1 MONMOUTH SCHOOL for Boys BOYS NEWS Michaelmas Term Week 7 October 2017 A note from the Monmouth School Headmaster Welcome to our final newsletter of the half term, and I d like to congratulate our rugby players on their superb results against Malvern College in our latest block fixture. The 1st XV victory, in Ledbury, was spectacular, and thank you to the many families who supported this. Congratulations also to Nathan on his national cricket award; this is fully deserved after his great achievements batting for our 1st XI in the last summer season. I wish all Monmouth boys, their families, and Spike the Hedgehog (see below), an enjoyable and restful half term break. Top Stories NATHAN BAGS YOUNG CRICKETER OF THE MONTH HONOUR Huge congratulations to Nathan who has been named as one of The Cricketer magazine s young players of the month and it s clear to see why when you look at the amazingly consistent season that Nathan has had with the bat. He managed to notch up three centuries, two of which were unbeaten and these scores of 130, 129 and 101 for Monmouth School for Boys were exceeded by his fantastic 150 for his club side Port Talbot Town 2nd XI. One of the golden statistics in cricket is Sir Don Bradman s average of runs and Nathan s across his 23 matches this season definitely proves that he is one to watch next summer. So firstly we must say a huge congratulations to Nathan for achieving this well deserved recognition in a national cricketing publication and secondly a big thank you to him for giving us the perfect excuse to put some archive shots of last season s cricket matches into this edition of the newsletter, complete with sunshine, as we head into the somewhat darker months of winter!

3 STREET ART INSPIRES FORM III ARTISTS Form III boys enjoyed an inspirational day enjoying Bristol s street-art scene, exploring spray-paints and stencils and finally visiting The Arnolfini Gallery to see the most popular art exhibition ever. Pupils gave a personal response to a wide breadth of work; from gigantic prints to colourful tapestries, juxtaposed social comments and imagery on classical pots and a very flamboyant motorcycle...the creations by Grayson Perry certainly stirred up lots of issues for conversation and debate back in the classroom. ROWERS PULL IN POUNDS FOR CHARITY Last week 29 boys from Monmouth House turned out for our annual sponsored row, this time in aid of the Cardiff and Vale Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth. In six teams, with a few helpers from the fifth form Rowing Squad, the boys managed to complete the 60km row in record time. The boys are now collecting their sponsorship money and we hope to be able to make a substantial contribution to this worthy cause. It was a great team effort so well done boys! CALLING ALL PROGRAMMERS AND SOFT- WARE DESIGNERS - COMPUTER SCIENCE FAIR 2017 IS ALMOST HERE Students have been busy with National Cipher Challenge 2017, preparation for BE- BRAS Computational Thinking competition in November and the RaspberryPi Pioneers competition to build devices to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. On 19 November 2017 we will have our Computer Science Fair 2017 and hope lots of boys will use the half term to program a project, or build with hardware and software, ready to demonstrate. STUDENTS BOWLED OVER BY CRICKET STARS Six former England Test cricketers rode into Monmouth School for Boys this evening as part of a gruelling cycling challenge for charity.

Old Monmothian Steve James, who had 17 seasons with Glamorgan and played two Tests for England in 1998, returned to familiar surroundings.

Marcus Trescothick, Tim Bresnan, Geraint Jones, Steve James, Matthew Maynard and Gavin Hamilton are all taking part in Big Bike Ride 3. Talented players from Monmouth School for Boys, Monmouth School for Girls and Monmouth School Boys Prep enjoyed meeting their cricketing heroes and having photographs taken with them. It was great to speak to them and get to know them. Monmouth School for Boys Hitchcock Pavilion hosted around 75 riders who are raising money for the Tom Maynard Trust and the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) Benevolent Fund. LATEST RUGBY NEWS - SUCCESS AGAINST MALVERN ROUNDS OFF FIRST HALF OF TERM Last weekend saw Monmouth take on local rivals Malvern College in a highly successful set of fixtures, with Monmouth winning 7 out of 8 matches. The under 14 age group came away with two convincing wins, the A team 29-0 and the B team The U15 showed a great team performance, they kept battling away throughout the game and didn t let their heads drop despite being 15 points adrift at one point and ended up victors This is a great turn around since they lost 67-7 last season against Malvern. They played some great attacking rugby, and defended bravely; they played with discipline and self-belief. They must take this forward into the next match against St Edwards Oxford. The B team also won a more comfortable meeting, 42 points to 5. Unfortunately, the under 16s lost away from home against a strong Malvern side however showed signs of improvement. The third 15 also came away from Malvern with a strong victory, scoring an unanswered 27 points in a dominant encounter. The second 15 found themselves a try down at half time. Fortunately, the quick handling of Chase and feet of Pugh would prove too much for the heavier opposition. As the Malvern side tired in the second half, Mazhar got a second half hat-trick taking his tally to four tries for the match, while elder brother Azhar picked up a pair. This left Monmouth deserved victors. The 1st XV kicked off on Friday night under the floodlights at a packed out Ledbury RFC. Malvern started the game well taking a 3-0 lead. It didn t last for long however, as a good solo effort from Laurie Baldwin saw Monmouth lead at the break 7 points to 6. Toby opened the scoring in the second half with a clinical finish, however an inability to clear our lines let Malvern back into the game. A Malvern clearance gave Merritt some time and space in the backfield, a deadly step saw him cut through the opposition line with only the fullback to beat, a goose step and too much pace saw him round the fullback and front flip over the line. However Monmouth who must have been keen to keep the crowd entertained and allowed Malvern in for another soft try making the score with 10 minutes to play. A penalty kick and well taken try from Richards sealed the victory for Monmouth and saw us claim the Border Shield. This victory has pushed us into the top 10 in the Daily Mail trophy. I want to congratulate everyone for a very successful first half of term and wish them a restful well-earned break to prepare for the challenging second part of the season. Decaying city streets, hospitals and funfairs provided some of the updated settings as the boys found ways of transforming the play for a modern audience.

5 REGIONAL RUGBY SUCCESS FOR FORM IV STUDENTS Fourth form students Mehraaj and Rohi celebrated their success in being selected for Newport Schools Rugby Development Squad this week. In gruelling trials whittling 150 talented players down to just 45, the boys impressed squad coaches with their talent, skill and commitment to the game. The boys will now add weekly training sessions to their already busy schedules. We await news of their ongoing progress! MACBETH REIMAGINED BY CREATIVE FORM II Pupils in 2G used their recent theatre trip to see Macbeth as inspiration for some creative re-imaginings of the Scottish Play. Decaying city streets, hospitals and funfairs provided some of the updated settings as the boys found ways of transforming the play for a modern audience. The boys impressed with their creativity and understanding of the text and are looking forward to continuing with Shakespeare s famous tragedy next half term. Special mention must go to Alexander for what must surely be the first ever presentation of the iconic Witches Scene rendered entirely in home-made Black Forest Gateau!
