9) FAIRMONT DRUMMIES Saturday the 31 st marked the day of our first Large Drill competition for Drummies. We arrived in the mist and wind, full of excitement and anticipation for what lay ahead. The squad were whipping flags and the subbies were throwing maces while we waited for our turn on the field. Our coach called us into line and we marched off to uniform check. Before we knew it, we were standing in the waiting area behind the field we were going to perform on. Filled with nerves and excitement, we marched forward to the sound of LEFT LEFT LEFT RIGHT LEFT The music came on and our nerves evaporated. The crowd cheered as we carried out our display. We came second overall to Settlers. Well done to the Grade 8 s who marched for the first time, and to our leader, Gaby, who wrote exams that same morning but still managed to come first in the leader category. You did us proud! Jessica Davies Gr. 10

15) RUGBY REPORTS vs PAREL VALLEI (31 May 2014) 1 st Team What an absolutely beautiful setting and a great vibe around the various sporting codes that were taking place. Parel Vallei pupils and teachers alike could be proud of the general behavior, great sportsmanship, and overall discipline they displayed on the day. The boys appeared focused and understood that this was a big one and finally Fairmont would come up against a team playing in a higher league, and would be a very physical match. The team talk before the game and the warm-ups went really well. The game took place in some dreadful gusty windy conditions which we thought would allow for a less attractive game of rugby. To everyone s surprise, both teams came out and tried to play some good running and attacking rugby. It was a massive tussle upfront and, with Fairmont playing against the wind in the first half, meant some serious defending and tough running by the backs. Parel Vallei really took it to our forwards and on numerous occasions cleaned Fairmont out at the rucks and got some good turnover ball. However, the Fairmont defense held strong, true to their guts and determination. The game was being played in the true spirit of sportsmanship which allowed for a massive input physically by both sides. The first half had its chances and both teams made every effort to run and keep the ball alive. Turnovers happened frequently, and the upfront tackles were great to see. Daniel le Grange played a massive game around the fringes, and took a lot of quick taps to get over the advantage line. There were lots of individuals who did some great things at times. Fairmont managed an unconverted try by Qhamani Baleka after a strong run by Austin Clayton just before half time, and then defended with all their might until the break. In the second half, Fairmont played with the wind and scored two more tries through Darryn Beighton, who had a storming game, and Matthew Martins. Corbyn Pond converted both. We had a few scrums that went wrong and then some old bad habits crept back in, running up straight, not securing own line-out balls etc. - simple basics which we practice week in and week out.

Despite that, the positive is that Fairmont can turn scrambled balls into points, and to once again keep our opponents from crossing the try-line is great testament to Fairmont s awesome defensive structures. Adrianne Mohali was named Man of the Match for his hard work on the ground and securing some turnover balls. He improves every week in his new role at number 8. The overall performance was a good one and the result a great one as Fairmont ran out 19 0 victors against their much fancied opponents. 2 nd Team This Saturdays game took place in chilly, windy weather, against a well trained, disciplined Parel Vallei in Somerset West. Although the Seccies put in determined effort (evident so far this season), the fluidity, especially in the first half, to which we have been accustomed this season, seemed to be lacking. Unfortunately the chips were against our team. The Seccies lost their game, bringing the total of the season to 5 wins and 2 losses. This was certainly no poor performance or bad approach; rather an opponent that was bigger in size and had an extra card in the pack in play on the day. As in previous matches, the scrums were uncontested due to the lack of depth in the forward pack. In this instance it could have been an advantage to the Seccies. This time the Seccies met their match in the lineout department, with neither side managing to steal much of the opponents ball so this portion of the game was pretty much even. The loose mauls were also on a pretty even basis, but the Seccies had the distinct advantage in the rucking, with their determination and positive attack, often proving to be one of their stronger points. The first half started with the teams battling it out in the centre half of the field with the Seccies showing determined play. At times though the slick bond between the forwards and the backline seemed to falter. It took fifteen minutes for the opposition to cross the line and convert their try, bringing the half time score to 0 :7 in favour of the opposition. It took only two minutes into the second half for the winger of the opposition to dash down the line from his own try line to score their second try, unconverted. Fifteen minutes later, a penalty was awarded to the opposition which added another three points to the tally. This seemed to motivate the Seccies who replied two minutes later with a try close to the posts by Dino Luiz and converted by Wayde Paul, bringing the closing score to 7 : 15 in favour of Parel Vallei. I guess the Seccies learned a lot, but certainly can still feel proud of their performance against this squad on the day. 16) BOYS HOCKEY RESULTS VS DF MALAN & PAARL VALLEI (30/31 May 2014) The results of matches versus DF Malan were pleasing, but the A-teams were looking tired after Fridays matches. Good hockey was played to win all three close matches. The stats: Played 11 Won 9 Drew 1 Lost 1 Goals for: 26 Goals against: 8 So few goals, shows how hard Fairmont worked to win 9 matches. Well done!

1 st Team vs DF Malan Won 7 : 1 In a dazzling display of passing hockey, Fairmont scored 5 goals in the first 20minutes. With Fairmont lookingfor more goals, DF Malan scored against the run of play. Excellent defence kept their 1st team down to only 2 more goals to give the firs team their best win of the season. Goal Scorers: Jamie Christians (4), Kyle Friester, Jadee Hendricks, Jarryd Venter 1 st Team vs Paarl Vallei Won 5 : 4 Parel Vallei scored with a great drag flick in the 1st minute, and the school had to work hard to go 2 : 1 up. Then, again, two of the first team players saw fit to argue with the umpires resulting in Fairmont playing with only 9 players on the turf. This spolilt what was an otherwise thrilling match as the lead changed hands again and again. Finally Schaughn completed his hatrick with his second drag-flick to clinch the game for us. Goal Scorers: Schaughn van Greunen (3), Jadee Hendricks, Kyle Friester 2 nd Team vs DF Malan Won 2 : 0 A dour encounter, which Fairmont did well to win, when Morgan Simmonds fired in another blistering cover drive. Goal Scorers: Previn Naidu; Morgan Simmonds U16A Team vs DF Malan Won 2 : 0 A much better performance by the re-organised defence. Strikers still need to toughen up. Goal Scorers: Rutger la Cock, Jason Vermaak U16A Team vs Paarl Vallei Won 2 : 0 Well done! Goal Scorers: Jason Vermaak, Tarquinn Williams U16B Team vs DF Malan Won 2 : 1 Although Fairmont won, this was not their best performance. Goal Scorers: Ryan Chedburn, Ryan Pey U16C Team vs DF Malan Lost 1 : 2 Disappointing result, but well done to Jarryd for scoring again Goal Scorers: Jarryd U14A vs DF Malan Drew 0 : 0 Without Ethan Lombard, the team struggled to find any cohesion. The many short corners push out was too slow to get in a decent shot. Keenan Opperman showed excellent stickwork, but where were the other forwards! U14A vs Paarl Vallei Won 2 : 0 A much better performance than the previous day. Well done! Goal Scorers: Braydon Smits, Jason Day

U14B vs DF Malan Won 2 : 0 A good win. Goal Scorers: Jordan Daly, Kyle Harrison U14C vs DF Malan Won 1 : 0 Better shooting = more goals. Well done!
