A Busy Week in Stable Yard We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful half term with your children. The children have all had a brilliant time whether skiing, shopping or simply spending time at home with family and friends. As you know, World Book Day is on Thursday 1 st March. There is much excited conversation amongst the children and we look forward to seeing all of them dressed up magnificently as their favourite book character. Please do not go out and buy anything special as prizes will be awarded for creativity and effort. Year 3 and 4 have been busy choosing their extract for World Book Day assembly. Mrs. Warren has heard several already and has been impressed with the confident and enthusiastic performances. Some children have even managed to learn their words by heart! On Monday, Mr Gillott, Mr Pascalides and Mrs. Warren will be listening to all of the chosen pieces and will chose the more confident performers from each class to read their extracts aloud to Mrs Rice, Dr Marshall and the Year 5 children when they visit the Stable Yard on Wednesday morning. Six children will then be given the chance to read aloud in their World Book Day assembly on Thursday. Good luck to everyone! Year 3 have met Mr Bony this week. Within the science topic of Ourselves, they are learning about the bone names and why our human skeleton is so important. Please come and meet their paper skeletons that are hanging in the classroom. Some of them have very unusual names! Together with celebrating birthdays for Innes Parratt and Imogen Thurlow, it has been a brilliant first week back after the half term break. Well done, to all the children for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott and Mr Pascalides

obh mail Year 4 Tractor Day Year 4 Tractor Day On Tuesday, Year 4 were delighted to welcome local farmer (and current parent), Rupert Brown, back to OBH as he brought in his 7-tonne, 240 horse-power Fendt tractor for Tractor Day. Although the highlight of the morning was definitely the chance to sit in the cab (checking out the fridge) and imagine what it would be like to be out in the open fields, the class thoroughly enjoyed hearing all about working in modern farming. It was amazing to learn just how different it was a century ago when farmers relied on horses and the children were all impressed with what today s tractors can actually do. Back in the classrooms the children continued to find out more on Farming and looking at where our food comes from, both home and abroad. Their next project will be to create some model farms ready for the Suffolk Show. Watch this space to hear how they get on

Making Egyptian Crowns 3EW have been learning about different types of crowns pharaohs wore in ancient Egypt. The king of Egypt wore a double crown, created from the Red Crown of Lower Egypt and the White Crown of Upper Egypt. They then made red and white Egyptian Crowns which when joined together make a red and white crown. Egyptologists have found the crowns in portraits but have never found a crown! Crowns were thought to have magical properties, and it is thought that it would be passed to the next Pharaoh rather than be buried with them!

Music Making Uppingham Orchestral Day Thirteen pupils from Years 6 to 8 took part in the annual Uppingham Prep Schools Orchestral Day on Thursday. They joined with some 340 pupils from 21 prep schools to form one mammoth orchestra, so big there was hardly room in the hall for an audience for the closing concert. The children played either within the string ensemble or the wind/brass/percussion band, and then together for a medley of tunes from the Harry Potter movies. It was enormous fun and the standard of music-making was remarkably high considering the short rehearsal time. They all kept going really well throughout what was a very long day, and returned to OBH in the evening buzzing after a great day s music-making. Year 8 Petites annonces pour la Saint Valentin Year 8 have put their French descriptive skills to good use in these Valentine s ads. Plea from Maths Department We are working very hard in maths lessons this term and the children are full of enthusiasm for the topics being covered. There are still some children who do not have the right equipment so we would like to clarify what is the minimum expected for each year group. We can supply scissors and glue sticks but it is always helpful when children have their own to use. Year 5 & 6 Each child should have HB pencils, rubber, ruler (30cm preferred), pencil sharpener, protractor. Year 7 & 8 Each child should have all the equipment expected ofthe younger children together with a compass and a scientific calculator. We recommend the CASIO fx-83gt PLUS. We have a supply of these which can be dispensed as required at the cost 7.50 which will be added to the school bill or you may purchase your own. These calculators will be appropriate for maths lessons up to A Level so the investment will not be wasted! A final request. please could these items be named so that when they are mislaid, they can be returned to their rightful owners! Many thanks for your help. Mrs Chapple, Mrs Miller & Mr Miller

