3 General Infrmatin 1 Cincidental with its birth, the Czechslvak Republic issued its first stamp series called the Hrad any, t which the first design 30 Heller bistre belngs. Printing began n January 15, 1919 and the stamp was put int pstal use n January 17, Because it is a cmmn value and was printed far t many times, it has many defects, and because its clr prduced few crisp images, determining a stamp s psitin n the plate can be quite time cnsuming. Printing was dne with tw zinc plates. While the cntrl numbers n sheets printed frm plate I are quite nrmal, thse frm plate II have a beveled base n the numeral 6. under the secnd clumn f stamps, as well as a beveled base n the 8 in the cntrl number 18. under the sixth clumn f stamps. Released: Fr this denminatin, abut 20,650,000 imperfrate stamps were prduced; f thse, an estimated 20,000,000 pieces were actually issued. Sme f the issue was verprinted fr SO 1920 and sme was used fr Ministry perfratins (line perfrated in 11½ x 13¾, cmb perfratins in 11¾ and 13¾ x 13½). 2 Afterwards, a smaller part f the issue was privately perfrated. The difficulty f the study increased because the stamp s clr lacks cntrast; mst f the printed stamps were in a yellw r yellwish shade, and nly a small number were in a brwn live shade. The study is a result f examining and prcessing mre than seven thusand examples f this Hrad any value. 3 It may be that fr ther Hrad any values the main ray is the greatest help thrugh its defrmatins, dublings, being denser r fainter, and ther defects in determining the stamp s psitin, but in this value the abslute majrity lack main rays. The fact f the matter is that bth plates were re-etchings dne during the final perid that the first design was in use; as printing prgressed, thse facts were mre and mre in evidence. Main Ray: 4 Main rays are fund n stamps 9, 17 and 37 (28 has a shrt main ray) frm plate I; and n stamps 9 and 17 frm plate II. There is a dt in place f the main ray n stamps 20, 24, 75, 91 frm plate I and stamp 34 frm plate II. This Study: While cnducting the study, I benefited mst f all frm the writings f Dr. Františk Kubát s Hrad any published in the first vlume f the Mngrafie z. Známek; frm infrmatin in the handbk and catalg f Mr. Bhdan Krampl; frm 1 Tr. The riginal Czech text, a distressed and almst illegible phtcpy, presented significant translatin challenges and puzzles. Thus, in additin t the amateur status f this translatr, yu must factr in a very difficult-t-read text. 2 Ministerial Perfratins: stamps that were made fr the archives f the Pstal Museum. Mst carry the verprint VZOREC r SO See Mngrafie, Dil I, pages Tr. 3 Tr. The text says, 7mi tisíc, and tisíc is thusand ; n meaning was fund fr mi. Hwever, it is safe t assume that the authr lked at a great many stamps. 4 Tr. The secnd (and typically perative) wrd in every line in the riginal is smeared beynd recgnitin; the translatin here is a best guess made by lking at the stamp psitins listed. iii

By September 1990, as an intrductin t the study f the sheets frm plates I and II f the first design 30h, I had already reviewed material frm the Pstal Museum in Prague, and gradually refined my infrmatin by referencing cllectrs full sheets and sheets recnstructed frm vertical and hrizntal strips f stamps. Printing: The first design 30h was placed in a printing frm with the first design 10h: 5 Perfratin Guides: Plate I Plate II 4 mm 41/51 8mm 50/60 Nail Hles: Plate II: 7 (abve and t the right) 61 (abve and t the left). Service Prints: In preparatry assembly, auxiliary prints twice the size f the stamp s picture were dne n chalky paper fr the 30h stamp. Black Prints (with machined spaces between the stamps): White chalk paper. White chalky cardstck. Yellwish chalk paper. Yellwish chalk cardstck. Brwnish rdinary paper. Trial prints: Frm the printing press (live, withut gum). Brwnish paper. Brwn paper. Shades riginating frm dark yellw dye (n number): 5 Tr. Since tête-bêche gutters were prduced, shuld anther frm (Mngrafie, Dil. 1, p.137) cupling inverted 30h plates with inverted 20h plates als be shwn? iv

5 Yellw live. Dark yellw live. Brwn live. N special shades are fund. The nly divergent shades result frm chemical r sun influenced changes. Paper Quality: There were great differences in the 30h papers. The paper suffered the same flaws as did the first design 5h. As it was unrlled, these flaws were factrs in the paper s crumpling. Specimens: Overprints f VZOREC exist n brwnish r brwn paper withut gum. Gutters: Only a few 30h gutters, resulting frm a supervisry versight, exist. That is why it is a great rarity and the mst expensive Hrad any gutter. Frgeries: There are as well frgeries f the gutter, n grayish paper with gum; als, the VZOREC verprint has been frged. Prductin Defects: Amng the majr prductin defects fund is the veil/fg t the right f the bush n stamp 71 frm plate II, between the shrub and the left branch n stamp 86 als frm plate II, and a clred spltch (smudged printing) at the bttm f stamps 91 t 100 frm plate II, and, particularity after stamp 91, in the lwer part f the value tablet. Often seen are badly embssed prints, due t the applicatin f the pressure cylinders, and mre ften, smudged prints because f an excessive accretin f clr. Often the smudged sheets f the first issue f the basic values in the Hrad any series were nt persistently clear enugh fr the needs f the pstal service. That is why, when the signs fr the identificatin f a stamp s psitin are dubtful, its descriptin has been augmented in terms f defrmatins and smudges, shrtened twers (especially the first and secnd twers), pen r chipped frames (especially fr the first upper rw and the last lwer rw f stamps), and jins between the seventh and eighth leaves. Fr example, mst cpies f stamps at psitin 91 frm plate II have the first heart and the lwer third t lwer quarter f the value tablet bscured by the clr. Hwever, a small number f the stamps frm this psitin cme frm the first printing run and are entirely withut this blemish. Characteristic f sheets and recnstructins f the first design 30h Hrad any stamp is that the Mngrafie s defects fr plates I and II are nt always present; fr instance, instead f a ntch r buckle in the rf within the sun described fr psitin 5 frm plate I, the entire rf may be fund intact. Such a sheet is held by the Prague Pstal Museum. v

