Deanna Johnston The invites everyone to come dance with this season s new dancers at the last dance of the season, April 27. Here s a sneak preview of the ones who were present the evening we took pictures; there are a few others who are missing. Some are brand new to square dancing, others danced long ago and are rediscovering their skills. We re proud of them all! Bob has been working with yet another enthusiastic group in Roundup who we hope will also be joining us on the 27th. The evening will start with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. followed by dancing and a few surprises. We ll wind up at 9 with cake and ice cream. The dance will be designed with the abilities of the new dancers in mind so that they ll be able to dance all evening. Let s give these new folks a proper square dance welcome! 3 April/May 2017 Yellowstone Square Dance Council Grapevine Silhouettes Larry & Susan Sperry, Cuers Sundays: see website for times Kut N Capers Steve Lassiter, Caller Fridays, 6:00 p.m. 3 Silhouettes met twice in March with very nice weather both Sundays. The club has been learning some new Jive and West Coast Swing figures. March was mostly a review month. Most of our club members were at the special dance March 18. The next special spring dance is in Cody on April 21 and 22 with the Strobels. We will do a round workshop that weekend in Cody. Since Easter is April 16 and the Cody dance is April 22, Silhouettes will dance April 9 and 30th. For the summer, Silhouettes will dance Wednesday nights at the Casa Village Rec Hall from 7-9 pm starting May 10. Our prayers and best wishes go to John Hamby on his upcoming knee surgery. We will be leaving Arizona April 1 to return to Billings. Larry & Susan Sperry Our snowbirds are back and we re happy that the gang s all here once again. We had almost two squares for our St. Patrick s Day dance. Our numbers weren t huge but the merriment was! We re happy to announce that we ve been invited to put on a demo dance at the Cody Heritage Museum fundraiser being held in the Cody Auditorium in April. We re very excited to have been invited and we ve been practicing up a storm. We hope you re all polishing up your dancing shoes and getting ready for our Spring Fling on April 21 and 22. Check out the schedule in our brochure in or on the squaredancemontana website. We ll have Lynn and Judy on squares and Larry and Susan on rounds, so you know the dancing will be outstanding. Time really does fly when you re having fun! The returning snowbirds and friendlier road conditions have resulted in a fuller dance floor to help us go out with a bang. Thanks to all who helped make this season a success. We especially appreciate Lynn and Bob for all the thought and skill they put into the DBD (dance by definition) sessions. We ve learned a lot and gained a better understanding of one of our favorite activities. And as always, thanks to all our dancers from near and far, as well as those who brought snacks and helped with cleanup. All in all, it s been a wonderful season. Several mainstream dancers have expressed an interest in learning plus, so we look forward to even more friendly faces next season. Have a great summer, see you in the fall! Yellowstone Square Dance Council Grapevine 5 Bob Hogemark, Caller Thursday evenings 6:30-9:00 Mainstream, Metra Park Our dancing season is winding down fast with only a month left in our club dance season and beginner classes. It s always amazing to see the progression of the beginners from the beginning to the last class. We hope that all the new dancers will join us in the fall when we resume our dancing. It will be nice to have our snowbirds back dancing with us in April after escaping to the south for the winter. They picked a good year to be gone! Our last scheduled dance will be on April 27 and we are planning to have somewhat of a party. We will begin at 6:30 with a potluck meal. The rest of the night will be dancing, including dances that the new dancers can do. They will be able to dance with all of us until our dance is over at 9 pm. There will be some entertainment provided during the evening as well so you don t want to miss this one! We would like to thank Byron and Lorraine for doing the clean up after each dance. It s nice to come to and have the place clean and ready for dancing. Thank you, dancers who bring snacks and treats as well. We hope you all continue to attend the dances that are available in other communities. Many of those folks come to ours and we encourage you to attend theirs, too. Square dance, contradance and couples dance all have a shared history going back to the middle ages. Court dances were called Stately dances and eventually evolved into what we know as ballet. But then there were dances for the country folk. The French version of country dance was Contredanse. When country folk from Europe came to America they brought with them their fiddles and flutes and yes, country dance. Modern square dance, contradance and couples dance are the American descendants of those early patterns. Join us April 14th and contradance to the tunes of Bebe LeBoeuf and calling by Bev Young. Contradance Billings is off to a great start. We welcome your ideas on how to make it even better as we grow. Sign up at the next dance if you d like to help shape our future. With all the DBD-A this season, it s a wonder none of us ended up DOA. We worked hard, played hard and laughed hard. When the decline in A-level dancers put an end to the A clubs a few years back, it looked like we d only be left with fond memories. So we absolutely appreciate our Mondays together and all the fun we have, no matter how confused we may be at times. So a big thanks to Bob and to our one and one-half squares of dancers. Thanks to our wonderful dancers...those who helped set up, clean up and fill up (i.e., snacks!), those who travel considerable distances to support our dances and those nearby who brave weather and parking lot challenges several times a week just because dancing is worth it all. Thank you to the new dancers who improve steadily from one week to the next and to the angels who help keep the fun flowing and any frustration at bay. Have a great summer everyone, and come back safely to us in October! Wardrobe Alert Do you have any square dance apparel with which you re ready to part? Please bring your items to and we ll hang them on a free rack. New dancers may try them out if they re curious and take them home if they like them; seasoned dancers will have a chance to change out or add to their collections. A few wrinkles are okay, but we do ask that the items be clean and in good repair. Thank you!
