!World of Work Talk Monday 13 th November Mrs Rebecca McVittie Investment Director Fidelity Asset Management Spotty Dotty Day Friday 17 November The pupils in years 6, 7 and8 were very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend a World of Work talk given by Mrs Rebecca McVittie on Monday evening this week. Mrs McVittie is based in the City of London but travels throughout the world in connection with her career with Fidelity Asset Management specialising in investment in emerging markets. I think many of the children were curious about the content of the talk, but what quickly become apparent was just how fascinating the work is. Mrs McVittie spoke about her early education as a classicist and the fact that she was considering Law as a career, when a holiday job in the City was offered to her and the rest became history! The children listened intently and when asked if they would like to ask any questions, amazed the staff with their intelligent and thoughtful questions, which included - the possible impact of Brexit on investment - at what age can you start investing with Fidelity? To, what is the gender mix at your firm? I was certainly impressed with the depth of thinking skills on display. My thanks to Rebecca for taking the time out of her very busy schedule to talk to our children (Rebecca was flying out to Switzerland at 4.00 am the following morning!) the children were really fascinated and totally engaged in the subject. If you feel able to offer a World of Work talk to our children next year, please do contact Mrs Jo Riddleston, who would be delighted to hear from you. What a lot of spots! The school was full of colour in support of Children in Need. Beginning with a thought provoking assembly about how the charity supports disadvantaged children in the UK the day moved on to the awards for the best spotty outfit in Pre-Prep, Middle and Upper School. With so many fantastic costumes it was a tricky decision. In morning break the children assembled in their Houses for the annual tug o war. Loud cheers rang out as the teams took the strain., supported by an energetic and motivating Mrs Warren with Mr Gillott as anchor, were a force to be reckoned with and were the overall winners. 6 News from the Stable Yard Looking ahead It has been an important week in the Middle School. Without exception, the children in Years 3 and 4 have excelled in the recent CAT tests. Their concentration and application has been quite outstanding, and I am very proud of them all. There will be an opportunity to find out how your child has performed in our Parent Meeting during the Lent term. Outside of the classroom, the children have been busy rehearsing for the Autumn Concert as well as our end of term production of The Worst Kids in the World The children are becoming more confident with the music and lyrics and their singing skills were complimented during our recent rehearsal, by Mr O Sullivan. During playtime, we are having a football free week. The children are being encouraged to find alternative ways of entertaining themselves. Bug homes, animal kingdoms and moss and leaf beds seem to be the hot favourites. It is lovely to see new friendships developing. This really is Prep School life at its very best. The Autumn Concert was a resounding success! Well done, to all the Year 3 and 4 children who all sang their hearts out and sounded amazing. In my option, Mr Roberts definitely saved the best till last! After the excitement of Spotty Dotty Day, I wish you all a peaceful weekend. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott and Mr Pascalides Swimming Our usual swimming session at Wattisham will not take place on Friday 24 th November as all the Year 3 and 4 girls are boys will be involved in the fixtures against Culford School. Christmas Fair Looking ahead to the end of term, we look forward to seeing many of you at The OBH Christmas Fair on Friday 1 st December. Open Boarding Weekend There will be more details to follow on our Open boarding weekend - Rock n Roll Dreams Come True which will take place on Saturday 2 nd and Sunday 3 rd December. Your children are most welcome to join our boarding community and I am certain it will be great fun. Christmas Jumper Day With Christmas Jumper Day, Christmas Lunch and two evening performances of The Worst Kids in the World, this term is sure to end with a bang! Carol Service Our term will culminate in our Christmas Carol Service at St Peter and St Paul s Church in Lavenham. This is always my favourite church service of the year and I am sure this year will not disappoint.

