While the excitement ran high, the nerves were also apparent, as each individual would have to stay with a separate host family and attend a Danish school (Stenhus) for the next 10 days! Between all the school activities, many different towns were explored: Roskilde, Copenhagen, Soro, Helsingor and Holbaek. The host families went to exceptional lengths to ensure the comfort of their guests and, by the end of the trip, everyone left as friends. After bidding a sad farewell to the Danish group, the FHS tour moved on to 2 whirlwind days in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. After a long flight home without much sleep, the learners were greeted by excited parents and couldn t wait to share their stories. This fantastic adventure and opportunity will be cherished by all involved for a lifetime, and the experiences never forgotten. Teachers: Learners: Mrs S. Nortier and Mrs M. 14 11) BLOOD CLINIC LEGISLATIVE CHANGES REGARDING BLOOD DONORS AGED In accordance with the National Health Act No. 61 of 2003 and certain Government Notices, the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) is required to obtain written consent from a parent or legal guardian to withdraw blood from any person under the age of 18. The minimum age of acceptance to donate blood is 16 years. Blood Services in South Africa have made numerous representations over the past four years to the National Department of Health to reconsider this legislation in order to maintain a sufficient blood supply. The year old group represents approximately 13% of the total blood donor population in South Africa. At a meeting between representatives of the Blood Services and the National Department of Health on 10 th February 2016, it was confirmed that the Regulation would be amended, to allow blood donors to begin donating at age 16 years, under their own consent. The NDoH committed to fast-track the amendment to the Regulation, which is estimated to take approximately six months. The revision will be published for public comment. However, the NDoH confirmed that there was no legal mechanism to allow the Services to deviate from the existing Regulations, and the Childrens Act did not allow for consent for blood donation by 16 and 17 year olds. Accordingly, from 1 March 2016 the WPBTS will be asking the parents or legal guardians of 16 and 17 year olds to provide written consent prior to donating blood. This will apply for every donation until the Regulation is amended. WPBTS therefore requests your assistance in distributing Parental Consent forms prior to each blood donor clinic at your school. You will receive the necessary documentation from your WPBTS Promotions Officer. The Blood Services thank you for your support and cooperation during this interim period, which will hopefully be of short duration. Further information on the blood donation procedure is included on the Consent Form, as well as on the WPBTS website: If you require clarity or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on Further questions regarding the legislation may also be directed to Dr Terence Carter at CarteT@health.gov.za.

Out of the 6 matches they only lost one. The competition was really close and they ended up in 7 th place overall. Fairmont was again applauded by managers and parents alike for being well disciplined and excellent hockey players. Our very own Julia Hoal took the crown for goal scorer of the tournament. Congratulations, Julia! The final was a showdown between Bloemhof and Herschel. Congratulations to Herschel on winning the Championship Cup. Our results were as follows: 21) RUGBY REPORTS vs MALIBU HIGH (16 APRIL 2016) (HOME) 1 ST TEAM RUGBY There was a great atmosphere at the grounds and, despite the opposition being tough, most of the junior teams won their matches respectively. The weather was stunning and with a slight breeze, allowed for some good running rugby. The support was awesome and thanks to all those who stayed and cheered our team on. Boys were really focused at warm up and this was just a continuation of a good weeks practice. They were focused on improving in some areas which let us down in the 2 friendly matches played earlier this season. The match got off to a pretty intense start and both sides looked in the mood to run from all angles of the field. Defense was to be a major factor and this the Fairmont Bears did pretty well. Set phases did not go our way and Malibu dominated the scrums and hustled well in the line outs.

Fairmont however managed to get control in open play and won some good turnover ball which turned into some great attacking play by the backs who finished off some amazing tries. 7 tries were scored and most were converted by Brandon Erasmus. The Bears stuck to structures nicely and this resulted in some well-orchestrated tries from set moves. A few missed tackles was another weakness, but still an overall improvement. This was a good team effort and with a few adjustments and improvements will grow from strength to strength. Fitness is looking better which resulted in better decision-making towards the end. Forwards did enough to keep the ball going forward, but the day definitely belonged to the exciting backs. What an awesome effort from the squad which, despite the stats revealing otherwise, left Fairmont Bears victorious by 51 : 0. U15A TEAM On Saturday, 16 April, our U15A, better known as the Trojans, met the visiting team - Malibu. It all began when one of our sponsors, Mario Fernandez, handed out the match jerseys to our various players and was given his own supporters jersey by our Captain Lyle Muller. The boys looked more determined than what they have in our first two pre-season games; they were definitely hungry for their first win. The match kicked off at 10h15 and, to our disappointment, the kickoff was loose and Malibu retained their own kick, scoring a quick try within the first 5 minutes of the game. They converted their kick leaving the Trojans 7 : 0 behind. Within the next 10 minutes, Malibu kicked for hope and once again gathered the ball scoring another converted try, scoring 14 : 0 in favour of the visitors.

