1 Sandy Beach Yacht Club, 1851 Winter Road/P.O. Box 513, Grand Island, NY Dear Members, Happy March! We are 45 days from the anticipated dock opening. Yes! That s right, if the weather holds steady, and if the dredger is on schedule, I am hopeful that the docks can be open for business by April 14. This has been a very interesting year with regard to assigning slips. With five open slips and three temporarily assigned slips from the previous year, four new slip requests and a five requests to be reassigned to more desirable slips this has truly been a psycho-social political experience that I will never forget. The slips are posted and have been assigned in accordance with By-Law#7 of the Constitution as well as guided by the principals embodied in Section #9 of the SBYC Handbook. I bring these to everyone s attention as a reminder that as a member of the organization you should take time to familiarize yourself, when you have time, with the rules and regulations that govern our club. All of these documents are located on the SBYC website, under the ABOUT US section DOCUMENTS Below are a few relevant snips from Constitution By-Law #7 that have guided my decision making 1. Any reference to Slips also refers to Floating docks for PWC unless otherwise noted. Slip applicants must be a member (Active, Intermediate, Honorary or Junior) in good standing. A member in good standing is defined as working at least one Tuesday night a month or the equivalent, working on at least one party committee a year, and be free of Club debt. 2. Slip assignments will be issued by the Fleet Captain according to following {1} availability {2} safety {3} status of membership {4} seniority of applicant 7. Present slip holders in good standing will be assured a slip at the Club each year, but not necessarily the same slip. This will be determined by the Fleet Captain based on status of membership, seniority, size of boat, safety, and input from the affected slip holder. 9. If members are dissatisfied with slip assignments, they may present their case to the Board of Directors. The Board will make final decisions based on the Constitution of the Club and Club By- Laws. Refer to pages 16 and 17 of the constitution to regarding other elements of slip assignments

2 A snip from SBYC Membership Handbook and Club Rules #9 that has also influenced my decision 9. SLIP ASSIGNMENTS Unfortunately, the number of slips is limited and demand is usually great. Every effort is made to satisfy the greatest number of members in as safe a manner as possible. The Fleet Captain makes decisions about slip assignments. All slip applicants must be members in good standing which is defined as working at least one Tuesday night a month or the equivalent, working on at least one party committee a year and be free of club debt. Slip application may be made by a new member upon his joining the club. Slip applications come out with the dues billing each year. Those desiring a slip should return the application, with a check for one half the slip fee, by February 1st. Should the Fleet Captain be unable to accommodate an applicant the deposit check will be returned. Slip assignments will be made by March 1st. In order to insure that our scarce dock resources are assigned equitably, please sign in as requested. Members should be aware that once assigned a slip, they have use of it for the season. On occasion members may be asked to move to a different slip during a season. Once assigned a slip a member has a continuing right to a slip, but not a particular slip. It is necessary for the Fleet Captain to make adjustments each year to most safely accommodate as many boats as possible in the safest possible manner. A set of guidelines for slip assignment is included. The Board of Directors shall settle disagreements about slip assignments. A reminder that a final payment for your Slip and/or PWC is due by May 1, Schedule of Upcoming Fleet and Club Related Events 1. Saturday, March 24 - Annual Slip Holder's Meeting from 9 to Noon - Light Lunch will be provided ~ (Participation - All Slip and PWC Holders) ~ Special Guests to include: Army Corps of Engineers to provide River Project Updates, Training on the use of AED (Defibrillator), Schedule of Events overview from the Auxiliary Fleet and Power Boat Captains, Marina projects overview and other presentations. 2. Saturday, April 14 - Dock / PWC Floater Setup ~ (Participation - All Slip and PWC Holders) 3. Saturday, April 21 - Spring Cleanup ~ (Participation - All Members) 4. Sunday, April 29 - Opening Day Ceremonies and Breakfast ~ (Participation - The first 114 Reservations - Closed Event) Warm Regards, Frank Spagnolo, Fleet Captain

3 We are all looking forward to the 2018 Boating season and some warm weather. Good news, it is on its way. We are looking forward to the TGIFs and all the SBYC events. Our February dinner meeting was held at Eldons. Everyone had a great time. Thank you Wendy Brown for organizing the event. There will be no March Meeting. Our next meeting will be April 12th, all are welcome. We would like more members to come and share their ideas. Our meetings are the second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. Our charity for the months of January/February is the Grand Island Fire Company. If you haven t gotten your raffle tickets for the YETI cooler (filled with Booty ) see one of Women s Organization Board members. You don t want to miss out on this raffle. Mark your calendars for our upcoming events. Yeti Raffle drawing, April 29 at the Opening Day Breakfast. Our Father s Day and meat raffle TGIF, June 15th and don t forget Rueben Night, July 13. 4 On January 19, 2017 Marge Sheehan, wife of PC Jack Sheehan passed peacefully in Port Charlotte, Florida at the age of 93. She was a kind, beautiful woman who loved her family dearly, "Muddy" will be missed. Marge was always a joy about the club, making many contributions to the Women's Organization and along the side Jack for SBYC. She is remembered, bellied up to the bar, with her gal pals, and devilishly laughing. Rick Hensel has assumed the duties for the Sunshine committee. Please notify Rick of any significant events, births, deaths, etc.
