What s been happening in Stable Yard Sports Day A reminder that all children in Years 3 and 4 should come into school on Saturday morning dressed in their athletics kit to include House top, white shorts, white socks and trainers. The teachers are so proud of the way that the children in Years 3 and 4 have conducted themselves during exam week. They were well prepared, calm and focused. Well done, to all the children for their hard work and concentration. We will be talking through the exam papers next week and the results will be published with the end of term reports. Regardless of the results, the children will all have honed up their exam technique and will be in a strong position moving forward. Now that exams are out of the way, we can now turn our attention to our Middle School production of The Blue Crystal. The children have all learnt their lines, cues and song words and we are in an excellent position for the final rehearsals. Next week, all the children will be designing a front cover for the programme. Look out for the winning entry! There will also be prizes for other children who have clearly made a terrific effort. Mrs Powell has asked that small water guns or nerf guns can be bought into school as additional props. The bullets can be left at home! We look forward to welcoming you all to our evening performance of the Blue Crystal on Thursday 5 th July starting at 6.30 pm. There will be drinks and canapes served from 6.00 pm in the foyer of the Britten Hall. They should arrive in school at 9.30 am and come straight to their own classrooms where their form teachers will register the classes. We will then walk together to the House tents in time for the start of the Sports Day proceedings. All children should be wearing their OBH navy cap and should have a bottle of sun cream. Drinks will be provided in the House tents. We look forward to seeing all parents with family picnics at 1.00 pm We look forward to seeing many of you at the end of term events. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott, Mr Pascalides and Mrs Powell
Dragons Den Year 8 Entrepreneurs 2018 The Year 8 leavers were tasked with designing a brand new product, never before invented or brought to market, which they thought would make them millionaires! They were split into groups and headed off to research their ideas and see which were the most viable. After much deliberation and a restricted time of two hours in which to create and design a product, they were stood trembling before the four Dragons. Our Dragons this year included Ollie Neil, Alex Gosling, Kate Pryke and Emma Garber. Each team had come up with some strong ideas and had designed a pitch to entice the Dragons to part with their money..never an easy task. Alumni News Leilia Paske Many congratulations to Leilia Paske for being selected to represent the Great British Eventing team at the Racesafe Junior European Championship at Fontainebleau, France in July of this year. Leilia left OBH in 2014 to go to Ipswich High School, is now at studying A Level History, Geography and Religious Studies at Stowe School. Ideas such as VR Fit, Green Energy, Motogen, and Schwimmer were pitched, and all had individual merit. Certainly the Dragons were impressed. The Dragons deliberated for some time before awarding the win to Green Energy. Sienna Wheeler, Adriana Fernandez, Javier Aragon, Sam Harrison, Oscar Rook and Harry Moore were the brains behind this idea of utilising home food waste in a small biomass type generator to create clean energy for individual homes and flats. The children represented themselves beautifully and we will certainly look out for more interesting developments from this class of young entrepreneurs! A huge thank you to our dragons who took their time to consider each idea and grilled each group in a supportive manner and provided both positive feedback and constructive criticism so each could improve. Harry Rowland Congratulations to Harry Rowland, currently at Framlingham College, for his rugby achievements in the past year. Attaining his 1 st International Test cap for Denmark U18s and will also be playing two further Test matches for Denmark later this year. He has also won RFU National Award for an outstanding contribution to the YRA programme
Acitivities: Pond Dipping Gordonstoun Challenge The Gordonstoun Challenge is one of the most famous and iconoclastic events in the UK prep school year. Indeed it is something of a privilege for those schools who are fortunate enough to be invited to send a team to take part in this competition which has been running for nigh on 30 years. With that in mind much time and expertise was spent in ensuring this year's team from OBH would not only do themselves justice but also build upon the good name of OBH itself. And so it proved over the day and a half that Annabel Ball, Violet Mayhew, Scarlett Simmonds, Freddie Bidwell and Edward h faced up to and mastered a great number of physical, technical and creative challenges, all of them with a smile on their face and a grace and unity that drew the admiration of all those who ran the programme and all of their rivals. It was only right and proper that OBH should pull off a commanding victory in the grand finale on the rather grand south lawn on Gordonstoun in front of a large number of dignitaries and assembled guests. This was a weekend that all who were participating in looked forward to with much hope and enthusiasm. It did not disappoint, and as importantly nor did OBH's representatives.
