Friday 18th October 2013: Issue No. 102 OBH Choral Society & School Choir at Long Melford Notes from the Head s study.. It s hard to believe that we are already at the halfway point of term; the last seven weeks have flown by in a whirl of busy activity at school. The warmth of early September has given way to a colder autumnal feel and Brettenham Park is changing colour from a vibrant green to warming shades of gold and bronze. As the seasons change, so does life at school: the second half of the Michaelmas term brings with it shorter days and colder temperatures, challenging us to make the best possible use of daylight hours that we can. Children are particularly sensitive to the change in seasons, especially so as winter draws in. Our busy programme for the second half of term, concluding with our Advent Carol Service to be held in St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, will I hope inspire our pupils to bring the best out in themselves, as they have so clearly and admirably done thus far. Well done to all our OBH pupils on a highly successful and productive half of term; thank you to all our teaching and support staff for enabling this to happen. Our thoughts are with our head boy, Harry Pertwee, who fractured his jaw during the tense 1 st XV rugby match v Orwell Park on Wednesday (which OBH won 17-7) Get Well Soon, Harry! Enjoy the half-term break: I have challenged all our pupils to read something, discover something, make a new friend and do something special for someone and keep their bedrooms tidy! (I look forward to hearing how you got on!) Quote of the week Don t say you don t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Mozart, Shakespeare, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein. Anon. Yours aye, John Brett headmaster@obh.co.uk

News from the Music Department Last Saturday, the OBH Choral Society and School Choir joined together to give an evening recital at Long Melford Church. The OBH Choral Society was only formed three weeks ago and the children have likewise only had a short space of time to rehearse so it made the occasion even more impressive. All audio clips of this concert are available from: soundcloud.com/obh-music or by following the link from the music page of the school website. The concert started with 2 short pieces from the OBH Choral Society. The opener was the Shoshone Love Song, a delicate, beautiful piece of music by Roger Emerson. It was a gorgeous opening to the concert with fantastic harmonies from our altos and tenor/basses. What was particularly impressive was the fact that the choir sang as one voice which is something it normally takes a choir years to achieve. Following this piece was an arrangement of The Water Is Wide in unison, which is tricky to do. Each member of the choir listened closely to those around them to ensure the voices were blending together. It was a simple, emotional performance from the Choral Society. Next, up stepped the School Choir to perform two pieces by Benjamin Britten in this the centenary year of his birth. The choir sang A New Year s Carol (which will next be heard at the Carol Service at the end of term) and Old Abram Brown, a clever little piece that splits into four parts. Both pieces are from his series of pieces called Friday Afternoon s. The concert concluded with the sublime Requiem by Gabriel Fauré where both choirs joined forces. It was a truly memorable performance that all performers, children and adults alike, should be incredibly proud of. The music evolves as the piece goes on from a quiet, contemplative opening to a heart-warming yet explosive middle to a quiet ending. There were fantastic solos from guest Baritone David Hart and OBH s own Oliver Raymond and the piece was expertly accompanied on the impressive organ by Christopher Moore. Wow is the only word that springs to mind to describe this performance! This was a wonderful evening of music and my sincere thanks go to all of the adults in the Choral Society for giving up their time so willingly to prepare for this concert. Well done to the children as well who will, I m sure, have enjoyed the experience of performing as part of a full choir. It is equally pleasing to note that we raised for EACH (East Anglian Children s Hospice). Toby Dunham (Director of Music)

The Great War An Commemorative Tour Dear Parents, As you will all know, 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and, as such, I am arranging a special tour of the battlefields to commemorate this event. However, this will be no ordinary battlefield tour. Samuel Hill, an OBH leaver in 2013, uncovered the names of some boys who attended South Lodge and then went on to fight in this war. Further research into one name in particular, Maurice Fitzmaurice, revealed that he was an Engineering Officer in the Lahore Brigade. He was wounded at Neuve Chappelle, returned home to King s College Hospital before returning to France. He was eventually killed at Ypres in This invaluable information has enabled us to create a unique tour: a commemorative Old Buckenham Hall Tour. We will literally walk in the footsteps of Maurice Fitzmaurice, and possibly other OBH pupils, in the battlefields of the Great War. The tour has been created and organised by Anglia Tours an Essex company who specialize in battlefield tours. We have created a bespoke three day tour uniquely based on this OBH pupil s involvement in the war. This tour will be utterly unique to OBH and will tell the story of the war through the eyes of the men who fought there and will include visits to German trenches, Hill 60, military cemeteries, Passchendaele, museums, Last Post at the Menin Gate Memorial and a visit to Neuve Chappelle and Maurice Fitzmaurice s grave at the Indian Memorial. As you can see, this will be a fascinating, informative, meaningful and highly personal visit; one that promises to be deeply moving. The suggested dates would see a departure on Friday 28 th March 2014 and a return on Sunday 30 th March. The guide price at this juncture is approximately 275 per person which includes all travel, food, hotels, visits and insurance. I am sure that you will agree that this is very reasonable price for such a unique tour. Staff will accompany the children and we will also have the service of two expert guides for the entire duration of the trip. We would like to offer this trip up to children in Years 6, 7 and 8. If you would like your child/ children to join us please contact me at steven.hayes@obh.co.uk by Monday 4 th November. Places are limited so will be confirmed on a strictly first come first served basis. This promises to be a wonderful trip. I shall look forward to hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Steven Hayes Head of History

