1 March 2014 The Ditty Bag Sandy Beach Yacht Club 1851 Winter Road / P.O. Box 513 Grand Island, NY From the Vice-Commodore: Believe it or not Spring is only a couple of weeks away! Although the Great Lakes have the highest percentage of ice cover in more than 20 years, everyone can rest assured that the Farmer s Almanac is predicting a warmer and dryer than normal summer. Until then please come by for one of Italo s soon to be famous TGIF s while we wait for the weather to turn. A big thank you to Dan and Wendy Brown and the rest of the Valentines party committee for a great event, everything was wonderful and went off without a hitch. Next up is the St. Patrick s day party so get you green on and come on down. Here at the club we are focusing on getting a few of the bigger projects knocked out. The SBYC construction crew has been hard at work; the new front door is installed and will be finished off over the next couple of weeks. A new storage closet for the Women s Organization is also in progress and should finish up over the next month as well. Hopefully the weather will turn soon and we can get outside and get ready for out 75 th Anniversary celebration. Thank you to Dan Brown, Lou Fabiano, the Ode s, and prospective member Ryan Hoolihan for their cleanup efforts following the basement flooding on the 21 st. Thanks to their efforts both weekend parties went off without an issue. After this long cold winter the work list is long and we can use all the help we can get. If you can t come to the club for Tuesday work nights give me a call and we can make alternative arrangements so you (Continued on page 2) From the Women s Organization: It sure has been a long winter but that didn t stop some of the ladies of Sandy Beach from enjoying a dinner at Savor at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute in February. The food was wonderful but the company was even better. Ray Ode gave us his wish list when we met for our January meeting. We hopefully will be able to help contribute to some of the projects on his list this spring. A few of our girls will be enjoying warmer weather in Florida in March. We will discuss how we can contribute to club improvements at our April meeting. Our Father s Day TGIF in June will be a Chiavetta s Chicken Dinner and Meat Raffle as it was so successful last year. Wishing our Jo Ann Ward a speedy recovery from her most recent surgery. She is a trooper. Hopefully just one more month of the bitter cold. We are all ready for some warmer weather. With Love, Maryann LaRussa This from Art Theobald's daughter Pam, to Gary LaRussa: Hi Gary, my Dad is not doing well again. His blood counts are very low & the doctors think he may have leukemia. The Oncologist will be in soon & talk to us more. He has steadily gone down hill the past 2 weeks. Very tired, weak, doesn't want to eat & things like that. This diagnosis would explain all his symptoms. All he wants to do is come home, so we are going to get a hospital bed & bring him home. If he does have leukemia, I think he qualifies for Hospice care so that will help a lot. I will keep you updated. If you would let other SBYC members know I would appreciate it. Your's is the only I still have. I will let you know for sure his diagnosis as soon as we know. Mom is doing OK. They've been doing a lot of reminiscing this past week & talking about how beautiful a life they had together - 62yrs in July. By the way, the burgee was his best Christmas present last year! He was thrilled to get it. I knew then it was going to be our last Christmas together so I wanted to make it special & that did it. Thank you so much. There will be some modifications required to accommodate all requests, but for the most part, those with no changes to their boat since last year will be back in the same slip as last year. Welcome to members Dave Allen and Russ Bauer who will be keeping boats with us this year. Several members have notified me they intend to purchase larger boats, and I have been making the necessary accommodations. I will need the slip request form sent to me again with the length and beam of the new boat so I can best arrange for the new slip location. I will those members directly to get the needed information. Final slip fees will be needed to be sent to me by May 1 st. I still need help with the Race Committee and will be asking all you power boaters if you can assist. More on that subject will be mentioned at next Friday s general membership meeting. Upcoming dates to put on our calendar are the Spring clean-up on Saturday, April 26 th in preparation for the April 27 th opening day ceremony.