Year 5 Camp Out A Pupils View: The Year 5 Camp Out was amazing. When school finished, we got changed and then carried our things over to the Outdoor Classroom. When everyone had finished putting their tents up, some children played cricket and others played at Rory s Place. When it was time for supper, we had burgers in the Wild Café Mr Swiney made the best burgers in the world! We all had so much fun playing again, until it was time to sit round the camp fire. The biscuits and hot chocolate were delicious. Some children told stories and then we all went into our tents and fell asleep. By Alistair Ball. ************* I strolled down to the camping area which was next to the Outdoor Classroom. I heard the peacock s cries and the snapping of a twig. It took some fanagaling, but we all eventually put up our tents! When it was time to play, I went straight to the trampoline, where Ilyssa, Maggie, Ben, Izzie and I were bouncing and bouncing. Then I heard a voice shout, It s time for supper at the Wild Cafe. I couldn t wait - the burgers were amazing and the efficiency of the waiters was phenomenal. After that, we could play again. I decided to relax; it was paradise. Just as I was dozing off, I heard a voice say, Pudding! Everybody rushed to the Outdoor Classroom, where we had a very nice ice cream. I wrote a special review of the Wild Café and overall I gave it 4 stars. By Charlie Harrison Year 5 Camp Out The Year 5 Camp Out had been greatly anticipated by all the children. It was wonderful to see them working together as we set up the camp site. The girls did a fabulous job of decorating the Outdoor Classroom with flowers on each table and they took all the orders with ease. After supper, everyone had lots of fun playing until it was time to relax by the fire and then head off to bed. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this such a successful and memorable experience for the children. ****************** The Camp Out was amazing and very exciting. We had so much fun organising the Wild Café. Cecilly, Phoebe, Izzie and I took the orders. As the sun began to set, I heard owls hooting, twigs snapping and a peacock cry. We had so much fun putting up out tents; the atmosphere was amazing. Just before we went to bed, we all sat by the fire drinking hot chocolate and listening to stories. Although I didn t get much sleep, I had lots of fun and it was relaxing in our huge tent. Everyone had a wonderful time; thank you to all the teachers who stayed and looked after us. By Isla Pugh.
The Grand OBH Airboat Regatta: Year 6 Year 6 DT inventors took their flotilla of vessels to the swimming pool for our first ever OBH Airboat Regatta on Wednesday. With stunning designs such as Lucy Stanton s gloriously green The Pug, and Elena Garcia s Pink Fluffy Unicorn it was clear that the competition was going to fierce and extremely fashionable. There were many sails, speed stripes, sponsors and dazzling hull designs to aid their attempts to be the champion of the day. With fresh battery -powered engines at the ready, the airboats cruised across the water, as the competitors looked on in anticipation. Sailing conditions for the day were great and we were grateful that there were no adverse tides. I am very pleased to report, that despite one teacherinduced death roll (thank you Ralph for teaching me this term recently) every vessel floated most beautifully, but some gained more momentum than others, unless subjected to one of the more gentle prevailing south-easterly winds. Even the Pre-Prep joined in through the gates to cheer us on! Well done, to Charlie Drake in 6JM and to Lily Myers in 6DN for being our class winners. Congratulations to Rufus Harrison for his super speedy airboat and for being our champion of champions. Mr Swiney was, once again, an amazing MC and Mr Struss was on hand as our lifeguard and international rescue team. Mrs Bolton is now somewhat adept at using the extendable net to fish out stranded airboats and Mr Swiney has a few vessels back in dry dock that require servicing. What a lovely end to Year 6 s time spent in the DT workshop; hopefully this will stand them in good stead for their Year 7 Dragster Car Competition! But will the current Year 7 give them any winning tips, I wonder? CLB
