News from the Stable Yard Toys Another week has whizzed by. The children are collecting a fantastic number of Pluses and Credits and they have been thrilled to pick up their Blueys from Mr O Sullivan. Year 3 Parent meetings have taken place this week and Mrs. Warren has been able to give some very positive feedback on the children s hard work and brilliant effort. We have congratulated the following children in our Middle School assembly for their excellent maths and story writing skills: Trixie Morgan, Florence Morgan, Amelia Drake, Angelina Ruck, Matteo Barberini and Rory Hargreave. Keep up the excellent work! A reminder that all children should have a pair of wellies in school at all times. We have noticed many toys are being brought into school. While we are happy for the boarders to bring in cuddly toys for their dormitory, we would ask that day children leave their toys at home to avoid special things getting lost or broken. We appreciate your support with this matter. This week, Year 3 have entered their very own Stone Age world. The children have written imaginative stories about their exciting and often terrifying adventures. They have met woolly mammoths, ugly hairy Stone Age people and have had fierce battles with spiky spears. As soon as our stories are complete, they will be on display in our classroom. Do come and have a read. Time has been our focus in maths and the children were amazed to see what they could actually do in just one minute. Our classroom transformed into the Britten Hall while we timed how many star jumps and how many times we could touch our toes from a standing position. The Bunsen Burners were in action again in our science lesson and the children have written up their very first scientific experiment. Year 4 Parent Meetings Year 4 Parent meetings are in the calendar for next week, please remember to sign up for a slot with Mr Pascalides or Mr Gillott. Maths is a subject that we are always keen to promote in Year 4 and this week has been no different. As we have been looking at the properties of 2D shapes, we have had plenty of opportunities to sharpen our drawing pencils, line up our rulers and get hands-on with some practical equipment. So, if you want to know the difference between an isosceles and a scalene, a rhombus from a trapezium you know who to ask We wish you all a pleasant weekend. Mrs Warren, Mr Pascalides and Mr Gillott

News from the Music Department Informal Concert Oakham Singing Day Eleven of our Year 6 and 7 singers visited Oakham School last Tuesday to take part in a Prep Schools Music Day, entitled Viva La Fiesta! Our musicians joined over 100 other singers from 10 schools, as well as a large wind, brass and percussion group and musicians from Oakham School, in a concert with a Latin feel. Samba, Merengue, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, and several I have not heard of, were explored during the day s rehearsals and the closing concert, which amazed everyone with how good it sounded in such a short time. The pupils had a great time learning and singing the music in the concert, and the result was very impressive. We all arrived back late at OBH after a very long, tiring and fulfilling day. Thanks to all at Oakham School, especially the Director of Music, Peter Davies, who ran the show with unflagging energy and enthusiasm. Friday 29 th September saw the first in our series of Informal Concerts, which give OBH musicians of all levels the chance to perform in front of an audience without the pressure of a more formal event. Despite two sprained wrists and other last-minute minidramas, nine musicians gave lovely performances on flute, drums, piano and voice. We had all levels from first-time performer to Grade 4, and the audience enjoyed the recital very much, which started the home weekend with music. All the performers did themselves proud. Well done!

Senior Boarding Spero What a busy and fun-filled week the boys and girls have had whilst looking forward to a wonderful weekend with the staff and children of the Oscar Foundation this coming Saturday and Sunday. Top Trumps has been the game of the week with much hilarity. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Cricketers and Planes. take your pick.! The evenings have been taken up by the large array of activities as well as some extra treats along the way. The tuck shop was well attended, and the boys had a social gathering on Thursday evening upstairs whilst enjoying hot chocolate and goodies. It was good to see the boys chatting between the different age groups and playing games on laundry square and in their dorms as well. There is a keen battle to win the dorm competition in the three houses before half term and prizes are awarded on the Thursday evening or Friday morning break time to those that are working hard to keep their belongings tidy and in the right place. Individual prizes will be awarded towards the end of term, so keep working hard individually and as a team in your dormitory to gain more rewards. Birthdays Rehearsals, catch-up sessions and music practice occur as per normal and the boys and girls continue to stroke the tennis balls across the net in a professional manner, enjoying their sessions throughout the week. Here s to a wonderful weekend with the rugby and hockey festivals on Saturday, along with the Bollywood dancing and then the Football Tour match on Sunday. If you wish to book a birthday party for your son/daughter please either tracey.thornton@obh.co.uk or rob.miller@obh.co.uk

