OBH is supporting Lions Clubs International with their Recycle for Sight programme. Do you have any old glasses that are no longer used? We are collecting both child and adult glasses of any prescription. 10 Credits Rose Williams 30 Pluses Hettie Brown Florence Rook Flo Bidwell Ismene Johnson Flossie Morgan Noah Gillott Rose Williams The glasses will be delivered to the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre where volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. They will then be sent to communities across Africa, India and Eastern Europe. The glasses we donate could help a child to read, an adult to succeed in a job or an older person to stay independent. Glasses can be placed in the special box outside the school office. No cases please! Thank you for your support. And. congratulations to the first pupil in Pre-Prep to get to 50 stickers! This week we have welcomed the return of Edo Tosti and Ale Pisa from Italy who have joined Year 7. They have also been joined in Year 7 by Giorgia Fatrizio, also from Italy and twins, Arthur and Romain Saintville from France. Ale s sister, Maggie has joined him at OBH this year and has been welcomed into Year 5.

3 What s been happening in Stable Yard I hope you all enjoyed a restful half term break with your children. With only a few weeks remaining of this term, it is going to be a busy and productive lead up to the end of this academic year. Sarah Suckling and her wonderful U9 dance group have been practising their dance from The Greatest Showman. The girls are looking forwarding to showcasing their dance during assembly on Friday 15 th June. Parents are welcome to attend. Rehearsals are well underway for the Middle School production of The Blue Crystal. All lines and cues should now be learnt, and Mrs Powell is hopeful that all rehearsals can take place script free. Mr Roberts is helping the children to learn the songs and lyrics. The children will now all be involved in rehearsals during Thursday afternoon activities as it is important that they are all feeling positive and confident. Exams As you will see from the calendar, exam week for the Middle School starts week beginning 18 th June. All revision and preparation will be carried out within lessons. The children will be well prepared, and it is an opportunity for children to showcase what they have learnt across the different subject areas. Exams will begin on Tuesday 19 th June and will be completed in the afternoon of Thursday 21 st June. Monday 18 th June will be spent talking through final exam techniques and answering any lastminute questions. Year 3 have had great fun in maths putting their practical skills to the test while learning about weight. They have also been busy planning and carrying our different investigations within our plant topic in science. They have set up fair tests to prove what all plants need to grow and will be observing the changes over the next few days. I hope that they prove to be more green fingered than Mrs Warren! Within our Ancient Greek topic, Year 3 have been creating a speech to convince their audience of the merits of being a Spartan or an Athenian. The children were passionate and enthusiastic in their delivery and every child took to the stage quite brilliantly. Year 4 was a wonderfully encouraging audience and the majority voted in favour of the Athenian camp. Swimming After the success of the recent swimming gala, we are hoping to use the OBH swimming pool over the next few weeks. Please can all children ensure they have their full swimming kit at school every day. This must include a swimming hat and a pair of flip flops or crocs. Here comes the sun! A reminder that all children should have a named OBH cap, a water bottle and sun cream which should be kept in their classroom.

5 Coast2Cols for Grandad Nick Warren s 550 mile cycle across France in 7 days Nick Warren (Year 8) is embarking on a mammoth challenge straight after the end of term to raise money for the Alzheimer s Society, by cycling from Calais to the French Alps in seven days! This will be a distance of 550 miles at between miles per day, with no support crew and only his dad for company. This is a challenge that would make most adults very nervous, but Nick has a very good reason for taking this on. Nick s grandfather lost his long battle with Alzheimer s just before Easter, and that loss has inspired him to take the opportunity to raise money for further research in the hope that other families might avoid the great sadness of watching a loved one suffer in the way that his has. His target is 2,500 although he would be delighted to exceed it! Nick has been training over Easter and half-term, building the miles and also taking on some big climbs in the French Alps, with the main event starting on Monday 9 th July. The challenge is not only to deal with the significant distance, but also whatever the weather throws at him, the fatigue and a sore backside, as well as any mechanical issues that are experienced along the way. The Jura mountains also need to be crossed before the Alps, and the ride will also involve climbing 4,700 metres of hills, which is the same height as Mont Blanc, Europe s highest peak. There will be daily updates, photos and videos on the Facebook page (@Coast2Cols) during the ride and there is also a Just Giving page if any members of the OBH community feel inspired to support his efforts: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/someonespecial/ NickWarrenCoast2ColsforGrandad Please do support him if you can, and if you see him around OBH on a bike, give him a wave!

