What has been happening in Stable Yard Under Niners Our Middle School rehearsals are coming on apace. Many thanks to everyone who has already bought in props and costumes. A reminder that pirate boys will need to bring in their own short sleeved stripy t-shirt (any colour) and any mermaid accessories including bracelets, necklaces and hair bands will add colour and glitter to the mermaid costumes. Well done, to all the children who have clearly learnt their lines over half term. For those children who are still unsure, it would be greatly appreciated if parents could reassure and help their children with the trickier lines and cues. The children will be rehearsing during Thursday afternoon activities for the remaining weeks of term, as this will cause the least disruption to academic lessons. Within our topic of Ancient Greece, the Year 3 children have enjoyed listening to the story of the Trojan Horse. Mr Pascalides and I have been very impressed with the way in which the children have engaged in this creative task and their stories are imaginative and descriptive. They had great fun working together in groups to create interesting freeze frames. They got the idea brilliantly and their facial expressions speak for themselves! In maths, we have been teaching the tricky concept of time. With a great deal of hard work, Year 3 children are now more confident when telling the time both in digital and analogue form. We have turned our attention to forces in science and have looked for examples of pushes and pulls in our everyday lives. As you know, Year 3 and 4 will be swimming every Friday afternoon between now and the end of term. The children will need their swimming things in school every day in case we can take advantage of any warmer weather. It is going to be a very busy and productive lead up to the end of term. We will ensure that the children are well prepared for all activities both in and out of the classroom. They have made a fantastic start. Mrs. Warren, Mr. Pascalides,

Year 4 Year 3 Freeze Frames Year 4 have been out investigating the trees at OBH. With their identification kits in hand, the children have been sorting out their sycamores from their chestnuts and learning to recognise common trees by examining their leaves, bark and fruit.

Scholars This week saw the scholars (who have all been given Common Entrance exemption) enjoying some cultural and historical activities in the company of Mr and Mrs Campbell. Tuesday saw everyone heading off to Bletchley Park to learn about the vital work of the codebreakers of Enigma and the invention of the Bombe - the famous decoding machine portrayed in the film The Imitation Game. Although the day was wet and windy, the information gleaned was fascinating, especially the insight given into the work of Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman - to wander through Hut 8 where Turing worked was very special indeed. We also found details in the archive of a relation of Lottie Rowlands who worked in Hut 3, which was a nerve tingling moment. On Thursday, the group set off for Cambridge to enjoy the pleasures of punting on the Cam. We were given a delightful commentary by our punter, undergraduate Henry, on all of the Cambridge colleges that border the Cam (which included some scandalous and some highly entertaining stories) concerning the history of the colleges particularly the wellknown rivalry between Trinity and St John s and the placing of certain objects on top of the spire of King s College Chapel! During the week, the scholars have also been honing their work on a project concerning the carbon footprint of the school. The scholars will present these findings to the Governors on Monday morning. The hard work that took place earlier in the year has certainly paid off - so that each scholar can now enjoy working collaboratively and independently on specific projects which have been set to extend and challenge them academically and intellectually. Julia Campbell

Boarding at OBH Birthday boys It has been a busy week back at OBH since the half term break. The Year 8 s have been preparing hard for CE and enjoyed a pre-common Entrance BBQ hosted by Mr O Sullivan. The weather was not too kind but everyone had a great time, even if they did get a bit damp! The swimming pool has been open this week in the evenings and the children have been enjoying an evening swim and the usual queue for the tuck shop was in evidence on Wednesday night. We are looking forward to a packed weekend of Krashball and Parents tennis and golf followed by a trip to Thorpeness for boating on the Meare and a Beach BBQ. We celebrated several birthdays this week including Javier Domingo and Rupert Guinness. Javier had his birthday tea on Monday whilst Rupert enjoyed his on Tuesday night. The boys invited all the Year 7 boys to their parties and enjoyed their cakes and had lots of fun as you can see. A plea! If your child boards at the weekend, please can you jen.miller@obh.co.uk if they are to be at a family event or sporting event. It really helps with our planning especially if we are going off-site! Many thanks.

