1) FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK The Inter-Schools Athletics Meeting took place last Friday. The spirit and energy shown by both the cheerleading and athletes was of a very high standard and I was very proud of our Montie family. Thank you to all our staff, learners and parents for your part in this year s athletics meeting. Some of our athletes have been chosen to take part in the Northern Zonals. We wish them well in their respective disciplines. There are 29 school days remaining this Term and we encourage our pupils to make every effort with their studies and projects. Our teachers are continuing to gather marks from these tests and projects to form the basis of the academic results for Term 1. We encourage our pupils to make every effort during the remaining part of this term. SUMMER SPORT PHOTOS The Summer Sport Photos will take place on Tuesday, 21 February Learners must please wear their full team kit. 2) PAST PUPIL S FUNCTION Fairmont High School held their long overdue Past Pupil s function last night. It was very heartwarming to see the number of past pupil s attending the Cheese and Wine evening where our new Principal, Mr Leon Erasmus, spoke about his vision for the Past Pupils. Thank you to those who could make it. We look forward to seeing you and more of our Past Pupils again at future events s

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from the parent requesting this. No s! Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies. If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate. PLEASE NOTE! All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments. All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a letter from the parent and the relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed (not test days) is also required. No allowances will be made for pupils missing formal assessments due to holiday arrangements. Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department. Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor s certificate will be required.

7) MEDIA RELEASE : WATER USAGE WATER CRISIS: CITY LOWERS WATER USAGE TARGETS AS DAM LEVELS DECLINE As at today, 13 February 2017, dam levels have dropped to 36,2,%, which is 1,2% down from a week ago. With the last 10% of a dam s water not being usable, dam levels are effectively at 26,2%. The latest actual consumption is 825 million litres of collective use per day. The City of Cape Town has now lowered its water consumption target from 800 million litres to 700 million litres for collective water usage per day. If we are to reduce the consumption to 700 million litres of collective use per day, and at the current draw-down rate on dams, we could be looking at approximately 135 days of useable water left. While the City thanks all of its great water-saving residents and businesses across the metro, water consumption must be lowered immediately. Cape Town is in a water-scarce region and at all times, but especially during this water crisis, we need to use water sparingly. Level 3b water restrictions, which limit the use of potable water for non-essential purposes, are in place. The City has adjusted its target downwards from 800 million litres per day of collective use to 700 million litres per day of collective use. In December 2016, the target of 800 million litres per day was set and this was subject to seasonal variations which, among others, affect the evaporation rate of dams. These variations have caused us to lower the target now. In addition, we have struggled to meet the previous target and we will therefore need a monumental effort to reduce consumption further and to meet a target that is one hundred million litres lower, said the City s Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille. The City is one of the users of the Western Cape Water Supply System. Annually the metro uses about 65% of the water taken from the system, but currently while agriculture is still irrigating, the metro accounts for 40% of the use. The City will intensify its engagements with the National Department of Water and Sanitation, who is the custodian of water resources and who is responsible for water supply. Restrictions must be adhered to as they were contemplated to be introduced during the design of the supply system as a component of the operating rules. This is the philosophy that has been adopted by the National Department in the design and operation of the Western Cape System to supply the municipalities. In a drought situation, lowering consumption remains the most important intervention that can be made. The implementation of restrictions is a normal practice in water supply management and it is introduced during drought events as a means to trim the demand to the available supply. In a system with 97% to 98% assurance of supply which is what we have, it means that in two to three years out of a hundred, there will not be sufficient water to meet the normal demand. Our system is designed and modelled on the fact that the operating rule for drought years is to introduce the necessary levels of restriction to limit the demand in order to ensure sustainable supply, said the City s Mayoral Committee Member for Informal Settlements, Water and Waste Services; and Energy, Councillor, Xanthea Limberg. Warning notices have also been issued in the rates bills of some of the metro s highest use domestic, commercial and government department water users in an effort to further reduce consumption. According to the January 2017 consumption, the highest water users are all using far above litres of water per month, while out of the almost one million customers that the City supplies with water, most households are using an average of approximately litres per month or less. Those who will not reduce their consumption voluntarily will increasingly be forced to reduce consumption. The installation of water management devices would assist households, businesses and other users with more efficiently managing their water consumption and this would result in financial savings as well, said Councillor Limberg. Regular enforcement operations remain in place in addition to the targeted engagements with these top highest water users. Furthermore, the City continues its long-term water infrastructure investment programme, the roll-out of its leak and pressure management programmes, and investigation into alternative sources of water.
