1 Friday 12 th October 2018 Barfield News Victorians for a Day Reception learned all about life in the past at the Tilford Rural Life Centre. They found out about old farming tools and did the washing the old-fashioned way using a washboard, washing dolly and a mangle. They had a lesson in the old school house and did their work on slates. Afterwards they played with Victorian style toys out on the lawn. They had a great day and learned a lot about life in the past. 2 Stepping Back in Time The Year 1 children had a great day out at the Weald and Downland Museum. They were fascinated by the houses from different periods of time. The children compared similarities and differences of houses from Anglo-Saxon to Victorian times. The highlight of the trip was of course...the Tudor toilet! The children were quite shocked at the living conditions and lack of electricity! We look forward to learning more about houses and homes in the past. 3 As part of our Boosters Programme, this week the children in Years 3-7 enjoyed their first Mindfulness and Meditation session, which was led by Mrs Elliott (currently completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training). Throughout the 35 minutes the children demonstrated huge progress in terms of their willingness to engage with mindfulness and experience a number of different yoga postures. It was great to hear the comments afterwards which included: I went to another planet, I could hear my heart beat and my breathing and it made me feel so calm. The atmosphere was so well received that some pupils requested more opportunities to engage with mindfulness and meditation, which we will be considered for the future. Grace Elliott PUPIL PARLIAMENT BAKE SALE Friday 19 th October pm All contributions, homemade or bought, will be much appreciated. Please take your goodies to the Front Office from Wednesday 17 th onwards. All items will be priced at 20p or 50p so please get your small change at the ready! Every Tuesday night there is a Dads Five-a-Side kick about which takes place at school. If you are interested in coming along please contact Tony Davis on for details. No weekly commitment is required; just decide each week if you fancy coming along for a play and maybe afterwards a pint.

4 During one of my lesson observations this week I was lucky enough to be part of a Year 2 Science lesson. The children were learning about Classification and Life Processes with Miss Forder. They were comparing mammals to fish using the Whiteboard, Chromebooks, mind maps, drawings and lots of discussion. Everyone was so engaged in the lesson and all showed huge progress in their knowledge! I was so impressed with their Scientific language too: "Fish are cold blooded and mammals are warm blooded; this means they cannot regulate their temperature" - Sam "Mammals carry their babies in their wombs in their tummies and fish lay eggs in the water" - Flo "Fish and Mammals have backbones. That means they are vertebrates." - Connie "Mammals eat meat. They are carnivores." - Harry "Fish use gills to breath and mammals use lungs" - Senna It was a wonderful lesson, topped off by the fantastic opportunity to handle real fish as a way of touching, exploring and applying what they had learned. 5 MATCH ROUND-UP U10 Football Tournament hosted by Charterhouse On Monday 8th October 2018 our Under 10 team travelled to Charterhouse to take part in their annual Under 10 Football tournament. 20 Schools from around Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire came together to take part in this tournament. We were drawn to play 4 matches in probably one of the toughest groups. We knew that we would be very much the underdogs against schools with huge numbers from which to select in comparison to Barfield. The team worked well together in our first game against Eagle House. Unfortunately we went a goal down against the run of play mid-way through the first half, but just before the half-time whistle we were awarded a corner. Aidan Davis delivered a great ball into the goalkeeper s area, which was met by the head of Willoughby Sturridge. In the second half we continued to work hard and the game ended 1 1. In our second game against Parkside School, the score was 0 0 until, with only 3 minutes remaining, Parkside took the lead and scored a second goal just before the final whistle. We then played Arnold School, who had previously put 6 goals past Parkside. Again we battled hard, but fatigue was beginning to show in our team s performance. Arnold School took advantage of this and managed to beat us 4 0. In the final game we played Downsend who had some very talented players. They put 5 goals past us, but we did manage to pull one back prior to the end of the game. A good run by William Anderson on the left wing followed by a through ball to Willoughby Sturridge allowed him to place the ball in the net past their goalkeeper. Our boys enjoyed the experience of playing against some very strong opposition and hopefully we can use this experience to improve their game in future matches as we progress through the term. Well done to all the boys who took part. 6 Barfield U9 3 v 12 Lyndhurst (Friday 5th October) Our team was really challenged today by a very good team, with an outstanding Goal Attack. Our team had to learn, over the course of the game, to move more positively on court and defend more closely, and they showed improvement during the game. Well done to Johanna Martius-Jones who had to play up a year as we did not have enough Year 4 team members due to illness, and played very well. Player of the match was Lily Avery. Ros Milton Barfield U8 1 v 2 Lyndhurst (Friday 5th October) The Year 3 girls played a High Five match against Lyndhurst. We played a rotational game whereby all changed positions each quarter. This led to a bit of confusion about areas allowed but enabled the girls to experience defence, attack and shooting. Harriet Smith scored onurgoal. Well done everyone. Ros Milton Friday 19 th October 2018 Barfield is delighted to support the Farnham Food Bank again this year and will be donating food items from our Harvest Festival display. The Food Bank has asked for a variety of specific items (listed right) to ensure that there is no wastage. In order to create an impressive display for the children to see at the Harvest Festival Assembly, we rely on the whole school community to donate food items generously. So please search through the kitchen cupboards or pop an extra something into the trolley during your supermarket shop and help us to support our local Food Bank. Please do not contribute any out of date items. Collection boxes will be in Classrooms, the School Office and the Staffroom from Monday 15 th October.. please help to fill these up! Many thanks.