Cordage using nettles and other natural material - ( if there is time!) Year 8 with MBE s Earlier this week, as part of the Bushcraft Leaders Award, the Year 8s welcomed the Year 1 & 2 children to the Outdoor Classroom. There was great excitement when the Woodpeckers and Acorns arrived. The Year 8 children were tasked to teach a lesson on shelter building which included an A frame and lean-to shelters. All the children worked incredibly well together with some great results. It was lovely to see the Year 8s leading the session utilising the knowledge they have accrued over the past few years. We will cover as many of these modules as possible, but further courses throughout the year will ensure the children get a chance to experience all of them. The course will run from 9.30am -5pm, please me on nick.drake@obh.co.uk to book your place. Final Call OBH Ski Trip As you know, we are hoping to run our biennial ski trip, which will be at Axamer Lizum, Austria, from Saturday 24 th March to Saturday 31 st March This is open for all children in Year 3 to 8 of all abilities and is a lovely opportunity for them to not only improve their skiing but share this exciting experience with their peers. 8 Pre-Prep & Nursery A Peek at our Week This week, Hedgehog class (Nursery) have been learning the Nursery rhymes 'Mary had a little lamb' &' Hickory dickory dock' and remembering them brilliantly! They have also had great fun having a go at cutting out shapes with scissors to make mice to run up and down the grandfather clock on the wall in the Nursery. Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Manu Gosling Year 1 Gus Burstow Reception Giles Roberts Nursery Ralph Hall Reception Grasshoppers have enjoyed exploring the Elves and the Shoemaker this week. The children have also enjoyed making their own healthy hedgehog after reading the story of the Prickly Hedgehog. The Year 1 Acorns have been practising their harvest piece and enjoyed bringing their favourite cuddly toy in for Literacy. We have been reading the story 'Knuffle Bunny'. The Woodpeckers in Year 2 have loved using Ryan s huge conker collection for their addition and subtraction sums - what a great maths resource! Macmillan coffee afternoon Last Friday was our Macmillan Coffee afternoon. The weather was a little touch and go, but we managed the whole hour without a drop of rain and then got rather wet clearing up! The Year 2 children Woodpecker Class did an excellent job of running the event. They planned the games, made the signs, chose where their table was going to be and then ran the stall for a whole hour. They even decided between them when they could have time off to wander around. A very impressive set of organisational and social skills on show Mrs. Drake and I were incredibly proud of them. I am, however, a little worried about how many cake sprinkles were being cleared off the table each time they were accidentally spilt! We raised an incredible 192, over 60 more than last year! Many thanks to you all for your generous contributions. The winner of the Guess the number of smarties in the cake was Thomas Gillman. Felix Pearson guessed the teddy s name was Florence. Well done, to both of you. Have a lovely weekend. Camilla Webster Pre-Prep Drop In Morning Next Friday, 13th October we will be holding a Drop-In Morning for prospective parents to see what we do in Pre-Prep. Please do encourage any friends to come along who may be interested in OBH for their children. Birthday Congratulations It was Manu s birthday on Tuesday this week we hope you had a lovely day!

obh mail MBE s with Year 8 Harvest Festival Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Harvest festival this afternoon. It is always such a lovely occasion. We shall get some photos in next week s newsletter. We were all amazed by the donations for the food bank. Mr. and Mrs. Gillott s cars were full to the brim after the service they will be delivering all your kind donations to the West Road and Westley Community Food Bank in Bury this weekend. MBE Surprise! On Monday afternoon, the Acorns and Woodpeckers eagerly pulled on their wellies and scampered over to the outdoor classroom. To their delight the children were greeted by Year 8 and Mr. Drake. The senior children led the session by teaching the children how to make an A' frame and 'lean to shelters. They all collaboratively worked well together and in true OBH style it was a delight to see. ~ Mrs. Drake