The boys pulled together as our structure started playing a role, dominating both their and our scrums and lineouts. Our structure took form and from their mistake on their 5m line after a scrum, the ball jumped out and Daniel Middleton dove for the Trojans first try. This was easily converted by Caleb Adams taking the score 7 : 14, still in favour of the visitors. The half time whistle blew and it was time to rehydrate and listen to wise words from the three various coaches. The second half started and the boys gathered momentum quickly with Lyle Muller being illusive and scoring a try from a sneaky ruck on their 5m but unfortunately missed the conversion kick, hitting the uprights. The score was now 14 : 14. Wreckless penalties were given away by Malibu, allowing Caleb to easily score a penalty kick at goal putting the Trojans ahead for the first time in the game. Score Trojans. Malibu fought back scoring another converted try, leaving the Trojans behind 17 : 19 and our Trojans replied with a brilliant maul set piece and Spencer Jooste scoring a beautiful try which Caleb, from next to the touchline amazingly converted. Score 22 : 19 to Trojans. From this point it was tight, but Malibu defence was lacking and Max De Arujo managed to score a try from all the PD s, but unfortunately Caleb missed this conversion swinging past the left upright. Score 27 : 19. Our visitors were quick to reply with a lineout move to the elegant step of their fly half and a try in the corner. He was unable to convert his own try. Score The match went into the last few breaths and Malibu was fighting back, as they turned over a ruck and was on the attack in our 22m. Great defensive structure saw a turnover in a ruck from the Trojans forwards and Caleb gladly kicked the ball out for Full Time. All the players were ecstatic with the win and credit to the forwards for dominating the set pieces. The Final score was 27 : 24 to the Trojans. U14 TEAM On Saturday, 16 April, the U14 rugby team played against Malibu High School. We arrived at Fairmont at 08h00, ready to warm up. The match kicked off at 09h00. During the first half, Calib Ehlers scored 2 tries, followed by Luke Baard who also scored 2 tries. The half time whistle blew and we all agreed that we were playing a tough team. In the second half, the spirit level increased and we played a great game of rugby, with Luke scoring three more tries. The team played as one unit and, by the time the final whistle blew, we clocked up an impressive 63 0 win. Every player contributed to our triumphant victory. David Dancig (Captain).

FAIRMONT vs PARKLANDS COLLEGE (25/04/2016) U/14 (WON 100 : 0) Fairmont U14 Team kicked off against Parklands College, immediately making an impact with a good tackle which resulted in a turnover. From the uncontested scrum, Fairmont scored their first try in the second minute. Parklands kicked off, Fairmont received and then ran straight through the Parklands College defence to score their second try. The rest of the game was basically similar in play with Fairmont scoring try after try. The kicking was much better than in previous matches as many of the tries were converted. That set the tone for the match and Fairmont finished with an outstanding 100 : 0 victory over Parklands College. U/15 (WON 50 : 21) We had high hopes about the game when we started, even with an unexpected change of the game to 10 players a side The half time score was 40 : 14 to Fairmont. The players who scored were Liam Churchill, Caleb Adams, Michael de Klerk, Aiden Delport and Lyle Miller. The end score was 50 : 21 with Fairmont taking the win. U16 (LOST 17 : 19) Great effort was displayed by the team playing on the day. For the first time, the team played some good rugby and that can only mean that the season ahead is going to be a good one. The mistake of knocking on the ball just before the try line caused us the game with Fairmont losing 17 : 19 against Parklands College. Mark Daniels scored twice and Gregory Hierse once. 1 ST TEAM (WON 64 : 0) The first team boys were excited for this game after a long Monday at school. They completed a dynamic warm-up before taking to the field. The conditions were perfect for running rugby, which our backs exploited quickly. The first half was a try fest for the Bears as they went into half time 42 : 0 up. Parklands College were impressive in the second half as they managed to somewhat slow down the flow of tries. The end score was 64 : 0 to Fairmont with tries by Sibakeng Ncube, (in his new boots), Jordan Kroll, Keegan van Rensburg, Liam Marais and Vuyo Matu, with impressive kicking displayed by Brandon Erasmus. JG MEIRING (23/04/2016) U/14 (WON) (19-5) Early morning at in Goodwood we kicked off against JG Meiring. We soon realized that it was going to be a tough match, especially when they scored a try in the 1 st half. We all agreed that we were not playing our best, so we decided to put some more effort into the match and that counter score two tries. At half time the score the score was 12-5.

