Benzid, Curriculum Leader: IT & Computing, writes: On Friday 16 th June, Stanborough s Year 7 robotics team visited MBDA in Stevenage to compete in the preliminary event for the annual Robot Rumble competition. On the day they designed and built a robot and then took part in a driver obstacle challenge. Throughout the day they also had the opportunity to speak to engineers from MBDA and were given time to make adjustments to their robot. The day was a success as the team finished 1 st with a time of 9.04, thanks to Luke s excellent driving skills. Place They worked well together throughout the build up to this competition, demonstrating excellent team working skills. The team will now be preparing for the intermediate event coming up in October, where they will have to further develop their robot and prepare a presentation. Year 8 Work Shadowing Day All parents have been sent a letter and form regarding Year 8 work shadowing day. Please ensure that this is returned, completed, to your child s form tutor before the deadline of Monday 3 rd July The letter can be found on the VLE Careers Year 8 work shadowing and also on the school website under parents / letters. Our 2017 Robotics Team: - Oscar Saunders, Luke Barron, Charlie Greasby, Lucy Woolmore and Joshua Imafidon (all in Year 7) Student s comments: - Lucy Woolmore (7B) Going to the Vex robotics competition was a great experience. For the first time building a robot with metal parts, we did fantastically. It was awesome for all of the team. Oscar Saunders (7S) It was a very fun and interesting experience and winning made it even better.

Ms A. Barnard, Subject Leader: Art, writes: 2017 GCSE Art Exhibition On Tuesday 20 th June, Stanborough School art department hosted the 2017 GCSE art exhibition.

The displays were diverse as projects highlighted a personal response to a variety of interesting and controversial themes.

2 Ms A. Barnard, Subject Leader: Art, writes: 2017 GCSE Art Exhibition On Tuesday 20 th June, Stanborough School art department hosted the 2017 GCSE art exhibition. The event showcased students work which explored a range of media from sculpture to printmaking. The displays were diverse as projects highlighted a personal response to a variety of interesting and controversial themes. The launch evening was a buzzing success, with students keen to show family and friends their hard work and achievements. It was also a delight to see younger GCSE students touring the exhibition to take inspiration and ideas for their own practice. Again, we want to congratulate all of the Year 11 GCSE art students for their hard work and effort and wish each and every one the best of luck in their future career path. Mr K. Christodoulou, Head of Physics, writes: Parents of Year 9 and 10 students... The new AQA science GCSE courses require your son or daughter to learn over 20 physics equations by heart. To support them in their efforts to learn the equations, we have decided to publish an equation of the week for students to learn. These are displayed around the science department. We are now up to equation three as shown below: 1. S = 2. V = I x R 3. F = m x a A new equation will be published each week. Please take this opportunity to regularly test your son or daughter on the equations!

3 Sports Report - 13th June to 20th June 2017 Mr P. Harris, Curriculum Leader: PE, writes: County Football Trails Congratulations to Year 9 students Jack Dickinson, Corey Rodriguez, Taylor Steer and Josh Wiseman who have all been nominated to trial for the Hertfordshire County Football Team. The trial will take place next week and we wish the boys good luck! Cricket On Wednesday 14 th June, Mr Minion and Mr Moore took 16 boys to the Year 8 & Year 10 Calypso Cricket Competition at Sele School. Calypso cricket is five over cricket, played with a softer ball and a smaller pitch; the aim is to score fast, with as many boundaries as you can muster. Mr Minion writes: The Year 8 boys were Cory Meyer, Oli Warner, Alex Khan, Bailey Cripps, Danny Eason, Faizan Choudhry, Hanif Chowdhury and Zlatko Murphy. There were 12 schools taking part, split into two groups. In our group were Sele, Broxbourne, Robert Barclay, Richard Hale A and Simon Balle. Our first game against Simon Balle was a fairly comfortable win, as indeed was the second game against Broxbourne. Our bowling was accurate and Cory, Danny and Zlatko were scoring runs for fun. Our third game was against pretournament favourites, Richard Hale A. This proved to be very tough indeed and we ended up losing quite badly. This defeat may have damaged the confidence of lesser teams, but not our boys. Sele were dispatched without the boys breaking into a sweat (no mean feat on the hottest day of the year so far!) which meant a win against Robert Barclay would see us into the semi finals. This was again achieved comfortably, with all bowlers learning from the earlier defeat and bowling very good line and length. This meant we had qualified for the semi-finals against the unbeaten winners of the other group, Chauncy. This was going to be tough. Made even tougher when our leading scorer, Cory, was caught for 1. Danny and Zlatko steadied the ship with Zlatko making an unbeaten 28 before being forced to retire (batsmen retire at 25 in Calypso) and this pushed the score to 51. Respectable but not unbeatable! Chauncy batted well and had scored 34 from the first three overs, needing 17 from the last two overs. Things were looking bleak as Faizan picked up the ball to bowl his over...1st ball no runs, 2 nd ball no runs, 3rd and 4 th balls no runs. The rest of the team held their breath...5 th ball caught! A wicket! 6 th ball and just 1 run. Unbelievable bowling! They needed 16 off the last over and Danny was not going to let that happen on his watch! Into the final against, yes, Richard Hale A. Richard Hale were expecting a repeat of the walk over in the group stages but we were determined to show our real talent. We scored 41 for only the loss of 1 wicket which was a brilliant performance! Richard Hale struggled and stuttered to 42 for 2, claiming the narrowest of victories but our boys had covered themselves in glory, coming a fantastic second in the competition. Very well done to all the boys who were a credit to the school and themselves. Fantastic bowling in particular from Faizan, Oli, Danny and Cory and wonderful batting from Cory, Zlatko, Danny, Hanif, and Alex. Supreme wicket keeping from Bailey also. Mr Moore, writes: The Year 10 cricket team, which included talented Year 9 s, set a high standard early on as Stanborough completely dominated their first two group games with a convincing win by three wickets against Simon Balle school, with an over to spare. This was followed up with an annihilation of Chauncy school, winning by four wickets with still over half our innings remaining. Chauncy's low score was due to some excellent bowling and fielding by Stanborough. We then lost narrowly to the eventual winners, Richard Hale Boys School. This seemed to knock confidence somewhat as we then tripped up in a close game with Mount Grace School. We finished joint runners up in our group and had to complete a sudden death bowl off (like a penalty shoot-out). Like true Englishmen we came unstuck and went out to the last bowl. This proved to be the difference as after a valiant effort, we fell 20 runs short of the target score. Overall, a respectable performance in this county-wide competition.