Boarding The boarders have enjoyed a week full of rehearsals for the concert which they thoroughly enjoyed taking part in, as well as preparing their spotty dotty outfits for Children in Need. The number of spotty dots available was incredible so much so that the nurse and matrons wondered if a new epidemic had arrived at OBH. Great enjoyment was had by all and the best dressed in each form throughout the Pre-Prep and Prep School were awarded prizes during 6JM s Assembly on Friday morning. Spero We have had a happy week in Spero. The boarders completed a puzzle that glows in the dark!! Harriet came to visit on Wednesday night she was especially keen to catch up with her friends from last Summer s Owls Club. She had made some special Spero cakes for snack and then read stories to the girls. The boys and girls are getting excited about the end of term already and with play rehearsals happening regularly, and the other evening activities as well as Headmaster s suppers being consumed, the children are enjoying all the things on offer. During the last two weeks of term the children will be decorating their dorms in glitzy materials and preparing for a stunning evening of entertainment at the annual FIRESIDE show. Children can bring in Christmas decorations for dorms after the next Home Weekend. Please remember only battery operated decorations. Keep practising boys and girls for that fun evening ahead. Dorm prizes are still on offer and individual prizes will be awarded to members of each house each term, for consistent efforts throughout the boarding community. Looking ahead we have the Open Boarding Weekend coming up on the 02 December with Rock n Roll Dreams coming true for all.

Autumn Concert Informal Concert Over 90 pupils from Years 3-8 took part in our Autumn Concert this year, performing to a packed Britten Hall. A great evening was had by all, and every ensemble, group and choir were a credit to all the hard work put in over this term so far. We started with the School Orchestra who played a rousing Radetzky March, with plenty of noisy military percussion, and a beautiful Scarborough Fair. Every member of the Jazz Band bravely stood up and performed a solo in their piece (wow!) and our Wind Band, much less experienced than last year s, gave us an indication of some excellent potential. Our three string groups, from beginners to advanced, all performed with beautiful tone, but with great energy as the music required, impressing everybody. Our percussion-based groups gave us a very exciting Pirates of the Caribbean (Baird s Band) and hugely energetic and tight performances from both Samba Bands, the juniors proving that you can never have too much fruit, and the seniors providing a great riff and rhythm. The Rock Band really sounded like they Smelt like Teen Spirit, with their suitably grungy version of the Nirvana classic. The Chantelles make a beautiful sound, and the atmosphere of Pasadena showed this with very enjoyable string and percussion accompaniment. The concert ended with our Junior Choir (all Year 3-4) who proved, with great energy and enthusiasm, that it is possible to sing four songs at the same time. Every group performed with great merit, and thanks are due, not only to the pupils, but their teachers from the OBH peripatetic staff, who have been working tirelessly this term to put these performances together. Our third informal concert of term took place in the Old Gym on Friday, where performers from Year 4 to Year 8 gave us a very enjoyable recital of music. There were beginners Prep Test pieces from children performing for the first time, and advanced pieces by potential future Scholarship candidates. Every piece was performed to a very high level, and we had a good variety of instruments on display. The children should all be proud of what they achieved. Our next and final informal concert of this term is on Tuesday 28 th November. Anyone who learns an instrument or sings is welcome to take part, and it is a great opportunity to perform in a low-pressure environment to a friendly audience, particularly for first-timers! Any of our exam candidates who would like a dry run of one of their pieces pre-exam should also consider having a go. Please ask your teacher to sign you up if you re ready to perform. Well done all! Keith Roberts

Pre-Prep & Nursery A Peek at our Week Hedgehogs are looking at night-time and darkness this week, so lots of stars, moons and sparkles! They have had great fun painting night skies with their hands and it got very messy! Hedgehogs and Grasshoppers, together, had a great time Mr Drakes outside classroom on Wednesday - and are always very excited to be there. The children enjoyed making small houses for little animals using sticks, leaves, mud and anything they could get their hands on. They even made little beds for the animals using leaves and moss! Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Casper David Isabella Simcock Year 1 Mary Hall Reception Valentina David Nursery Arabella Kendall (photo next week!) Grasshoppers began their magical me topic this week. On Monday they went on a woodland walk to find their own magic wands. Once they had been transformed, the children used them to do some magical dancing and write letters in the air. They also created a poem about what might be found in a wizard s pocket. This week Acorns have designed their own Inuit houses using Polar proof materials and written diary entries for a day in the life of an Inuit. Woodpeckers were extremely privileged to have had a real Nightingale nurse come and visit us on Monday afternoon the lovely Mrs Easdale. She chatted to the children about what is was like training to be a Nightingale nurse and showed the class her FN badge and uniform. They also had a great deal of fun learning about Alexander Bell in science, experimenting with cup and string as telephones - they observed that it was easier to hear when the string was tight! Birthday Congratulations We had three big birthdays this week! James Bolton and Victoria shared their birthday on Wednesday with James turning 4 and Victoria turning 6 and William Phillips is celebrating his 7th birthday today! We hope you all have very exciting

