A busy week in the Stable Yard The joys of April weather have dictated that sunhats and sun cream have been temporarily put away and instead, children have had to locate their jumpers and coats. It is tricky to know what will come next. Regardless of the drop in temperature, the Middle School have not dropped the ball in the classroom. Classrooms are even buzzier than usual, and the children are clearly back in the swing of school life. We held our Middle School assembly this week. Certificates and prizes were awarded to Ismene Johnson, Sophie English and Amelia Drake for their impressive and eye catching posters that highlighted many positive and safe ways in which to play. They are displayed in 3EW so please do come and have a look. Further congratulations should be extended to Helena Pascalides and Luke McGrath for impressing with their handwriting and creative ideas in English while Darcey Reeve, Rory Hargreave and Florence Rook have gone the extra mile with their endeavours in maths. Well done, to the children who took music exams at the end of last term. Certificates were awarded in whole school assembly and the children were given the applause they deserved. Well done, to Ruby Cornish who achieved a merit in her Grade 1 Lamda drama exam. Year 3 have started their new history topic of Ancient Greece. The first Greek Myth they read is the quite brilliant Theseus and the Minotaur. The children really engaged in the story and they acted out the exciting story line in their drama lesson with Mrs Powell. They have created their own mythical creature which shows wonderful imagination, and these will be displayed in 3EW in the next few days once the finishing touches have been added. Year 5 and Dr Marshall visited the Middle School this morning and shared their story openers based on a holiday cottage. It gave Years 3 and 4 plenty of food for thought and they look forward to writing their own story beginnings next week. Various themes and settings are being discussed. Diary Dates Year 4 West Stow Tuesday 1st May Year 4 are looking forward to their visit to West Stow Anglo Saxon village on Tuesday 1 st May. They will be accompanied by Mr Gillott, Mr Pascalides and Mrs Powell. They will wear their OBH tracksuit tops and trainers. They will return within the school day, so Prep will take place as usual. Friday 4th May Wind in the Willows Theatre Workshop A theatre company is coming to OBH on Friday 4 th May and will be presenting a theatre workshop based on the well loved story Wind in the Willows. All the children from Years 1 to 6 will be involved and it promises to be an enjoyable afternoon. Rehearsals have started for the Blue Crystal, our Middle School Production. It is a musical and be warned, many of the songs are extremely catchy! Enjoy your weekend. Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides, Mr Gillott and Mrs Powell.

News from the Boarding House Earlier in the week Sienna Wheeler, Madison HM, Ella Pryke, Charlie Bidwell, Anthony HM, Mauro Villar, Charlie Hearn, Sophie English and Tiara Phiri went to Pizza Express to enjoy an evening out celebrating their success of being Star Boarders for Lent Term. Spero Sadly the sunshine from last week did not hold, but that has not dampened the spirits of our Sperites! The children continue to make the most of the grounds, enjoying their bikes, Rory's Place and the cricket nets. Then the weekend went off with a blast with the return of Lord Buckenham s Taskmaster. The children had a great time solving tasks and getting covered in a lot of gunk at the same time. If you have ever imagined carrying water from one bucket to the next with sieves and cones with holes in, then you can imagine how frustrated the teams were becoming throughout the evening. Even more so with Egg Golf and Apple Bobbing before painting pictures of the Headmaster and Scooby. Great entertainment was had by all! The winners were THE DUDES who enjoyed their prizes before retiring for the night. On Sunday we went to Brettenham for church before returning for a superb roast lunch and ice cream for pudding. We then had a little down time as full stomachs were not required for the afternoon, which saw all the boarders running around in big inflatable balls. Yes, Krashball was back.and forth and the boys and girls bounced and tumbled in all directions in the warm afternoon sun. Rest was required in the evening with a relaxing supper followed by playing in the grounds or riding on bikes for some, before bed time. Thank you to all the staff and pupils who took part and made the weekend very enjoyable for all. Wednesday night was particularly noteworthy - the girls outnumbered the boys So there was lots of dancing...obviously! Birthday Congratulations to Francis Topham-Smith who enjoyed a super birthday party on Tuesday evening with all the Year 6 boarders. It was great to see them enjoying the usual delights laid on by the kitchen before getting outside to play in the grounds and the cricket nets whilst others enjoying smashing the tennis balls backwards and forwards over the nets on the astro.

