A Busy Week in Stable Yard. Well done to all the children for another exciting and hard -working week. This week, Year 4 have been looking at our eyes. We used the ipads to take some close-up pictures of our eyes and then labelled all of the parts that we could see. Meanwhile in geography, the children have been studying the structure of the earth and made some excellent models from playdough showing the core, mantle and crust. Year 3 have investigated and found different examples of living and non-living things around the school grounds to help with our understanding of the seven life processes. We held our Middle School Assembly this week. Well done to Jeremy Sibun, Harry Burstow, Rose Williams, Maya Guthrie, Sophie English and George Roberts who all received certificates this week for their excellent work in English and maths. Congratulations to Sophie Pryce, Jeremy Sibun, Hugo Finster, Trixie Morgan and Zachary Fowles who have now received their Pen Licence. Another well-deserved congratulations to Sophie Pryce who has completed all of her times table targets. We wish you all a restful weekend with your children. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott and Mr Pascalides. Notices Tuesday 23 January Year 3: Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge Year 3 are simply loving their Ancient Egyptian topic. They have been improving their map skills and locating Egypt on a world map. We will have the chance to look at many interesting artefacts and will be given a tour of all of the Egyptian exhibits. The children should come into school wearing their Sunday Best including their jumper and blazer. There is no cost for the trip and the children will be provided with a packed lunch and a snack. There will be sign up sheets up in the classrooms next week and will provide parents with feedback from the recent CAT tests. Outdoor Clothes Winter is still with us! Please can all children have a waterproof coat and a pair of named wellies in school at all times.

OBH MAKING A DIFFERENCE UPDATE Dynamic Design Water Aid Today we welcomed Mr and Mrs Willis from Water Aid. They gave a fascinating and inspiring talk to the whole school in Assembly. They encouraged the children to appreciate how we all take water for granted and to understand how vast numbers of people in other countries desperately need clean water to drink, cook with and wash in. After Assembly they ran an interactive workshop for Years 1 to 4. The children had lots of fun playing games and learning about why clean water is so important. The Fun Run and World Water Day Thursday 22 nd March Plans are underway for the annual Toddle Waddle and Fun Run. It will take place on Thursday 22 nd March and sponsor forms will be sent out just before half term, more details to follow. World Water Day happens on the same day, so OBH will be going 'blue for water'. All the children will be asked to donate 1 to wear a blue outfit, if they want to join in. We are also planning to challenge teams of children to walk the average distance an African child has walk to get water every day. A distance of 6km carrying 10lbs of water. This will take place in the week leading up to the Fun Run. Year 3 and Year 6 have been celebrating the end of their Systems and Electronics Projects with some really wonderful results. 3EW have created their own squeezy torches and creating their monograms using the Imonogram App on the Ipad. Meanwhile, Year 6 have been working on creating their very own airboats, using Vintage Design App to create the logos for their hulls. When the pool has warmed up a little, we will be racing their boats there is a sense of tension at the upcoming competition! Who will win? Stan the Van or maybe The Kracken? The results are super, it is wonderful to see the children have a real sense of pride in their work and I think the big smiles speak for themselves! Well done all.

Boarding The boys and girls have now settled back into the boarding houses and with some trepidation they began Saturday evening somewhat bemused by the tasks that were set by Lord Buckenham. Mallow Movers provided a stern test whilst Balloon Bread found the children weighing helium balloons down with a loaf of bread. How bizarre you might think! However, the children began to engage lateral thinking and ingenuity to achieve the best results possible. Other immeasurable tasks were taken on and the children had great fun especially when creating their Scooby Portraits with a single toilet roll. Mr O Sullivan was keen to leave a picture of Scooby so that they could complete the most accurate portraits possible. We can firmly say that this task was open widely to interpretation and it is safe to say that Mr O Sullivan was not willing to pay a commission to have the job done professionally by any of the groups. The CHINISPS Team presented a portrait that conformed well to the task and was awarded the prize. Many thanks to Mrs Miller and Madame Cubitt for the parts they played and bringing out the competitive side of each task. Further team tasks occurred and it was great to see the boys and girls being competitive and enjoying themselves. THE KATHMAN- DUDES came out as the Supreme Taskmaster Champions and received some lovely treats as part of their prize. Fun Nights in Spero Sunday morning began with a relaxed breakfast until church and then some free time before Professor McGonagall, Hagrid and Moaning Myrtle flew around the grounds setting up the Quidditch pitch. The boys and girls had a splendid lunch before preparing their broomsticks for the inaugural match between the Griffinclaws and the Slitherhuffs. Bizarre shaped snitches in socks eluded the seekers for most of the afternoon whilst the bludgers entered into the spirit of the game throwing quaffles at almost anyone who passed by. One game paused as interference on the play, by none other than Scooby, caused the teams to go into a state of shock as experienced by Ron Weasley. Hagrid came to the rescue and all continued before the end of the game. Well done to all the muggles for their enthusiasm in events all weekend and many thanks to Dr Marshall (aka Hagrid) and Mrs Bolton (aka Professor McGonagall) for their magical powers as well.