Truly Scrumptious! Mrs Bolton s Year 3 DT group created their own Superfood Smoothies on Monday. As part of the DT curriculum we have been studying Food Technology and our intrepid chefs made their way over to the Cookery Room with a spring in their step (and freshly washed hands!). After perusing through a selection of finest fruits, they made their choices to create their own recipes for their smoothies. Charlie Hearn felt that limiting blueberries was very important, Jeremy Sibun whizzed the banana mix like a pro, Joseph McGrath finely chopped his strawberries with great care, Ruby Cornish carefully selected the very juiciest blueberries with a discerning eye, Sophie Pryce took time to add just enough honey to the sweeten the drink, Trixie Morgan was an ace at organising everyone (even Mrs B!), Imogen Thurlow happily sliced her banana into even chunks, whilst Darcey Reeve made a recipe using the very finest strawberries. Edmund Hills was a whizz-kid on the blitzer. There was much slicing, dicing, mashing and blitzing to be had by all and lots of fun. What a lovely start to the week and I hope it set them up for their exams! Mrs Bolton
The Boarder s Week.. Spero Pack your Bags! Pack your Bags! Have you got your essentials for your expeditions and will the weather stay fair for all sleeping under the stars. Yes, the Year 8 s have sampled the delights of their own cooking masterclass in the woods and their parents have sampled their culinary skills as well when consuming the delights prepared for them at the Banquet dinner. Parents waited apprehensively on the patio enjoying the evening sun and anticipating with great relish the feast ahead. The boarders themselves have enjoyed picnics in the Japanese garden whilst swimming and biking many a mile and building their excitement for The Third OBH Fest this coming Saturday. Congratulations are in order for Fergus Sprott and Xander Brown who joined up kindly to enjoy sticky treats and cakes with all the boys from Year 7 for an OBH double birthday celebration. Plenty of laughter as well as the biggest of screams were heard from the drawing room when the traditional cutting of the cake was performed. We look forward to the excitement of the last two weeks with the Parents cricket matches this Saturday after Sports Day in the morning followed by the Open Boarding weekend. With many bouncy castles and of course a World Cup to consume us all, the children will need to relax and unwind on Sunday before beginning the penultimate fortnight of this wonderful term. May the sun continue to shine so that the children can continue to get the most out of all that is OBH. The weather has been fantastic so everyone has loved their evenings outside making full use of everything the Park has to offer. My particular highlight of the week was Wednesday evening s spontaneous Greatest Showman night. The girls put on a play that culminated in the whole House singing A Million Dreams. The entire school rocked and I noticed visitors creeping up the stairs and peeping through the windows to check out what was going on! It was glorious and, sadly, I did not have the camera to capture it on film but I think we ve picked the House fireside song!!
Pre-Prep & Nursery A Peek at our Week The children in Hedgehogs have been enjoying ordering by size and weight. We used the scales to compare the weight of different stones and used tape measures to compare the height of the children. They have also really impressed themselves by comparing a piece of writing with a similar one from the start of the term it was lovely to see how they have developed and seeing their faces as they realised how well they have done. Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Willow Seymour Emilia Dobbie Nixon Johnson & Valentina David Hugo Hayes This week Grasshoppers have been very busy with the Pre-Prep trip and getting ready for end of year show. Whilst on their trip the children particularly enjoyed exploring all the musical instruments in the forest and spent ages jumping, spinning and hitting the equipment to make a range of different sounds. The children have also enjoyed a swimming lesson as part of their P.E. time this week. It is super to watch their water confidence increase each time we visit the pool. Acorn class had a very exciting lesson measuring the beans that they planted two weeks ago. They were enormous and we had to stand on chairs and tables to be high enough to use the meter sticks! We all took our beans home so they could carry on growing in the garden. The Woodpeckers have been celebrating the World Cup this week. We started of by doing a World Cup sweep stake all the children picked out a team. We filled up the chart by asking other staff who popped in to pick a team even Miss Gallop and Mr. Randell have teams! The children have done lots of excellent work based on the World Cup, from researching their country on ipads and themed poetry, to flag symmetry and World Cup word problems (bit of a mouthful!) Happy Birthday! It is Willow Morgan s birthday on Sunday we all hope you have a wonderful day and enjoy painting your unicorn!
