News from the Middle School I have been particularly proud of all the Middle School children this week. Not only have they worked incredibly hard, they have also hosted three prospective Deputy Heads and four candidates for the Head of Music position. They have smiled, asked questions and proved themselves to be the very best ambassadors for our school. Mr O Sullivan popped down to the Middle School to add his thanks and praise for the children. Within our Science topic of healthy bodies, we introduced Year 3 to Mr Skeleton and had great fun labelling different bones with coloured post it notes. In Maths, we have worked on our column subtraction techniques and have applied our understanding to solving more complicated money problems. Tricky homophones have been our focus in English and we have recognised many different examples which are now on display in our classrooms. Year 4 Year 4 have worked hard to complete their junk model tractors this week ready to be collected and entered in to Suffolk Show. They have also enjoyed their practical science opportunities looking at how light travels. Following on from our work on Why the Whales Came the children have also written some beautiful descriptions of being lost in the fog. We hope you enjoy reading both William and Edward s extracts. Happy Birthday to Hugo Harrison this week who kindly shared a very chocolatey number nine birthday cake 3EW made delicious fruit kebabs in Food Technology and we reminded ourselves of those delicious Super Foods. We were even able to link in some maths work looking at pattern and sequences. A reminder that Year 3 parent meetings are next week. Please do sign up for a slot if you have not already done so. I wish you all an enjoyable weekend now that the sun has finally decided to make an appearance. Mrs Gillott Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides, Mr and with us. It was delicious!

Year 4 Creative Writing Lost in the Fog By William Roberts Yesterday I was sailing in a rough sea. It was raining hard. There were colossal waves. Lightning was zapping down. A huge wave knocked me into the current. There were rocks appearing and the boat was going to sail into them. Gulp! I turned the boat but it skinned the rocks. Bump! My boat was leaking. I bailed but it did not work. I d be swimming with the fishes if I didn t find land quick. Suddenly there was land. My boat would not make it. I would have to swim. When the boat was nearly underwater that s when I leapt into the water. I swam as quickly as I could. The waves were sucking me under, but that didn t stop me. Finally I reached an island. I had to build a shelter for the night and find food too. I needed to get sticks for my den. I carefully built my shelter. I can tick that off my list. Now food. I went up to the main land to get some food. Suddenly the fog started to appear everywhere. I needed to get back to the den quickly. A dark figure went quickly past. I could not see them. There were more of them. They all disappeared into the fog. There was a loud cackle and chains rattled. The fog disappeared and I ran back to the den. I told myself I need to get off this island. The wind blew down my den. Then sand went in my eyes. I could not see anything and the fog built back up again. Lost at Sea By Edward Raymond Gracie and I were only still out there fishing because the giant sea bass gave us hope. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gracie s mouth, wide open with terror. What is it? I said. Gracie didn t reply. I turned around. There was a great grey wall of fog and that wasn t all it was getting closer, fast. We tried to row as quickly as we could but it was too late. The mist was all around us. Gracie was really panting now. I tried to calm her down but it didn t work so I shouted: Don t worry Gracie, I can still hear the Scilly Rocks. We went silent and I was right. Every few seconds, you could hear the breakers, hitting the great rock. Soon, it started to get dark. That made us more relaxed but we knew that the fog was still there. Even I knew now we were lost.

Boarding Informal Concert: 3rd March This was a delightful event with many young singers entertaining us with a wide variety of repertoire. At the other end of the spectrum we were able to enjoy singing and piano performances from some of the more senior musicians in the school. There were also performances on the drum-kit, flute and saxophone as well as the violin. True to form the children introduced themselves beautifully and encouraged each other with smiles and applause. It was lovely to have so many performers that we will in future potentially need additional dates. Our performers were: Tomas Villar, Bryce Surguy, Charlie Lock, Izzie Lock, Oscar Brown, Nolly Mannion -Miles, Charlie Harrison, Lottie English, George Romer-Lee, George Roberts, Florence Rook, Rose Williams, Oliver Pryce, Phoebe Thurlow and Margaux Brown There has been much excitement this week with the children looking forward to collecting deliveries from the school office for a variety of ball gowns, dinner jackets, masks, etc. for tomorrow night s Masquerade Ball as well as much chat about who is wearing what, how hair is being styled and who will get to the chocolate fountain first! All will be revealed next week!.