In the second half we were put under immense pressure, but our defense held and we conceded no poits from the opposition. In the last minute Joshua Alexander chipped the ball into space, allowing Matthew Cloete to scoop it up and score a great try bringing the final score to 19-5 in Fairmonts favour. U/15 (Won) (34-10) On Saturday, 23 April Fairmont s u/15 rugby team, also known as the Trojans, played an away fixture against JG Meiring High School. With the early morning mist still hovering over the rugby fields at 7am, the team met in their school uniform before going to change and begin their warm up routine. The match kicked off at 8:30am, with Fairmont s outside centre, Liam Churchill scoring his team s first try, followed by a try from 8th man, Theodore Demasius. Shortly thereafter, Liam then went over for his second try. JG Meiring also managed to fight back and score their own two tries, with the Halftime score reading Fairmont to JG Meiring. In the second half Fairmont managed to rack up three more tries through excellent continuity and patience on attack. Fullback Michael de Klerk scored his first try of the day, before assisting to put winger, Davin Johnson over the whitewash.

Michael de Klerk then scored his second try, with flyhalf Caleb Adams, slotting his second conversion of the match. The U15 Trojans showed real character in the second half as they worked towards closing out their opponents to end the game as victors U16 (WON) (14-13) U/19B (DREW) (14-14) We started the game by receiving the kick-off. JG Meiring was put under pressure during the first half by Christopher Nel scoring in the corner, Christopher Green did a brilliant conversion. We went into the second half 7-0 up. JG Meiring came back a lot harder in the second half by scoring a try close to the poles that was converted. Our players started to lose their confidence, but with the encouragement from the Captain Arden and Vice- Captain Ryan the team starting playing better with Christopher Nel scoring his second try with a great conversion by Christopher Green. With only a minute left on the clock JG Meiring received a penalty on the 5m line and they manage to slip in a try, that was converted. It was a great game, but there is still room for improvement. 1 ST TEAM (Won 37 : 6) The first team arrived early on Saturday morning to cheer the other teams on. There was a slight delay before kick-off, but that did not put the boys off. The first half was much tighter than Fairmont would have liked, but the Bears ended off the half with courageous defence on their own line, keeping JG Meiring from crossing the chalk.

In the second half, the Bears settled into the rhythm and looked a much more polished side. 2 Tries from Liam Marais and Keegan Van Rensburg and one try from Sibakeng Ncube, as well as a superb kicking display from Brandon Erasmus brought the game to a close with a score of U19B vs PAARL BOYS HIGH (25/04/2016) U/19B (Lost 5 : 22) The boys were nervous about the match. In the changerooms, everyone was silent listening to music and watching motivational videos. During the warm-up, we were fully focused, communicating as a team. During the game the boys were pushing themselves into not giving up. Every time they got knocked down, they would get right back up to continue with the game. Our amazing Kule scored a try in the corner, but Fairmont were unable to convert the try due to our kicker being sent off for an unfortunate high tackle against our opponents. We were one man short for part of the second half and our opponents took advantage of that by scoring their third try. A few of our players were injured from nasty tackles from our opponent, but we continued to play until the final whistle.

When the final whistle blew, the score was 5 : 22 to Paarl Boys High. We played a hard game, but the better team won on the day. I am proud of my boys as we had just played on the weekend so we were not fully recovered yet; but we played our hearts out. There is still room for improvement; so, with our next game only two weeks away, we will have plenty of time to work on our mistakes during our practices. 22) SOCCER REPORT SOCCER FUNDRAISER We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Monty Family for the overwhelming support at the Panarottis, Cape Gate, soccer fundraiser. BOYS SOCCER vs EDGEMEAD U14A Lost 2 : 3 U19B GIRLS : PARKLANDS The U19B soccer ladies started the season yesterday. They unfortunately suffered a 0 : 1 defeat at the hands of Parklands, but showered true sportsmanship and determination. Good luck for the rest of the season girls!

