1 EDITION NINE 2014/2015 Season From the President Jim Maxwell The Dolphins are having a very successful season. The Club has finished fourth in the Club Championship, which is our highest finish since 2005/06. First Grade has continued it s strong showing with outstanding wins over Northern Districts, Fairfield and Hawkesbury to finish in fourth place ahead of the finals series. Third Grade won the minor premiership with Seconds, Fourths and Fifths on the fringe of finals contention. First Grade also qualified for the semi finals of the limited overs competition with a win over Mosman, but lost to Manly in the semi-final at Manly Oval. Your committee has been busy arranging sponsors for 2015/16, please put your hand up if you can help or guide us towards potential new business partnerships. On March 10th I took Geoff Boycott up to the Tank for a nostalgic return to the Club that he played so impressively for in Geoff still holds the record for the most 1st Grade runs in a season notching up 1060 at an average of 165. He was impressed with the quality of the Grandstand and caught up with Michael Bevan who played for Yorkshire during his diverse and prolific career of runscoring. So get ready for the Finals series and support the Dolphins charge towards a premiership finish. These results have been underpinned by the commitment of the players and the club coaching led by Michael Bevan. A standout performance of several was Peter Nevill s undefeated 137 not out against Fairfield, rising to the challenge of Doug Bollinger and Gurinder Sandhu s pace bowling which resulted in a three wicket victory. Peter then went to Hobart and made 235 for NSW, the highest score by a wicketkeeper in Sheffield Shield Cricket. In junior cricket four teams reached Grand Finals and won all those matches, so congratulations to those sides. On March 28th the Junior Committee will be having a strategy session to plan for the next season. 1
2 From the COACH Michael Bevan As the last round has finished I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts for what has been a successful season. In particular congrats to 3 s for being minor premiers and 1 s and PG s for making the finals. Commiserations to 2 s, 4 s and 5 s on narrowingly missing out but playing well non the less throughout the season. However, most importantly we have improved the standard of our cricket as a club in terms of performance, trainings and attitude which is really satisfying for me personally and I hope it is the same for every player. Even our last training session last week I thought was one of our best in terms of practice habits and intensity so it was really pleasing to see. We have shown we are more than capable of mixing it with the top clubs, winning tight matches and enjoying what it takes to win matches. I believe there are limitations on how much impact a head coach can have with 7 teams and 3 different competitions so thanks too all those that have helped out including the other coaches, net captains, committee, captains. Hope everyone enjoys their off season and good luck to 1 s and 3 s in their finals endeavours. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to NSW and 1st Grade Keeper/Batsmen Peter Nevill who recently became engaged to Samantha Nelson. Congratulations to our Club Conditioner and former player Wayne Geber who also recently became engaged to Helena Haddad. 3 ROUNDS WRAP UP The Dolphins have finished the season in fourth place in the Club Championship after a strong finish to the back end of the season, including another clean sweep against Fairfield and a win in the top four Grades against Hawkesbury. The rounds against Northern Districts, Sydney and Bankstown produced more wins than losses. 1st & 3rd Grade will advance to the finals which commence this Saturday and Sunday. 1st Grade have had a fruitful back end to the regular season finishing in 4th place with wins against Fairfield, Northern Districts and Hawkesbury and a draw against Sydney. There have been numerous highlights including a match winning unbeaten 138* from Peter Nevill as Easts chased down 292 against a Fairfield attack which included Doug Bollinger and Gurinder Sandhu. The next round against Northern Districts at Waverley produced an extraordinary game where Easts were bowled out for 59. Northern Districts were then skittled out for 52 as Jacob Taucher collected 7/21. The game then went down to the wire with an outright result looming on the second day with Easts falling a wicket short. A disappointing 85 run loss to Sydney hindered second grades semi-final chances, but they bounced back with a 115 run win against Hawkesbury where Ben Bryant 65, Will Eaton 63 and Michael Maclennan 62 helped post 272. Nick Kershaw 5/30 