News from Pre-Prep.. This week, Year 1 and 2 took a trip to Lavenham. The children were excited to be on the minibuses and be going out of school! As part of our topic Families and Neighbours the children were in Lavenham to look at their local community and its amenities. They spotted plenty of bins, benches and bus stops. They also looked out for road signs and shops and had to draw their favourite house using as much detail as possible. Baby & Toddler Group The Baby & Toddler Group will begin on Tuesday 5th November with Julie Steward in the Pre-Prep from am to am. This exciting activity will be held every Tuesday morning term time. The cost will be 3 with refreshments provided. Any parent with a baby and/or toddler who would like to come along would be very welcome and do encourage any friends who might like to come as well. For more information please contact Jo Riddleston (admissions@obh.co.uk) Diary Dates & Notices had written back at school. They are waiting for them to arrive at home for mummies, daddies, brothers and sisters now. The highlight of the trip was finding a post-box in which to put the postcards the children Monday 2 nd December 5.45 pm Lighting of the Christmas tree all more the welcome to attend Friday 6 th December 2.00 pm Nativity Play & Friends Christmas Fayre Monday 9 th December Pantomime trip Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 Notices Please can all children return to school with suitable winter accessories. Year 2 have been getting into the Halloween spirit and have used pumpkins in their maths this week. They have measured height, weight and capacity working in teams. If you have any hats or adult shoes (especially clippity cloppity shoes) needing a new home, Reception and Nursery children would love these in their dressing up boxes.

Reception & Nursery Nursery What an exciting week in Reception as everyone was given their first reading books to take home and we hope you have had fun sharing these with your children. During our numeracy sessions this week we have been busy ordering objects by size. On Wednesday we opened our very own OBH shoe shop where we each took in turns to measure our customer s feet before finding a shoe that would fit perfectly. We also began to introduce the use of money in our role play ensuring that the customer paid the correct amount of money for their lovely pair of shoes. Towards the end of the week we went on an autumn walk searching for the changes in the season. We found prickly conkers in their shells and an array of beautiful coloured leaves. We also used our fantastically large listening ears to listen to the wind blowing and the birds singing. Nursery began the week by going on an autumn walk to collect leaves which we used to create animals, taking inspiration from the book Look What I Did With a Leaf by Morteza.E.Sohi. On Tuesday & Wednesday we had circle time discussing harvest and looked at a selection of autumnal vegetables. We then used those vegetables to create stamps, creating lovely vegetable prints. We finished the week by investigating pumpkins. We used our sense of touch and smell to investigate the inside of the pumpkin, we described it as feeling slimy, wet and soft and the outside we described as being hard and smooth. We then used the seeds from the pumpkin and red lentils to create a seed collage of a pumpkin,. As we created our collages we described the shape of the different seeds and their colours.

Half Term Sport Reports: Boys 1st XV The 1 st XV rugby team have had an unbeaten season, so far! There have been some tricky, physical games where we have had to graft, as Mr Drake would say. Everyone has played extremely well, but to make a special mention for all the forwards for giving a strong base for the squad but also for Freddie s outstanding tries and try saving tackles. We have worked really well as a team and have great team spirit, we know that whatever happens we will stand shoulder to shoulder with each other and support our friends! We can t wait for the next half of term, where we are sure more challenges are awaiting us. From the 1st Team Coach: Nick Drake The boys have put in so much hard work this half of term which has reflected in their unbeaten record. If we put the rugby to the side for a moment, a very large part of their success has been their ability to cooperate and gel as a team. There are no individuals in this side, they want to play for each other, through thick and thin. As a coach I couldn t ask for more. 2nd XV (Capt: Tom Marriage) The second XIII/XII have started well this season comfortably winning 3 of our last 6 games with a narrow loss at Holmwood (22-27). Our try scoring ability has proved good scoring 199 points against our combined opposition, with a point s difference of 82, our hard running wingers: Robin Mathewson and Max Casas have scored 8 tries between them making a brilliant contribution. Our forwards have proved solid in contact winning back our ball in the rucks. All this resulted in some good wins at The Leys (55-10) and Brandeston (47-17) and ending our first half season with a tragically close defeat against Orwell (14-15). Altogether a good start to the season. Half Term Sport Reports From the 2nd Team Coach: Alan Turner This year s second team is predominantly made up of U12 players which will form next year s 1st XV, and so it is pleasing to report that over the last 6 weeks the team has followed a steep learning curve, with some playing rugby for the very first time. A mixed bag of results does not show just how well the team is playing with a notable win against Brandeston and the narrow loss to Orwell Park The team has also notched up no less than 35 tries in 6 games. Some of the handling and tackling has been outstanding and they are well worth a watch next half term. Colts A team (Capt: Nicholas Gambier) We have played many exciting games this half of term. We have had an unbeaten season so far from the help of,mr Barrett and Mr Burrows has also helped improve some of our skills too. On Sunday 13 th October four of the team went to the Barbarian trials in Bedford. We are hoping to play even better next half of term. From the Coach: Russell Barrett A great start for the Colts A team as Nicholas has said. They have had some really thrilling games and deserve credit for their efforts in securing four hard fought draws as well as a couple of pleasing victories along the way. The boys have shown huge commitment when forced to defend their line - highlighted by one stunning, match saving cover tackle in the Orwell encounter! After a steady start, the team are now demonstrating a real desire to take on opponents with some direct and aggressive running. Keeping the ball alive with more passes and attacking space out wide (as they did in their last encounter) should be the focus on our return from the half-term break. Colts B Team: Daniel Soborg Our season has been very positive so far. We are getting better at moving the ball wide and using our wingers. We are also good at ripping the ball off the opposition.