6 OBH Making a Difference We have just been informed that OBH has been chosen as one of six winners in the WaterAid School of the Year Award! We are thrilled to have received this award which recognises the contribution that the whole school community has made in raising awareness and funds in support of WaterAid whose goal is to bring clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere within a generation. An update from OSCAR Foundation CBBC will be broadcasting My Life: Mumbai Street Strikers on Monday 11th June at on CBBC which features some of the children that visited OBH as part of their OSCAR U14 UK Football tour. The tour was a huge success and has been a springboard for further development for the Foundation as a whole and individuals. All of the boys continue to be inspiring role models for their peers, five of the boys have been selected to play in overseas tournaments in Spain and Portugal and there is going to be the OSCAR #kicklikeagirl U17 UK Tour in October.

7 The Boarder s Week.. Spero It was great to welcome back all the boarders throughout this first week of the second half of term. Smart haircuts and tales of trips to attractions both at home and abroad have been told whilst the evening activities have been enjoyed in the warm summer sunshine. The pool has been awash with casual swimmers from all age groups and all have been able to cool off before resuming the evening up in the boarding houses. It has been good to welcome our overseas students from Italy and France and we hope that they settle in well and are able to enjoy the surroundings and activities available to the boarders at the weekends and during the week. On Saturday evening the boys and girls will be enjoying Mud Packs & Pies and then on Sunday morning the parents have been invited to play tennis and golf with their children in this yearly event and we hope that the weather and the greens run smoothly. We welcomed Maggie Pisa, all the way from Italy, and Isla Pugh into the House this week. Spero has thoroughly enjoyed the warm evenings since half term. The pool has been in full swing and cyclists are belting around every corner. Upstairs the boys have been playing cut throat games of vingt et un and the girls are churning out poms - poms faster than we can find use for them. Think dark casino covered in balls of fluff!! Events.. We are looking forward to celebrating the birthdays of Max Milner and Sam Harrison over the weekend as we indulge in the tremendous cakes and treats provided by the kitchen staff on these occasions. Well done to all the Year 8 boys and girls for completing their exams and we hope that they can enjoy their programme of events and continue to use and develop their skills through the activities that they participate in.

8 obh mail Daisy Day On Friday 25th May the school was awash with yellow and white outfits in support of our school charity, For Daisy and Brain Cancer Research. The day began with a thought provoking and inspiring assembly by 4NP which raised awareness and understanding of the work of the charity. During the morning the Pre-Prep created daisies in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from chalk drawings in the playground to beautiful cards. The hotly contested Daisy relay was the finale to the House Swimming Gala in the afternoon. A Daisy cake and ice cream sale run by the Friends, rounded off the day with some extra special cakes baked by our star bakers. Thank you everyone for your support.

9 Pre-Prep & Nursery A Peek at our Week Hedgehogs have been reading the book Have you filled a bucket today? We are learning that when we make other people happy, we make ourselves happy too. We have been thinking of words and actions that make us happy, for example sharing and saying thank you. We have been using our literacy time write thank you letters and in maths we have been working on capacity full and empty. Even the baby dolls have had a bath during the water play! Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Jack Barton Willow Morgan Oban Pugh Arabella Kendal This week Grasshopper Class have been looking at money and using coins to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s. We also thought about how much different items might cost. On Wednesday Grasshooper Class had a visit from Paddy the dog and Tracy. The children were very excited that they had taken them up on their invitation to come and visit. The children asked lots of questions and some of the children even got to take Paddy for a walk. Acorns have been planting beans in science and competing a series of Mystery Maths investigations. We had to become detectives to solve clues using different maths skills and using those clues to illuminate various culprits. Our literacy lessons have all been based around the story Anancy and Mr Dry-Bone, beginning the week with some drama by acting out the story and continuing to start writing our own versions. The Woodpeckers have been enjoying planning and writing their next BIG WRITE. As our theme this term is Space, we used a wonderful vimeo clip of a little girl meeting a Moon Creature as our story starter. Some of the children used the same characters, but some took inspiration from their own interests and wrote about meeting dinosaurs, aliens and tropical animals. Birthdays Orlando Wells celebrated his birthday this week, turning 7 on Thursday. He tried to blow all the candles out in one go, but there was a sneaky one on the end which caught him out, much to the amusement of all the children!