obh mail Active Acorns In PE this week, the Year 1s have continued with their gymnastics and put their skills they have learnt this term into routines. They were in pairs and told that they had to include a jump, balance, roll and a little dance! They were busy practising with their partners when Mr Drake and his Year 8 PE class arrived to help. The children (including the Year 8's) were so excited! They amazed me with their confidence and how they performed their routines in front of everyone! It was then the turn of the Year 8's to perform with the Year 1's giving a thumbs up or down to their performances!!! A great lesson and it was lovely to see the 1LA working with the top of the school! Mrs. Phillips Seeing Spots All the Pre-Prep children had a lovely day wearing spots to support Children in Need today. We joined the main school for a special assembly in the morning and went up to watch the House tug-o-war at break time. The children stood in their Houses and cheered their fellow Housemates on! Well done, to everyone for the fantastic outfits and costumes, and an extra thank you to those of you who, like me, have been sewing and gluing dots on for the last few nights! Have a lovely weekend. Camilla Webster

Boys Sport U13A Boys v St John s (Lost 25-20) What a game this was! Two teams battling it out in all areas of the field. The rucking from our boys was impressive and rather than committing too many to these contact areas we established a far more consistent defensive strategy which they found hard to break down especially in the first half. With two disallowed tries from St Johns in the first half, OBH found themselves leading 15 5 at half time. It was going to be a dramatic finish to the game as St. John s rallied at the beginning of the second half and drew level after some outstanding defense from our boys. Unfortunately we could not establish enough grip on the ball and struggled to score again after St. John s took a slender lead. Well done, to the boys for their increased awareness and organisation throughout the game. U13B v St. John s (Lost 6-2) The boys were up for another challenging game in which they would have to play at their best and continue to improve in all aspects of the game. We began with some strong running and passed with some accuracy. When the pressure was applied by the opposition we needed to tackle more convincingly in order to stop their powerful runners and then work hard in the rucks and mauls in order to retain or win back the ball. The boys will need to be positive in future games and continue to work hard in practice so that they develop these skills and score more tries in the future. U12A v St. John s OBH 2 St. John s 2 On Wednesday, the boys played in a very tough match against St. John s. It took twenty seconds for the opposition to score the first try illustrating how difficult the game was going to be. It was not long for OBH to get into the game and the match became very physical with strong tackles being put in from both teams. OBH scored a couple of great tries with the game suddenly in the balance. The last moments of the game demonstrated how far the boys have come on this season with a resilient defence stopping a final St. John s attack. U11Av Framlingham Prep Result: Lost Score For: 3 Against 4 OBH travelled to Framlingham to play a seven-aside fixture on Wednesday. The teams were evenly balanced but it was OBH who scored early in the game, due to quick thinking and good lines of running as they attacked down the slope. However, the home side were quick to respond and began to dominate at contact. As a result, they got back in the game with scores of their own in fact leading 3-2 at the break. The second half saw some excellent play from both teams, including some lovely switch passes from OBH. Both sides scored again, producing an exciting finish to the encounter. Unfortunately, despite valiant efforts, OBH were just unable to cross the line as they attacked in the last moments of the game. U11B v Framlingham Prep Result: Won Score For: 10 Against 1 Due to a mismatch in numbers, a couple of the A team had to play for the B team in this encounter. That being said, Framlingham were a big, physical side and the contest was quite even, early on in the first half. It was great to see how determined the whole OBH squad was in their efforts to stop the opposition moving forwards - and how this frustrated the home team. OBH began to dominate and score some lovely tries. Framlingham got on the score sheet too, but it was OBH who controlled most of the possession. They showed some lovely lines of running and some excellent passing, which resulted in a few more scores in the second half. The game was managed superbly by the referee and all those involved enjoyed the contest.