Pre-Prep & Nursery A peek at our week Our first week back after half term has been a flurry of rehearsals, sports day races and Father s day cards, as well as our normal lessons. Rehearsals are well under way for our summer show Rumble in the Jungle. Mrs. Allison, our esteemed director, is working incredibly hard to co-ordinate poetry, movement, tap dancing, singing and costumes. The children are having a brilliant time and really looking forward to performing in just over a week. Concert with a coffee Monday 12th June On Monday, we have the Pre-Prep informal concert newly entitled Concert with a coffee. This concert is for children who have an individual music lesson, either in or out of school, to have the opportunity to perform a short piece to their friends and family. Our music teachers in school will sign your child up if your child has a lesson outside school and would like to play, please do let me know as it would be lovely to hear what they have been working on: camilla.webster@obh.co.uk The concert is in the Old Gym at 2.45 pm (not 1.30 pm, as stated in the Key Dates information huge apologies). It is informal, so there will be no programme. Tea and coffee will be available for you whilst you are enjoying the performances. U9A Boys Cricket U9A Boys cricket tournament at Orwell Park The boys enjoyed a busy afternoon of cricket at Orwell Park. The first match against Barnardiston was a tight game with the boys only winning by 2 runs. This was followed by a tough match against Orwell Park. The hosts worked hard in the field and bowled accurately which made it very hard for the OBH boys to get many runs. Once in the field, inconsistent bowling and a number of fielding errors by the OBH boys allowed Orwell Park to go on and win the game. The next game against St. Felix gave the boys a boost in confidence as they easily defeated the opposition by 56 runs. It was New Hall next and it was all looking like a comfortable win for OBH until the final over. A number of fielding errors in the last few balls allowed the opposition to win the game by 1 run. This was a really tough lesson for the boys to learn and something that they needed to take into the next game against Framlingham Prep. The bowling and fielding was much better in the last game however, the boys couldn t quite reach the total in which Framlingham Prep scored. By the end of the tournament OBH finished joint third. Plenty still to work on but great to see the boys get an opportunity to play lots of cricket. 11 obh mail House Swimming Gala At last we had some sunshine and for the majority of the week the children made the most of it; practising their events for the House Swimming competition. It was hugely pleasing to see all the children swimming their hearts out for their Houses, there was a really competitive but fun filled atmosphere around the pool throughout afternoon. Although it was a House event, the individual events proved to be hotly contested, with four new school records and some very close finishes. Well done to who finished first with Mars hot on their heels. We look forward to the next major House event, House Athletics (Sports Day) with all the children representing their Houses to claim the much coveted trophy. 12 Boys Cricket Colts 1 st XI v South Lee The 1 st XI continued our winning run against South Lee with a convincing display. Batting first, George Whitelaw (50*) and Ed Collins (34) set the tone, putting on a fifty partnership with a mixture of quick singles and bludgeoning boundaries. Freddie Garfoot and Archie Rook both contributed later on as we scored 167 for 5 from 20 overs. In their reply, Sam Harrison opened the bowling and took 4 for 10 from his four overs, bowling with consistent accuracy. He was ably supported by George Strutt, who took three scalps, including two consecutive wicket maidens. We also took five catches in the field and conceded only 8 extras as South Lee finished on 67 for 7. Well played to the whole team. 4 th XI v Framlingham Prep Won by 88 runs The boys relished the thought of another match against Framlingham Prep. Having had a really close game against them earlier in the season, we were keen to try and win both games. OBH batted first, and right from the start they dominated the bowling, some huge hits from Rupert Guinness, who ended up scoring his first 50 at OBH with 66 not out, and well supported by Hamish Sugden and Tomas Villar. We hit 148 of our 20 overs which put us in the driving seat. After the break the OBH boys started well with early wickets, Framlingham Prep were always behind the run rate, and after 16 overs they were all out for 60. A fine team performance by the boys with everyone contributing to the win. Colts A v South Lee Result Won: 132 for 3 (20 overs) (OBH) : 116 for 6 (20 Overs) (South Lee) We were put in to bat on a warm afternoon and our openers ran well between the wickets scoring at roughly five runs per over. With a good first wicket stand the rest of our batsmen were able to bat calmly and build on this good start. Boundaries came steadily throughout the innings and we were able to reach a total of 134 due to a fine half century from Freddie de la Rue and some powerful hitting later on. We bowled more accurately and were able to take wickets at important times during the run chase after the opposition had started well. Some good catches and enthusiastic fielding meant that we won the game by 16 runs. Well done, to the boys. Colts B v South Lee Result: Won by 61 runs This was a pleasing victory. A 14 a-side fixture played in a pairs format. Everybody got the chance to bowl and the boys can be proud of their efforts. They gave away few wides or no balls, which makes a big difference in this type of game. Backed up by some alert fielding, the pressure mounted and wickets fell. South Lee stuck at their task but OBH restricted them to a total of 123 at the end of their allotted overs. In response, OBH batted with confidence, although a few unnecessary wickets were gifted to the visiting side. That being said, the boys hit some impressive boundaries and the total kept building as they showed the ability to find quick runs with some pleasing calling skills. Eventually OBH posted a score of 184 and sealed a convincing victory.