10 Life s a beach! We had a bumper delivery of sand today which has filled up our huge sandpit in the walled garden, as well as the new sandpit in the whispering garden and a few others dotted around the Pre-Prep. Along with Mr. Rob s amazing shelter, that he is building over the sand pit, and a new delivery of spades and sieves on the way, the children should have a lovely last few weeks of digging and getting sandy! Marvellous assembly Mrs Pugh did a wonderful assembly this week, continuing our theme of normal people who have achieved amazing things. She started the assembly by showing the children a picture of an astronaut and asking if they could come up with some names interestingly, they all said men s names. Then Mrs Pugh read them the story about Samantha, a female astronaut. They talked about food in space and wondered what would happen if we took ice cream up. They all laughed and one pupil said that if it went to it would melt, because is the hottest planet. Then she showed them the real astronaut ice-cream (brought from the space shop in America) and the children all went wooooow! The children all know this, but please feel free to borrow one of our books from the front hall to read about more normal people, who have done amazing things: Goodnight stories for Rebel Girls & Stories for Boys who dare to be different. Have a lovely weekend, Camilla Webster Pre-Prep PE & Tennis We have had a very exciting week in PE and Games this week, where all of the children have learnt to long jump into the pit. All I can say is WOW and never underestimate our children! They were amazing and because of this I am going to add it to our Sports afternoon in July. Another amazing event of the week is that our very own Orlando was selected to represent OBH along with three Year 3's in the Mini Red Tennis area round. All 4 boys did extremely well and won the tournament which means they qualified for today s finals! I will let you know the result next week! Congratulations Orlando, we are all very proud of you. 11 From the Sports Desk.. House Swimming We managed to organise a warm afternoon for the House Swimming this year, and with half term on the horizon the children were ready to give their all for their Houses knowing they would have a week to recover! The Houses were very close right up to the final relays, but this year it was that took the title of House Swimming champions, followed closely by,, and then. Congratulations to William Roberts in the U10 Breaststroke, and Freddie Harrison in the U11 Front Crawl, both breaking existing school records. Well done, to all the children for a competitive and fun event. Mothers & Pupils Tennis Parents & Pupils Golf This is just a reminder that both the golf and tennis starts at 9.30 am on Sunday morning. Mr Perry will be there to organise the tennis and I will be setting the golfers off. Please meet by the cricket nets for registration. Hopefully no waterproofs needed! Girls Sport... U9 Tournament at Orwell Park Another trip to Orwell Park and it was a lot warmer there than it normally is! The girls played in a mini 6 aside tournament, 3 matches, batting two overs per pair and all bowling one over each. OBH faced New Hall first and having not played them before, were unsure what to expect. OBH were put into bat first and made a respectable 141. OBH then took to the field knowing they needed to be tight and stop as many runs as possible. The girls fielded well but unfortunately just was not enough and just missed out on a win by 7 runs. OBH played the hosts for the second time this term and following a large defeat previously, the girls were not overly confident but..it was definitely the match of the term so far. The girls lost by just 8 runs but proved how much they have improved, they were all outstanding. They went into the final match against a strong Framlingham Prep full of confidence but soon fatigue and heat took its toll and unfortunately suffered a heavy defeat. Onwards and upwards and onto the next set of fixtures! Well done, girls - you did OBH proud! Tennis A big well done to Edmund Hills, Hugo Finster, Zachary Fowles and Orlando Wells who make up the U8 boys tennis team and won a closely fought competition against South Lee, St. Felix and Ipswich Prep to qualify for county finals (top four schools in the county). Hot off the press! Today saw the Year 3 boys tennis team compete in their county finals at Framlingham Prep School. After a brilliant semi final win against Framlingham A which saw the match tied at 3 wins each, points scored decided the winners and we were on top 53:49 so we took our place in the final. Culford were our opponents in a well balanced final, and Zachary Fowles and Edmund Hills put us in with a chance of a victory with their brilliant singles match wins, but Culford came back and ended up taking the victory 4:2. Hugo Finster and Orlando Wells only just missing out on victory with the matches poised half way through, and the doubles pairings both incredibly close on the scorecards. A brilliant Silver medal performance and the title of 2nd best Year 3 boys team in the county. A massive congratulations to the team members; Zachary Fowles, Orlando Wells, Hugo Finster, and Edmund Hills for their hard work and training throughout the year.

