Boarding News: Weekend Activities The girls undertook a design challenge to see who could build a bridge to carry a ball across a distance in the slowest amount of time. The children were given a limited amount of Beach Babes There was only one clear group of winners and they were Sienna Middleton and Francesca Hughes well done! materials such as wooden dowel and Jelutong but were allowed to trade materials with anyone out of the four groups. Over the course of an hour the children traded and built some stunning structures. After enjoying a leisurely morning a bunch of giggling girls bundled into a mini bus for an afternoon at the beach. On arrival the fun began at the arcades with a few girls managing to win a cuddly toy! We then rolled up our trousers and enjoyed the sand and sea between our toes. After a while the heavens opened so we retreated to a rather delicious ice cream shop before heading back to OBH. On our return we regrouped with the boys for a tasty roast. On Saturday night, we saw the competitive side of the Year 7 girls in The Chocolate Game. The lucky rollers of the dice had to don hat, gloves and scarf before being allowed to eat as much chocolate as they liked; but only with a knife and fork! Lots of screaming ensued as accessories were exchanged and hamster tactics were employed in order to eat as much chocolate as possible. The rules were quickly relaxed to allow competitors to skip a go when some started to feel sick!

Year 6 Residential Bushcraft Trip A Pirate Morning Year 6 spend two nights away camping in woods of Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. For those of you familiar with the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, these three days provided an insight into the skills, teamwork, inventiveness and basic bushcraft skills required to be a successful D of E candidate. On arrival, the Year 6 were split into two tribes and were required to build a shelter which unbeknown to them, they would have to spend the night in; thankfully it did not rain. Tents were available but amenities were basic, with all cooking done over an open fire and washing up performed by the pupils with limited water supplies. The highlight of the three days has to be the lake swimming. In air temperatures of 30 degrees, we were all expecting a leisurely swim yet to our surprise the water, being fed by a natural spring, was absolutely freezing with the boys in particular finding the shock a little less bearable. The usual suspects of Henry Bevan, Hugo VV, and Caspar Boyce were un-phased by the icy temperatures. Back at base camp food was always on everyone s mind, the girls were very accomplished at building fires while the boys loved the cooking which included filleting a whole salmon. By the end of the 3 days we were all ready to hit the showers and baths back at school and say good bye to the porter loos. Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a pirate themed morning earlier this week. The budding pirate buccaneers were divided into four groups and Captain Jary explained the tasks. The groups enjoyed making pirate hats, finding out about pirates from the past, pirate quizzes and of course a treasure hunt around the school in search of the infamous Captain Jary s treasure. The children had a great morning, a big thank you to Captain Jary and her crew of teachers.

Mr. Berryman gives a talk to Years 3 & 4 On Monday, Mr Berryman (Thomas father) came to talk to Years 3 and 4 about their fabulous family expedition to Mount Everest Base Camp. Thomas and his Dad showed us a wonderful video clip of the passage that they took using sherpas and yaks to carry their belongings. They also showed us a variety of artefacts including the water filter that within three easy pumps successfully changed dirty river water to drinking water. Several photos of the trip were also shown including a picture of an extremely high suspension bridge where they met a yak coming the other way. As it is only one way traffic on these bridges, Thomas, his Mum and Dad had to back track and go back to the start prolonging the daunting crossing. The audience sat spell bound throughout and it was wonderful to hear the children asking so many interesting questions. Many thanks to Thomas and his Dad for such an interesting morning. My trip to Mount Everest by Thomas Berryman 3EW. Earlier this year, Mum, Dad and I went to EBC (Everest base camp). We ate the same things almost every day and I ate noodles mostly all the time. I enjoyed the trek so much! I wore very warm clothes. Near EBC it was very icy, cold and snowy. The Sherpas and the yak are very strong (Sherpas have stronger skulls than us and the yak have much stronger spines). Crossing the bridges was very scary. EBC is 5,300m high. The air is thin at this height, it s difficult to breathe. The tents are on moraine at the foot of the Kumbu icefall.