Boarding Events to come. Please could parents of Full boarders, who will be in next weekend (27-28 January), sign the BOUNCE WAIVER so that your child can take part in the trampolining activity. The waiver can be found at or please read and sign a copy from the office on Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Thank you for your help in advance with this matter. Boarding queries Please feel free to Tracey (tracey.thornton@obh.co.uk) or Rob Miller (rob.miller@obh.co.uk) if you have any questions about the boarding weekend programme for this term which has been sent out or can be found on the website. Please also inform us, as per usual, of any changes to your son or daughter s boarding nights as the term progresses.

Pre-Prep & Nursery A Peek at our Week The Nursery Hedgehogs have welcome two new class members this week - Hattie and Daisy. Both girls have settled in very quickly. On Wednesday, the children went on a very windy walk, collecting stones to make story stones based on the story One snowy night. I am particularly in love with the new natural area in Nursery Mrs Pugh has turned a corner of the classroom into a relaxing area with an outside feel. The children are loving spending time in there. This week Grasshopper class have continued to think about their topic of travelling around the world and have spent time thinking particularly about London. The children had great fun pretending they were on the London Underground and have looked at lots of famous land marks. The children have also been impressing Mrs Gillott and Mrs Barrett with their subtraction work. Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Imogen Ball Gus Burstow Nixon Johnson James Bolton Birthday Assembly This week Acorn class have been working really hard to understand money. They used Numicon to help understand the value of different coins and enjoyed writing number sentences on the tables! Their work for the art competition is complete and the children are looking forward to it being sent off and seeing their paintings on postcards. Woodpeckers have been doing some brilliant non-fiction writing this week. They learnt all about the different elements which make up a newspaper and spent two lessons writing some very impressive newspaper articles based on fairy tales. They also had a fun science lesson, learning how to take care of their teeth the children used Ceplac to see where the plaque is on their teeth, then they brushed their teeth to remove the plaque. Baby and Toddler group grows! Our baby and toddler group started again on Tuesday, with a bumper number of visitors it was so lovely to welcome so many new faces, as well as our lovely regulars. We kicked off with a New Year theme - the little ones hand printed 2018 calendars and enjoyed a small world area, messy tuff tray and music with me! Next week, Miss Sarah will be joining us for a toddler dance & drama session at no extra cost to the mummies, so do please spread the word. Have a lovely weekend. Camilla Webster Birthday Assembly We celebrated two birthdays on Monday Gus Burstow was 6 last week and Charlotte Barberini was 6 on Monday itself. They did some brilliant maths and blew 3 candles out each!

Our week in Pre-Prep & Nursery

From the Director of Sport.. Girls Sport U11 Netball U13A Netball v The Leys and Moreton Hall Following the disappointment of the cancelled Framlingham tournament, the girls were keen to get on the court for competitive netball and a first win. The two matches were about getting the girls as much court time as possible and the opportunity for us to look at different combinations and positions. OBH started well, taking the lead by a few goals but the Leys were working hard to keep with OBH yet were unable to convert their shots which enabled OBH to gradually increase the lead, winning A great victory to start the season with lots of positives and plenty to work on. Our second match was against a very good Moreton Hall. The girls watched them beat The Leys by a significant margin so knew it was going to be hard work. Morton had shown physical strength and great speed in their first match, so the plan was to slow down Moreton s second move. OBH continued to work hard but unfortunately were not able to get the ball to the shooters. No matter, the girls will have learnt much from these fixtures going into next week s match against Framlingham Prep. U13B Netball Triangular v The Leys and Moreton Hall The U13B squad, enjoyed their opening match against The Leys, and were 5-0 up at half time courtesy of Clara Middleton (GS) and Arabella Richardson (GA) with the whole team pushing the ball up the court beautifully. Annabelle Ball and Sienna Wheeler in the centre third worked very hard to keep possession. During the second half, The Leys made a few tactical changes and started catching up with some lovely long goals from their GS, however we held on to win with a final score of 8-2. Well done girls. In our second match against Moreton Hall, the girls were outclassed by an opposition who could read our every move, and could intercept balls and make swift passes before we could react. During the first half we did well to keep the score line to 0-2, but lost ground quickly in the second half to lose the match 1-9. Keep your heads up girls and keep fighting to the end. A great afternoon with much to learn but all in all a promising start. Well done, girls. U11A Netball v Moreton Hall On Wednesday the U11s travelled to Moreton Hall to play their first Netball match of the season. Luckily this was played inside and out of the wind. The match started steadily with OBH sneaking ahead 3-2. In the second quarter the shooters had gained confidence and managed to put 5 goals on the scoreboard. This was followed by a further 5 in the third quarter, bringing the score to 13-5 to OBH. The girls played good attacking Netball & passed the ball up the court well. In defence there were some great interceptions & we were able to keep a high percentage of possession. Apart from a cameo appearance from Lily s dog all went smoothly and the team secured a 15-6 win. A great start to the season. Well played, girls. Girls Cricket Training Venue Change The Girls U13 cricket practice organised at Ipswich School on Tuesday 23rd January will now take place at OBH starting at 4pm. Iain Fletcher is coming in to run a session with the U13 Girls.