U10A Rugby v Framlingham Prep U9B Ipswich Tournament What a cracking game of rugby! The boys played with heart, fire and spirit and made a strong Framlingham team work hard for their victory. Even though we eventually lost 7-5, the match could have gone either way. As usual, we were slow to start and conceded two soft tries early on, but then we stepped up the intensity and skill level, and were only one try behind at half time. Archie Miller and Charlie Harrison were our two try scorers, finishing off great work from Joseph Bates, who made countless darting breaks towards the try line. In the last play of the match, we were 6-5 down with a free pass in a promising position, though sadly we knocked on and Framlingham then scored from the advantage. That s rugby! Well played to all the team. Boys U9A at the Ipswich Hockey Festival For once the sun shone at the Ipswich U9 festival! This at least gave us a bright start, our first opponents were Ipswich school and although Ipswich wee a talented side, we did not help ourselves with a slightly slow start. We lost the game 3-0 but the boys promised a more tenacious attitude in their next game. The Abbey were next and the game was full of chances and opportunities, but neither side could score, Orwell Park and Culford followed in the same suit, with three hard fought draws. It was hugely pleasing to see how far the boys have come this term, they have worked hard throughout the seasons to improve their basic skills. I look forward to Culford next Friday! OBH Under 9Bs Hockey at the Ipswich Prep School Hockey Tournament OBH had a successful afternoon at the Ipswich Prep School Hockey Tournament. They were first up against Ipswich and worked hard to come away with a 1-0 win. The next game was against Culford and it was great to see the boys pass the ball well and look to move into space. The game again ended 1-0 to OBH. The next game was a tough match against South Lee. Both teams had their chances however, the game finished 0-0. The final game of the day was against Orwell Park and again this was a difficult game for the boys. In the last few minutes the opposition were able to find the back of the net twice and Orwell Park came away as the match winners. Well done, to all of the boys who played.

Girls Sport U13 B Girls v St John s This really was a game of two halves! We were clearly outclassed by the St John s side, with four of their 1st VII players in the team they dominated despite some fairly physical defending. We decided to mix the girls up in the second half to give us more of a competitive game, and with the game much more even, the girls had a chance to play some fast flowing hockey with the St John s team. Although the first half was a character building half of hockey, it was brilliant to see the OBH girls scoring in the second half, credit to them for keeping positive throughout, well done U12A v St John s A great game of Hockey played by both teams in a very even, but tantalising match. Play was end to end and the ball pace was quick. St John s were first to score & OBH responded well and with determination. St John s were quick in open play and managed to score again. However, we challenged them and were able to create lots of attacking opportunities to score. A brilliant Penalty corner routine meant we were 2 all with 7 minutes to play. St John s scored from a quick break and OBH did everything they could to equalise including scoring from another penalty corner, which did not stand as it was above the backboard. The girls continued to fight hard for a third goal, but unfortunately couldn t quite achieve it & the match finished 2-3 to St John s. Really well played to all. U11A Triangular v Framlingham Prep and Moreton Hall Well.what can I say? These girls have been amazing, they work tirelessly in training and show great work rate and determination in matches. This really is paying dividends with great results. The latter being 1-0 wins against Framlingham AND Moreton Hall on Wednesday afternoon. In both matches we were unlucky not to have won by 4 or 5 goals, but great goalkeeping by both oppositions prevented us from scoring more goals. The girls are now looking forward to taking on their parents in the matches on Saturday! U9B Netball Tournament at Ipswich School The girls were very excited for the tournament and arrived in bright spirits to a sunny Ipswich. The girls have really improved over the term and this was proved in an excellent win against Ipswich Prep School. The level of netball played was good and there were a couple of outstanding performances by Florence Rook and Claudia Price. A great afternoon of fun was had by all! U11B v Framlingham Prep In an evenly sided match from the outset the girls battled well. It was OBH who scored first and Framlingham quickly upped their intensity. Our defence and goal keeper saw a lot of action in a frenzied flurry of attacks. Unfortunately we let one through, and the match was then 1-1. After half time, OBH had a lot of the possession but sent aimless balls from the halfway line into the D and didn't wait for support before attacking. This meant that Framlingham were always coming straight back at us and after they made a few changes their strength of attack intensified again. Framlingham took an amazing shot from the top of the D which was unstoppable and so finished the match the victors 2-1. A good match, girls we must remember space and to use both sides of the pitch. A good battle, and a good game. U9A Netball Tournament The girls had a wonderful afternoon of netball and played some of the best netball they have ever played. I was quite taken back at some of the passages of play; the improvement was obvious to see. Our first match was against Culford which unfortunately resulted in a 2-0 loss but the positive was that we had plenty of opportunities, but could not get the ball through the net. We moved onto Ipswich School and had an excellent 2-0 win! A fantastic result with excellent defending all the way up court and Ismene Johnson converting the shots! We knew the last game would be hard against Orwell Park and although it ended in a 3-1 loss, this is where the girls really stepped up and proved to me and themselves what they are capable of. What impresses me most about these girls is the effort and determination that they show. Excellent work girls, I am very proud of you all.