After a quick toss of the coin, the match was on its feet. The first half was a bit of a struggle playing against the wind, but there were many shots on target. We were still unabke to score a goal. Only one goal was conceded in the whole match as the ball glazed the gloves of our keeper. With a renewed spirit Fairmont came back in the second half and played with a desire to win the match. Although the ball was constantly moving between their goalkeeper and our strikers, it unfortunately never reached the back of the net. The game was well fought and is just a taste of what is to come for the team. Back: Hayee Sangsuvan, Courtney April, Mieke Wolmarans, Ilse Harmse, Kguthalang Nkahle, Tailynn Rogers, Erin McFarlane Front: Alex Haye, Jessie Midgely, Teneil Stopford, Caitlin Sithole, Tamara Rabus U19B GIRLS : MILNERTON The U19B Soccer ladies beat Milnerton 3 : 0. Congrats to our goal scorers Tamara Rabus (2) and Lynda Portelli (1), and to Jessie Midgely Woman of the Match! Back: Hayee Sangsuvan, Mieke Wolmarans, Ilse Harmse, Erin McFarlane, Jessie Midgely, Monique von Mollendorff, Tailynn Rogers Front: Gaby Jordaan, Caitlin Sithole, Lynda Portelli, Teneil Stopford, Tamara Rabus, Kguthalang Nkahle

U/15 A VS ELKANAH The U15 girls soccer team kicked off their season with an amazing win of 11 : 0 against Elkanah House in their first match. The girls played exceptionally well and showed great teamwork. The game started off well with a fantastic goal about halfway through the first half, followed in quick succession by two more giving Nicole Pramatarov a hat trick. Unfortunately just on half time she injured herself badly, ending her game. In the second half, the team kept up their relentless pressure and scored 8 more goals before the final whistle. A special congratulations to the Grade 8 s in the team who handled themselves brilliantly in their first match and to the defenders who controlled the game from the back with some good defense, hardly ever letting the ball through. When it did manage to slip through, the goalie, Nina Quintal, had some amazing saves. The goal scorers were Tamara Rabus (1 goal), Lynda Portelli (2 goals), Nicole Pramatarov (3 goals) and Leila Morris (5 goals). Well done girls! Keep up the good work - you have made Fairmont proud. U15 B VS BUREN/HERZLIA

The U15B ladies team has had a busy week playing two matches this week. Most of these ladies have just started playing soccer for the first time. Matches were approached with loads of enthusiasm and excitement. Both matches were lost, but these ladies gave their all and were full of smiles. Keep working hard and don t give up. 1 ST TEAM SOCCER GIRLS Dream Team win 20 : 1 The first team soccer girls played the Elkanah B Team on Tuesday. They went into the match aiming to start the match with a bang. They did so indeed! The first goal came in the first minute, with a shower of goals to follow. The first half ended with a score of 11 : 0, with goals scored by Emily Willson, Isabella Cockroft and Naemi Frenzel. The second half was slightly different when the coach decided to play around with the positions, but it didn t stop the girls from scoring more goals. Unfortunately, Elkanah managed to score a goal after sloppy play by Fairmont, but we bounced back by scoring a few more goals. By the end of the match, 7 of the 13 Fairmont players had scored goals resulting in a final score of 20 : 1. The girls showed incredible teamwork and spirit. 34 25) LIBRARIAN S CHOICE TINKERS by Paul Harding An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls begin to collapse, the windows come loose, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating, in death throes from cancer and kidney failure. A methodical repairer of clocks, he is now finally released from the usual constraints of time and memory to rejoin his father, an epileptic, itinerant peddler, whom he had lost seven decades before. In his return to the wonder and pain of his impoverished childhood in the backwoods of Maine, he recovers a natural world that is at once indifferent to man and inseparable from him, menacing and awe-inspiring. 26) WELL DONE Ethan Noble (Gr. 12) Ethan competed in Stellenbosch in the Senior meeting. His relay team secured a Silver medal- 2nd place. He has also been selected for the SA junior squad to compete in Zambia in June. He will be wearing Protea colours - Green and Gold! Christine Hagan (Gr. 8) Christine participated in the Inter-Provincial Action Netball tournament in Midrand during the April holidays. Well done, Christine

Dylan Wright (Gr. 8) Dylan Wright swam in the SA age group Nationals swimming Champs, held in Port Elizabeth from March He won the following medals: 3 x gold medals (1,500m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle) 5 x silver medals 3 x bronze Dylan also broke 3 WP age group records in the 1,500m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly. Rebecca Walker (Gr. 9) and Lauryn Giles (Gr. 8) Rebecca and Lauryn have been selected for the Western Province Goju Kai Karate Team. They will be competing at the Western Cape Championships on 7 May, and at the South African Championships from 5 8 August. The final selection for the South African team will be done at the SA Championships which will hopefully see them going to Canada in 2017 for the World Champs. We wish you everything of the very best with your upcoming competition. Kelly Vroon (Gr. 11) Kelly represented Western Province at the SA Youth/Senior National championships and 2016 Rio Olympic trials from 9 April 17 April in Durban. She was placed 3 rd and received a bronze medal in the youth category in the 200m backstroke. She also achieved a 4 th place for 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Congratulations, Kelly