Pre-Prep & Nursery when I grow up I want to be. A peek at our week Goldilocks has enjoyed her time in Hedgehogs over the past few weeks. The children have enjoyed making stick puppets and beware of the bear posters this week. They have also been writing in their special books, Next week they will have some tiny visitors coming to stay!!!!!! You might even need a magnifying glass to find them Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Ryan Surguy George Firth Dougie Abbott James Bolton This week Grasshopper class have been exploring The Water Lily Pond by Claude Monet. The children looked at different story books exploring this set of paintings and also spent some time taking photos of the school ponds. Next the children began a class project to create their own version of one of these paintings with each child representing their own section in their own way. When you have a moment please feel free to come and have a look at our project, it is displayed in our classroom. We are very pleased with it! This week Acorn class have been busy using fruits and vegetables for different lessons. In science they planted sprouting potatoes in the Pre-Prep garden and in art they created pictures of the four seasons using the fruit and vegetables. They have been working really hard in numeracy to learn and understand the multiples of 2,5 and 10. Using their new favourite way of recording, writing on the desks, they looked at how a multiplication sentence can be represented in different ways. Woodpeckers have been working incredibly hard on their Dinosaur topic this week. They have researched, planned and written dinosaur themed children s stories, which they hope to share with the Nursery and Reception children next week. They have been working on non-chronological reports and created fact files about their favourite dinosaurs. Do check out the huge dinosaur skeleton outside the classroom, displaying all the facts the children have learnt. Birthdays Happy Birthday to Casper David who turned 7 on Monday and Clara Webster who turned 6 on Thursday. We enjoyed hearing about your delicious birthday breakfasts! Funny faces All the children in the Pre-Prep enjoyed making faces out of leaves, mud, bark and other things they could find in the woods, garden and school grounds. We have left them all in the playground for you all to stumble across, but I think the wind might have taken a few from us! Have a good weekend. Camilla Webster

From the Director of Sport.. Cricket Whites If your child returns home from a match in an OBH cricket shirt please can it be washed and returned to school the next morning. Any child boarding after a cricket match will have their shirt and trousers washed by the school laundry. Day children must take their dirty trousers and jumpers home, and return them ready for the next match. All children are expected to wear a school blazer all cricket matches. Girls Sport U12 Suffolk Netball Tournament Eight Year 6 and Year 7 girls travelled to St Joseph s College on a sunny Sunday morning for a competitive netball tournament organised by Suffolk Netball. It was a great experience for all of the girls to watch and play against some of the best young netballers in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex. The girls played in hot conditions and did incredibly well especially those that were playing a year above. OBH had a fantastic win against St Joseph s and some other close matches. I was incredibly proud of how the girls conducted themselves and was good to see OBH out there competing. Thank you girls for getting out of bed early and to the parents who gave up their Sunday morning to support. U13B Girls Cricket v Holmwood House The girls were very excited to be playing cricket and were resplendent in their whites. They chose to bowl and opened with some fine bowling from Elle Jeffery, Isadora Cutler, Annabel Ball and Shiyao Lui. Although the first four overs were expensive, Holmwood had clearly sent out their first batting pair who were excellent at batting off OBH s very good deliveries. As the match wore on the girls got their eye in and took three catches. Well done Mimi Raja and Shiyao! The rest of the fielders managed to stop several good balls going for 4. At the end of the innings, Holmwood were on After a quick team chat, the girls set out to bat with determination and unfortunately the heavens opened, the wicket quickly became unplayable as it was very slippery and so the match abandoned. The OBH score was 134 after nearly 6 overs and so it was on track for being a good tight match! Girls Cricket U11 A v Holmwood House Result - Lost by 3 runs What a great game to begin the season with as both teams took to the field in the warm sunshine. They fielded first and bowled with good accuracy. Jemima Banks took three wickets in quick succession and this pegged the opposition back after scoring some early boundaries. Holmwood finished on 170 and then OBH began to bat. The girls found it more difficult to hit the ball to the boundary and therefore began to run between the wickets more easily, scoring more runs. Towards the end of their innings, the pressure began to build and they were in a strong position. OBH needed to score a few more runs to relieve that pressure but the bowling was tight. Unfortunately, they lost the game on the last ball but this has now provided the girls with ammunition as to how to chase a total and also defend a score until the last ball of the game has been bowled. Very well played girls; continue to develop your skills in practice sessions. U11B Girls Cricket v Holmwood House On Wednesday the U11Bs kicked off their season with a pairs softball match against Holmwood House at home. It was played in good spirits with lots of learning taking place for both teams. They were first in to bat and managed to score 163, despite losing three wickets. In the field they bowled well and fielded sensibly. Although OBH missed a couple of catches they did take a fantastic 7 wickets. The final score was , a 9 run win for OBH. Well played girls, a promising start to the season.