News from the Music Department. SUMMER CONCERTS On Thursday and Friday last week the school came together to celebrate the musical talents of all pupils. This year we held two separate summer music concerts with the first one being a Middle School concert on Thursday. Each year group performed their songs very well and we were treated to some excellent solos from the various individuals on their instruments as well as the Junior Strings. This was a lovely occasion and all children should be very proud of their achievements. The Senior Summer Concert took place on Friday evening and was split into two halves. The first was a celebration of the school ensembles with outstanding performances from the School Orchestra, Brass Band, Concert Band, Baird s Band, Senior Strings, Jazz Band and School Choir. There was a truly remarkable performance from Auriel Pawsey on the piano during which the Britten Hall could not have been quieter if it had been empty. The words where words fail, music speaks have never been truer. Many congratulations to Auriel for having the courage to perform her own composition. The second half followed the theme of The Sherman Brothers and involved every child in Years 5-8 and was split into three medleys: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Mary Poppins. This was a lot of fun to put on and the children were fantastic. We enjoyed listening to solos from Tilly Lockhart, Grace Gregory, Maya de Alwis, Oliver de Alwis, Emma Buckle, Oliver Raymond, Scarlett Morris, Harry Rowland, Tim Hill and Tabitha Udy. I could not be prouder of the children for their efforts with these concerts and am incredibly grateful to them and their music teachers for all of the time they put into preparing for these performances.

HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION This year s House Music competition followed the theme of The Beatles with each House tackling one of the groups songs. sang Let it Be, performed Help!, tackled With a Little Help from my Friend and sang When I m Sixty-Four. The standard of performance from all houses was very good and when coupled together with the solo performances from Auriel Pawsey (), Emma Buckle (), Oliver Raymond (), Oliver de Alwis () the final decision was that were the outright winners and successfully defended the Britten Trophy. Well done to all Houses and in particular to. Many thanks to Terry Devine-King for agreeing to be our judge this year. PRE-PREP MUSIC CONCERT The Pre-Prep music concert took place as part of their prize giving celebrations on Thursday this week. This was a lovely occasion and it is always so nice to see children stand up to perform at these early stages of learning an instrument. It is all about confidence building and making performance part of the process of learning an instrument from a young age. The group songs were good fun and the drummers received tumultuous applause. I am very proud of all of the Pre-Prep for their hardwork in music this year and look forward to watching their progress next year. MUSIC LESSONS AT OBH A reminder to all that we offer music lessons on the following instruments at OBH: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Guitar (Electric, Acoustic and Bass), Drum Kit, Orchestral Percussion, Piano, Singing, Bagpipes and Harp. If anyone would like further details please contact me on toby.dunham@obh.co.uk. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS Well done to everyone who took Music Exams on Thursday. I look forward to reading the comments from the examiner but overall I think you should be very proud of how you did at such a late stage of the term.

News from Pre-Prep Years 1 & 2 This week has been a busy and very hot final week. The children have worked hard practising for their sports day and prize giving. Thursday saw the hottest day of the year so far and the children did brilliantly competing in their sports day events. They all enjoyed running against each other which showed a good deal of healthy competition. We have enjoyed playing with our new garden toys and the children would like to say a big thank you to the Friends of OBH for their generous contribution to the Pre-Prep garden. We would like to wish children and parents a very happy holiday and congratulate all the children on a very successful year.