News from the Boarding Houses We have had plenty of birthday celebrations this week with wonderful food and celebrations on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We began with the Year 7 boys helping Edward Marsh to enjoy his evening with some glorious singing and cake galore. Caspar Hall enjoyed a pleasant evening with the gang and a wonderful cake which had been created with many different sports in mind. Plenty of fun and enjoyment was had by all before disappearing off to various activities. Finally Mauro Villar was excited about his party and with a happy crowd the enjoyment continued with burgers and cakes and all the necessary goodies provided so willingly by our wonderful kitchen staff. It has been lovely to see the boarders enjoying these evenings throughout the year and we look forward to more celebrations in the coming weeks. Events to come.. A letter about the Open Boarding Weekend (3 rd & 4 th March) will be with you shortly and we are looking forward to The Masquerade Ball and seeing all the boys and girls dressing up smartly for this occasion. Boarding queries Please feel free to Tracey (tracey.thornton@obh.co.uk) or Rob Miller (rob.miller@obh.co.uk) if you have any questions about the boarding weekend programme for this term which has been sent out or can be found on the website. Please also inform us, as per usual, of any changes to your son or daughter s boarding nights as the term progresses. Spero What fun we have all had in Spero this week. The House filled up with Thespians and after numerous rehearsals each dorm performed a play. Joan gave us The Haunted House performed in torchlight, with a particularly memorable ghost on the loo!! Lovell performed The Cooking Show which saw Mad Joe boiling up soft toys in a cauldron ably assisted by William, whilst an extremely professional Gus provided a voiceover that would have sounded perfect on Masterchef. The girls in Knyvett then showcased The Doctor. A tale of a young girl skipping down the street only to fall over a rock, get picked up by a friend and be examined by Dr Warren - who had clearly learnt her bedside manner, dabbing at blood and bandaging skills straight from me!! I just wish I had had the camera. They want costumes and musical instruments next week. Oh, how glorious it is to be houseparent of the Junior Boarders. Emma Easdale

Pre-Prep & Nursery Welcome After a lovely half term break, we welcomed Mya Salisbury and Ivor Wright into the Nursery class. Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: A Peek at our Week Hedgehogs have started their new topic this week New Beginnings.; looking at growth and decay. They have been reading the Hungry Caterpillar; using balloons the children painted caterpillars and have been finger painting to match numbers. Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Tabitha Banks Clara Webster Charlotte Warner Hugo Hayes This week, Grasshoppers have begun thinking about dinosaurs and they have enjoyed sharing their fascinating facts with each other. Mrs Gillott and Mrs Barrett have also enjoyed seeing the children write and record their dinosaur facts. It is such a treat to watch the children begin to apply all the skills they have been developing since the start of the school year. Acorns have been busy in literacy with work based around The Little Red Hen. They have made bread, created their own story maps and written detailed paragraphs about some of the characters. They had a soggy MBE s creating journey ropes with Year 2 but managed to find some interesting objects in the various outdoor classrooms around school. They are on display in the front hall, so do pop in a have a look. Woodpeckers have started learning about Kenya this week. The class thoroughly relished the idea of getting messy making mud huts out of actual mud and straw! Mrs Lapthorne and Mrs Drake were equipped with binoculars and went on a safari in the classroom - the children turned themselves into different African animals. Some were trickier to guess than others!

Our week in Pre-Prep & Nursery A lovely morning Many thanks to all the parents who joined us for our Science themed activity morning today. It is always so lovely seeing how well attended our activity mornings are the children just love having you in and sharing their lesson with you. Nursery spent the morning making gloop - looking at solids and liquid. They also did a floating and sinking experiment finishing with a bath bomb! The Reception children helped their parents investigate dinosaurs. They cracked dinosaur eggs, built a dinosaur skeleton and made a fossil. Year 1 had a brilliant time making zeotropes with their parents. The Year 2 children, and their parents, turned into D.N.A detectives and undertook a number of themed activities, including an origami D.N.A. helix and creating a D.N.A. strand for their chosen creature out of beads. Old Boney We have a new pupil in the Pre-Prep. One of our lovely Baby & Toddler mummies is a radiographer and has kindly donated her skeleton to the school. Her parents are delighted, as they now have half their attic back! He has taken up residence in the Pre-Prep front hall and has already been admired by many staff I think he will enjoy lots of outings around the school! He has always been known as Old Boney, and I would not want to confuse him by changing his name! However, as he already has the initials OB it seems a shame not to add an H on the end. The competition is open to the whole school please pop your entries in the box next to Old Boney in the Pre-Prep front hall. Singing in Spring Tuesday 27th February 2.30 pm We are looking forward to welcoming you all to the Pre-Prep Spring Sing this coming Tuesday, 2.30pm in The Old Gym. All the children in the Pre-Prep will be singing a group song and those children who have individual lessons will have the opportunity to perform a piece. A glass of something refreshing? Child A - 'What's that lesson called that we go to Mr Bunting for?' Teacher A - 'It's called ICT' Child B - 'Oh I LOVE icytea (ICT), that's my favourite drink!' Have a lovely weekend,