and Nathan Rowe 3/36 were the chief destroyers as the Hawks were bundled out. In the final regular game of the season Easts were playing for a place in the finals. Batting first Easts were only able to muster 85. In reply Easts had Bankstown 6-49 due to the efforts of Jacob Taucher 3-21 and Nick Kershaw Unfortunately Bankstown fell over the line which effectively ended 2nd Grade s season despite their gallant efforts. Tas Yazdani also collected 4/42 in this match. Easts then amassed 367 against Northern Districts with Greg Clarence 148 and Adam Ezekiel 139 sharing a 194 run partnership for the 6th wicket. Shane Devoy took 4/146 as Easts won by 7 runs in the last over of the game. Runs then flowed from the bat of Ian Moran 142 and Angus Robson 113 as Easts scored 7/338 against Sydney. Unfortunately Easts couldn t collect the last wicket as Sydney held on for a draw with Ian Moran taking 3/49 to complete a brilliant all round game. Easts then accounted for Hawkesbury by 3 wickets in a one day fixture with Jacob Taucher 3/21 and Daniel Rootes 3/14 in the wickets. Bankstown got up with 10 balls remaining to win by 4 wickets in the final regular game of the season after Matt Condon 65 and Ian Moran 59 helped Easts post nd Grade have had just the two losses since round 10 and completed the regular season in 8th place. Matt Yiend 70, and Adam Ezekiel 57 helped Easts to 8/244 against Fairfield Udit Mehta took 4/40 in the Lions total of rd Grade have won the Minor Premiership with just one loss. A dominant 8 wicket win against Fairfield where Will Eaton took 4/34 was followed by a 112 run win against Northern Districts after Ben Bryant 102* bought up his ton off the second last ball of the day. Easts declared overnight just 3 wickets down and then skittled the Rangers for 97 with Matt Sarkies taking his maiden Grade 5 wicket haul with 5/36. In the next round, Easts accounted for Sydney by 5 wickets in a rain reduced 37 over a side match after Harry Brooks took 4/24. Round 14 produced a tense tussle with Hawkesbury as 1st place took on 3rd. Easts scored 184 thanks to 57 from Prinya Kham. A determined Easts outfit then restricted Hawkesbury to 166 in a see-sawing second day as Angus Palmer 4/41 and Matt Sarkies 4/35 ensured Easts would stay at the top of the ladder. A win in the final match would secure a minor premiership for 3rd Grade and Easts never allowed Bankstown a sniff after posting on a low and lifeless wicket. Easts were eventual winners by 54 runs with wickets being shared between all bowlers. 3
4 4th Grade have finished the season in 7th place In round 11 Easts routed Fairfield for a miserly 33 to win by 180 runs after Matt Tupper 5/13 and Max Abbott 4/18 ripped through the opposition. A disappointing result against Northern Districts jeopardised the season as Easts failed to chase down 167 after Steve Lewis took 3/41. A tense 13 run victory against Sydney after defending 113 where Prinya Kham scored 52 got the season back on track. Matt Tupper took 4/28. A dominant victory followed against Hawkesbury as Easts got up by 87 runs thanks to 109* from Chris Florence, while Tim Brown 5/32 and David Dunne 3/28 were in the wickets in Hawkesbury s innings. In the final round other matches needed to go Easts way. Despite a dominant win with a bonus point, it wasn t enough for Easts after Bankstown were bowled out for 102 with David Dunne 4-24 and Matt Tupper 3-21 being the main wicket takers. Easts finished equal 6th on points (57), but a 0.17 difference on the quotient denied them a finals appearance. 4th Grade lost just the four matches during the season which was the same amount as last season where they won the minor premiership. Captain Tim Brown finished the season on 399 career Grade wickets for Easts. 5th Grade finished the regular season in 8th place. A 48 run win against Fairfield where Angas Macdonald took 3/26 was followed by a heart breaking 1 wicket loss to Northern Districts where Max Abbott completed a hat trick in taking his 200th wicket for the club. Easts pushed for an outright but the match finished with the Rangers taking first innings points. A 52 run win against Sydney where Angas Macdonald again contributed scoring 56 which helped Easts get to 9/180. Captain George Black then returned the figures of 4/35 as Easts restricted the Tigers to 128. A 5 wicket loss to Hawkesbury unfortunately ended 5th Grades finals chances as Easts were bowled out for 115. The season was rounded off with a win with a bonus point against Bankstown after Matt Coles 63 not out and Patrick Turk 63 helped Easts amass Matt Coles completed a good all round game taking 3-30 as the opposition were never in the hunt. 1st Grade limited overs Easts finished the One Day part of the regular season in 3rd place. A strong performance in the Qualifying Final against Mosman progressed Easts to the Semi Final where they went down to a strong Manly outfit at Manly Oval. In the Qualifying Final Easts scored 218 thanks to 75 from Ian Moran. Mosman were never in the hunt only making 163 with Shane Devoy taking 4-26 on a slow Waverley wicket. In the Semi Final, Easts restricted Manly to 7/230 with Daniel Rootes, Sandy Rogers and Jacob Taucher each claiming 2 wickets. Rain affected Easts innings but they were always behind losing regular wickets when the rain arrived, going down under Duckworth-Lewis calculations. 