1 CIRCULAR NO April 2014 Dear Parents THERE S NO WRONG TIME TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. by Dalton McGuinty Artwork titled Identity by Casey Bosman of Grade 11
2 1) ACADEMICS Four more school weeks remain before examinations commence. Teachers are busy finalizing School Based Assessment exercises and completing classroom work in the time that remains. It is a busy time for all and I ask our pupils to manage their time well so that they can be properly prepared for the exams. 2) COUNSELLOR S CORNER Respect Value Focus of the week. When talking about values, Respect is a word that is always mentioned. It seems selfexplanatory and many people and learners think that they do show respect to others, their school uniform, their parents, property, etc. What is respect: Respect is having regard for someone else, and treating them with esteem. This is sometimes easily said, but difficult to do. Respecting someone goes beyond just acknowledging them; it is accepting all of who they are; whether you like them or not, agree with them or not, enjoy their company or not. Respect is a choice we make every time we connect with another individual. To hold another person s feelings, emotions and sense of self in our hands, is a big responsibility. Therefore saying we have respect goes beyond acknowledgement; it is a choice and deliberate act of taking someone else into account. 3) MATRIC FOCUS GUIDELINE TO TEACHING TIME FOR MATRICS - 64 DAYS Matrics writing exams JANUARY FEBRUARY (0 Days) MARCH (0 Days) Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr APRIL (0 Days) MAY (20 Days) JUNE (2 Days) Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr JULY (9 Days) AUGUST (21 Days) SEPTEMBER (2 Days) Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr Mo Tu We Th Fr

A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required. Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department. 7 11) LIBRARIAN S CHOICE CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF by NELSON MANDELA In real life we deal, not with gods, but with ordinary humans like ourselves: men and women who are full of contradictions, who are stable and fickle, strong and weak, famous and infamous. Nelson Mandela Conversations With Myself gives readers access to the private man behind the public figure: from letters written in the darkest hours of Mandela s twentyseven years of imprisonment to the draft of an unfinished sequel to Long Walk to Freedom. Here he is making notes and even doodling during meetings, or recording troubled dreams on the desk calendar of his cell on Robben Island; writing journals while on the run during the anti-apartheid struggles of the early 1960 s, or conversing with friends in almost seventy hours of recorded conversations. In these pages he is neither icon nor a saint; here he is like you and me. An intimate journey from the first stirrings of his political conscience to his galvanizing role on the world stage, Conversations With Myself is a rare chance to spend time with Nelson Mandela the man, in his own voice: direct, clear, private. 12) CROSS COUNTRY EXCELS Twelve Fairmont athletes took part in the second zonal trial at Malibu High School on Wednesday, 24 April, with Nina Dunleavy being placed first in the Girls U15 heat. Nina Dunleavy on achieving 1 st place TOP POSITIONS U15 Girls Nina Dunleavy 1 st U16 Boys Samuel van der Merwe 2 nd U17 Girls Carmen van der Merwe 3 rd U19 Girls Christine de Kock 4 th We are extremely proud of the placings of all the other Monties who participated, considering that there are up to 100 athletes per race!

11 14) BOYS HOCKEY RESULTS Wednesday, 23 April : 1 st Team vs Crawford (Lone Hill, Johannesburg) The visitors looked good until Kyle Friester scored a field goal off the Goalkeepers pads after 10 minutes. They responded by a series of concerted attacks on our goal, but Matthew Martins showed why he is the South African U18 keeper by nonchalantly clearing the ball off their hockey sticks. Thereafter, the Fairmont 1 st team machine got into their stride with 6 more goals from Jamie Christians (3), Schaughn van Greunen and two more by Kyle Friester, giving Fairmont an easy 7 0 win. After the game, the Crawford coach said that this was their biggest loss in her 3 years as Crawford s coach, and invited our boys to tour Johannesburg in a tournament arranged by them. She further commented that their behaviour on the field, and the respect that they showed the umpires, was why they were inviting our boys (as well as their hockey skills!). Other Results: U16A vs Fairmont 2 nd Won 2 : 0 U16B vs Tableview U16A Lost 1 : 2 U14A vs Edgemead U14A Drew 0 : 0 U14B vs Tableview U14A Drew 0 : 0 15) WELL DONE District North Cricket Team Selection Four of our learners have been chosen for the District North age-group teams for These cricketers will participate as a team in the winter program which is held during the off-season May to September period at the indoor facilities of the Peninsula Cricket Academy.