Pre-Prep & Nursery Stars of the Week A Peek at our Week All the staff had so much to tell me this week about what they have been up to, that I thought I would leave their snippets in their words for a change. Nursery have been very busy this week exploring seeds as part of our spring & new life topic. We began the week by creating lovely sunflowers using sunflower seeds and dolly pegs to print the petals. We have created our own mini green houses, which we have planted 'magic beans' in and are going to monitor them over the next couple of weeks to observe what happens to them. ~ Mrs Keeling In Reception, we have been busy creating butterflies, caterpillars and bumblebees for our number garden and are thrilled to discover that our runner bean seeds have sprouted roots - we have enjoyed studying them closely using magnifying glasses. We have also written instructions for how to plant a bean! ~ Mrs Hambling Congratulations to our Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1LA Year 1LP Reception Nursery Wilf Abbott Manu Gosling Rose Pooley Imogen McVittie Valentina David Year 1P have had a busy week in maths, learning all about time. From ordering days, months and seasons to telling the time, using o'clock and half past! The children have also been writing their own amusing stories based on the Pigeon books by Mo Williams. ~ Miss Piggott Year 1A have started learning the story of 'Goldilocks and the three bears'. We have learnt the story with actions and have made the characters using hard boiled eggs. We also played 'what's the time Mr Wolf?' in the play ground when we were learning to tell the time. ~ Mrs Allison Year 2 have been working hard on their new research projects in ICT, with themes ranging from the Spice Girls to Mustard! We are going to use powerpoint to present our research at the end of term. The children are very exciting about this and are putting a lot of energy and effort into their research. ~ Mrs Webster We had a bumper 4 birthdays in the Pre-Prep this week. Unfortunately, Barney Dunham and George Firth were not in on Monday, so Birthday Celebration we will do their candles soon. Ruben Steinberg and Wilf Abbott came up for their candles and we all wished them a very Happy Birthday! Camilla Webster

We look forward to seeing you there. Year 8 Scholars visit Pre- Prep Toddle Waddle Tuesday 21 st March 2.00 pm Nursery & Reception 2.15 pm Year 1 & 2 On Tuesday 21 st March we have our annual Toddle Waddle. Older children may like to run but anyone is welcome to walk it. This year, we are running and walking in aid of The OSCAR Foundation, our school charity. Sponsorship forms have already been sent home so it would be helpful to have them returned as soon as possible. The children are invited to dress up for the event and should come to school in uniform, with an outfit in a named bag anything goes! Parents are very welcome and can toddle if they want! Our Baby & Toddler group will be doing their own Toddle Waddle earlier in the day at am. Easter Afternoon Tea Thursday 23 rd March 2.30 pm Our Pre-Prep Easter Afternoon Tea is on Friday 23 rd March at 2.30 pm You can look forward to some Easter themed performances from all the classes and some tasty afternoon tea, prepared by the children. Please could you pop a note on the list outside your classroom, so we know how many of you to expect from each family. I do hope you can join us. This week we welcomed our post scholarship pupils, Freddie Garfoot, Charlotte Rowland and George Whitelaw into the Pre- Prep department. All three pupils helped during the week in all of the classes. It was lovely to have them with us and we know that they enjoyed the experience. I hope that we have given them a good insight into the teaching profession!

From the Sports Desk. Framlingham College U18 1st Boys and Girls Visit On Thursday we had the pleasure of hosting the Boys and Girls U18 1st teams from Framlingham College. The idea of the visit was to give our children a look at what level of skill they could achieve in the years to come. They arrived in time for lunch and the dinning room was buzzing with our children chatting away to these young adults. The boys and girls were then treated to a masterclass by these very talented players who ran the sessions and obviously enjoyed the experience. I hope that the children felt inspired by the skills and attitude of these young sportsmen/women and appreciate the hard work it takes to get to the level that they are playing at. (some are now representing their country). My thanks go to Mr Gandy (Director of Sport) and to all the boys and girls from the College who gave up their time to come and visit us.

Boys hockey From the Sports Desk. Boys Hockey 1st VII v Culford School Won 3-0 After the warm up game against Framlingham Prep, which the boys were half asleep in, they came out fighting to ensure that that they didn't make the same mistakes. They worked hard to create the chances and despite some physical and skillful defence from Culford we scored all three goals in quick succession. A good performance but the boys must be mindful that the season is not over; we still have two tournaments to play, both of which we are going to have to be at the top of our game to do well in. 2nds VII v Culford School Won 8-0 The 2nd VII continued their unbeaten run, playing some sublime hockey, despite the boys being moved around their normal positions. It was a difficult game to manage as we were so dominant but the boys kept their shape and finished well. Well done to the entire squad. We look forward to next weeks 2nd VII tournament. 3 rd VII v Culford Won 6-2 Overall this was a great performance from the team with perhaps their best performance of the season so far once they started playing properly in the second half. In particular, a predatory streak in front of goal was on show and any shot on goal that was blocked by the Culford keeper was immediately met with a couple of OBH attackers eagerly sniffing the pads for a chance to score. As we approach the end of the season it is great to observe the boys playing total hockey by switching play from left to right via a sweeper and having the confidence to look up and assess which option to take. Target for the next game: Do not spend the first half getting into the game hit the opposition right from the start. 4 th VII v Culford Won 2-0 A hard-fought and tactical battle which OBH won thanks to forwards taking the chances that they had on offer and resolute keeping from Hamish Sugden. As seems to be the norm, the team took a few minutes to get into their stride but then the passing was slick, free hits were taken more quickly and OBH began to control the match. The team has progressed well and now understand when to pass and when to drive with the ball. Special mention must go to Tom Harper-Smith s wonder goal what a superb reverse stick strike! U11A v Culford Lost 1-5 The boys played with spirit and attacked with strength on many occasions. Having gone 1-0 down early on we then decided to work hard and use the width. This provided us with good passes into the D and hence more scoring opportunities. The tackling had improved and when we marked tightly they had fewer opportunities to shoot. George Briggs made some excellent saves as well. More shooting practice and awareness would have produced more goals and the boys must continue to work hard before their final game. U11 B v Culford Lost 0-1 The B s began well and were able to defend strongly and clear their lines effectively at the beginning of the game. Anthony Haworth-McKenna had made some wonderful saves before sliding to stop another shot. After swapping goalkeepers due to Anthony s injury we continued to work hard on the pitch before allowing the opposition to score the only goal. It was a good performance from the boys and with further work in the next couple of weeks they will get back to winning ways.