From the Sports Desk..Boys U9 Boys hockey U13A Boys Rugby v Framlingham Prep Lost The boys were up for the challenge against a large set of opposition boys. Having held the opposition in the scrums enough to win the majority of our scrums we were able to apply good attacking moves especially in the second half. The boys were told to enjoy the challenge, tackle hard and press up on the opposition when they had the ball to stop their bigger stronger boys from gaining momentum and scoring more tries. A try for us came at the end of the first half with some quick thinking to go blind which saw Jasper step in off his wing and set up a ruck on the 22 with Caspar changing direction and going in at the corner for a well manufactured try. Various ideas were tried and tested and the boys should be proud of their efforts going over for two more tries, one of which was scored by the jet propelled Hamish Sugden who outstripped three defenders for what may be hard to beat as the try of the season. U9 Boys Hockey v Fairstead House OBH 4 Fairstead House 0 On Tuesday all of the U9 boys played in a hockey match against Fairstead House. OBH worked hard throughout the game to keep possession. As the game progressed the boys started to link up well with their passing to score a number of well worked goals. It was a good win for the OBH boys and the team should be proud with how hard they tried. U9 Football Although the game was lost, all must be proud of their huge efforts and must continue to work as a unit, supporting each other in all that you do! U12A Boys Vs Framlingham Prep School OBH 15 Framlingham Prep School 10 On Wednesday OBH played against Framlingham Prep School. This was a well matched fixture and turned out to be a great game of rugby. Framlingham started off strong keeping possession well and moving the ball quickly out to the wings. OBH soon got into the game and started to move the ball at speed and then find the gaps to attack the opposition line. At half time OBH were ahead however, a few missed tackles opened up a gap for Framlingham to score and the game was back to 2-2. It came down to the final moments of the game for OBH to win the match with a great team effort to push the opposition over their own try line and place the ball down to score. Boys U8 Football Vs Moreton Hall OBH 0 Moreton Hall 3 On Friday the U8 boys played against Moreton Hall. Moreton Hall were strong on the ball and showed their attacking threat with a couple of good goals before the half time whistle was blown. After the break, OBH focused on their positions and keeping possession however, another goal by Moreton Hall finished the game off and ended the match as 3-0 to the opposition.

Girls Sport U13A IAPS Hockey Tournament Last Friday was a tough day for the U13A team at the IAPS tournament as they were up against some incredibly strong and experience side from all over the country, including Scotland. They worked hard all day and made some good progress and were keen to play their additional matches. This showed great resilience and strength of character. U13A v Framlingham Prep Won 5-3 On Wednesday with a new formation and a positive outlook the U13As went out against Fram. We dominated in the first half with good defensive play and plenty of attacking opportunities which were capitalised on, enabling us to go into half time 3-0 up. After the break Fram came back at us hard trying to dictate play and switch the ball through the middle. We defended well, but they continued to pile on the pressure and after 15mins had managed to bring the score back to a draw. The team dug team and were not going to let the game get away from them. With a lovely ball through to Adriana she slipped it passed the goalie to make the score 4-3. Just minutes later, with great determination Scarlett had another strike on goal and scored, hitting the back board with a bang. It was a cracking game with end to end play and a well deserved win for the team. Well done. U13 v Framlingham Prep Won 1-0 This was a hard fought game with both sets of girls working hard to retain possession, and create scoring chances. In the first half the OBH girls were a little disjointed, but they soon found their flow and created some goal scoring opportunities, which they did not manage to convert. Framingham Prep defended brilliantly, but early on in the second half we managed to find the back of the net with some pinpoint passing and clinical finishing from our centre forward. It was a tense game, with both sides creating chances, but at the final whistle it was OBH that just managed to hang on. Both sides deserve huge credit for an excellent game of hockey, and my thanks go to Framingham Prep for hosting an exciting game. U11A Triangular v Morton Hall & Ipswich High Continuing with confidence following IAPS earlier in the week, the team took the pitch in a 15 minute match against Moreton Hall. The girls worked hard but had forgotten to use the width of the pitch which hindered the attacking opportunities. However, this did improve as the game progressed. There was excellent defending by all of the players which ensured Moreton had just one scoring opportunity and OBH had to settle for a goal-less draw. U9 Netball v Fairstead As always, the girls were very excited about the match! Both teams started strongly but OBH took the lead 2-0. However, Fairstead had a burst of energy and goals which took them into quarter 3 leading by 7 goals. OBH made further changes and fought back with vengeance winning the second half of the match but it was just a little too late. Although a little bit of a disappointing result for the girls, it gave lots of the girls match experience, playing at a higher level than they had before, so lots learnt and they all had fun!