Boys Sport 1 st XI v Ipswich The 1 st XI made an encouraging start to the season despite losing narrowly against Ipswich. Bowling first, OBH started very well as Charlie Bidwell took a few early wickets. Ipswich then recovered to 137 for 7 from 25 overs but not before Charlie returned to the attack and took three more scalps to finish with 5 for 8. In their reply, Oliver Stanton scored an impressive 57 but wickets fell regularly at the other end and they finished 15 runs short of the target. 1 st XI v Holmwood House Batting first on a good pitch, Oliver Stanton again impressed with 22 as they made a solid start. OBH then lost a cluster of wickets to leave them in trouble at 45 for 5, but Ben Perry and Freddie de la Rue started to rebuild the innings with some intelligent batting and at 88 for 6 with six overs left, they were preparing for an accelerated finish but the heavens opened and sadly the game was abandoned. 3rd XI v Holmwood House The team were playing a 10 a-side pairs game which gave every boy the chance to bat. All batsmen contributed to the score with some particularly aggressive hitting from Javier Aragon and Freddie Bidwell, OBH lost a few wickets playing around the straight ball but posted a pleasing 106 off their allotted 20 overs. 2nd XI 2 nd XI v Ipswich OBH lost by 163 runs This was a very tough opening fixture for the boys. Winning the toss OBH decided to field first. Ipswich batted very well only losing three batsmen in their innings and putting on a total of 226 runs. OBH went into bat after tea and it was not long until Ipswich got their first few wickets. There were a couple of sensible batting performances by OBH but the opposition were too strong and came away with a deserved victory. 2 nd XI v Holmwood House A sensible batting performance was very important and patience was key for the OBH team. The opening pair started off well putting on a steady run rate. As the overs went down the OBH team started to find the gaps and by the end of the innings the boy s reached a total of 146 runs. The boy s went into tea with a positive mindset to win the game however, the game wasn t able to restart due the heavy rain. Sadly, over tea the clouds blackened and they found themselves abandoning the game before the wettest walk back to a minibus they have ever experienced!

From the Director of Sport.. Colts C Colts A v Holmwood House Result Won by 9 wickets What a great start to the season! The Colts A team impressed in many ways, both in the field and at the crease. There are obviously areas to look at and improve on, when they return to the training ground, but this was a solid performance and a well-deserved victory. Holmwood batted aggressively from the start but OBH were alert in the field and with each wicket taken, the pressure built on the visiting team. In reply, the A team set a fast runrate. Fine technique and good shot selection saw the team achieve 55 runs within 6 overs then the rain arrived! The game looked like it might be abandoned. Fortunately, a break in the weather then allowed the boys back on the field and victory came quickly, with more destructive batting and good running between the wickets. Well done, to all the boys! Colts B Cricket v Holmwood House Holmwood 110 for 0 wickets after 20 overs OBH 76 for 3 wickets after 20 overs Their first game of the season saw the boys well organised and more than willing to put into practice all that they had trained for over the past week. Their bowling was reasonably accurate and fielding stood up to some strong batting from their opponents. When it came for OBH to bat the boys equipped themselves with diligence and fortitude; although perhaps they were a little too conservative at times and did not push the run rate on sufficiently to put pressure on the opposition. On the whole a reasonably sound performance which they can build upon. Much hard work lies ahead but the boys are up for this particular challenge. Colts C v Holmwood House The Colts Cs entertained Holmwood House on Wednesday afternoon for a match which started in pleasant sunshine but ultimately was abandoned amidst driving rain and wind. Thanks to excellent batting from Alexander Pascalides (16 not out) and Ben Stokes 28 (run out), OBH amassed 142 for 7 off their 20 overs, while Holmwood House were 60 for 1 off 8 overs when play was halted. The visitors would probably have won but it was a promising opening display from the home team.

And finally Dear Parents, The term is very much in full swing with a great deal going on both inside and outside the classroom. My personal highlight this week was the Chamber Concert which showcased some of our most musically talented children. The level of performance, and range of pieces was extraordinary from Vivaldi, Purcell and Mozart to Lennon and McCartney and even Pulp fiction! I always enjoy watching the look of relief on parents faces as their child finishes a flawlessly played piece. They have gone through agonies while the child remained relaxed, composed and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing! Next Monday sees a slightly different musical note hit with the House Shout. The competition is always friendly - but intense, I can t wait to see what offerings await us this year! There are still one or two places left at the Lord Mayor's Reception for OBH at Mansion House on Thursday. If you are going to be in London then do let us know and come along. Next Sunday is our Confirmation Service with the Bishop at Thorpe Morieux at 4.00 p.m. - followed by a reception for all friends and families. Once again, I hope you can join us for this important event. One final remainder. As next weekend is an 'In' weekend, the Bank Holiday Monday will be a normal school day and we will be running as any other Monday. Enjoy the weekend Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