Framlingham Swimming Gala On Monday evening an excited team of 24 swimmers headed to Framlingham for their annual swimming gala. After a warm-up the events began with the individual medley for the U13 swimmers. With a further 37 events for swimmers to take part in including individual 40m freestyle, backstroke and breast stroke, 20m butterfly and team relays. Competing against teams from Finborough School, Framlingham Prep, Holmwood House and Orwell Park, the swimmers all swam their races with great determination. There were some outstanding individual and team performances. Our final placing was 4 th overall. Girls experience a masterclass of lacrosse from an England international! What a great experience for the girls this was, and judging by their intense concentration and effort throughout they seemed to really enjoy the experiences of playing a new team sport. The Year 2 girls especially, could not get enough and by the time this session ended, they were asking for more! Our thanks to the Benenden coaches for travelling such a long way to come and see us, and I hope that we will be able to visit their school in the next year. County Netball Congratulations A huge congratulations to Madison Haworth McKenna on her selection for the Suffolk Development Squad. She has done incredibly well in her first year of trials and battled it out against over 80 other girls! Year 2 Rugby I had the pleasure of running a rugby session with the Year 2 boys this afternoon and judging by their enthusiasm and effort they really seemed to enjoy the experience! We started with some simple passing drills, which were closely followed by some agility and footwork drills before they turned their attention on the big yellow tackle cylinders, which for twenty minutes they absolutely pounded! (and on occasions me!) A brilliant afternoon and I look forward to the next one. Nick Drake

And finally Dear Parents, I hope you have enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading about the Lord Mayor s Show last weekend. It was a real triumph. To be invited to take part in such a spectacular show was a real honour and an experience all those involved will never forget. I know I am biased (and I love the stripes!) but I would definitely have given our float best in show. I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the children, staff and parents who came together to make the whole project so enjoyable and so successful the OBH team at its best. Equally pleasing was the Autumn Concert last night the standard of performance has risen without a doubt. We have a very talented and dedicated group of music teachers here and, under the inspirational leadership of Mr. Roberts, the future looks very bright. I thought the Middle School choir that closed the show were amazing!. All of the children in the Prep School have been busy this week with CAT tests and the Year 8s have their first mock CE week coming up. Gently bubbling away underneath are rehearsals for the Pre- Prep Nativity, the Carol Service and The Worst Kids in the World but the Christmas festivities need to wait for a few more weeks. There is still a great deal of work to be done. This term s Open Boarding Weekend Rock n Roll Dreams ComeTrue is undoubtedly going to be the biggest and best ever. It is a brilliant opportunity for your children to have an initial experience of boarding and it is always amazing fun. Spaces in some dorms are limited so watch out for the letter early next week! Finally, thank you all for supporting Children in Need. We have all had a fun day whilst raising funds for such an important cause. I look forward to seeing parents playing against their children in the Girls and Boys U11 parent matches tomorrow Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
