1 Big Sky News March 2017 Boots & Calico Saturdays February has been an interesting month for us. We had Barry Bartlette calling for our Hawaiian Luau dance. We had 3 squares and lots of floral attire. Lots of fun! The next 2 dances we had Eddie Fields of Salmon, Idaho as our guest caller. We had 2+ squares brave the biting cold but Eddie kept us warmed up and moving! The month of March features Ray on the 4 th, the 11 th and the St. Pats dance on the 18th, and Barry will close out the month on the 25th. March caller 7 pm 7:30 9:30 4th Ray Plus Mainstream 11 th Ray Rounds Mainstream w/ plus tip 18 th Ray Plus Mainsteam St Pats Dance...wearin of the green! 25 th Barry Rounds Mainstream w/ plus tip ***Recycle Clothes Sale!*** The big event in March is Saturday the 25th our annual RECYCLE CLOTHES SALE CLOTHES THAT ALREADY KNOW HOW TO SWING! We always have racks and racks of mens and womens clothes, tables of petty skirts and shoes etc!! It s a sight to see! More info- Dee Moenich Laurie We dance at the Golden Age Center at 5th & Baker streets in Hamilton Yellowstone Square Dance Council Ann Hindley, reporter Better road conditions are allowing us to once again enjoy the company of Wyoming and out of town Montana dancers. The snow is rapidly melting into puddles and lakes; dirty cars abound throughout town. We no longer have to navigate a maze of snow piles in the parking lot to reach Cedar Hall. Spring must be coming! Another sign of spring: the snowbirds and winter travelers are coming back. Welcome back to Steve and Shea, Barbara and Roger. It s good to see you all, we missed you. Shea finally got the go-ahead to dance again after back surgery. Yay! Eileen and Paul are also back from Seattle where Eileen underwent stem cell therapy. Paul is dancing with us again but it will be a while for Eileen. Our prayers and best wishes continue for her recovery. More prayers and wishes go to Judy Strobel on her eye surgery. Good to have Hunter back, too. He s one busy fellow but he joins us when he can. It s been a long spell between the monthly contra dances, from January 6 to February 17. March 24 will be the next contra. Then on March 18 is the Checkerboard Squares Spring Dance with Lynn and Judy Strobel. What a great week for dancing that will be; join us if you can. As seems to be the rule, there has been some attrition in the number of new dancers, but we still see three to four squares on Thursday nights. The new folks who have continued are very enthusiastic and are a real asset to our dance community. Once they re comfortable with a number of calls, we ll alternate easy and full-program tips so they ll be able to dance all evening. With the progress they re making, that should be happening soon. Thank you Bob for making learning so much fun! Remember to check our website, for dance schedules and please join us when you re in the area

APRIL 22 Saturday Spring Fling CALLER DARIN KEITH Nampa, Idaho PHONE: Glen and Leola Glen Leola TO SIGN UP FOR BIG SKY NEWS LETTER. squaredancemt@gmail.com Adam Christman, Square Dance Caller Adam has been around square dancing all his life. In fact He learned to walk at a state square dance festival. At the age of 3 Adam's club caller gave him the singing call "Never The Less" on Rhythm Records. The caller had told him if he learned it he would be able to perform the song at the club's campout weekend. So, he did just that and became a "One Record Caller" for a while. Ever since then Adam has been studying and learning the art of Square Dance Calling. At age 6 Adam called his song for the first time at a Montana State Square Dance Festival. The MC insisted on giving him the cue sheet, but at that time he could not yet read, so he had to decline. In 2003 he started calling and teaching for his first club in Plains, MT, which was a 90 mile trip one way from where he lived in Kalispell. The Montana Mavericks of Plains, MT still boast Adam Christman their Club caller. In 2013, Adam became one of the newest members of the Rhythm Records square dance label. Rhythm is one of the top square dance labels in the world. Adam and his wife, Samantha, were married in May of 2015 in Spokane, WA. With a big celebration of family and friends they started the journey together that is life. Adam & Samantha currently reside in Spokane, WA where he calls for 5 clubs. Adam Christman Leola & Glen Tusler Helena Last Chance Square Dance is proud to say our square dance caller is Glen Tusler. He started calling for Lost Corners Club 40 years ago and he says square dance calling is a science as well as exercise along

