1 Volume IX, Issue 8 Dallas Chapter, TXSSAR, Founded July 4, 1929 August 2004 President s Message by Tracy Pounders August 14 Meeting L arry Powell, a columnist on local topics for the Dallas Morning News, will be our guest speaker at our August 14 Chapter meeting. For future program suggestions, please feel free to call 1 st VP Tom Whitelock at P Souvenir Photo Edition A Special Independence Day ue to our busy work schedules, the only time that my family and I could go on vacation together included July 4 th. So, this Independence Day we didn t march in a parade, or watch fireworks like we D usually do; we weren t even in the U.S.A. We were floating in international waters out of Galveston on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera. It was strange to be out of the country on the 4 th of July. We kind of take Independence Day for granted, a day some call an annual orgy of patriotism. We missed the parades and the fireworks, the songs and the waving flags. Instead we were on a boat with passengers mostly from Texas, but with a crew from every part of the globe Ireland, Peru, Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Canada, Croatia, Australia, Czech Republic, Scotland and Italy! Marci and I realized that we were celebrating a very special Independence Day with the Melting Pot. The crew had come from all over the world to live in Galveston and work on this ship. Many of them came here to learn American English, the language of international travel, trade, science and math. But all of them had come here for the benefits and the opportunities that America and Americans still give to people from all over the world. During our Independence Day dinner, our United Nations of waiters and wine stewards marched out on the floor, whooping and hollering, waving American flags, and singing God Bless America. And they encouraged the Americans in their care to stand up and sing with them. Marci and I were proud to stand up, hands over our hearts, and sing side-by-side with these people from everywhere on the globe. God Bless America, My Home Sweet Home. rogram Chairman Tom Whitelock orchestrated an evening to remember at the Dallas Chapter s 75th Anniversary Celebration at Hackberry Creek Country Club, on July 10. > > > Registrar s Report: Chapter membership: 300; 8 pending Last Meeting: 44 members, 30 guests Mel McCoy, Registrar Treasurer s Report: Checking & Cash: $ 4, Minuteman Fund: $ 8, Ritchie Fund: $26, Tom Smith, Treasurer 1