Half Term Sport Reports: From the Colts B Coach: Steven Hayes The team has had a very positive first half of term. After losing their first match to King s College School, we have produced some good performances to beat some strong teams. There have been some close matches, winning by just 2 point against Finborough and by one try against Holmwood House, as well as a good win against South Lee. The first half of term ended with our best performance so far against a strong Orwell Park team in an exciting game of rugby. There are still aspects of our game that are developing but we are looking forward to the rest of this term s challenges. U13A Hockey (Capt: Mia Derrick) So far this term the girls 1 st team have had a great start. Currently we are unbeaten and if we carry on the way we are at the moment, I think we could make this an unbeaten season. We managed to beat the only team that beat us last year; Holmwood House, and we came out with a 6-0 win! We had a close match with Brandeston Hall but we still didn t lose! We have been working together as a team really well and following Mrs Celerier s instructions: as Freya did very well against South Lee. Mrs C told her to aim for the post and she did just that. It bounced off the post! Everyone in the team has worked really well and not one of us has had a bad game. At the moment, we are on track for a very successful season! From the U13A Coach: Mrs. C The U13A team has gone from strength to strength. Our numbers may be small but our spirit is vast. Determination and fighting for the team, characterises these girls. Their performance against Brandeston was the highlight of the season thus far. They have been a real pleasure to coach. Half Term Sport Reports U13 B Hockey (Capt: Milly Pryke) We have had an amazing first half of the season so far. This is because of our great play and our team work. Daisy has been very good at standing on the post ready to tap the ball in and Poppy is excellent at moving the ball up the wing with her extremely big hits! Our best match so far has definitely been Brandeston where even though we lost we just kept pushing. Maddy and Alex were very strong at defending and of course we couldn t forget Charlotte s amazing tackles! I m sure that the rest of the team would all agree with me in say that we re all proud of our effort. U11A Hockey (Capt: Cosima Dixon-Smith) There have been both highs and lows this term, but we have definitely improved as the weeks have gone by and got more used to the size and speed of astro pitches as all our matches have been away. Going to Ipswich High School was a great success as we played them and Holmwood House and held both teams to a draw. The following week was the Brandeston Tournament and we came 2nd in our pool which was great, only missing out on a higher position by goal difference. Having extra skills coaching from Mr Bedwell has helped us a lot and hopefully we will have even better results after half-term. U11 B Hockey (Capt: Emma Buckle) We have all enjoyed playing together this term. We started the season well with 2 very close matches, both resulting in 0-0 draws. Our highlight of this term so far was our match against Ipswich Prep which we won 2-1. We all played extremely well and it was great to score 2 goals. We have all learnt a lot already and are looking forward to playing more matches next term.

Astro Update Tarmac completion and fencing This week the crew have finished the tarmac and started with the fencing. The surface is now awaiting the shock pad which will only arrive once the fencing has been completed, in order that the surface is kept clean and free of any wildlife! For the shock pad to be laid we must have dry weather for the glue to set, so fingers crossed there! They estimate that the shock pad should be laid by the end of half term, ready for the arrival of the carpet the following week. They have also been working on the spectators area which runs 80m alongside the pitch. We will in due course lay the engraved paving slabs there but not until later next term. Great progress again and now it is a race against the incoming snow! U13 & U11 Netball Training Camp Friday 3rd January all day At OBH or RHS (if weather inclement) with two national league netball players. Please let Mrs. C. know as soon as you can if you are interested. There will be a cost to be advised. Suffolk Cross-Country at RHS 24 pupils represented the school in a very well attended morning of races. All the pupils gave their best with three exceptional individual performances in a high calibre event. In the minor Girls Cosi Dixon-Smith and India de Labilliere came 44th and 50th respectively to qualify for the next round in December. Grace Gregory achieved an incredible 24th place racing against girls in Year 8 and Year 9. She too has got through to Round 2. Watch this space! Tennis Tennis camps will be run over the October Half term holiday from the 22nd -23rd- 24th and 29th -30th- 31st.These camps are for the 8-13yrs and cost 25 per day starting at 9am until 3pm.