U11 Girls IAPS Highest placed school from Suffolk! The girls travelled excitingly to Orwell Park for the area IAPS qualifier on Monday, for some it was their first experience of such a big tournament. OBH faced local rivals Orwell Park first and were unlucky not to take the win as they had the majority of the possession but we accepted the draw and moved on to the next two matches against Culford and Wellingborough. The girls played with more confidence and attack and were rewarded with a 1-0 win. The girls went into the Wellingborough match knowing it was going to be hard and close. They played amazingly well and took the win 2-1! The confidence was high and the girls started to sense how well they were doing in the group stage but had also seen their next opponents results..norwich School who were unbeaten and were winning by a significant margin, but this didn t deter the girls. They again played with courage and were unlucky to lose by just one goal, but this meant they finished a fabulous second in their group and were through to the quarter finals where they faced Kingshott School. It was obvious to see that the OBH girls were the better team but they struggled to convert the goals, which meant Golden Goal time! Not fazed by the situation, they dug deep and much to the supporters delight finally managed to score and were in the Semi Finals!!!! Wow what an awesome result and it proved to the girls what we already knew that they had the potential to do well. So, off the girls went, straight into the semi against the winners of the other group, Witham Hall. With a very quick moment to have a drink and regroup, the girls took to the pitch. Going end to end without either team being able to score a goal at the end of the Golden Goal five minutes we moved onto PENALTY SHUFFLES! Unfortunately, the girls were unable to secure a place in the final and Witham Hall went on to win the entire tournament, but the girls did immensely well. They literally dragged themselves off the pitch as they had given absolutely everything, they took the knocks, the bruises and cuts and carried on. This was definitely a day that everyone at OBH could be very proud of, the entire squad were quite inspirational!!! Thank you to Mrs Thurlow who travelled with the squad, Mrs Jewers and Mrs Myers for their amazing support throughout, but most of all to the eight girls in the squad who made me a VERY proud coach. Mrs Phillips Framlingham College U18 It was an absolute pleasure to welcome back the U18 Boys and Girls hockey and rugby sides from Framingham College, including Alex Gordie Gordon who left OBH in It was a busy afternoon of coaching by the Framlingham team; they ran sessions with a mixture of boys and girls from all year groups and it pleasing to see the playing fields buzzing with excitement as the children literally looked up at all these young adults delivering excellent sessions. It was a very inspiring afternoon, and my thanks go to Nick Gandy, Director of Sport and Jamie Kingstone, Head of Hockey, for bringing them over for the afternoon. Tennis Camps Half term Mr Bolt and his team will be running the usual sports camps in half term. They will run on Tuesday 24th October and Wednesday 25th October, from 9:30-3pm. The cost per day is 25 and is open to all children in years 3-8. These usually prove very popular and include lots of different activities such as tennis, football, dodgeball and numerous indoor games such as matt-sliding etc! Any questions, please contact Mr Bolt directly: josh.bolt@obh.co.uk Many thanks.

And finally As I write this, final preparations are being made for what promises to be a fantastic weekend. We have had significant interest in Saturday s Open Morning and the children are already excitedly looking forward to showing off their school. As the final prospective parents are leaving, the OBH 7 s tournaments will be kicking off, with well over 200 children from around East Anglia involved in rugby and hockey of the highest level. Moreover, just as the final mini-buses are heading off through Brettenham, the OSCAR Foundation tourists will arrive! This has been a long time in the planning (and fundraising) and we cannot wait to meet our new friends from Mumbai. I am sure next week s OBH mail will be full of stories and photos of the activities we will be sharing over the coming days. There has been a lot of interest in the school ski trip next year. If you would still like your child to be involved but have not let us know, please contact Hannah by next Monday at the latest. As many of you will know, an important part of the ISI inspection is feedback from parents and pupils. Although an inspection is not imminent, it is sensible for us as a school, to be as prepared as we can be. A significant part of that preparation is ensuring that we listen to, and understand the views of the wider OBH community. We do this all the time of course in hundreds of informal discussions and chats that go on every day, but there is also clearly value in a more formal approach. A boarders questionnaire was carried out at the end of last term and provided a great deal of useful and informative information. The whole of the pupil body will be canvassed next term, and the results from this, along with the useful feedback that is gleaned from our regular School Council meetings, will enable us to be much more responsive to pupil feedback and suggestions. However, for this term, I would be very grateful if parents could provide us with some feedback. We want to ensure that we are doing everything we can to meet your needs and expectations, as well as that of your children. The design of any questionnaire can be challenging so we have based ours on the current ISI questionnaire for parents model. This will hopefully cover all relevant areas and provide a consistency of approach for when our inspection takes place! Please click to open the following link to access the survey, which can be completed on line: We have just heard that Anglia TV will be here on Sunday to cover our football match with the OSCAR Foundation very exciting news! Be sure to watch the regional news over the next few days and look out for us! Many thanks and do come and enjoy our spectacular weekend. Tom O Sullivan