Stanborough Lakes in PE Year 8 s have been enjoying the recent hot spell of weather more than most in their PE lessons. This is because they have had the opportunity to cool off in Stanborough Lakes!

As you can see from the pictures, the students are certainly having a good time! They are currently half way through the 4 weeks of planned sessions. ENOUGH ABUSE!

This proved to be the difference as after a valiant effort, we fell 20 runs short of the target score. Overall, a respectable performance in this county-wide competition. Well done to Behram Printer, Tom Gray, Max Battersby, Travis Ford, Jack Joyce, Jake Green Charlie Wooley and Sean Davies. All of whom made great contributions throughout the tournament. The PE department have organised for students from Year 8 to experience different water sports, with guidance from qualified instructors at absolutely no cost. We are pleased to be able to offer parents the opportunity to attend a briefing which has been designed to highlight to parents the dangers of the internet and potential child sexual exploitation. It is vital that we work together to be aware of the dangers facing young people today, particularly, but not solely, linked to technology. This takes place on the evening of 14 th September 2017 from 5-6pm and is run by Marilyn Hawes, Founder and Head of Education & Support, Enough Abuse UK. All students from Years 7-11 will also be attending a session on this during the school day. The speaker is very experienced and extremely informative. We would strongly recommend that as many parents attend this session as possible, this will also compliment the work your child has done in the school day. 5 Lauren Fisher Senior Prefect Team Lauren started at Stanborough in September 2011 My new role is as a Head of School, alongside Macy and Chloe, with George as Deputy and Steph as Leading House Ambassador. Together, we make up the Heads of School team and I m extremely excited to be working alongside them for the next academic year, together with our fantastic teachers and students! In my role, I will be heading up the charity cluster which is an honour, especially for a cause which I m so passionate about, and I will be attached to the year 9 school council which will allow me to get to hear the opinions of younger students, and hopefully bridge the gap between us. From a young age I ve had a very keen interest in mental health and it s a cause very close to my heart. Through running the charity cluster, I m looking forward to having a prominent role in school fundraising, especially for such a fantastic mental health organisation. By the time I leave in Year 13, I hope to have made my mark at Stanborough with regards to mental health, through raising awareness, uniting all in tackling it, and by getting more young people talking about it. My role also includes in-lesson support coordination, which I m pleased to be taking on as I think it s a great way to strengthen the relationship between the lower school and post-16, with benefits for both. I will enjoy working together with students across the school in seeing our projects through to the very end and ultimately seeing the physical changes. I have real pride in our school and am excited to represent it and be involved in some of the decisions which will benefit Stanborough students for many years to come. I m looking forward to what I hope will be a very successful year of fundraising, as always! I love the sense of unity we have at Stanborough and how diverse we are. There s something for everyone here and I love how everyone can express themselves through subjects they are passionate about, whether that be drama, sport, music or maths. I love going to the gym, shopping, spending time with family and experimenting with healthy food. I m really interested in nutrition and health so hope to go on to study Nutrition and Dietetics at university, with the intention of becoming a dietician. I love travelling and am hoping to take a gap year to see Thailand and Australia.