A busy week in Pre-Prep & Nursery Our Day out! We all had such a wonderful time at Thetford Forest on Monday. The weather was perfect not too cold, not too sunny, just right! The children all participated in different learning activities: from Year 2 navigating around the Gruffalo trail with a map and compass, to Nursery, Reception and Year 1 following arrows and signs on the wonderful music trail. Everyone had a great time creating shelters and dens in the woodland. We all enjoyed a picnic under a shady tree and finished the day off with a refreshing ice lolly. Hats and suncream I am sure this goes without saying, but, as the weather is hotting up, please do remember hats and suncream. Our walled garden is a sun trap! I am really looking forward to seeing you at our summer show WHEN I GROW UP on Monday afternoon. Have a lovely weekend. Camilla Webster
Year 6 Boys County Finals From the Sports Desk WOW: what a week for Tennis!! Zachary Fowles A massive well done to Zachary Fowles (Year 3) on winning his first LTA Tennis Tournament last weekend. This is in addition to an undefeated season in singles for our school, where he beat some of the top players in Suffolk. U10 County Finals After qualifying for the county finals with a notable victory over Culford School in the first half term, the U10 boys travelled to Woodbridge school for the Suffolk Schools Orange ball finals. The team, consisting of Oscar Wright, Gus Sprott, Jago Bucher and Charlie Harrison, put in a perfect performance in the semi-final, beating FramLingham A (the favourites) 6-0 with 4 singles and 2 doubles wins. What followed was a nailbiting final against South Lee A, which came right down to the final match, with OBH eventually triumphing 4-2 in an extremely tense and nerve-racking final. The well deserved title "County Champions" is down to their hard work, not just this term, but all year and in all weathers alongside a remarkable ability to play their best tennis when seemingly under the most pressure - well done, boys! Year 6 Girls County Finals The girl s team consisted of Lucy Stanton, Lily Myers, Madison Haworth-Mckenna and Margaux Brown. The girls final came down to a very tense tie- break play off. After all the matches had been played Framlingham Prep and OBH had won an identical 20 games each. The rules required a final tie - break with new partners. Lucy and Madison put up a strong fight, coming back from 2-5, to eventually lose 5-7. But some superb shots were played and OBH were very worthy Today saw the Year 6 boys partake in their County Finals v Framlingham, Ipswich School, and Moreton Hall. We played Ipswich School in the semi-final and after an incredibly close match finishing 3:3, we took our place in the final on games difference In the final we played Framlingham A, and after a great start we found ourselves 2:1 up with the reverse fixtures to play (William Wright winning his singles, Lukas Finster and Rufus Harrison winning their doubles). With the match tied at 2:2, both Lukas Finster (singles) and Diego Suarez and William Wright (doubles) found themselves 3:1 up needing only one more game to become County Champions! Both matches went all the way down to the final few points and even though we had match points in both games, we succumbed to a 4:2 defeat. Nevertheless, what a fantastic performance from the boys and they showed passion, determination, and most importantly played in a lovely spirit and came away with smiles on their faces and can be proud of the title of 2nd best team in the county for their age group. Well done, Diego Suarez, William Wright, Lukas Finster and Rufus Harrison
Girls Sport.. U9A v Culford U12A v Felsted School Eight U12 girls travelled to Felsted for a hard ball pairs cricket match. It was a lovely setting and the girls opted to field first. Things looked promising with a quick wicket from Fenella Jewers, who bowled beautifully as did Scarlett Simmonds and Arabella Richardson, however it was not to be as Felsted were as proficient with their batting as they were with their bowling. Well done, girls a valiant effort! U11A v Felsted This was a good game with improved skill on show from both sides. OBH bowled first and were more accurate on the whole. Plenty of good fielding and improved backing up and throwing especially at the start of the match enabled the girls to limit some of their run scoring. With some powerful hitters, greater bravery and athleticism was required and on occasions we delivered the right focus and energy to stop some boundaries. When batting it was clear to see that we needed to play straight so that their accurate bowling was blocked with quick singles being required. Although the game was lost it was important for the girls to see the next level that they need to reach and the desire necessary to reach those standards in subsequent seasons. U11 B v Felsted On Wednesday we travelled away to Felsted for our penultimate match