6 In Vlume 1 f the Mngrafie, n page 216, in the descriptins f plate defects fr plate I listed under the illustratins, the ne fr psitin 58, large dt in the secnd heart f stamp, is missing. Hwever, in the apprpriate place in the list is stamp number 54; that is, the illustratin shuld be labeled number 54, nt number 58. Veil/Fg t the right f the bush mentined fr the 30h n page 177 f the Mngrafie fr psitin 17 n plate II prperly belngs t psitin 71 n plate II. Evidently, this is the result f a typesetting errr. Additinal veils r fgs appear in psitins 31 and 86 f plate II. Defects Nt Mentined in The Mngrafie: Sme ther significant defects, which are typical yet nt mentined by the Mngrafie, are utlined here fr Hrad any specialists, i.e. thse defects that are relevant fr determining a stamp s psitin: Plate I Defects 7 Secnd sun under the TA in POŠTA. 13 Break in the lwer right part f the third heart extending int the decratin under it. 40 Six gaps in the tp f the val. 43 Sharply defined white spt near the left branch (abve the shrub s secnd branch). 57 Tw dts in the sun abve the brken rf Cnspicuus clred dt n lip f the first leaf. 75 Three t five breaks in the upper frame abve POŠTA. 80 Clred dt in the upper part f the L in SLOV. 86 Large dt in the upper prtin f the right dve s tail. Plate II Defects 1 Enlarged (defrmed) first leaf. 13 Prjectin frm the upper part f the letter O in ESKO. 22 White spt cming ut f the left-center f the first spiral. 29 Lwer part f letter in ESKO enlarged. 45 The secnd leaf extended t the lwer left. 55 White dt between the first wave and the bush s first branch. 56 A white dash n the first wave pinted tward the bush. 59 Three dts near the tp f the secnd twer. 64 Cnspicuus clred dt n the lip f the first leaf. 66 White dt near the furth spiral. 74 Grup f spltches t the upper left f the first branch. 82 Tw windws n the rf under the furth twer. 85 Next t the white dt in the right branch is as well a smaller dark secnd sun under the TA in POŠTA (Nt t be cnfused with the ne in stamp 7/I!). 100 Dark verticle lines in the right dve s small fan (like feathers). 6 Tr. 7 Defects That Change During the PrintingPrcess: Additinal defects may be fund as a result f changes ccurring during the printing prcess: Plate I: 16 Dt n the left dve s abdmen gradually enlarges. 35 With r withut a veil/fg cncealing the right frked line. 39 With r withut a white dt abve the fifth wave. 76 A nrmal furth leaf r it extends t the lwer right. 89 With r withut a prjectin n the lwer left crner. Plate II 7 Abve the seventh wave a spt increases in size. 15 With r withut a white spt t the left f the bush s first branch. 18 There are three variatins: On the bush s last branch is an undisturbed area, Or a white ring, Or a rund white spltch. 31 With r withut a veil/fg acrss the entire bush. 36 There are fur variatins (in cmbinatin): With r withut a veil/fg acrss the ŠT in POŠTA. Dts Missing frm The Sun: A thrugh descriptin fr each stamp s psitin may be s supplemented by mre infrmatin abut the dts missing frm the sun s rim (althugh they are mentined in the individual descriptins, the infrmatin there des nt cmplete the picture fr the first design 30h plates I and II. Cnnectins between the zer and the edge f the val are nt valid indicatins, hwever, especially in smudged prints. One has the same prblem with the dubled ray fllwing the right branch. Just as fr the study fr the first design Hrad any 5h, this 30h study cntains descriptins f the basic deviatins and defects fr all psitins frm plates I and II. Thse incidental defects incurred during prductin r the temprary nes incurred tward the end f the printing, hwever, are mentined in frward slashes ( / ). 9 7 Tr. Very blurred text, it appears t be 57 under the jeweler s lupe, but ne cannt be sure. 8 Tr. Again very blurred in the riginal text. 9 Tr. The frward slashes have been replaced with parentheses. Further ftntes mark when ne f the frward slashes was missing frm a descriptin, thus making it impssible t knw what text was actually t be enclsed. viii

9 This cncludes the rund f prcessing and publicatin f the basic study f the 26 stamps in the Hrad any theme frm the first Czechslvak series. This final study was cmpleted and published in the 1993, the year f the 75 th anniversary f Czechslvakia and its first stamps. It is als, I am afraid, the year in which n January 1 st, the Czechslvakian experimented ended with the re-partitining f Mnichv, Jalta, and Bratislava.