Girls Cricket U9 Girls Cricket U13A Girls v South Lee WOW!!! What a performance! The girls have played well all of term but over recent weeks, they have pulled together as a team and outshined their opposition, but not as much as yesterday. With South Lee limited to just 24 runs whilst OBH scored 120, it was an absolutely amazing win. Great work by the girls, let us take the confidence and work rate into our hard ball match against The Perse! U13B Girls v South Lee It was a lovely afternoon at South Lee. The opposition won the toss and elected to field first. Primrose Ackroyd-Cooper was captain and organised OBH s batting pairs. Elle Jeffery and Sienna Wheeler went out to face some solid bowling first and scored 13 from a few fours and sneaky singles. Millie Clark and Clara Middleton took us to the next level and scored 41 runs quickly with some excellent batting before Primrose and Anlan Wang secured a further 43 in their pairing. Vivian Wang and Sienna scored 29 and then Maisy Webster and Issy Cutler scored 45 to end the innings with a total of 271. This was a very tough score for South Lee to chase, and our girls bowled consistently to keep South Lee s run rate low and although they had some good batting spells, we caught and bowled four excellent wickets which ended the match securely in OBH s favour with a win of Well done, girls! On Wednesday the U9 girls' cricket team travelled to Orwell Park to take part in their first ever cricket tournament. They started fantastically well, beating both Felsted and Orwell Park convincingly. After an injury and therefore a change to the batting order the team had a small wobble against The Abbey, ending up losing by only a few runs. We re-grouped and went out against a strong New Hall side that were very good at attacking the ball and coming down the wicket to go after as many runs as possible. Despite a strong performance we lost by just 2 runs. Going into our last match against Framlingham we were in contention for 2nd place, but after a long afternoon of concentrating hard and playing in particularly windy conditions we were unable to contain some of their stronger batters; resulting in a run defeat. Overall, the girls played incredibly well, learnt a great deal from their first tournament experience and should be proud of their performance.

And finally There was a palpable sense of relief and genuine excitement in the air this morning at OBH as soon as the final Latin exam had ended and Common Entrance for this year was complete. The children in Year 8 have been wonderful this week - they have kept calm level heads and concentrated fully on their exams and as a result have been able to sustain the necessary focus that these exams demand. No one has been upset or distressed about any part of the process. The children can be confident that they have all tried their hardest and endeavoured to show what has been learned over the past three years. All of Year 8 will now be able to enjoy some well-deserved rest and recreation and be able to make the most of the short time they have left together as a year group. Some of the children have been together for many years - others less so. Nevertheless, all will shortly be going on their own separate journeys as they head off to their respective senior public schools in September. The remainder of the prep school has been working steadily this week revising for their forthcoming exams, which commence on Tuesday 20 th June. For some of our younger pupils it will be the first time that they have encountered such challenges, for others it will be a question of honing the exam skills, which are so vital if pupils are to achieve academic success in the future. Everyone can be reassured that they are in a very supportive environment where taking exams becomes commonplace and something that pupils learn to deal with in a very confident way by the time they reach the top of OBH. I wish everyone a good weekend. Julia Campbell Deputy Head