of the season. The weather was sunny but the conditions a little tricky, with gusty wind and a soft ball, alongside a matted wicket. This made bowling tricky for both teams and therefore limited the shots the batters were able to play. We were first into bat and with very few good balls the going was tough. However, a few singles were played and one cracking 4; we ended our innings on 169 runs. Then we went into field and, like Felsted, struggled with the bowling. They had a short spell with some successful batting in the 5th and 6th overs. This, accompanied by the fact that we were only able to take one wicket made the difference and we lost a close match by 13 runs to their 182. We are looking forward to some more accurately bowling for our last game of the season on Wednesday. OBH welcomed Culford last Friday for yet another fun filled afternoon of cricket. As always, the girls were excited and took themselves off to the pitch and started warming themselves up. Not only have the girls cricket skills improved, but their confidence and leadership is coming through which are both as important when progressing on the sports field. OBH took the win convincingly, crucially only losing 1 wicket in their innings. Well done, girls another great win! U9B v Culford It was my absolute pleasure to watch these girls play as a team. Every girl played their part and it was a happy and enjoyable afternoon. OBH chose to bat first and with some very solid performances we ended our innings at 244 for 3. A particular well done to Ruby Cornish for a final strong batting flourish. It was then our turn to bowl. Again, all the girls played their hearts out and kept Culford's run total as low as possible. Unfortunately it was not our day and Culford sneaked ahead by two runs. A very close match played in wonderful spirit. I was very proud of all our girls
Girls & Boys 8-a-side Cricket Tournament Framlingham School Year 8 West Country Cricket Tour U11 The girls bowled with purpose and in the semi-final against Framlingham they showed more energy at times in the field. The girls have improved their ability to read different situations in the game and piecing more of these parts together will enable them to improve the quality of their overall performance in future matches. Understanding of how to bat was important and certainly skills have grown throughout the season with consideration of when to run and when to hit the ball hard towards the boundary. Efforts were made by most to make contact with the ball more regularly, trying to score singles off good deliveries and smashing the bad ball for four. Well done to all the girls on the progress they have made and please continue to develop your skills and understanding of the game. Colts A Plate Trophy OBH once again proved themselves a competent side, who can bowl accurately, field effectively and score runs efficiently with the bat. They played some exciting matches and won their first three encounters. A win against Town Close would have put them in the final but this opposition proved too strong on the day - and did in fact go on to win the tournament. OBH met Holmwood House for a play-off for third place. What a nail-biting contest, which went down to the last ball of the day. A dot ball was required and that is what OBH bowled. They thoroughly deserved their 3 rd place result and deserve huge credit for their positivity towards each other and their desire to fight for success. Again, many thanks to the travelling supporters for their encouragement on this competitive and enjoyable day of cricket. The Year 8s enjoyed a wonderful three-day tour to Gloucestershire. We set off on Monday morning and arrived at Wycliffe School for lunch and then were straight in to our matches. The Boys 1st team won a close game by six runs. Oliver Stanton (41) and Sam Harrison (31) drove us into a strong score of 137 from 15 overs and despite some wonky bowling, we narrowly defended our score. The 2 nd team also won by a convincing margin of 21 runs while the girls lost by 25 runs. That evening the children mixed crazy golf with burgers and chips at Mr Mulligan s Lost World of Golf in Cheltenham and after a morning playing in one of the town s beautiful parks, we were off to Beaudesert Park School for our second fixture. The 1 st team racked up 156 for 4 from 20 overs, with Caspar Hall (35) and Ben Perry (40) batting starring. Charlie Bidwell then took three wickets as we bowled them out for 69. The 2 nd team made it two out of two as they rattled up a hugely impressive total of 153 runs whilst finishing off their game opponents for less than 50 runs. The girls earned a hard-fought tie scoring 68 runs each. They then went on to enjoy a fun mixed match where they got to know each other and form friendships. After the matches, we were royally entertained by the staff at Beaudesert who put on a swim and a barbeque for the children. A cracking few days!