Boys Sport 3rd & 4th VII v The Leys Saturday training festival: Framlingham Prep, Taverham A & B and Beeston Hall On Saturday we hosted a training afternoon for the U13 boys, just to blow away any Christmas cobwebs that may still be lurking! It was a competitive afternoon, and an excellent chance to see lots of boys play in different positions. Although the B team had a tough time competing against the other schools A teams, it was hugely pleasing to see their commitment and work rate on the pitch, they should be commended for their excellent all round attitude. The A team drew three games and won two which was a fair reflection at this stage of the season. Well done to all the boys. 1 st VII v The Leys The boys started their season well, with a win against the Leys on Wednesday. They are still getting to grips with new structures and formation but it was pleasing to see some good heads up hockey throughout the afternoon. There will be some tougher tests ahead, Framlingham Prep being one of them next Wednesday, and the County Finals on Friday. We will need to work hard on mastering the basics and ensuring we convert our chances in these two highly competitive fixtures. A pleasing start to the season. 2 nd VII v The Leys This was an exciting game with OBH working hard for possession. Our structure seemed to work well with the boys passing the ball with speed and accuracy and, finding space for our attackers to challenge a well drilled defence. OBH found the back of the net early on in the first half and then capitalised on their early lead just before half time. The second half was much closer but the OBH boys worked hard both in attack and defence and extended their lead, adding two more well converted goals. Well done to all the squad for a good start, but plenty of work to do in training before we play Framlingham. 3 rd VII Boys Hockey v The Leys The boys were very excited before the whistle signaled the start of the season. A squad of 9 were enthusiastic and played some lovely hockey throughout the game. The passing was good and the players moved nicely into space so that the opposition were left scrambling in defense. We opened the scoring early into the first-half and then with some strong tackling and good skills we were able to score again before half-time. With plenty of rotation of players happening, people were keen to show their ability in all areas and the boys should be proud of their efforts. A great start to the season boys so keep practicing hard and enjoy your sport. 4 th VII Boys Hockey v The Leys The mighty fours strode confidently out onto the pitch looking forward to their first fixture. Good skills were shown and plenty of grit and determination when tackling, enabling the boys to pile pressure on the opposition s goal. Chances came and went and the frustration at not scoring was growing from the expectant crowd on the sidelines. The second half started well with players swapping every five minutes and the boys keen to impress. Eventually the ball crossed the opposition goal line after several short corners and the boys gained a welldeserved victory. Keep working hard boys in practice and continue to enjoy your hockey throughout the season.

And finally Dear Parents, The Water Aid assembly and workshop this morning gave the children a great deal to think about. Having voted for Water Aid as one of our two charities to support this year, many children clearly already knew how important their work is but even so I think the scale of the problem was hard to comprehend. Over 2.5 billion people (2/5ths of the world s population) do not have access to both clean water and appropriate sanitation. The fund raising, and awareness raising, over the next few months that the children do, will make a small but really significant difference. Every 15 raised will allow one person permanent access to clean water. Let us see how many 15 s we can raise as a school! Next week is a busy week of sporting fixtures and tournaments and ends with our Winter Open Morning on Saturday. If you know anyone who is thinking of paying us a visit, do encourage them to come on Saturday. It is a great opportunity for them to see the school in action. Our Year 3 s are looking forward to their trip to The Fitzwilliam Museum on Thursday while the Year 7 s will be having a masterclass from Samah Naga, the Head of Arabic at Oundle on the same day. The School Council meets for the first time this term next Thursday, which is always an enjoyable and enlightening experience, meanwhile it is Poetry Week in Pre-Prep. Regarding any note about the most appropriate people to speak to about different issues last week, following the changing of deputy heads, I did not mention that the key people in the Pre-Prep and Middle School to speak to remain the respective Heads, namely Camilla Webster and Emily Warren. The children have had a highly impressive first two weeks back at school. The extra days now that the children start back on a Tuesday and not Thursdays have made a real difference, allowing the children to settle back quickly into the school routine. Have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