Reception & Nursery Nursery and Reception have had an incredibly busy final week celebrating prize giving and enjoying a fantastic (if somewhat hot) sports day. We are all immensely proud of all our little ones and would like to wish all of the children and parents a fantastic summer holidays. Year 1 ICT Over the last two terms, Year 1 have made great progress with their programming using Scratch. On Wednesday, we were lucky to have Mrs Rice and some members of Year 5 in the ICT room at the same time, and the Year 5 children acted as teachers for the hour. Year 1 greatly enjoyed it and produced a variety of impressive animations. Reception

Cricket Rounders Report U13 A U10 A On a rather difficult pitch, the OBH girls batted first, scoring 11.5 rounders in their first innings. Several huge rounders were scored by Faith and Mia. Barnardiston found it difficult to get into their stride at the start of their innings but then clocked up some rounders, with OBH making some silly decisions and inaccurate fielding. BH scored 7.5 rounders, so were within reach of our The second batting innings went seriously wrong with Faith, Freya, Mia and Sophie all out cheaply. However, the team pulled together, did not panic and slowly managed to put on a further 10 rounders. Barnardiston had no answer to this and could not catch our total. A super final rounders match for the Year 8's - well done. Rounders U13 B This was a wonderful finale to a successful rounders season. The girls fielded tightly and batted with confidence and determination. A great result. Well done girls! Rounders U9A The girls tried hard against a very organised and competitive Barnardiston side. Plenty of work is required on fielding and catching skills to improve reaction times. Batting was erratic in the first innings. However there was a vast improvement in performance in the second half of the match, with more rounders being scored and considerably improved decision making. U11 A Rounders V. King s Ely This was the perfect day for rounders; the sun was shining and the girls were determined to win. They lost the toss and were in to bat first. The girls hit the ball well and took important chances to increase the score. When out in the field, I was delighted to see the girls working so hard together to ensure opposition were held to a low score. Their passing was accurate and their communication, although minimal, was very effective. The second innings was equally effective and the girls had a comfortable win. Well done! V. Barnardiston This was our last match of the season and right from the start, the weather was against us. We started the game quickly to ensure we could play as much as possible before the threatening thunder clouds descended upon us. The girls won the toss so decided to field first. After 20 good balls, they had managed to keep the score low through accurate and tight fielding. When in to bat, the girls made good contact and managed score a number of half rounders. At the end of the second innings the score was very close with only half a rounder between the teams. As the ground was still dry we decided to continue for another 10 good balls each. Once again, the girls held the opposition at first base and stopped them from scoring. This was a fantastic way to end the season and the girls should be proud of the progress they have made. Well done girls against a very strong team.

Eastern Athletics Championships This was a fantastic day for all the pupils concerned with this event. A whole term of practice and Athletics club has paid off. All the pupils achieved significant personal bests and their performance in the relay was error free. A really wonderful event and a great experience for these hard working children. Well done to: Barnaby Anderson Otto Bagshaw Oscar Brown Caspar Hall Sam Harrison Claudia Harrison Ted Pryke George Strutt Blake Weir U13 Girls Cricket v. Orwell Park In our second match of the season, the OBH girls Cricket team performed incredibly well. Having been coached at the beginning of the season by Mr Brett they bowled superbly well and fielded with confidence. On a beautiful evening there were catches a plenty and some fantastic runs scored. The thrill of playing on the Boys' 1st team wicket was amazing. We were in with a shout right to the last couple of balls. After 50 overs of cricket I was so impressed with their concentration and focus right to the end. I hope the girls have now got a taste for cricket and will enjoy more of the same next year.

Family Clay Pigeon Shoot & Picnic Parents & Pupils & Tennis Congratulations to Anna and Finn Milbank who won the Parents and Pupils tennis last Sunday. They played against Freddie and Sally Whitelaw, who won their group to get into the final. Congratulations to James and Henry Bevan who won the family Clay pigeon shoot on Wednesday evening. Second place went to Nigel and Edward Gambier with Sam Ponty and Tom Hyde Parker, Mr Drake and Harry Rowland coming in joint 3 rd place. A lovely way to spend a summers evening. Well done to all involved. Mixed Parents Hockey Well done to all the parents and children that took part. On Sunday morning the parents played their first game of mixed hockey on the new astro. It was fantastic to see such a good turnout and I hope that next term we can run these games on a regular basis. No doubt there were a few sore and stiff limbs the next morning!