From the Director of Sport.. Weather Alert Please keep an eye on the school Clarion Call system for any changes in match status next week as we are expecting some wintery conditions. Please ensure that children have their skins in school as the weather is forecast to be bitterly cold. Girls Sport U13 s travel to Norfolk! Everybody was very excited to be having a night away in Norfolk and the highlight for the girls was staying in a windmill! The tour started with a fixture against Gresham s School. With two hard fought games against a talented group, the A s suffered a loss but the B s grabbed themselves a win. Supper was served in the school where there was huge excitement as OBH socialised with the teams from Gresham s. We headed back to the windmill and were very thankful to Mr Drake for doing a special delivery of yummy hot chocolate which was enjoyed at bedtime. The girls all had a good night s sleep and were up bright and breezy ready for the short journey up the road to the boy s accommodation where everyone was greeted by the amazing smell of bacon! Thank you to Mr Swiney, Mr Miller and Mr Barrett for a delicious breakfast which set the girls up for the matches against Taverham Hall. The games were hard fought and ended with one win and one loss, but most importantly they all had a fun couple of days. The girls and I would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Thurlow for coming with us and Mr Drake for organising a brilliant mini tour of Norfolk! U13 Girls U13A v Holmwood House OBH started the match incredibly well. They were playing with confidence and benefited from having a full warm up. Great shooting, transition from defence to attack followed by consistent shooting ensured that the girls ended the quarter in the lead by Changes were made each quarter and the girls reacted well but by then, Holmwood had warmed up and started to claw back. Half time and still ahead More changes, with players in new or less experienced positions, were going to show strength of character and they did just that. With changes in all areas of the court the girls remained in the lead OBH continued to work hard and play patient netball and were able to extend the lead slightly to finish in front by 10 goals. Great team effort! U13B v Riddlesworth & Holmwood House The girls played Riddlesworth first and enjoyed the fixture. The play was very open from the outset and our girls managed to net several goals in quick succession due to the lack of pressure from the opposition on the ball. At half time the girls were comfortably winning, so took it as an opportunity to try alternative positions in preparation for Holmwood. Win The Holmwood match was fiercely contested from the outset and the OBH defence was vulnerable to attack, and they went down 4-1 in the first part of the match. After some tactical changes and moving OBH stronger players to defence, the girls began to come back, and finally finished the match 6-6. Well done, girls. You persevered for a well deserved draw.

Girls & Boys Sport Fixture Cancellation Wednesday 28th February Girls U11 U11A v Holmwood House Senior Boys Hockey matches v RHS: cancelled by RHS Senior Hockey House matches will take their place, starting at 2.00 pm. Hockey Tour to Norfolk On the Thursday before half term the entire Year 7 and 8 boys and girls departed OBH for Norfolk to play Gresham s and Langley Prep. The teams arrived at Gresham's just as the rain stopped and after the warm ups the matches got under way. All five teams played some excellent hockey, with mixed results and some very tight games. Playing against a much bigger school was always going to be a challenge, but it was hugely pleasing to see the boys rise to the occasion. On Wednesday the U11As played against Holmwood House. They dominated throughout the match and kept the lead throughout. However, Holmwood worked hard to close them down and got to within two goals of OBH by half time. Despite losing our Centre to injury in the last quarter we finished the match victorious with a 9-6 win. Well done, girls! U11B v Riddlesworth & Holmwood House On Wednesday the U11B team played against Riddlesworth and Holmwood House School. After a hot match tea and some time to socialise, the teams made their way back to the accommodation for a much deserved night s sleep. The next morning the girls came to join us for a hot breakfast and some time to relax before departing for Taverham Hall, where unfortunately the weather deteriorated. They played in rain for the majority of the afternoon, but once again the boys played some excellent hockey. It was just before 3.00 pm when a very tired, but happy group of boys boarded the buses for the final journey back to OBH. It was a huge success taking two year groups, giving all the children a chance to experience touring before their senior schools, and although the results did not all go our way, it was pleasing to see the children socialise together and muck in. My thanks go to the staff, who gave up their time to help organise and manage the teams. Nick Drake Director of Sport Playing Riddlesworth first, the girls were ready and focused going into the first half. They were competitive and eager to get the ball with good strong play down the court. At half time they were losing but only by a margin, so knew it was going to be a fight. They took the challenge and gave it their all but unfortunately it was a loss. They then played Holmwood House and this was a good game as both teams were evenly matched. The girls played well in fighting form, however they did have another loss but with only 3 goals scored it was a close game. The girls were not, and should not be, disheartened; they played so well and cannot wait to see what they bring next week!