4 with being an intellectual art form. Dancers must learn team work along with learning all the intricacies of the calls. Glen Tusler is now a retired teacher and principal after working 35 years in the Helena School System. Many years ago Glen and Leola decided to take their love of ballroom dancing to a different level. So, with 3 little girls in tow they went square dancing with the Lost Corners Club. In the 1960s it was a custom to offer the mike to a dancer and ask him to call a tip. Since Glen loved to sing, he was a natural at calling dances. When the Club lost their caller, Glen Tusler became Helena s home town caller. He has started 33 mainstream groups to square dance, both in Butte and Helena, Montana. In 1992 Glen began teaching and cuing round dancing. The Helena area square and round dancers benefit highly from Glens love of teaching! Come dance with us! We need to have each club make sure their dancers get a copy. There being no further new business the meeting was adjourned at 4:29 pm. Next meeting will be held in Great Falls, May Karyn Hamilton, Karyn Hamilton Secretary, Montana State Square & Round Association. MONTANA MAVERICKS Plains Darlene Jolly The MONTANA MAVERICKS Febuary dance had 15 dancers in very nasty weather. All were club members from close around the area. Adam Christman was scheduled to call & Lorrie Lane to cue the dance. Mother Nature had other ideas. The weather was so nasty in Spokane & on the way here that Adam could not get here. Lorrie had come the night before to teach our class & spent the night locally, so we bribed her (bribe payment yet to come) to call our dance, so she called & cued. A woman of many talents & we thank her profusely. It was a party level dance & it would have been a shame to cancel on our new dancers on their first dance. There were a few mistakes, but lots of laughter & good times so Thanks again Lorrie!! We had a pizza party at the local ice cream shop Ripples before the dance. 10 of us enjoyed great pizza & ice cream. They are a take & bake shop, but kindly agree to cook pizzas for us. We appreciate it. March dance features a potluck at 6pm at the bank before the dance. During the dance we ll have a silent auction. We d love to have you join us. Adam Christman will call & Lorrie lane will cue. Come join us any time you are in the area. Any questions contact Darlene at Prairie Stars, Miles City We have gotten a little reprieve from the weather and what a welcome change. It is nice to travel and dance when it is above zero and the roads are dry. Our dancer attendance has been holding up quite well. We have consistently had more than two squares, and for us, that is wonderful. We held our annual Forsyth Plus day on January 28 th with a workshop in the afternoon, a great supper cooked by our own dancers, Rita and Dan Watson, and then a plus dance at night. We wrapped up at 9:00 p.m. so those traveling could get home before it got too late. We had visiting dancers from Spearfish, South Dakota, Powell and Clark, Wyoming, Ryegate, Shepherd, and Billings, as well as our own plus dancers from Colstrip, Forsyth, and Miles City. We have been having this dance on the 3 rd or 4 th Saturday in January, so put it on your calendar for 2018 if it is something that appeals to you. Exact date will be determined this coming fall. Our March dances are set for the 9 th, 16 th, 23 rd, and 30 th. We may have to cancel one of those dates, so please call ahead if you might be travelling to dance with us. In April we have dances scheduled on the 6 th, 20 th, and 27 th. All of these dance dates are subject to change if the roads or weather don t cooperate. Enjoy spring and we hope to see you across the square soon. Lynn and Judy Strobel P.O. Box 1278 Miles City, MT Cell strobell@midrivers.com

Because of illness, body parts being replaced, and very cold weather, attendance has been down lately, but now's the time to get our dancing shoes polished up again for the coming fun! Barry will be in Arazona until March 19 th so it would be a good idea to check before the March 20 th dance. MARK YOUR CALENDARS MAR 20, Mon - Lessons 6:30-8:00.