Mayor De Lille, as well as the City s Deputy Executive Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, continue a regime of personally calling businesses, hotels and government departments unannounced to check up on their water use. Later during this week, Mayor De Lille and her shadow mayors (area-based mayoral committee members) will start engaging personally with some of the high water users that have been identified through their water accounts and January 2017 consumption. Residents can contact the City via to water.restrictions@capetown.gov.za for queries or to report contraventions (evidence should be provided to assist the City s enforcement efforts) or they can send an SMS to For further information, residents should please visit the water restrictions page on the City s website: Issued by: Media Office, City of Cape Town Media enquiries: Councillor Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Informal Settlements, Water and Waste Services; and Energy, City of Cape Town, Tel: or Cell: , Xanthea.limberg@capetown.gov.za (please always copy media.account@capetown.gov.za) Disclaimer: This (including attachments) is subject to the disclaimer published at: Please read the disclaimer before opening any attachment or taking any other action in terms of this . Parents are encouraged to be aware of the symptoms and treatment. WARNING SIGNS OF HEAD LICE INFESTATION Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are wingless insects that live on the skin covering the scalp. These insects attach their eggs to the ends of the hair shaft and make it their breeding ground. They usually live about 28 days, but can multiply speedily, laying over 9-10 eggs per day. Since these parasitic insects are highly contagious and very difficult to kill, early detection can help curtail the impact of the infection.
Persistent itching on the scalp is one of the first noticeable signs of infection caused by an allergy to lice bites. As the lice feeding of your scalp, suck the blood, their feces (saliva) trigger an allergic reaction. Depending on your child s sensitive skin, the itching can take some time to start. In a lot of children, itching might start after a few weeks. Appearance of lice eggs, also called nits, is a common sign of lice infesting in the head. Nits are tiny yellow, tan empty shells glued to your hair. These can be easily wrongly taken as flakes of dry skin. What happens is that the lice adult finds a site (warm temperature) close to the scalp to hatch their eggs. Within 2 weeks, the eggs develop into adult lice. So, as and when you start noticing little dots which appear like dandruff, do your best to brush them off. If they remain glued, possibilities are you have lice nits. One lice starts residing in the skin of a person, it bites and feeds on the scalp. Due to this incessant itching can start, which can further breakdown the skin and cause open sores. What further contributes to the infections is constant bleeding as well as soiled fingers. As the child scratches the head continuously, the chances of sores and crusting increase. Apart from this, fluid may ooze out of the area which gets infected. Examining the scalp of your child can reveal any crusting or scabs before any lice actually infect the area. In case your child has longer hair, look for redness or swelling on the neck as lice may start developing from there itself. The chances of getting afflicted by lice become more once any of your family members gets infected. Though you may not get caught and contained too quickly, but there are big possibilities of getting lice in your head if one of your family members gets suspected. Check everyone s scalp and make sure the problem gets caught immediately. Use of topical ointments and good shampoos can help get rid of lice problem. In case the condition persists for a longer period, a visit to a doctor is a must. Most children get infected by lice in schools as the population is quite high. That is the reason why most of the teachers are on a lookout for cases of lice infestation. So, in case you get a notice from your child s school regarding the creepy insects, don t take it lightly and take all the required steps to solve the problem. HOW TO GET RID OF HEAD LICE Chill out: First things first: Take a deep breath and don't freak out if your child has head lice. Sure, they're gross (just talking about them can make your head itch), but they're not actually harmful to health. It's best to approach lice as a war on many fronts: You need to use a variety of techniques to kill not only adult lice, but also their tiny eggs (called nits), which are glued to the hair shaft. The nits can survive treatments that kill the adults and vice versa. (These bugs have evolved over a millennium to live in hair, so they're tricky). It's best to steel yourself for weeks or months of vigilance since lice can reappear due to repeated exposure or a missed nit. What doesn't help is panic. Nitpicking and combing: The gold standard for head lice is removal, you'll need to do this in conjunction with almost all other treatments. First you comb hair section by section with a special comb (you can buy one at the drugstore) to remove lice and nits. Years ago Albano-Krosche spent hours extracting nits by hand from her kids' hair. These days, she wields a fined-toothed metal comb. "It's so much quicker and cleaner and neater," she said. After a comb-through, she uses a magnification light to find and pick out any strays. "No matter what kind of (lice-killing) product you use, the combing it the key," she said. You cannot get rid of lice until you've picked every last egg, she noted. In a study, hot-air methods proved highly effective in killing nits, but less so in eradicating live lice. An oldfashioned bonnet dryer killed nearly 89% of nits but just 10% of lice, while a blow dryer using direct heat got rid of nearly 98% of nits and 55% of lice. So use a hair dryer on freshly washed hair to increase your chance of eradicating the lice.
It's very little to do with the environment; it's more about cleaning the head. That's because head lice can only live a day or two off the scalp, and they can't hop or fly. Plus, their eggs get cemented to the hair. So you don't need to sterilize the entire house. To prevent re-infection, clean items that have been in recent contact with the infected family members' heads. Wash bedding, caps, scarves and towels in hot water, and dry on a hot setting. Soak combs and brushes in very hot, soapy hot water. Vacuum floors, pillows, upholstered furniture and car seats. Stow non-washables - treasured stuffed animal, for example - in a sealed bag for 2 weeks. Lice are just as happy to invade a squeaky clean head as a dirty one, so frequent washing is no guarantee of preventing an infestation. The best advice is to avoid head-to-head contact. And don't make it easy for them to crawl from one head to the next. Keep long hair in a tight ponytail or braid. Other tips: Don't share combs, brushes, barrettes, hats, scarves or pillows. Albano-Krosche suggests adding a couple drops of an essential oil, such as tea tree oil, to your own grooming products to ward off the bugs. 13) HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BEAUTIFUL DOBERMAN?