U11 Triangular Girls Sport U13 IAPS tournament After an eventful Under 11 tournament we were determined to get through the day! The weather was kinder and the rain held off which is always a bonus! The girls started really well in their first match against Bishop Stortford coming from 3-1 down to a well deserved 4-4 draw. We moved on to the 2 nd game of the day against our neighbours Framlingham. Although the girls had lost to them previously in the term, we knew we could beat them in tournament play. Framlingham started strong taking the lead but OBH kept their heads and dug deep and the game belonged to either team, the second half proved heartbreaking as OBH had the majority of the possession but were unable to convert. However, the final passage of play and a Framlingham goal on the final whistle gave them the win by just 1 goal!! The remaining games proved difficult, tiredness set in and tournament play is always difficult with the stop start running but the girls should be very proud of themselves. U13A v Culford The girls ventured to Culford on Wednesday for their penultimate fixture of the term. The afternoon started well as the sun was finally shining!! The girls have played in dreadful conditions this term which really can affect matches, so today, there were no excuses. As their coach, I have to say this was the best match the girls have played as a team and as individuals. Each player put into practice what they have been working on in games sessions and they all took responsibility on court. A fantastic game girls. Let s grab a win against Barnardiston next week, but before then...the match of the season v The Parents!!!!! U11A On Wednesday the U11s played a triangular against Culford School & Ipswich High School. Fortunately the rain stayed away for the duration. The A team, despite being down two players, put out a sterling effort. They played two very competitive matches and were unfortunate to lose 8-9 to Culford & 9-11 to IHS. A brilliant effort showing good strength & depth amongst the squad. Well played girls. U11B The U11B girls played a good home game on Wednesday playing Culford School and Ipswich School. In both games the girls seemed to have a slow start throughout the first half, although they picked up in the second half. They need to work on passes and also defence but well done girls with recovering in the second half; you improved significantly in defence. Advance notice for tennis and sports camps! Mr Bolt and his team will be running tennis and sports camps at the school, on Tuesday 28th & Wednesday, 29th March. The days run from 9.30 am-3.00 pm, cost 25 and consist of lots of fun sporting activities. They are always enjoyed by all Tennis Camps Easter Holidays who attend, and are very popular. Please josh.bolt@obh.co.uk if you would like your child to attend or for further info. (Please note that camps are for children in years 3-8).

And finally There is great excitement in the air as the Year 7 & 8 children finish their exams and thoughts turn toward what to wear for the Masquerade Ball on Saturday night. With around 50 extra boarders joining us, it promises to be a memorable occasion. Alongside the fine dining, magic shows, chocolate fountains and (forgettable!) music, will be a growing confidence in those younger children that boarding is an enjoyable and rewarding experience and one they can look forward to regardless of when that might be. The nature of boarding has changed greatly over recent years and for the better. Nobody has to board at OBH but those who do choose to do so because its mix of warmth, fun, nurture and camaraderie make it excellent preparation for the years ahead. Both Framlingham College and The Leys School have been kind enough to offer coaching sessions to our children this week, in hockey and netball. Their coaches offered a great deal for our Year 6 and 7 children to learn from but the most rewarding aspect was watching how our children responded to (1st team players at their senior schools) the sessions run by the older children themselves. They brought a completely different dynamic for our children and they not only learnt a huge amount but were completely inspired! A massive thank you to both schools. Finally, as I wade through large qualities of exam paper marking, my thoughts turn rather enviously to our IAPS ski team who will be jetting off to Passo Tonale on Sunday to defend a number of titles we won there last year. We have some extremely talented skiers and I wish them all the very best of luck. Have a great weekend. Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