12 Girls Sport.. U13A Cricket v South Lee An exciting and closely fought match took place against South Lee on Wednesday on the Suffolk County Cricket 1st team pitch at the Victory Grounds in Bury St. Edmunds. We played a 20:20 game and OBH fielded first. The bowling was accurate and well paced, but the South Lee batswomen got off to a good start, which then steadied a little. As the innings went on, more pressure was being applied by the bowlers and in the 11th over we took our first wicket. They then began to fall more readily with one in the 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th and 19th overs. South Lee scored a total of 96 runs and after tea it was OBH s turn to bat. Unfortunately the wickets fell fast and hard and we lost 5 in the first 6 overs. This lead to a somewhat nervous atmosphere at the crease which was settled, steadied and then the runs built up by the pairing of Adriana Fernandez and Ella Pryke. By the 13th over we were clear by 8 runs and then lost a further 3 wickets in consecutive overs. This allowed the retired batswomen to return to the crease with 3 runs to get from 3 overs, with strict instructions not to loose a wicket. South Lee bowled well and put the batters under pressure, however, they rose to the challenge and batted with a sensible head keeping themselves in and scoring a further 18 runs. The final score was 114 runs for OBH against 96 for South Lee. A well contested game and one in which the girls have hopefully learnt the importance of playing themselves in at the crease before going for the big shots. U11 Girls Girls U11 v South Lee A good game of cricket was played by both sides who are still learning the necessary skills from every match that they play in. We fielded first and the bowling was accurate and therefore we conceded less extras which was pleasing to see. It was great to have the whole squad of girls involved and to see the improvements that they have made since the beginning of the season. They ran between the wickets with greater speed having hit the ball with greater consistency, finding the boundary on numerous occasions. Well done, to all the girls and enjoy the second half of the season. Be ACTIVE and more vocal when fielding!! Freya Harrison Former pupil, Freya Harrison, is the cover star on the summer edition of the Independent School Parent magazine. Freya is captain of 1st Girls Cricket team at Rugby School and currently studying Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Sports Science A Levels with a view to studying aerospace engineering at university. U13B Girls Cricket v South Lee The girls travelled to South Lee and were very excited and elected to field first. Their bowling showed real signs of improvement with only 13 wides/no balls in the whole innings! Well done, girls! There was some good fielding and South Lee were on 194 at the end of the innings. Charlotte Allen and Shiyao Liu went into bat first and as a pair got 43 runs awesome girls! Annabel Ball and Lucia Murillo were unlucky and lost just one wicket but still managed to score 29 runs, and the final pairing of Arabella Richardson and Ines Vila scored 47. A great achievement girls and fully deserved victory! OBH final score of 219.

13 Boys Sport. Colts B v South Lee 1 st XI v Woodbridge The 1 st XI continued its winning form with a 68-run victory against Woodbridge. Batting first, we scored 133 for 4 from 20 overs against a tidy bowling attack. Caspar Hall (32) and Oliver Stanton (42) put on an opening partnership of 54, followed by useful contributions from Sam Harrison and William Cardozo. As well as two run outs, seven different bowlers took at least one wicket, with Freddie de la Rue taking two in two balls. We bowled out Woodbridge for 65 to round off a pleasing win in our last home match of the season. 2 nd XI Cricket v South Lee On Wednesday the OBH boy s 2 nd team played against South Lee. South Lee won the toss and decided to bat first. The bowling at times was inconsistent however, there was some strong fielding and the opposition finished their innings on 64 runs. After tea OBH went into bat and with two wickets down and eight overs completed they managed to pass the South Lee total. Our fifth match of the season was a particularly exciting one with the boys working very hard, individually and collectively to pull off a thoroughly well deserved third victory. After choosing to bat we slowly but surely built up a score that initially looked a little low. However the strength and depth of our bowling has been commented on by all of our opposing coaches to date and so it was to prove every one of our bowlers played their part in removing all of South Lea s batsmen with an over to spare. Once our batting reaches the same high standards as our bowling this group of boys will become a force to be reckoned with on our circuit. U12 v St Joseph s Bunbury Cup The U12s secured a win against St Joseph s to progress through to the Bunbury Cup finals day. Opting to bowl first, we managed to restrict the opposition to 81 for 6 with the wickets shared between Ned Nunn, Fergus Sprott, Joshua Hearn and Freddie Harrison. In our chase, Ned Nunn (44*) and Orlando Erith (42*) opened the innings and played very well as we reached our target in the 14 th over. Well played, all! Colts A v South Lee Due to some fine bowling from the South Lee openers, OBH had a shaky start to this encounter. Nonetheless, they began to score more effectively and, once again, good calling enabled them to find some excellent quick singles along the way. They ultimately posted a good score of 118 for the visitors to chase. OBH demonstrated some accurate bowling right from the outset and made life difficult for the batsman. South Lee did score some good runs in their attempt to stay in the game, but eventually, OBH were able to take all the wickets required and secured another fine victory. Most of the squad, can now look forward to the Sixes tournament at Orwell on Saturday! Colts C v Fairstead House I was very much looking forward to seeing the boys play against Fairstead House on Wednesday. It had been a while since I have seen the boys in action and keen to see how much they have improved. OBH batted first and were much more confident with their batting. Clear calling, and positive running gave us a total of 127, for the loss of only 3 wickets. In return Fairstead House only managed 77, largely due to some accurate and consistent bowling from some of the boys. There is still work to be done with some bowling actions, but I am delighted with their progress. Well done.

14 And finally Well, Common Entrance is now finished (as you can see from the colourful pictures!) and as the Year 8s start their Leavers Programme attention switches to the rest of the school with Years 5 7 having exams next week and the Middle School the following week. What has struck many people this week is how relaxed and calm the Year 8s have remained. This has allowed them to perform to their very best. Stressed out children usually panic and do not do themselves justice. Hopefully the rest of the school can follow their example. Well prepared and refreshed children perform well. As we approach the weekend it looks like the fine weather is here to stay and a long weekend of sports, fun and games and parent/child battles await. I hope to see you all in the sunshine.