Boys Sport. Cricket v Culford U12 Bunbury Cup Finals day The U12 boys played RHS in the first semi final of the Bunbury cup. OBh batted first and managed a very respectable 123 from their 20 overs, with Orlando Erith scoring an impressive 50 on what was a difficult pitch to bat on. RHS batted well and it was clear that they were going to reach the target with overs to spare, having said that our boys bowled well, but it didn t stop RHS winning the game with four overs to spare. We played Framlingham College in the 3 rd and 4 th place play off. We batted first and Orlando and Freddie de la Rue got us off to a good start, both scoring 50 s, with Freddie Bidwell chipping in with some big hitting, scoring 26. We set them a total of 157, which we were confident we could defend. The boys bowled well again and Framlingham were in trouble, 7 down after 15 overs, an struggling to keep up with the run rate. After 20 overs Framlingham managed 128, which meant we placed 3 rd in Suffolk. A great effort from the boys, and a well deserved win. Colts B v Felsted Prep Having won the toss Edward Raymond chose to bat, an understandable decision considering our form in this area of the game over the last couple of fixtures. It has to be said though that we struggled to post the sort of score that would seriously challenge our opponents. And so it proved; despite some excellent bowling from all concerned Felsted finished the game at something of a canter, hitting the winning runs early into the 14th over. Luckily we do have one final fixture, a home match against Finborough when the boys can prove they are as capable with the bat as they are when it comes to bowling. Colts C v Felsted This was the closest game of cricket we have had so far this season. We lost too many wickets in the early stages of the game which put us on the back foot, but some excellent running between the wickets gave us an excellent score to defend. Our boys bowled really well, the best this season, and the game went right up to the last few overs. Felsted had the fire power on us, and some fierce hitting in the last over gave them a win by only nine runs. Colts C v Culford ( ) On Wednesday 13th June, we entertained Culford. Our visitors had never played with a hard ball and only arrived with eight players so we made some last minute changes to the rules - including using a soft ball - and they borrowed a couple of fielders from us. We batted first and after a 'steady' start to the innings from Alexander Pascalides and Alistair Ball, Ben Stokes and Alfie Robson put on sixty runs in double quick time. We eventually reached 118 for 4 off our 16 overs and Culford reached 79 for 8 off their allotted balls. It was a comfortable win in pleasant sunshine. U9A It was pleasing to see the boys be much more confident with their batting against Culford. We did hit the ball in the air too much, which cost us wickets, but some quick running between the wickets set Culford a defendable target. The boys bowled well, with far fewer wides and no balls, but some lusty blows at the tail end of Culfords innings secured the win. U9B On Friday OBH played in a wellcontested game against Culford. The opposition batted first and hit the ball with strength and accuracy. Culford were out for 300 which meant that the team had a lot to do to reach their total. OBH batted well however, it was not enough to win and Culford won the game by 50 runs.
And finally After so many close shaves and runners-up spots, we are all thrilled that one of our tennis teams has been crowned county champions. Well done, to the U10 boys who deservedly won through a tough finals day. Josh Bolt and his team of Matt and Sam must be congratulated. They have made so much progress with the OBH tennis over the last couple of years. The children not only perform to a really high standard, they all, very obviously, love it. The calm, fun and supportive approach that Josh, Matt and Sam all have means that the children really are growing to love a game they can play for the rest of their lives, so a massive thank you from all of us to Josh and his team. Tomorrow is perhaps the busiest day of the school year with Sports Day, picnic lunches, Parents v Pupils cricket matches all rounded off by the greatest musical festival in the World OBH Fest III. With the weather set fair, it promises to be an awesome day but please remember your hats, sun cream and water bottles whatever your age. David Griffiths will be with us throughout most of tomorrow so if you have not had a chance to introduce yourselves to him yet, please do say hello as he wanders around tomorrow. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Best wishes Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
