tale Contest, and of course our Steppes Archery Champion Competition! I am really looking forward to this Steppes Warlord with great anticipation (and somewhat of a wicked grin)! In addition to our contests of skill,i would like to resurrect an old tradition for our Steppes Warlord's archery range. Years back we the attending archers would hold a potluck during the mid-day break called an "Archer's Revel" in the hope of helping to unite our Kingdom s archery community by sharing a potluck lunch and each other's good company. So bring something to share with your fellow kingdom archer for our mid-day break at what usually turns out to be a great meet & greet!. We hold our regular scheduled Steppes Archery s on the first and third Sundays of the month 2-6PM at the Westlake Sports Facility, 601 Gross Road (about one mile east of 635) in Mesquite. Come join us for the fun, no experience necessary we shall be glad to show you how to get started in the sport of primitive archery! Finally, just a reminder, the office of Steppes Archery Marshal is open, anyone wishing to submit an application for the office please contact our Baroness, Seneschal or myself. On the job training is offered! Regards, Page 15 Page 12 HL William Black Dragon aka "Ironwyrm" Interim Steppes Archery Marshal & Steppes Archery Champion
from the Next Baroness Words from the Hospitaler Greetings, Steppes! Lady Emelisse de Loupey (Melissa Peterson) Hospitaler ansteorra.org Have you seen new faces at practices and events lately? Are you or anyone you know bringing a newcomer to Warlord? If so, please let me know! I may already have them on my radar, but it *never* hurts to just make sure. The more I know, the more I can help! You can leave a message on the Barony's Facebook group, tag me in a Facebook post, or me at: hospitaler@steppes.ansteorra.org. On that note, I'd be delighted to see as many of you as possible at our next Newcomer's Class! It will be held on May 14th, when we will get a pre-warlord refresher on Local and Kingdom Awards and Recognition. We will meet in conjunction with the next Garland A&S night, and the teacher(s) will be announced soon. The class (which is open to everyone - not just newcomers!) will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, May 14th, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church: 1333 Beltline Rd, Garland, Texas Dress is normal clothes and there is no site fee, although the hosts do ask for a small donation towards the church's electric bill. Please bring note-taking materials (if desired), any snacks you'd like to share, and, of course, your questions! In service, Lady Emelisse de Loupey (Melissa Peterson) Page 16
Words From the Minister of Arts and Science My first act as the new MOAS happened very fast! I had just a few days to pull together a report on what is happening in The Steppes, as far as Arts & Sciences is concerned. And this is what I found out. Cheryl Gooch Bush is working on a Kampfrau at this time. She is also just starting wet wool felting and would like to learn to do that in a period manner, as well as learn to spin. She is also very interested in the science of period animal husbandry and would like to know of anyone does that in SCA. Lorraine D Slaer said that she can spin and would love to learn wet wool felting as well. She is also interested in period animal husbandry. Oz Scott piped in that they would like to see A&S move around a little. We shall have to work on that and report back. Auor Rikarosdottir reported that she has been very busy doing silk painting and sewing basic garb for newcomers. Francisca Moreno is working on putting together a tapestry loom with the help of her hubby and will be learning how to use it. She too would like to know more about animal husbandry. Nathan Jones reported that there is a Laurel in the Midrealm who very much was elevated due to his knowledge of animal husbandry: Master Johan von Metten, mka Marcus Liodolt. We also used to have a mailing list for period animal husbandry, but I think it fell by the wayside at some point. Nathan Jones Also, locally to the Kingdom, Mistress Mari went through a phase about ten years ago when she was doing a lot. Michele Hays (Elfsea MOAS) would like to us get Steppes and Elfsea together, perhaps have an arts-a-thon like a gigantic arts and sciences weekend blowout! It s a great idea to help our A&S communities grow and thrive. Chloe Hinton thought that maybe do that with booths for different crafts where you can stop and learn or teach if that person can. This would be like what we do with Artisans Row that we are hoping to have at Steppes Warlord. Melisa Peterson is working on a pretty Renaissance dress. At this time she is hand-sewing the orange and black dress from Bacchicca s Preaching of John the Baptist from the 1520 s. Capten Rhys is doing woodworking (a clamped front chest) and brewing. Page 17 Page 12
Words from the Minister of Arts and Science continued Michelle Dodd reported that she has acquired an Inkle loom at the Steppes garage sale this last month and is working on 13 lengths of trim. Her new loom has been christened Bear and her other loom is now known as Minnie. John Bishop is very busy doing Brewing, leatherwork, bowyer, fletcher, archery accessories (which covers a great deal of handiwork from string making to basket weaving), woodworker, glassblower and toy maker to name a few skills. Gail Hall is busy doing quilting and needlework. Minister of A and S Johanna Jakobsdottir (Jennie Bainter ) moas@ steppes.ansteorra.org Susan Harkins is working on a protégé band on my inkle loom using Baltic lettering - something I learned at gulf war. Also have the endless stained glass project. Elizabeth Krause is working on a 14th century style dress pattern fitted to me, and then I hope to make some actual dresses from it. I'm also considering *cough*period underpinnings*cough*. She has also been learning some more period music tunes on my plucked psaltery. Jim Trent has been working on map making. Susan Johnson Hill McMahill is doing her wire jewelry, starting to work with metal. Lamp work, and dabbling in weaving, leatherwork. She would love an embroidery class using period materials, or at least information on period appropriate materials and where to get them. Patrick Hausske is still recovering from Gulf Wars and unpacking!!! Being a merchant for the first time, there is quite a lot of things to unpack and straighten out again! He is also starting to learn the bowed psaltery and is learning weaving on the Inkle loom. Jennie Bainter has just completed two Inkle pieces that are being used for the barter of Nallbinding needles from the Kingdom of An Tir. The next project will be a belt on the Inkle loom in a barter for some lovely trim to be used on a kaftan. This is going to the East Kingdom. Also planned is a new Viking t-tunic dress and apron over dress. Respectfully submitted, Johanna Jakobsdottir Page 18