Boys Hockey Senior Hockey 1st VII v Holmwood House The 1st VII played some excellent hockey on Wednesday although due to recent injuries there was a slight re-arrangement to the team s structure, but it seemed to work as the boys were 1-0 up within eight minutes. From there on in they dominated, passing the ball well and using every player to keep possession. Some excellent well taken goals ensured that the boys won the game and it was pleasing to see that they kept the pressure up, right until the final whistle. An impressive performance by the entire squad. 2nd VII v Holmwood House It was a slightly slow and relaxed start to the 2nd VII game with the boys lacking some fight, but late on in the first half they seemed to ignite their competitive spirit and really started to spark! Holmwood had some talented young players but OBH s physicality and determination won through to see them score the first goal. A slight lapse in concentration allowed Holmwood back into the match, but some excellent inter-team passing created some goal scoring opportunities, which were converted. A very pleasing second half gave OBH a comfortable lead, and the boys finished the game ahead of the Holmwood boys. Well done, to both sets of boys for a competitive and exciting match. 3 rd VII v Holmwood House It was great to see the boys playing attractive hockey in this opening fixture of the second half of term. The extra tackling practice in practice sessions assisted the OBH boys well taking the ball off the opposition and then setting up attacking opportunities. The goals that were scored came from good team work when the ball was released to the wings from our defence. Through strong passing and interlinking they were able to shoot with intent as well as pass the ball around and slot it neatly into the back of the goal for a good win. Well done, to all the boys and keep practicing the basics before the weekend. 4 th VII v Holmwood House The mighty fourths played some lovely hockey to win the fixture convincingly. Plenty of good passing and movement off the ball allowed players the freedom to shoot with confidence when in the opposition D. Plenty of good tackling and dribbling when space available enabling the boys to use the wings and shoot the ball past their goal keeper who made some wonderful saves. In the second half Holmwood developed their passing skills and pulled one goal back before the end of the game. Well done, to the whole squad and with plenty of practice and speed in all areas, more goals will bring further success. 5 th VII v Framlingham Prep Playing against a strong Framlingham 5 th team, the boys sadly went down 4-1. They had some positive moments in attack, moving the ball well, but could not hit the target with enough power to trouble the goalkeeper. Defensively they were slow to close down and tackle, hence conceding too many soft goals. Thomas Berryman, however, was outstanding in defence and Javier Aragon scored a deserved late goal.

Boys Sport Colts A v Orwell Park The Colts A team had a poor first half which enabled the opposition to control the game and score a number of easy goals. The boy s work rate and passing improved in the second half. They passed the ball with pace and started to move off the ball into space. Another goal by OBH was pleasing to see but Orwell Park came away as the deserved winners. Colts B v Orwell Park The Colts B started off the game very well. They pressurized the Orwell Park team and looked a threat in attack. The game was 0-0 at half time and so it was all to play for. In the second half the boy s gave the ball away too easily which enabled the opposition to score a couple of easy goals. OBH never got back to the way they played in the first half of the game and lost the match 4-0. Mum s Tennis: Mum's tennis has resumed after the half term break, although winter still seems to be upon us! If any parent would like to come along from next Monday, It runs every Monday from am, costing 45 for the block (as before) with Mr Perry running the sessions. It is very much the hope that these sessions offer a wonderful opportunity to play a brilliant sport, meet some new friends and enjoy a good work-out. If you would like to book or if you require any further info, please josh.bolt@obh.co.uk. Please note that spaces are limited. Thank you! Colts C v Orwell Park OBH found themselves up against a strong Orwell team and they did their utmost to soak up the pressure they were under. The opposition moved the ball around effectively and scored four good goals. OBH did create a few of their own chances and deserved to find the back of the net with the last shot of the game. Colts D v Orwell Park The D team needed to be more proactive in the tackle in this encounter. This meant that they did not have enough possession to create scoring opportunities of their own. They do deserve credit for their efforts to defend in the D, which frustrated their opponents. However, Orwell did score on two occasions and deserved the victory.

And finally Dear Parents You will by now, I am sure, have read Nick Bullen s letter announcing David Griffiths appointment as the next Head of OBH. The whole school community should be delighted that David will be taking over the reins in September. From a personal point of view it was clear that he was the outstanding choice, from a very strong field, and it is reassuring to know that OBH will be in such safe hands. David and I will be working closely together over the next six months to ensure a smooth transition and will be planning a number of events for you all to get a chance to meet both David and Becky. David and I share the same exciting vision for OBH and I know that he will do an exceptional job. Best wishes Tom O Sullivan Headmaster David Griffiths with his wife Becky and their children Lucy, Llywelyn and Gwenllian