5 JUNIOR DOLPHINS What a weekend for the Easts Junior Dolphins winning all the Grand Finals they participated in. On Saturday Easts Under 10 Colts Red made 6/98 off their 25 overs and defeated Randwick Renegades who could only reach 93 in a very tight finish. The Under 12 Div 1 Easts Maroons defeated Maccabi who were all out for 100 with a 6/101 off 34.2 in another nail bitter. Special mentions for Sam Lodge who took 3/6 off 5 over including 1 maiden and Archie Cornell for a 27no. Sam Oliver also tool one catch and effected runouts to bring the Maroons home. The Dolphins cleaned up in the Under 14s with Division 2 Greens winning 6/98 to Randwick Thunders 94. Hamish Dunstan top scored with 23 no and James Beasley taking 6/16 off 6 overs. Oliver Rinder took an incredible 4 catches. In Division 1 Easts Dynamite held Randwick Thunder to 91 to claim victory at 3/94 off 34.2 overs. Jack Willis shone with 36 no and 3/11 off 5 including 1 maiden. Jackson Irwin took 3 catches. Winning 4 of the 6 age groups contested is a terrific result and a HUGE congratulations goes to the boys, their coach s and families!! Congratulations to all the teams who made the final series this year and particularly to the Under 10 Colts Reds, Under 12 Division 2 Maroons, Under 14 Division 2 Greens and Under 14 Division 1 Dynamite who are playing Grand Final this weekend. Congratulations also goes to all members of the Under 10 Mods Masterblasters who have knocked up 32 straight wins over 2 seasons. Fantastic effort boys!! Congratulations as well to Reid McNamara from The Under 12 Division 1 Firecrackers who took the only Easts Hat trick of the season and 5 for 11 off 4.4 overs including 2 maidens What an excellent effort Reid! Only one other player took 5 wickets in a match with Jordan Behr from the Under 14 Division 1 Marauders taking 5 for 9 off 6 overs including 1 maiden. Fabulous bowling boys! In other news Freddy Walton, Tom Bell-Bird, Max Dixon, Asher Learmonth and Max Glen from our Under 12 Division 1 teams have been selected in the NSW CIS Primary Schools Team 2015 well done boys! Other highlights of the year was the involvement with Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW and the Sydney 6ers which saw many of our juniors especially our T20 Blast players - participate in on-ground activities at major matches including Australia v India in the first Test at the SCG. It was also fantastic to see the Easts Juniors attendance at the Big Bash league games especially our own ESCC event for Nic Maddinson s Birthday and Easts been flag bearers in the ICC World Cup games played at the SCG. 5
6 Overall, what a great year! Thanks to all of our coach s and managers who have run training, attended games, and battled the batting orders every week our Club would not operate without you. Thanks too to all our dedicated Easts parents who have ferried their (often multiple) children to and from training, games, events, rehearsals etc week in and week out to foster their children s love of the great game of cricket. In an era where time is a rare commodity and cricket is sometimes a long game, your commitment is very much valued. And finally to the Junior Committee who have worked hard all year to make the season happen and to continually look for improvements that we can make as a Club to improve the game experience for our kids a huge thank you. With Presentation Day just around the corner, I hope I will see you all at Waverley Oval on 22nd March at to celebrate the end of another great season. Leone McEntee Junior Coordinator MILO IN2CRICKET With the last Milo IN2 Cricket finishing up last Saturday, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who contributed significantly to the success of the program. I would also like to thank all the grade teams for coaching each week prior to your games at various venues. Without the volunteers and grade players we would not be able to cater for the 180+ registrations that we had this year. A special mention to Andrew Hollis, Simon Thorp, Paul McGivern and Will Roberts for coordinating the U4 U7 age groups. Liz Jackson In2cricket Coordinator 6
